In memory of Alasdair Gillies (1963 - 2011) 

I've listened to this several times, can't get enough. I was fortunate enough to get lessons from him at Moravian college in Bethlehem. He even tied my elk hide bag in for a class. Mesmerizing to watch him play. RIP

Alasdair was my first ever judge when I first ever competed at the age of 12. I had to play him a 4-part 2/4 march. And I was so freaking nervous. At that time, he was literally ranked as the best bagpiper in the world. Despite my nerves, I did so well that Alasdair awarded me the 1st place Gold Medal for a 2/4 march. I won 1st in Hornpipe/Jig and 2nd in Piobreached from Ed Neigh and was awarded the Piper of the Day plaque for the entire highland game. It was quite the experience and I still have the handwritten notes from Alasdair himself regarding my performance. It's so sad how he went. At the time his son was a grade above me. He was pretty good too.

For all of us...great pipers....amateurs...eternal beginners(as myself)...this kind of MEN will never be forgotten...pipes are not, somply, a musical instrument....are a FEELING

I am left speechless.. It still pains me to this day that I did not pursue my career with the Queen's Own Highlanders pipe band. R. I. P. Mr Gillies.

Alasdair was one of my favorite pipers..... not only for the piping, but because he followed his dreams and went to Canada to play. I will miss him.

one of the best things about Alasdair was not recognizing him when you saw him, but him remembering who you were, even if he only met you once

The top light music competitor of his era, although the term light music is definitely dim. He was a fantastic MSR player, taught from his early years by an excellent player and teacher - his father Norman. What he learned later only added embellishments to an already formed piper.
