Professor of Rock interviews Tony Lewis from The Outfield. Tony Lewis (singer and bass player from The Outfield) talks to Professor of Rock about the story behind the classic 80s hit song, "Your Love". Thank you to Professor of Rock.
@Mark Magoo All the stuff I've read online just said he died suddenly. I think the most logical conclusion at this stage is a heart attack. But as you said we will have to wait and see.
Wrote this legendary song in 20 mins. Amazing how such great things come into our lives so unexpectedly. It's as if music chooses us. Rest well Tony Lewis. We are forever grateful for your gift to the world. You are missed
There are a lot of singers out there, myself included, who just cannot cover that tune in that key with Tony's awesome operatic tone quality. Absolutely stellar vocal. It's one of my all-time favorite songs and vocal.
@Lisa Surlie they didn't die on drugs they Died John Spinks got Liver Cancer Tony Lewis no cause of death Regg Webb got dieses they didn't use drugs they didn't die on drugs
I remember the first time I heard "Your Love" back in 1986. The radio station KLOS in the Los Angeles area had "Two for Tuesdays," when they would play back-to-back songs from the same band. The song "Say It Isn't So" was getting mild airplay at the time as The Outfield's initial single from Play Deep, but then it was paired with "Your Love." This made for a magical combination that catapulted this band's popularity in Southern California and made me a lifelong fan. I have enjoyed every single album they have produced.
I love this story! We still have "two for Tuesday" on one of our local classic rock stations (Led Zeppelin.. AC/DC.. Tom Petty.. Lynyrd Skynyrd.. etc..) I always try to guess what the second song will be 😊
@@peachbellini2615 We had it here in CHICAGO on the WLUP FM98. 2 songs 4 x`s on the hour by the same artists. Also...the LUP had 10 at 10. 10 songs by the same artists at 10AM. My favorite of course was: Get the LED OUT! at 10PM. 30 minutes of ZEPPELIN songs uninterrupted for half an hour. I wont get into the MIDNIGHT album segment from the LUP. I missed many a school night staying up late b`cause of that.
Use your love is one of those enduring songs that you never tire of. I mostly listen to hard rock, Motörhead, Black Sabbath. But I have to admit I really like this song.
I just found out Tony died , only 62 yrs old , so sad , They had a lot of great songs , not just Your love ...I have a few of there CDs and they are all well done .. RIP Tony , you have influenced a lot of musicians and your songs helped many people .
One of the only songs i play at my rock n roll dive bar of 30 yrs that is just as popular w the college kids of today as it is w the money spending older crowd. tunes that are Multi generational sing alongs w a good groove are gold in my biz. This rockin but mid tempo classic is also a terrific transitional song that is great going from 80's rock into the newer pop punk genre. In the downtown bar district my bar is in i am literally playing tunes for my life w every song i choose as when i play a less than stellar tune folks simply go to one of the many other bars, nightclubs within a stones throw of my front door which makes my music choices as owner of my bar since 1990 what determine how well my family eats that week. While i was playin mpls mn songs by husker du,the replacements n soul asylum at my then underground alt rock/punk bar this song was a big hit but today it is even bigger and has aged very well (like a good bottle of bourbon)unlike so much other music from those days.
@@jude999 I love that the Prof of Rock has such a good ear for the songs that rewrote the great american songbook during the rock era and his videos give me ideas for songs that i can build era/genre sets around as without a strong positive vibe from the music any downtown bar nightclub will under perform and is one of the things that many new bar owners overlook or just dont get which leads to their failure.good tunes tend to dress up your operation while disguising your flaws helping build that all important word of mouth.
Another one of my favorite memories of music from the 80's! First Neil! Then Eddie! Now Tony! FFS! 20/20 will be remembered for all the wrong reasons unfortunately! Absolutely one of the most Devastating and heartbreaking periods in my 51 years of life! RIP Tony! Thanks for the memories!
Tony could never bear the death of John Spinks, his great friend from youth, in 2014, and the grief was carried further. He was locked up in his house for 4 years, and when he decides to resume music his album is called "Out of the darkness", and his single "Into the light", trying to reaffirm that he has returned to the light and does not have those self-destructive thoughts or depressive. Well, his grief was stronger and he went to be part of the celestial choir with the greats who have left this year. I am a huge fan of The Outfield and I am very touched by his passing. Greetings from Chile.
I don’t care what style of music you play or whatever, this single song, just this song, right here, is part of The Great American Song Book for the ages. Even the world over!!! It’s so tuneful and fun and has everything you could ever want out of a piece of music, it’s perfect!! From start to finish!! Even if I was Beethoven, I’d hang this over my contemporaries!! It’s just that good!! 👍
I love how songs that become these loved classic hits often are unexpected by the artist. They think it probably won’t be that well received. But it ended up becoming a timeless classic
Play Deep is still one of my favorite albums of all time..... Every song on it is outstanding. The emphasis of the drums front and center with Tony's amazing and unique voice never gets old to me
Thanks Tony. I remember when I first learned the computer and was able to watch you-tube videos. I think one of the best parts of it was being able to watch "Your Love" the official video as much as I wanted and reminisce.
Earned a full ride hockey scholarship to a D2 college. When I was signing my contracts (1986) , your love was playing in the background. Special place in my heart, thanks, John and Tony!
