amazing job. the P6P is amazing. My sister have the pixel 2, my wife pixel 3XL, my brother pixel 4XL and I have Pixel 6 Pro and a pixel 3. I noticed that the older phones are amazing too. My preferred lens on p6p is the telephoto. It's amazing 😍

Nice! I am stuck with people in my family that still insist on having an iPhone 🙄 I totally agree, the telephoto is my favorite too.

you should compare the astrophotography mode on the Pixel 6 pro to the sony, 4 minutes from the pixel 6 can produce mind blowing images
@loicba
@loicba Год назад
I have actually taken multiple astrophotography mode photos and Sony shots at the same time and haven't made a video because the Sony is just better in every way... Don't get me wrong, the Pixel is insane for a one button click solution but it can't compete with a low light beast like the Sony cameras. I hope Google will update the astrophotography mode on the Pixel 8 which would give me an excuse to make another comparison video 😉

Wow!! That was very detailed video on how come smartphones have come so far. Most amazingly It's unbiased. It's incredible what this tiny little sensors with AI capabilities can do right? At the end of the day,professional cameras are what they meant to be.

excellente vidéo comme tjs! de mon côté my pixel 4 consistently produces warmer photos with hit or miss edge detection, updates dont seem to help much still very impressed with mobile photography, even more after ur in depth comparison ik its all still an unofficial rumor but do u plan on buying a pixel fold and pixel watch (or wtv their real names will be)?
@loicba
@loicba 2 года назад
Yes, I actually preferred the warm images from the Pixel 4a. The edge detection is a hard problem to solve. Even Photoshop has a hard time with people and hair (tho it's much better than the Pixel). No, neither of them.

You can manually add blur in Google Photos to the telephoto pictures. They look extremely good, the separation is very good because it already has a bit of natural blur.
@loicba
@loicba 2 года назад
Yep I know but it wasn't the point of this video! There's a lot of things you can do in post-processing and if I started doing that, the mirrorless (which has a lot more information to work with) would have had an unfair advantage...
@toddysurcharge771

Phone blur will never equal a real camera because it's computational and not physics driven so it always messes something up when you look close enough

Sorry for the late response, I would probably wait for the Pixel 7 Pro, it's never worth buying a new phone just a few months before they will announce the new one.
@dfrancis0
@dfrancis0 2 года назад
The Pixel 6 Pro does not activate the telephoto lens unless a minimum exposure value threshold is reached. The minimum is lower for Night Mode than regular shots. The reason your telephoto shots look horrible at night is because you weren't using the telephoto lens at all. You were using a 1/16 crop of the sensor of the main lens. I adore my 6 Pro, but the inability for me to definitively select the telephoto lens is one of my biggest gripes with this system. Even if they don't want to do it in their camera app, expose the functionality in the API so other apps can use it.
@loicba
@loicba 2 года назад
I agree with you and I am aware of this. For the comparison, I filtered the shots by focal length so the shot I identified as the telephoto, should be from the telephoto lens unless Google doesn't add the correct metadata. If that is the case, that's really bad!
@dfrancis0
@dfrancis0 2 года назад
@@loicba In my experience, the lens aperture and focal length have been tagged correctly in the metadata I view on Google Photos, even when the camera 'overrides' and stays on the standard lens. YMMV, of course. BTW, the camera also tends to stick to the standard lens at 4x if you're focusing closely. My rough estimate is that the minimum focusing distance is about 70cm-75cm for the telephoto. Keep this in mind if you haven't discovered it already.

Something that you may have already picked up on, but hitting the 4x button in the pixel 6 pro doesn't always result in the photo being taken with the 4x telephoto lens. I think that this happened on some of the shots in this video. This is usually the case in low light settings like outdoors at night. The phone will decide if it can get a better image from the main lens vs the 4x and will use the one that it thinks will perform the best. Since the main lens is faster and has a larger sensor, it usually picks that at night. This is fine, imo, for every situation OTHER than when you are trying to use night sight. Because the lower resolution from the digital crop on the main sensor will give you low detail. Meanwhile, with the slower 4x, the longer exposure in night sight would make up for lower light gathering. My experience is that it usually switches to the 4x at night when you zoom past about 6x, no matter how dark it is. But any low light 4x shots, double check which lens it's actually using. The details section of the photos app will tell you the f-stop of the image. The main sensor is 1.9 and the 4x is 3.5. You can use that to double check that the 4x was actually being used.
@loicba
@loicba 2 года назад
I actually split the images using the focal length of the photos so I would be surprised they weren't taken with the 4x zoom lens. But I am human, I could have made an error!

Why would you use a $4500 camera on auto?
@loicba
@loicba 2 года назад
Most photographers use "pro" cameras on semi-automatic settings. When you do events, landscapes, or other type of events where the conditions are continuously changing, using a semi-automatic mode allows you to concentrate on the shot, not playing with your settings all the time. Also, the point of using auto in this video was because I compare it with a fully-automatic smartphone camera.
@toddysurcharge771
@toddysurcharge771 2 года назад
Yeah I know it. Should have at least used aperture priority or something like that. Also unless he used a prime lens than this is bullocks because cell phones don't have zoom lenses they have separate lenses for ultra wide, normal and telephoto shots.

Don't get me wrong, I have the Pixel 6 pro and it takes excellent pictures....for a phone camera ..........It constantly amazes me with the photo processing technology - most of which has been explained in this video That said it will not replace my dedicated camera any time soon for the following reasons: 1. In very busy photos (fine foliage etc) the picture processing of the P6P will tend to overhsarpen and produce "nervous" images - I haven't found a way to avoid this feature and it's unrecoverable in post process 2. The "sky AI" kicks into every photo automatically with a moderate amount of sky present and massively oversaturates blues - this needs to be dialled down manually (with the slider) when taking the shot but this also tends to undersaturate the non blues when turned down - not a deal breaker just a little inconvenience 3. The background bokeh in portrait mode is artificial - it's the best I have seen out of any phone but not 100% perfect - occasionally it will produce a visible odd transition from fine detail in focus to the background (e.g hair lines etc) - I suspect if you looked a little closer at the samples in the video you might have noticed this as well. 4. The "high dynamic range" again is done by the imaging software automatically applying boost to the shaded areas. This can produce a "flat" looking image - I think on balance I prefer to actually have a strong deliniation between shadow and well lit areas and tweak the shadow & highllights as required in post process. I guess it depends a great deal on the lenses used on the dedicated camera - I shoot with fast primes almost exlcusively. There is something in the photos that are taken with the dedicated camera that makes them just more pleasing to look at in most cases, ocassionally though I will get a shot from the P6P and admit that It is probably as good as anything that could have been taken on more dedicated equipment (well that I could have taken anyway).

If you watch both parts of my comparison between my Sony A7 IV and my Google Pixel 6 Pro, I think you would realize that we actually agree on a lot... I am not trying to say that a phone camera is in any way better than a DSLR/mirrorless but only to show much phone cameras have improved over the years. A mirrorless that can capture more information will always allow to create better images in the end.
@toddysurcharge771
@toddysurcharge771 2 года назад
Not only that but a camera can just do exposure bracketing and then you can make an HDR shot in processing that would kill any cell phone's dynamic range.
