What she said: people are more effective and creative when they let themselves to be bored and spend some time doing nothing. During this time, you activate a part of your brain that is inactive when you are multitasking, which increases your productivity, your focus and your creative thoughts.

Not only is this a great talk in general, it's an awesome talk to have put in a big data conference. It's a great way to remind a very data focused industry to just take a break sometimes.

I'm sure every guy in there was pretty distracted, one way or another. She looked amazing. Great presentation.

Ikn right she isn't pretty, but long hair, cute, nice in dress. I love Ted Talks Architecture be one with long boots. I wish was talking & so forth could pull that off.

You must admit she's got nice thighs, tho. You've got to give her that one.

Omnis - I couldn't agree more. But with a PhD in psychology I'm sure she knew that when she decided what to wear for her talk. And IMHO anyone (male or female) who likes short dresses & a woman's legs would find her fascinating.

So true. I often solve issues in my business while I'm lying in the bath.

Great talk! This is so important these days, to actually have the option to be "bored". We are constantly bombarded by social media and news and stuff we have to do, we need to blank our minds once in a while to actually have an independent thought.

Just shows the extremes people will go to to avoid thinking.

That was great. Could easily imagine this same topic being presented at a Ted Talk.

In such situations I try to put my muscles in a state of relaxation. I learned this from an old book written by a doctor in the 1940's, "You must relax". You learn to identify what muscular tensions feels like (it is more subtle than most people think, they mistake the feeling of strain for it). You start with your forearms. Then move on from there. As you progress you will notice your breathing getting slow and deep. Now you don't have to read the book. Maria...will you marry me????

HellO!! Bertrand Russell died in 1970, it's still not been 50 years!! I understand the ‘about’ part, but this talk dates back to 2015, so how recent a study is she talking about?

I'm so glad that I grew up without cell phones and computers.I can't belive that this woman actually believes that she has researched something so profound which is nothing more than common sense something that is so uncommon that you need a college degree at Harvard to learn it.

I still want to be with my guy & just once, but scared he'd hurt me after told him off. Lol Doubt he would want to or apologize and not sure his place was just free today and tomorrow or just his day off tomorrow as he cuts grass etc then he takes off Sunday and soft Monday paperwork for his own biz. He is general contractor on his own. I love her on short dress & boots on other video. Love that great dress. Nice style. I wish I lost weight & had one. I can't multi tasking no more. I do one for a bit then other, cuz only have now HP, no longer laptop nor wifi. I will he more on when do. Using hot spot on my cell, which is limited. You need to breathe. Wow boredom I hate could manage it. I don't her bored no more though, cuz online, etc. No I would not shock myself heck no. I just sit and take it. Lol I love listening to her voice in earbuds. I'm bored right now, cuz didn't get to do all I really wanted to, but it's time for sleep, so tomorrow, etc. I hope. Ofc curious to read the story myself. Love Sherlock Holmes & Watson Charaters. Yeah I got that. Holmes was calm. Lol Genius. It would make me laugh in film I saw. Loved since then & when mentioned in school that think yes b4 that. Maybe was PBS, etc.

I think this lady needs to do some research on ADHD? I've seen several of her speeches and she seems to think Sherlock Holmes is normal. She seems to be normalizing Sherlock Holmes in an attempt to live up to his potential. For instance she thinks Sherlock Holmes is puffing his pipe three times to calmly think about one thing. No he isn't! The pipe is like today fidget spinners or music while doing work. It is a stimulant that allows him to regulate his distractions on a specific subject. Clues to people like him and me ARE distractions. This is why people with ADHD are prone to procrastination. We don't get bored because we are constantly seeking distractions. This is just how our mind works. I pity these people that have to seek shock to substitute your boredom. But on the same token people with ADHD are less sociable because we are constantly trapped in our heads.

None of your comment makes sense to me... She still the professional here so I'd rather trust what she is saying and check if it applies because that's in fact what makes sense to me. Did Arthur Conan Doyle ever said Sherlock has ADHD? And it has been proved scientifically that people need a time for concentrating, she already said it in the presentation. It doesn't seem like you paid attention.
