We lost one of the greatest voices of the 80s and beyond and when Tony Lewis the esteemed voice and bassist of the multi-platinum power pop band the Outfield passed way at just 62 years old.
Tony was a lights out vocalist. With that distinct voice that made the Outfield a mainstay of the decade when Your Love went to #6 in 1986
Tony Lewis had a voice that was a spiraling, grand, extravaganza of human emotion. I was honored to interview Tony at length and discuss his life from the first song he heard that inspired him to form a band, his unique partnership with guitarist John Spinks and the stories behind the Outfield’s biggest rock and roll songs along with many other insights.

The Music and Vinyl Community lost one of the greatest voices of the 80s and beyond and when
Tony Lewis the esteemed voice and bassist of the multi-platinum power pop band the Outfield. He was just 62 years old.
Tony was a lights out vocalist. With that distinct voice he made the Outfield a mainstay of the decade when Your Love went to #6 in 1986
He was preceded in death by his blood brother and musical partner guitarist/songwriter John Spinks who passed away from Cancer in 2014. Tony and John had a special chemistry and we all feel it in every song of The Outfield’s that we here.
“From their first single, “Say It Isn’t So”, you just knew that the Outfield were masters of Melodic rock. Rock songs with sure-fire, catchy riffs, drummer Alan Jackman’s driving beat, and out of this world background vocals. Songs you could sing along to and listened to until your cassette tape wore out. For me, it was the high pitched, straight ahead, grab you by the neck lead vocals that pushed the band over the top and well above some of the other power pop bands at the time.
I distinctly remember buying “Play Deep” after I discovered them from the radio. I was more than elated to show my friends, my latest musical discovery, and of course, they followed suit and became massive fans. That’s one of the tricks to this band. The music of the Outfield really reached across the aisle as well as any band of it’s day. What I mean is that the metal heads, the wavers, the preppies, hell even the cowboys, they all loved them some Outfield.
Tony Lewis had a voice that was a spiraling, grand, extravaganza of human emotion. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to sit down with Tony and discuss his life from the first song he heard that inspired him to form a band, his unique partnership with guitarist John Spinks and the stories behind the Outfield’s biggest songs. "Your Love" is just one of those songs that is a timestamp for me, whenever I hear it I can shut my eyes and remember what I was doing and feeling in 1986. This year 2020 started off on Jan 7 with the loss of Neil Peart, continued on with my father in May, Eddie Van Halen not too long ago and now Tony. I come here for a sense of comfort and really am grateful to you Professor for your great interviews and education.

You will be blown away If you watch Tony Lewis (on RU-vid) singing these songs in 2018. He was 60 years old and sounded the same as he did back in the 80's. Another amazing voice silenced.

I was 19 when I heard them in 86 for the first time. From the first notes of Your love I was a fan. And followed them for a couple of years. They were very big for a while. Tony's voice was so great. I'm old now but it was a great time to be alive

I'm endlessly fascinated by song writers who have a hit and think 'we thought it was just another song'. There are so many stories like that. Toto was offered Human Nature by their member Steve Porcaro and said basically "Nah, it's not something we are interested in". So, it goes to Michael Jackson who turns it into a smash hit.

I had the pleasure of meeting Tony, John and Alan at a record signing before a concert in Houston. They were opening for Starship at Southern Star Amphitheater. They played their set in the rain and roared louder than the thunder. They ended their set just as the bottom fell out we all rushed out of the venue. It was a memorable show. Soundtrack to our lives indeed. RIP Tony and John.

Obviously, Tony's voice is the most recognizable aspect that makes the Outfield sound unique... but I also think John's guitar tone was a huge contribution.. clean, slightly chorused and a little crunchy... and very recognisable in its own right.

I agree! There sound was so bright and crisp even down to the snappy snare. Play Deep is one of my go to albums when testing out a new sound system in the car or at home, even to this day. Listening to this on a Klipsch sound system is ideal since Klipsch is know for their tweeter horn sound. It makes for a bright concert sound in your living room.

