Dr. Christi explains in detail what to expect when you undergo an often scary test: cystoscopy (aka bladder scope). This test is often recommended by urologists in the case of blood in the urine, overactive bladder or recurrent urinary tract infection. While the test is often approached with apprehension, as Dr. Christi will explain, it is not as bad as you think!
Dr. Christi Pramudji has been in private practice since finishing urology residency at Baylor in Houston in 2002. She has developed the only dedicated female urology/urogynecology practice in Houston, so you know that your unique needs are the focus.

I had this procedure done with no one else in the room. The doctor prepped me went out of the room, came back in five minutes and finished procedure, he said no one else in the room is necessary. That made me feel more comfortable and trusting.

I had bladder cancer and have probably had forty of these done. Advise my urologist gave me is priceless, make sure you keep breathing (don't hold your breath) and don't clench your butt cheeks. They always inject numbing/lubricating gel. While being uncomfortable it has never been painful.

Is it painful?
@trainmaster0217

I had two of the procedures. Worst experience of my life. When I woke up in recovery I could no longer pee. Severe pain in the abdomen that traveled up to my kidneys. Hours passed and no help. I was ready to find something sharp and stab myself in the bladder. I passed out on the floor while trying to pee with the severe massive pain. But finally a nurse there asked me if she could try to catheterize me. I begged her too. She did with a small red rubber tube and and was able to drain my bladder. Just a big tray of blood and clots. Pain was all gone. She as my guardian angel. But it didn't last. A few hours later my bladder was full again with the severe pain returning. She did it again 3 more times until I finally exploded all over the bed. I had no control anymore. I had to be hospitalized for 4 days because I got a Cystoscopy. Now I have a bladder stone and my urologist wants to do a scope. I can't do it. I'll die first. I'm on blood thinners due to a heart attack. This is just a long story short.

This procedure isn't as bad as you think it's a little painful but only a minute or two. Urodynamics is a much more difficult procedure in my opinion.

J Pol, it would depend on what the doc sees in your bladder. These are generally quick because there's not much they can do with just lidocaine jelly. Plus, they're probably only set up for a cystoscopy, instrument-wise and time-wise.

Do they remove a pollop while there in the bladder?
@ishanisarkar86
@ishanisarkar86 3 года назад
Yes they do through a cystoscope.. And the process is known as transurethral bladder resection (TURBT). P.S majority of polyps in the urinary tract or on the edges of the bladder are benign. The cells may be abnormal. But they are not cancer cells. They are benign. Thnx. Wish you a good health.

I'm having a cystoscopy and urethral dilation next month. I have IC as well. I had at least three of these done back in the 80s and they literally felt like I was being examined with a knife. The pain during the procedure was excruciating and I hurt (and bled) for days afterward. I'm hoping the scopes have changed since then. I'm concerned about that pain happening again but I have to do it before I have the dilation. My doc assured me it will be a little uncomfortable but not like in the past so I hope he's right.

szqsk8, I hate to tell you this, but there's not much difference in the scopes. Sure, the fiberoptics are improved for a better picture. Are you having it by straight local or IV sedation?
@szqsk8
@szqsk8 6 лет назад
c coop In the doc's office so it will be a local. I really don't want to have to go to the hospital and have general anesthesia for a five minute procedure. I know that in the 80s when I had three cystos the scopes were rigid and not flexible but now they are flexible so I'm hoping it won't be as painful and with less to no bleeding.
@ccoop3774
@ccoop3774 6 лет назад
szqsk8, it would be more expensive in the hospital, even if it was IV sedation, not general. If they have a flexible scope, it may be more comfortable. I have had a couple of local cystos and they were a piece of cake, but the doc just looked around, no dilation. What do you mean by IC? Interstitial Cystitis? I suppose that would make you more tender. Would the doc write you a script for a valium to take before? You would need a driver, but it may help you not hurt so badly. I hope this one's easier for you.
@szqsk8
@szqsk8 6 лет назад
c coop I just had the cysto today and it was not painful, just pressure. The doc did a urethral dilation and it's like night and day. I can't believe how much easier it is to pee. He said I will need to have the dilation a couple times of the year.

