In this video I take an in-depth look at the ATLAS Throttle Lock. While it hasn't always worked perfectly for me, I figured out why and made it work.

I'm on a 1090 Adventure R, I think people need to remember this isn't meant to be the same level as factory cruise control. It is a great aid when you want to just take a break for a few minutes. Ya, it slips some, it doesn't hold the exact speed as no throttle lock would, but when you are on a long straight stretch? Long down hill? Yep amazing. And just like your video at the end, you get your hand down on your tank/bag and let the tired palm take a break.

Amazing comment. All true. And while I would take factory cruise over this in a heartbeat, the Atlas Throttle lock is infinitely better than nothing. I also found that on long rides I could still rest my throttle hand on the throttle with the Atlas engaged. It held a little better and I’m not using much grip to simply maintain speed. Thanks so much for your comment.

thanks for the indepth review. I was looking to get these but I have OEM heated grips that were installed by the workshop and I am not sure now if I have that ridge described or I have enough space there to put this throttle lock there. Will have to take a closer look.

Thanks so much for your comment. I really appreciate it. I know there are others that have heated grips and very successfully use the Atlas Throttle Lock. I believe most with heated grips use the bottom controls. But definitely look into it. Thanks again.

i tried one of these and simply couldnt get the grip pad to bite into my plastic switch housing. spwnt alot of time trying to improve but nothing worked. KTM 1090. maybe too much space between grip and switch housing? maybe too much spring tension? not sure. anyways gave up on it. wasted $200

Thanks so much for your comment. I suspect that it wasn’t getting a good grip because it was twisting on your throttle tube. This is what was happening to me. This is why I used hockey tape. To give it more to bite on. It is a great product when it work’s correct. I hope you can get it installed and working for you. Thanks again.

A question - if you regularly use the kill switch when starting the bike and turning it off, does the Top Kit version get in the way? I've been thinking about one of these for a long, mostly-highway trip that I'm doing soon, but I use my kill switch all the time and I feel like I'd love it for boring highway rides but would get annoyed every time I reach for the kill switch. Also, you mentioned the flange - I had to shave mine down when I installed heated grips. I hadn't realized that the flange would matter for this, can you explain that in a bit more detail?

Thank you so much for your comment. As one who never uses the kill switch, you made me go look. If you are used to hitting the kill switch without moving your hand much, the Atlas will be in the way. But I never notice it when starting my bike. If you can get used to moving your hand around the Atlas, then I promise you will love having it for the long rides. If I'm just riding to work, I don't use it often. But it's a game changer on long trips. As for shaving down the flange, if the Atlas doesn't have a good grip, then there is potential for side-to-side movement which will stop it from having a good grip when "locked". Your mileage may vary of course. I actually made a slight mod after making this video. I used a Dremel and shaved a groove into the flange for the Atlas to sit in. It's perfect. Thanks again. Feel free to ask any more questions.

@@UrAvgRider Awesome, thanks for the quick reply. I'm definitely used to being able to hit the kill switch without moving my hand. I really wish the Bottom kit was an option, but I don't think I have enough clearance around my tank, and the wire for my heated grip might get in the way. That makes sense about the movement - that aspect might not be a huge issue for me since the flared part of my grip is pretty rigid. I have the Koso Apollo heated grips. Last year when I did a similar trip, I picked up a Cramp Buster, and it was ok, but I didn't feel like I noticed a huge benefit from it, and the added bulk from it felt a little weird under my fingers....so that's why I've been curious about the options for throttle locks. A local friend suggested the Omni-Cruise, which he has and likes, but it seems like it would be annoying from an ergonomic standpoint, plus it's a bit ugly....and on top of that, I was thinking about putting my handguards on for the trip, and I think I heard somewhere that the universal throttle locks like the Omni-Cruise can potentially interfere with those

Being able to push it to lock and unlock with your thumb is the best. And being able to make small adjustments to find the right throttle position is super simple. It just works.

Thanks so much for your comment, but I’m not entirely following the question. Feel free to send me pics in instagram messenger and I will do my best to answer. Thanks.

@@UrAvgRider do you have to fix this throotle control with Ice hockey grip tape. Is that good or is better when i use bigger grip tape from handlebar Racebike tape bicycle?
@UrAvgRider
@UrAvgRider Год назад
I’m not familiar with race bicycle tape. I’ll look into it. Maybe it’s even better than hockey tape. Thanks again for your comment.

The Gfyship throttle lock is only around $56 and the exact same make as the Atlas.
@UrAvgRider
@UrAvgRider Год назад
This appears to be correct. As they don’t appear to have a webpage and this is sold on Aliexpress, I assume that it is a copy/counterfeit product. Thanks for your comment.

I had one on my KTM 1090 Adv R. Biggest piece of junk ever. It never locked rather slipped. Then the device jammed where the x button wouldn't release, it delaminated where the ball bearing fell out along with spring. I threw it in the garbage where it belongs. Tried the company for a return / warranty, no luck because I was given it as a retirement gift from friends and was not the purchaser (even sent the company a video of the problem didn't seem interested)

@UrAvgRider 11 месяцев назад
Thank you for your comment. Where did it slip? On the throttle tube or with the friction pad? Not to be harsh, but I suspect it wasn’t installed correctly. And regarding the release button, is it possible some debris got into it? Is it possible you “abused” it? I have found the company to be very responsive. But without a receipt, it is possible it could have been a counterfeit item (I have seen them out there). All the same, it’s unfortunate you had this experience and you are allowed to share your opinion of course. Ride safe

@@UrAvgRider Trust me I really wanted this to work and was very excited when I got one . Wasn't a clone. Was installed correctly according to Atlas. The slippage was between the lock and switch housing, I tried everything to get it to work (off and on 3 years finally threw it in the garbage). You'll notice in the chat that I'm the 3rd guy with ktm 1090 Adventure R. Obviously doesn't work on that model of bike. Sounds like you have dealt with Atlas. Were you also having issues? Anyway regardless they don’t work as advertised and a waste of $150-$200
@UrAvgRider
@UrAvgRider 11 месяцев назад
@@capesterr1 I’m sure it wasn’t a clone. But Atlas needed to know and determine that. And one way to determine that is to see where it was purchased from. Was it purchased from an authorized dealer. And I think your comment was cutoff early. Where was the slippage?
@capesterr1
@capesterr1 11 месяцев назад
@@UrAvgRider I contacted Atlas and even sent them a video of the failure. Atlas knew full well the problem as it was clearly documented via video. What more can I say.
@UrAvgRider
@UrAvgRider 11 месяцев назад
Ok. Then without knowing where it slipped I will say that if it a) slipped on the throttle tube, it wasn’t clamped on correctly. Or more likely b) it slipped against the controls, it wasn’t installed close enough, the wrong sized friction pad was used, the controls weren’t clean enough, or the controls weren’t dry enough. And in my case, the Atlas was twisting when “locked”. Which is why I used hockey tape to provide more grip.