Adam: What a fantastic interview. Your got me crying, again. So many moments, but the look on Tony’s face as he talked about John, and got chocked up.... wow. People forget these are human beings, and as a kid who has grown up idolizing The Outfield, I am most grateful that I got to know Tony and Carol personally. The music will remain, but my friend is gone, and I grieve with his wife and family. Thank you for capturing the human that Tony Lewis was, for all to see now and in the future. I guess that's what did it for me,too. When I heard the music..in the 80s..there was an immediate authenticity. You knew it was from a real person. A voice you knew. So many drum machines and samplers were going on..but The Outfield came across as genuine, from the heart. And years later,nothing has changed. I want to thank the camera man...you captured so much in this interview. Watch the eyes. I couldn't help but feel the deep loss that Tony felt,when speaking of John Spink's passing. It's a feeling that easily took some years off of Tony, I think. It was sorrowful to watch. But, we have the music. And they gave it their best..and yes, Tony and John..if you can read this: You DID capture the magic!! So many times. I am glad I met you. You outshined soooo many. We were lucky to know you. I hope you catch up with John and have as much joy in the future as you gave Us in your past. Thank you.

I am so sorry for your loss. Have met him, John and Simon actually back around '99...my brother in radio had brought them to Dayton, Ohio for shows. He let me talk with them on the phone during his interview the day of their first show. I asked if Voices of Babylon was on their set list and they said "no". Told them it was my favorite song. They ended up calling me out at the show "Hey where's Jeff's brother Todd?" I jumped up and down screaming and then they said "This is for you Todd!" and proceeded to play it for me. I was so excited and honored. Then after the show got to meet them face to face and they were so fun and hilarious. What a memory....God bless!

Play Deep is such an underrated record by such an underrated band. One of my personal all time favorite records, it's pure pop perfection. Tony's incredible voice is such an understated voice of the 80's, effortlessly punching up to the top of the tenor range. It's like a soaring eagle of emotion, that's the best way I can put it haha This news absolutely blindsided me and devastated me, I adore The Outfield and share Play Deep around w friends. Anyone else now rediscovering their Outfield albums and just loving the shit out of it?!? 80's yet timeless. 'Say It Isn't So' in my ears right now... hmmm... so good. Crisp. Sharp. I know this sound cliché, but the Professor covers the artists whose music was the sound track of my youth. As a teenager in the eighties; cassette music from the Fixx, Duran Duran, the Police, Honeymoon Suite, Glass Tiger, Mr. Mister, and especially the Outfield were in constant rotation in my 83 Escort's stereo. During those long forgotten days I would find myself driving down some back country road, waiting to get out of school and starting my life. During the spring and summer of 89 I played Voices of Babylon till the cassette almost wore out. Not a bad song on that album. At 49 yrs. old right now I would give almost anything to go back and relive those days one more time. God speed, Tony Lewis. Thank you for the memories.

I just turned 50 and its hard to think that in the next 10 years so many of my favorite 80s rock "idols" are gonna be gone.....I landed in this land on Feb. 2016...and when I heard The Outfield"...that song Your Love....I felt connected to the land and everything will be ok. I'm sad for Tony's passing in a way that's different from how I feel about the passing of EVH. I guess because I had just recently watched the interview with Tony and his death seems so unexpected and he seems like such a nice guy. Plus, while I liked The Outfield songs I heard on the radio I never bought the LP's and wish I had--of the British bands, I was more into Swing Out Sister, Breathe, and Johnny Hates Jazz. Anyway, now I have some new music to explore. Rest in peace, Tony.

Swing Out Sister just had a new album a few years back. But you're right: better late than never. I've been binging on pre-1984 Van Halen and The Outfield is next.