What do you give for the burning so I could ask my dr
@pskeenlic8658
@pskeenlic8658 Год назад
You can get an over-the-counter drug to help with the burning called AZO, or pyridium. It is a pill that you take that will turn your urine kind of a bright orange. But the medicine Will soothe your sore urethra after the procedure. Walgreens sells it.

@bronsonleach3573
@bronsonleach3573 Год назад
@ChristiMDHouston Is their alternative to this because you know many men can not have this done due to our urethras being too small to fit the scope down. Also to what if a man is not comfortable having a woman handling or looking at their genitals. Many urologists forget that millions of men die because of not enough male nurses and techs. Many of us would rather die than face humiliation. I went to a urologist once for chordee caused by a botched circumcision and he wanted to operate, and that is when I really knew I couldn't trust urology. Because the problem was uneven cutting of the skin. Quite simply was fixed with stretching the skin and is actually making me want to restore it because so I can teach my future kids how to clean themselves because they are not gonna deal with what I had to.

@ccoop3774
@ccoop3774 6 лет назад
Rob W.S., I see your question was awhile back. If you ever have another cysto, drinking plenty of fluids can help with the burning. My burning has only lasted through the afternoon the 2 times I've had one. It can last a little longer in a male because you have a larger tract that's irritated. The extra fluids, especially water will dilute your urine.
@carolwalters7069

This was the worse office procedure I have ever experienced in my life. If your doctor is inflicting pain, not discomfort but pain, they should be listening to you when you tell them to stop. The self-designated urologist didn't listen when I told her that the scope was sharp on one side and to STOP! She blamed me for the pain and said I clamped down on the scope. If that were true, then there would have been pain all the way around the insertion, not just on one side. The side that she hurt with the scope did bleed and did so for over a week. It's my guess that the scope had a burr on the metal that caused an abrasion or cut with the pain and bleeding. She didn't even have enough common sense to back off with the scope and check it for one, she just barged ahead. I watched her assistant clean up that scope when she was through with it and she banged it twice on the stainless steel sink. I said that it shouldn't be used again until it was retooled because her doing what she did just put a burr in the metal. She ignored me and went on. My friend makes surgical equipment and I remember him telling me in particular that these scopes are fragile and can't take being banged like that let alone dropped because you will cause a burr on the metal that will cut and injure the patient. The surface he said had to be as smooth as wet glass and this scope definitely wasn't. I will NEVER GO BACK TO HAVE ONE OF THESE DONE AGAIN! This injury has caused scar tissue and I am left with the aftermath of not voiding as well as I did before this "doctor" did the damage she has done. I would never recommend this procedure to anyone. And to say it isn't painful, I would say that is a lie too. 😠😠😠😠

@@LifeSculptbyChristiMD I see a bunch of other comments besides mine say otherwise. How do you know who will experience severe pain or not? The comments on other sites for this procedure have many, many people who also had terrible pain. I think if someone is so uncomfortable with the idea of this procedure, sedation should be given as a choice. It’s the same with an endometrial biopsy and many other procedures. As someone who went through cancer and had my bladder damaged by radiation, I need the help. However, after experiencing the pain of this procedure, I haven’t been back for any follow ups. Some of us are in pain already, and when it’s dismissed and disregarded by doctors who feel it’s no big deal, we lose our will to get help. Not everyone is the same. It’s very sad that patients even have to worry about having pain inflicted on them.

@@PeteHob Thank you for that! Sometimes these doctors have you questioning yourself, like it’s not that bad and you’re acting like a baby. I have endured so much untreated pain during my cancer journey, but pain that is inflicted on you is a whole different kind of pain. Notice how they answered my comment about having done thousands of these on patients and it is not that painful….to me it just goes to show how either they lie, or how disconnected they are from their patients’ pain. I cannot let another doctor hurt me again, so I have given up on treatments and procedures, and they don’t care one bit. 😕