The first time I heard the song I thought it was by the Police. Today I'm still a big fan of The Outfield. Tony's singing was so extraordinary and the songs were just great. The debut album "Play Deep" is a timeless classic for me. And every time I hear a song from them I have a smile on my face. Rest in peace John and Tony, your music makes you immortal
Oddest of oddest of things. Foundmy old PLAY DEEP CD. Popped it in the player in the car. Blasted my speakers like I did back in those 80's. Got home and wanted to see whatever happened to my beloved Tony Lewis. Well world, tonight I found out he suddenly passed away. I'm actually sitting here with tears pouring down my face. My God, what a loss. My sincere sympathies to his wife, 2 daughters and grandchildren. I'm shocked and so deeply saddened. What a great humble man. This news really threw me for a loop. I'm so sad. The outfield rocked. RIP Tony, your voice resonates forever.
First Concert I ever saw live was OutField, they were the opening act touring for Play Deep. They walked out on stage in shorts and T-shirts, nothing flashy and Tony said "Hello Kansas" in his east London accent it was in Sandstone Amphitheater just a stones throw from KCMO. Needless to say the rocked it, and I have been a fan ever since. One of the best 3 piece bands in history....very underrated.
My 14 year old was playing Your Love in 2024. I asked how this came about and her answer was TicToc. My wife then told that YL reminded her of college and flying to Germany to visit me (newlyweds) while on US military assignment there in 1999. 1985, 1999, 2024 and so on. That tunes got legs.
I was 23 when Your Love came out. I played the crap out of all of their cassettes. Yes, cassettes! 😉 They brought me such happiness. John and Tony made the world a better place through their music.
I recently played this with my friend's 8 year old in the car and she IMMEDIATELY got this song. Huge props to producer Bill Wittman for the fat sound of the first two albums. His profound influence on the great sound of the Outfield is very apparent after he was dropped before the Voices of Babylon album which is thin and washed out. This song locks me into forever young.
Dont rest in peace Tony and John. Keep rocking just as all the music you gave us always will. You guys will be alive and pumping those hits until my last breath. Others wont admit. But I'll surely join when my time comes mates!
Damn Tony. He looked so young as we all did at some point, and will be in the future. Damn brother! Glad your still here and glad you went down in history 😀
RIP Tony You music made my life back in the late 80s. I knew ever song word for word and played them in the car where ever i went. Eternal Peace Brother..
Looking forward to seeing you in Pittsburgh sometime. Until then, "Play Deep' and "Bangin" will hold me over! Thanks for sharing the behind-the-scenes on one of the greatest songs of the 80s!
The outfield grew on me over time I was into Def Leppard acdc foreigner srv in 85 86 this was all over the radio and MTV I was a fan still am today.we can't runaway from our ages I know personally.
R.I.P. Tony, I am so sad because your music was par of my best time in life, my youth. Thanks a lot, and goodspeed. All my love from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
What I find amazing is the fact that he probably never realized what an impact he had shaping the 80s in general. Why do you think you got used in a game like vice City? When you think '80s, you think of songs like this? Blaring through the stereo on a warm summer day.
I belong to a HUGE Outfield fan club on FB, with many fans from all over the world. I have transcribed all of these interviews with Tony and shared them in the group, so that FB magic could translate it into their preferred languages. I enjoyed doing it. And it was truly appreciated.
My husband wrote those words, Josie was his mother's best friend and would visit Delaware every summer. He was the drummer for the Outfield for a brief time and helped write Your Love, Since You've Been Gone, and some others. He laid the bass beat of those songs. He laid down the beat and had the words. Carl Widen was his name. They called him CW. He was a studio drummer for A&M, at the same time Outfield needed a new drummer. He went on the road with them for over 100 cities around the globe. He spent time in England and stayed with Tony. All this was before I met him. The summer of 2001, After I met him, he was flown to sit in for the Outfield's drummer who had gotten ill, he played at the Collisium. He also played and sang with them at a gig in Dewey Beach, Delaware. He left the band after a disagreement with John over rights to his music because John claimed it, I was surprised and saddened to hear Tony not acknowledge this about Your Love
Vastly underated, under appreciated, good guy. Worked as crew back in the day. The energy in the shows from all three of the band was unreal, phil had us in to take his mixing and fx instructions , not much at all. But if reverb and delay, massive bass thumping your chest and effortless vocal strength. And John Spinks bless him, always treated crew with huge respect, decent guys and a massive loss both of them. As musicians , song writers, storytellers, husbands and friends . The world was better having them share their talent , and friends and family for being part their life. Sad to the day .
Just found this interview, Adam. Very, very good. How did you feel when Tony died? That must have been such a weird feeling for you. I just can't believe that 2/3rds of this band is now dead. I mean damn they just came out in 1986 so they're not even one of the old bands, really. Damn, that's a tough one. They did some really great songs. I still do love "Your Love," but my personal favorite of theirs is "Since You've Been Gone" from the second album. That song is just absolute perfection and the music video is incredible. Love these guys. They are sorely missed in today's inferior music age.
Lightning struck in Johns flat that instant. What a story! 20 min to write that hit!! That 20 min has made its mark in music and to the fans....it has lasted and its almost 40 years later. Damn...we are getting old, but the good news is the song isn't. 😂
This guy is a relatively small fellow, an unassuming, everyday looking guy. My God, his vocals on that song, "Your Love" blew me away. I was very surprised back in the mid 1980s when I first saw this little guy, Tony Lewis, with the booming beautiful voice singing the song in the video. Hats off to you, you wrote and sang a song that is both remembered by, and loved by, millions and millions of people. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4N1iwQxiHrs.html