What a lovely person, and it's so sad they are both gone. I remember seeing them open for Journey on Raised on Radio tour in Seattle. They were pure magic on stage super talented and having a blast. I remember in the parking lot that I heard more outfield blasting from cars than Journey! Was a big surprise but that album play deep was super hot. Excellent interview

It is so sad to hear Tony describing the sense of safety evoked by Penny Lane after his untimely death. He is right about the way the song evokes ordinary, every day life in Liverpool and any town anywhere really. I have loved The Outfield since 1989 when I got into Voices of Babylon and My Paradise, both great songs from an accomplished album in that hot UK summer. Rockeye followed in 1992 with great songs- he is right that they could not get arrested in the UK- they could not achieve a cross over hit through no fault of their own. Under a Stone is one of my favourites from Rockeye. For You in 1990 achieved heavy radio play on my local commercial station in Lancashire but again, in contrast to number 21 in America, nothing here. Plenty of US bands did make it in Britain in the eighties and nineties but sadly not The Outfield. There is footage of them from the Wogan show in 1989 on the BBC performing playback of Voices of Babylon, introduced as a band going places, but still no hits here. I thought it was great and still do that a band from the east end of London managed to break big in the USA. There is some footage from local news in London of them in the early days around 1985/ 86 about how they had succeeded in America. By all accounts Tony Lewis and John Spink were great people ( not forgetting drummer Alan Shacklock) and it is too sad that both are now gone. The news about Tony Lewis last week was a big shock but the music will endure.

I don't often get hooked quickly on a band, but I remember hearing the opening vocal line for "Your Love" and loving it. Bought the CD right away and my friend and I would come home after school, put it on repeat in his basement and play ping pong for hours and sing along. Thanks Tony.

You conduct the absolute best interviews! You ask the exact questions I am thinking, especially the Voices of Babylon meaning. I was that heavy metal teenager in the 80’s, but oh man, did I love the Outfield. It breaks my heart to see so many of our music hero’s pass away. Thanks for putting this together for us!! The Outfield has been one of those bands like the Beatles for me that inspired me musically and is a big influence on all of my music to this day. Tony's voice was what I aspired to... This to me by far is the hardest loss to date of any artist I've looked up to over the years. Tony will be missed, I'm just glad we have his music to keep him in our memory for the rest of our days. RIP Tony!!

I was lucky enough to see these guys play live. Definitely one of the more under-appreciated bands of the 80s.

Great music sticks around and stands the test of time. It is amazing how songs like "Your Love" were vilified in the early 90s, but stuck around to be enjoyed as much today, maybe more, than when it was released. If you are ever at a party/bar and "Your Love" comes on, look around the room. You will immediately see people light up. That's the power of great pop music. Simply put, The Outfield wrote a pop classic.

Play Deep was a sensational album. The Outfield is obviously known for Your Love. Probably one of the greatest pop songs of all time.But Play Deep is an album where every song on the album is an absolute gem. If you haven't heard the whole album I would strongly recommend you do so. You will not be disappointed.

I remember when Play Deep came out in ‘85. That sound spun my head around, and I never stopped loving their music. I wish I had gotten to see them live. Their music is a happy place for me. Thanks for this interview, Professor. 💔

Thank you SO much for putting this together and sharing it with the fans, Adam. It is an odd thing that you can be so deeply touched by a person that you have never met. But as you say, you get to know someone through their song and lyric. When the news of Tony's passing came my way, I was simply devastated. To lose John was difficult. And now that we have lost 2/3 of, what I consider to be, one of the most talented, and yet, underrated bands of all time - it is just overwhelming. Seeing this interview and hearing your appreciation for The Outfield's music brings me comfort. From a guy that has every studio album that they have ever recorded, plus their first four on vinyl, I again say "thank you".

3:40 in the morning and I'm lying in bed watching The Professor interview one of my musical heroes and I can't stop crying. Tony, John and Alan got me through some tough times in my youth and they were just brilliant. I was heartbroken when John passed and now to lose Tony so young. God bless and keep his family through this terrible time. Professor I thank you deeply for all you do for all of us. Till we all meet again in the next life Tony. Rest in peace my brother.

