In this video, we provide a functional walkthrough of the iconic ARP 2600, complete with patch examples and a blow-by-blow walkthrough of the panel. To read more about ARP's history and the 2600, check out our Signal article here: www.perfectcircuit.com/signal...
The 2600 is one of the first semi-modular synthesizers, which means it provided musicians considerably greater ease of use than with the prior gargantuan modular systems, all without sacrificing any sonic potential. Used by musicians such as Stevie Wonder, Edgar Winter, Joe Zawinul, and even used to create the voice of R2-D2 in Star Wars, the 2600 has permeated popular culture with its bubbling sound effects, soaring leads, and thumpy, huge bass lines.

I grew up with the younger brother of ARP's head of R&D Phil Dodds. He was the cool cat playing the notes to the aliens in "Close Encounters". In early 70's when Phil came home for a weekend he'd bring a 2600. He was a big inspiration to me; long sessions at kitchen table with sketches of developing technologies like key velocity, envelope follow, sequencing, etc. led to my enrollment in Electronic Music Production courses at Long Beach City College. It was a great era....... the original Whole Earth Catalog had some synthesizer ads, such as PAIA catalogs. I'm pondering a purchase of the Behringer 2600. I much appreciate the well-executed signal flow guidance here.......

A lot of folks hate on the B2600 but it’s great that people can afford good sounding instruments. If you can afford the grey/blue version, the capacitors in the filter are better, giving a rounder tone. Much closer to the original 2600. The developer of the B2600, AMSynths, is relatively present on RU-vid comments, and has been a great source of info about the design.

No high pass filter you say? Run a saw tooth to multiple. From mult through the filter on to vca. Run the same saw tooth from multiple to the inverter and on to the vca. Mix these together. Everything below the filter cutoff will be cancelled and you get a high pass filter. Very nice video!

Yup. It’s been a bit since I’ve done something like that so I’m not sure if the filter slope would look like a highpass filter (pretty sure it does). Another thing, if the 2600 has filter amplitude decrease to compensate for increased resonance it may throw off the perfect phase cancellation. As I do have filters that behave like that, I could test that out too. Also how difficult is it to perfectly match gain on different signal paths in the 2600? Probably not very if you run things all the way hot and then just attenuate everything with that output gain slider so you’re not dealing with annoyingly loud levels.

The Behringer remake has added some functions that aren’t there on the original. The oscillators have more outputs, you can PWM osc 3, the pitch cv to filter is variable, you get the LFO and portamento that was on the 2600 keyboard module. You get a normalled LFO to osc 1 pitch, rather than the osc 2 fm input. The gate and trig patch points next to the AR envelopes are inputs on the Behringer, so you can patch in CV from a keyboard, a necessary addition in a synth that comes without its own keyboard, with the outputs being shifted to the left hand side of the panel. It gets the sound pretty close, too.

Great video, love the clear & concise rundown, thank you! One fun fact, you can get a high-pass response from the filter by sending your oscillator/s to the voltage processor, invert the signal, then send it back to the filter mixer; it will phase-cancel and give you a high-pass filter. That’s an old modular trick and it works on the 2600.

This is a really helpful video for someone starting out with this synth. I haven't got a real 2600, just the Cherry Audio VST (I had the free Arppe VST before that), because a) I want to learn more about sound design and this was intended as a teaching synth and b) I have been a fan of a certain J M Jarre's music since I was a kid and his stuff was new. Even the modest VST can make some awesome sounds and in a DAW setting the possibilities are endless.

What a beast of an instrument. I just cannot afford the real thing so I have the Behringer 2600 Blue Marvin. I am partially deaf but heck I can hear the difference between the real deal and a BARP. But lets be fair. It is also 20 times more expensive. I will use what you have tought me on this video to progress with my two BARPS. Thank you for you brilliant demo. I just love the original keyboard as well. I may redesign an Arturia keystep to include all the gubbins there on the left side and enclose it in a nice lookalike casing.

Half way through and really enjoying this. Thanks! One thing that puzzles me about this design is that the only VCO that can do sine and triangle waves is also the only one that allows PWM. I mean... what if I want a sine or triangular LFO controlling my PWM? Yes, I know there are ways around it - just wondering why that wasn't considered. It would have been relatively straightforward, I think, to add PWM to VCO3 as well. Even moving it to VCO3 and no longer supporting it on VCO2 would have been a better choice. Anyway, that's nitpicking, obviously, because this is one hell of a fantastic beast of a synth :)
@edwardnixon1782
@edwardnixon1782 4 года назад
For me, yes, the overview is great. But... that last patch is the most interesting thing I heard/saw. Being an Arturia ARP 2600 V owner that is. It's hard to see the routing because the cables cross and are obscured behind the keyboard. And the combiner voltages sent to the envelope gate are likely the key but I don't get it, can't see it. But thanks: it's rare to see a demo where the presenter displays a real musical sensibility and then demo's it with the sounds he makes. (Incidentally, a note to the editors: the 'b-roll' shots sometimes come at inopportune times, just when the viewer is sussing out the patching or the movement of controls/knobs; a little more awareness to the audio and the dialog would really improve things.)

