I think I may have watched every tanning video on RU-vid now. This is one of the easiest and best ones to follow for sure. Thanks for posting.

Started tanning hides using an already old library book, lots of guess work, a few successes. I used a smooth cypress knee to work while drying. That was long before the internet. I was recently given a frozen beaver tail and find my interest in tanning reignited. Thanks for putting so much time and effort into this video. You're very succinct without being short on information. If you ever get to texas look me up, meanwhile I'll be enjoying your channel.

I’ve had very good results using small nails to hold skin to a piece of plywood propped up at a bit of an angle to allow moisture to run off. It stays nice and flat.

If you took a 2x4 and cut it so it looks like the letter A along the 3.5 inch side and made it four feet long. Next bury about a foot or two into the ground with the pointy side up you could work the hide over it while it is drying and it will come out soft and pliable.

You’re a brave man doing all this in your kitchen! I am relegated to the garage and shed when dealing with pelts! Great video

That is NOT a pickle. It’s just salt. You need to add acid to make a pickle solution.

At what point do you wash the fur with dish soap?

If you make a cut , the middle is still green and you can do nothing with without redo processes

How long did the process take after the tanning solution was put on until the hide was finished?

You're not kidding! It is rather satisfying, though. The goal is to make things out of the tanned goods

Where do you get $25 bucks from? Fur auction? No need to do anything more than fleshing, boarding and brushing for that. This vid is in prep for crafting where you can make between $100-$150 for hooping or $300-$400+ for gloves, muffs, hats, etc...

Very satisfying task working with natural products and doing things by hand. Not for lazy people or the money hungry.

Thank you Al! I try my best to. I do what I do because I love nature and the outdoors. If I am going to take an animal's life for population control, meat, etc.. I am going to use as much of that animal as I possibly can

What about ocean water instead of pickling salt water
@wildmaine4341
@wildmaine4341 Год назад
In my opinion, I am going to have to say no as ocean water has iodine naturally occurring in it. That you and the amount of salt in ocean water may not be enough to properly change the structure of the hide. Neat idea on using a natural resource though!

You want a ph of 1.5 - 2 you won't get that with just salt water. Cup and half of salt and 3 Oz citric acid per gallon of warm water, let cool, put your hide in. It works very well. Might I add that while red bottle works, there are much better available. Currently using Trubond 1000b and really like the results. Makes breaking much easier.