Feeling pretty sad right now. I had seen the the interview the professor had done with Tony Lewis about a month ago. I was glad that he was still making music. The Outfield was an important band in my life when I was a younger man. I had all their albums. I even got to see them once. I think that they opened for another bad, or I saw them at a state fair in the 80's. About 1985 I think. What I remember is that they sounded just like the album! They were great! I still listen to the Outfield all the time. RIP Tony Lewis. Your voice will never fade away. Because the "Outfield " lives on.

So sad. RIP Mr Lewis. I was fortunate enough to see The Outfield on their “ Bangin’ “ album tour and these guys were fantastic live. Tony’s vocals were and will always be one of a kind and his live singing was just like the studio. I always thought of them as an 80’s version of The Beatles. Tony Lewis will be sadly missed by this long time Outfield fan. At least Tony and John will be reunited. Thanks for the awesome music you made while you were here.

thought i heard an angel Everytime you Cry song and video of sky like heavens opened up. It should be the song of the year 2020 just another hard hit with tonys death. we have coronavirus,no food,no job,no money,looting ,rioting and politicians not taking care of citizens all over the world. Song just gets me describes losing loved one too fast didnt call to say good bye and should have corona caused death within few days all over the WORLD. what did we learn our politicians didnt take care of us or children that couldnt go to school because of virus or get food they needed? WE learned TO TAKE CARE OF EACHOTHER ALL OVER THE WORLD. thanks TOny for the music

What an Honor for you to Have sat with Tony. As An Avid Musician, I will say, Tony & John were a Lennon / Mc Cartney Duo..... Their Harmonies were Stellar together. Tonys Vocals & The Stacked Vocals were second to none. John’s Playing, His unique tones & Phrasing were Amazing. Then With Alan Drumming and the tones kept it all in the pocket. Just a great band. Play deep album is hung in my studio and it’s one of my top 10 of all time! Rip Tony & John!!!! :(

There was a tragedy in my life at the time Diamond days album came out and the song "for you" absolutely crushed me, still does anytime I hear it! So sad but such beautiful vocals on that song! Thanks for posting this!

I, absolutely, LOVE these guys! So underrated. I would listen to the radio for hours as a ten year old kid, in my living room just waiting to hear “Your Love” & “All the Love in the World”. These guys were awesome and their music will remain timeless. Glad I got to experience it first hand. Such a GREAT interview! Tony seems like such a humble, awesome, down to Earth guy. The moment I heard "Your Love" on the radio, I literally got on my bike, rode to the mall, bought the "Play Deep" cassette, and spend the ENTIRE summer wearing out that tape. And then buying another and wearing THAT ONE out. Then eventually getting the CD. Definitely one of my top 5 "desert island" records. Loved Tony's voice, and though he's gone, so glad there's a robust legacy. Great interview, as always!

There was only one decade that had good music ... and we all know the one. First song I heard from Outfield was “Say it isn’t so” ... IMO the best song they put out. Still playing there songs yet today. They had their own unique sound.

I remember so many of my singer peers, including myself, couldn't touch "Your Love." Tony sang high, rich and near operatic. What a distinctive Tenor voice. Man, gonna miss this guy.

I was 20 when this album came out in 1985, and I had to go to 3 malls to find the cassette version of the album because it was selling out so fast. Amazing interview. Didn’t even know he died last year. Damn..

There was so much more to this band than Play Deep. The Outfield was one of the few where you'd rarely find a track you'd skip... Check out Voices of Babylon, my favorite album. And then there are some great unreleased songs that few know about... Kiss the Rain, Midnight Moves, Seven Days, and Don't Tell Me for example. Tony was such a tremendous, humble talent who will sorely be missed!

All of our hero's are passing away recently. For me it's Eddie Van Halen. It really puts your life in perspective, even though our hearts and memories are 30+years younger than our actual age.