Is the PWM really normalised to the noise generator? At least it doesn't sound like that. Only adding noise to the sound without any modulation of the pulse width.
@jean-louispech4921
@jean-louispech4921 4 года назад
It adds noise by the PWM. Don't forget that you can think the PWM like a delayed reverse saw added to a saw, when you change the PW you change the delay. When you change this delay continuously, it is like a pitch change for the reversed saw. With the classic triangle PWM , the reversed saw swap between two pitch ( symmetric around the central note ) , because you have two different slopes (up and down). With the noise modulation the signal of modulation generate several random slopes along the time and then generate noise, because it generate unrelated frequencies.
@cornerliston

Divinital they’ll likely both be the same, since literally all either of them has to do is crack one open and copy the circuitry. If anything, I’d bet on Behringer’s being better, since theirs will be a 1:1 clone and Korg likes to do strange things to their repros, like they did with the MS-20 Mini.
@bluehole6019
@bluehole6019 4 года назад
Divinital why though? I’m honestly curious.
@bluehole6019
@bluehole6019 4 года назад
Divinital Oh ok, so no reason and you just want to perpetuate a bullshit elitist mentality that should’ve died out a long time ago? It’s always the same thing. “Oh, clones are amoral, they’re stealing money and ideas from the original company” “Oh, clones don’t sound the same even though they’re literally built from original specs like 99% of the time, and I don’t have the ear to tell for myself if it sounds right so I’m just gonna say it doesn’t because fuck clones right?” The one and only reason Korg is even hopping on the clone bandwagon (which keep in mind that regardless of whether or not it has “ARP” stamped on it, it’s STILL a clone, even coming from Korg, because it’s not part of the original run of 2600s) is because Behringer is making tons of money giving people what they actually want, recreations of the synths that they love, at a price that reflects how dirt cheap it is to build a synth out of components that have been widely available since the dawn of synthesis. Life’s too short to worry about this kind of stuff. I’ve literally done side by side comparisons between my original Moog Model D and the Behringer and there’s VERY little, if any difference. You heard the word clone and said “no, it can’t be right, because the logo on the case is different!” Don’t even bother to actually do research, listen to demos, and actually form an opinion, because your own snobbery has forced you to deprive yourself of owning something that you’ll likely never be able to get your hands on otherwise. So, YOU enjoy trying to coax Prophet 5 sounds out of a Minilogue, because the Rev2 “just wasn’t the real thing”. I feel sorry for you.

@@bluehole6019 they did a solid reissue of the Odyssey years before Behringer.. the MS20 mini is excellent as well and was the 1st real analog classic reissue from any of the big synth manufacturers. Hats off to Korg for doing this, I love it!

Ok sorry for this dumb question, he keeps saying normalization what does that mean in this context and he says it a lot so it must be important
@beyondthegong

derek jurovich A synth like this has a number of input jacks (for patching and signal routing). These jacks are “normalled” internally so that the signal running through it ALWAYS comes out of the output, even if you’ve plugged in no other patch cables to re-direct the signal to your liking. These connections are normalled, or are “normally connected” to other relevant or expected points in the circuit. This approach keeps the sound flowing through the machine while you’re plugging and unplugging patch cables to experiment with your own signal routing ideas. Most current modular synths do not behave like this and have a steeper learning curve.

I'll wait for the version of Behringer, 1000 dollars cheaper than Korg, I've learned the lesson of the cloned oddysey.

Currently 440 vs 575 in euro's, was the initial price difference much bigger?

Surely the Behringer one will keep the price of the KORG one down? That’s what I’m hoping
@OttosTheName
@OttosTheName 4 года назад
@@DanielPerryMusic Yeah probably. Strangely enough Behringer announced it first. Either Korgs will be noticably different (no keyboard or smaller?) or they must be willing to make it quite affordable.

Basically 4000 for a duophonic albeit Uber famous synth. Idk I can’t imagine paying for that where as for 2000 more you can get a polyphonic Moog one. The matriarch is so much more for less as well. Idk what to think. It is beautiful though

Its a serious investment but the thing is that each one mentioned is unique in it's own way. up until lately it was more like 10,000.00 for a ARP 2600 that is in real good shape. At the same time u can easily spend several times that getting into a Moog Modular system. Take all the time you need, but once you decide then make sure you get what you really are going to be happy with. ;-}
