In this week's video we explore Penhale Dunes in search of the Oratory of St Piran. St Piran is the patron saint of Cornwall and is said to have landed on Perranporth Beach in the 6th century and founded a christian oratory and collegiate site. In the 12th century, a second site was chosen to build a church dedicated to St Piran.
Over the centuries, the two sites have been exposed and buried repeatedly. In Victorian times, the oratory in particular attracted a lot of attention from archaeologists and tourists. Organised archaeological digs have helped to understand their relevance, especially to the Cornish as a 'nation' and the various decisions about how to protect the site can be understood.
After exploring the dunes, we head to the coast - three miles of golden sand to enjoy! After a wander around the town, sampling some ice cream, we make our way back to the car.
The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on RU-vid, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
Frequently asked questions:
What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dog, perhaps you can make up your own name for him.

That 1st glimpse of sand & sea is breathtaking! If I can snag a day off with my offspring, I'm heading to the City to get my little piggies in the water at S.F.'s Ocean Beach or a less populated site along the Pacific Coast Hwy. Tis time to walk amongst the Redwoods once again also. Feeling that spring's here renewal time, birthday's coming up, gotta get myself outside in the sunshine real soon fever comin' on again! Cheers!

I am a senior living in Alberta Canada with mobile issues but I would so love to visit there but sadly can't. So therefore I enjoy your beautiful walks and the history to go along with them. I was born in England, in Bristol but came to Canada when I was only 5. I do have a cousin living in Cornwall and I hear from her occasionally. So keep up the beautiful videos and I love to see your sweet dog, although I have forgotten his name. Thank you for the great videos.

Lovely, Just proves that you can find a bit of peace and tranquillity if you stay away from the herd mentality. Down the Holywell bay end you get very few people on the beach. Cornish fudge ice-cream from the ice cream shak at the Lizard ! Mmmm Also Berrymans pasties at perranporth ,extra large of course !!! Keep up the good work and the erm, jokes? 😁🥟🥟🥟🥟👍

So true! Like you say, the closer we were to Perranporth, the closer the beach towels were to each other. It literally looked as if some had walked over the bridge and said 'that will do!' How much they miss!! Sarah :)

We spent many years on holiday at Perran Sands, we walked from the site round the headland to Holywell Bay but never saw this ruin. I am somewhat disappointed in my lack of observational skills that I couldn’t see a dirty great big cross on a hillock. A great video, thanks to you both. We move down to Cornwall this autumn and have a lot of catching up to do on your walks, something we are very much looking forward to doing. Thanks again.

Very interesting about St. Piran Oratory! You really do your homework before the walk - as usual 👍 I felt I was almost there when you described the flowers, heather, thyme, bees and butterflies, and with the nature sounds in the background. Amazing! You did the right thing to go paddling to Perranporth. We walked on the beach half the way from the Northern end of the beach, and up on the dunes the rest, and the latter was really strenous 😳 And we also missed the caves at the beach closer to Perranporth. But the views were anazing 🥰 Thank you for a beautiful video 🤩💞

This is a walk we have done many times over the years that we had a caravan next to the golf course, as you say much safer to walk from the golf club to the entrance of Perran Sands Holiday Park and on to Tollgate Boy, do i miss the Indian restaurant near were you got your ice creams, one of the best we have eaten in. Thank you so much for making me feel hungry.

Visited the Oratory in about 1960, the roof was intact then, very dark inside. Looks like you had good weather, we had a damp 3 weeks end June till 11 July , scortchio when we got home. Always next year.

Hi Sarah and Andrew, very glad you've done a video about St Piran. Really interesting. When I first visited there the oratory and surrounding bunker were buried under a sand dune. I was so glad when they revealed it again a few years ago. Been back to see it a couple of times since and both times it contained water, so presumably that's its normal state! Many thanks.

Yes, and if you look carefully, there is a water mark on the concrete wall, at approximately the same height as the old walls! Wish i had noticed it at the time! Sarah :0

Hi Guys, I've been really enjoying your walks since finding your channel 👌😁. I live in Cornwall with my husband and Whippet Merlin and enjoy walking so much, and what better places to walk than Cornwall eh. Unfortunately lately, I seem to have picked up a problem in one of my feet, so haven't been able to walk for a couple of weeks very far, so your walks have been a real treat to watch and not only that... I've picked up from you some amazing facts and historical stuff that I didn't know about.. including hearing that a small pasty is now called a pixie pasty...who new 😂. We have a staycation holiday coming up end of September in St Just, which we've been to a few times now for holidays, and I'm really looking forward to trying the St Just to Gwenver Sands walk that you did. I have walked the coast there a fair amount but never the inland bit, so can't wait....foot permitting of course 🙏🍀. Looking forward to seeing more from you both... happy walking 😁👌💝😘

Great video. Lovely walk. Amazing to see so many people out. Do you all mask up when you go inside businesses? In Los Angeles even vaccinated people have to wear masks indoors due to the Delta Variant.
@CornishWalkingTrails
@CornishWalkingTrails 3 года назад
The rules about masks are changing all the time, currently optional although we are continuing to wear them inside, even though we have had our jabs. We just really want to avoid COVID and it seems . simple thing to do! Sarah :)

That looked such a refreshing walk! ~ with a lovely Summer paddle in the sea on the way back and an ice-cream :) Considering he's the patron saint of Cornwall, I was surprised by the condition of St Piran's Oratory. The concrete bunker is also far too close to the original structure. I'm not sure who the official legal guardians are, but the least they could do would be to repoint the chapel inside and out with lime mortar to stabilize the walls. As you say Sarah, the water pool is not draining because of the surrounding concrete block walls (which probably sit on impermeable foundations). I'll have to get my ideas off to the the Duke of Cornwall's heritage officer!

Sarah, every time you get an ice cream, I wonder if I’m you’d really love it in a cone. Do gluten free cones not exist? X
@CornishWalkingTrails
@CornishWalkingTrails 3 года назад
Being gluten free is a funny thing! Some people wholeheartedly embrace it and make every effort others will pay a token gesture, and a cafe will reflect the attitude of the owner! If they are paying only a token gesture, then more that likely I find that 'gluten free' is not well understood and I risk a reaction so I am much happier and healthier if I assume its 'token gesture'! I've just been caught out so many times!! Sarah :)
