Disgraced ex-Post Office boss Paula Vennells gave evidence for the first time to the public inquiry today.
The former chief executive led the company from 2012 to 2019 but she has faced heavy scrutiny for her role during the Horizon scandal and was formally stripped of her CBE by the King earlier this year.
Today, The Telegraph revealed how the Post Office executive joked about drinking champagne in late December 2018 after finding out she would receive the honour.
More than 900 sub-postmasters were wrongfully prosecuted between 1999 and 2015 due to faulty Horizon software incorrectly recording shortfalls on their accounts.

It's just not credible, in such a position, to claim absolute ignorance of so many things and to have had so little curiosity about so many postmasters being accused of false accounting. Saying the organisation 'lost sight of what was happening in the individual post offices' is an enormous admission that the organisation had become entirely detached from its core role and purpose.

Saying sorry won’t bring the innocent old man that went to jail and had the rest of his life ruined and then died before this court case today, put her in jail! Horrible woman

Watched the whole stream live. History in the making. Those mails from Tim McCormack to Vennells were the highlight of the day. They absolutely hit the nail on the head.

Clearly she was not skilled enough for the job she was hired for, out of her depth, just another tick on her CV as with many other top executives who come from very different backgrounds and industry.

I disagree. She is very skilled and paid millions in bonus pension payment. Her motivation is clear. Money, greed, ego.this is what drives her.

So basically they are ALL protecting themselves against BEING ARRESTED and CHARGED and is a total waste of bloody time. This ALL should have been under caution! No wonder NO ONE IS EVER HELD ACCOUNTABLE OR ARRESTED.

Vennells and other executives knew what was going on. Once they were aware of the faulty Horizon system ALL prosecutions should have been halted and those already convicted should have had their cases re-opened and examined thoroughly. Of course, no one at the top thought any of this would come to light. They did their best to keep it out of the public domain. It is thanks to Sir Alan Bates, Lord Arbuthnot, Private Eye and Computer Weekly that the cat is well and truly out if the bag.

The most ineffective CEO of all time, or the most ruthless, cold and calculating?? Everything Tim McCormack said is correct. Vennels and her entire team should be prosecuted for their persecution of Postmasters.

All the executives and investigators and solicitors have presented themselves to the inquiry as misled, poorly informed, the system was the problem, they were blind sighted, it was someone else to blame, information was withheld from them, they were not an IT person, they didn’t understand. But of course the email trails tell a different story of unmitigated aggression, bullying, intimidation and arrogance toward the sub-postmasters, a lack of concern for their well being and justice, a desire to protect the brand no matter the human cost in terms of unjustly ruined lives and a willingness to never properly investigate potential miscarriages of justice. One hopes the shambolic parade of deceit is met with police action, but the inquiry should go much further and consider the way the government, happy with the strangely impressive profits the PO were showing, were happy to accept the cover up, until the group action of post masters, along with The Guardian and assistance of some decent MPs from both main political parties ( notably not the Liberals) forced the truth to come out.

Vennels wanted gen on the mental health of a complainant. How did she intend to pursue this? Phone hacking, private detectives, data theft, burglary? She sounds like a tabloid editor pre-Leverson. Meanwhile she presents herself as a victim - classic sociopath .
