Dude! At the beginning, you are staring at the same light Trey does! NICE! :) :) :) I remember years ago at a show in Missoula, they were playing chess with the crowd, and to make the move that night, the audience member who got to "make the chess move" had to guess what all the songs played had in common. Key of D was the answer. I flashed to that. Thanks for posting all these.

When I tell my friends about "stitch method", I reference the power of five video and now this. It moves the jam if you can implement the method. Trey is my influence and I am sticking with you for all of your knowledge on guitar. Love all your vids. "Heavy Things" your doing.

Could you possibly do a video on the solo section of foam? The chord progression is very cool and how trey plays over it sounds super complex

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! This is the second lesson of yours I've watched and as some of the others have touched on, you're awesome. I always listen to the New years 93 Hood in absolute awe. Sure I can mess around over the chord progression but it sounds nothing like Trey. Finally someone can at least give me the bare-bones on what makes him sound so mystifying! Thank you for doing what you do

Hey Ian could you do an in the mind of Dickie Betts/Duane Allman video? Allman bros is my favorite and I try to sit and go through it all myself but I still struggle. I know they hop between major/minor pentatonic and mixolydian stuff all the time over the top of chord changes. If you broke something down like Jessica or something it would be very helpful.

May I recommend a "In the Mind of Trey Anastasio - Rhythm Concepts" video? I always enjoyed Trey's rhythmic sensibility, particularly his brand of funk that he incorporates into a lot of Phish songs/jams.

So, Stich, I find that when soloing over a faster chord progression and trying to hit the root notes of each chord as the chords are played, that there is not much creativity there. I find most of the notes in my solo are just the same 3 or 4 notes with slight variations and octave shifts. Any advice to get a better solo filled with feeling rather than the mechanical playing of the root notes? Love ya, man!
@ScottS986
@ScottS986 7 лет назад
Stitch, in this video you talk about using the E-shape major scale as a connector - wouldn't we also need to use the D shape hub that we use in the first Neverlost minor pentatonic video?
@ScottS986
@ScottS986 7 лет назад
StichMethod Guitar Awesome! And I just realized I think I meant C-shape hub. Well, whatever the equivalent of the form 3 pentatonic hub is. You knew what I meant ;)

I notice you rarely if ever use alternate picking but it appears to be only down strokes. Is this a Phish thing or just an Ian thing?

StichMethod Guitar I understand, thanks
@ScottS986
@ScottS986 7 лет назад
StichMethod Guitar This is really interesting and I've been wondering the same thing about your picking style. I'm reading two things here: up/downstrokes depending on timing (down for 1/4 and 1/8th notes, up for 16th notes ), and up/downstrokes depending on the direction of the next note. These seem like two independent concepts. Kind of a "Hybrid Economy" or "Double Economy" picking since I thought Economy referred strictly to choice of stroke based on direction like sweeping. This seems like something I've never seen explained before and I like it! It kind of looks like from your videos, it's usually a downstroke unless it's a 16th note on the same or higher (towards low E) string. There may be an exception to that rule for the high E string whereby you may do an upstroke on 1/4 or 1/8th since you will likely be going back up. Does that sound right to you Stitch? Would a 16th note on a lower (towards high E) string be an upstroke or a downstroke for you if the next note was also towards high E. You'd essentially sweep the first two notes, right? And the third 16th note would either be up or down depending on where the next note was? It's a tricky two dimensional equation!
