Thanks for shedding some light on why that jam section is so much damn fun to solo over. Just pulls ya right up the neck. So much joy and longing come out of the speakers.. almost like you can't help it.
How many thumbs up can I give this? Awesome lesson!!! Crazy as it sounds, I never thought of this as A,G,D being in one key and E in another. I think I thought it was 50% in one key and 50% in another. I loved the bonus about the Trey licks. Can't wait to play around with this. Thanks Stitch!!
Stich! Even your old videos are awesome! I've watched your stuff for years and came back to this one as it's really helped sharpen my guitar skills. Thanks for all the content. PS It's funny seeing you with short hair again in the video. Cheers!
Man! I have been frantically watching your videos. The Trey stuff is so far beyond anything else out there. Ridiculously helpful. It's awesome to have someone sharing this kind of knowledge in such a down to earth and playable way. Can't wait for some Gamehendge stuff....or a walkthrough of the palindrome section in Divided Sky! ;) Thanks.
You are my hero. I'm about to devour all of this series. So stoked I learned this song by ear and I'm thrilled to see that I learned it more or less correctly. My ears work! Thanks so much for making these.
@Jeffrey Eliot Jerry would want nothing to do with people who add nothing to the conversation except their own unnecessary and hatefully worded opinions. And hey, even if Jerry didn't like Trey (as if it would even matter), Phil Lesh seems to like him well enough.
Brooooo hellz bellz I haven’t watched this yet but it popped up on my feed because I listen to the Slave from Hartford 97 maybe I forget, just type that into RU-vid, it’s the best solo in my op for Slave. I’m not sure if I will watch because I’ve been playing along with this Solo for so so many years and keep finding new pockets but...... you sound dope.
Sir Stitch - Trey is obviously a "Mel Bay" baby. When you discuss what scale position fits "Slave," you lead off with your pinky in the "C" (and "D") position of the "CAGED system." I have four concert videos of Phish. Trey almost ALWAYS "leads" with his pinky when choosing a scale pattern. It is OBVIOUS to me he was trained in a traditional, Mel Bay manner/technique. (As I was.) It is shocking to me the number of players I have come into contact with who could continue away if you chopped off their dammed pinky! ESPECIALLY on chords. Take "Ya Mar." The first A chord is a (open) "C" shape. barred at the 9th fret. I play this and other 3 decade long axe-slingers look at me like I just reinvented the wheel! The thing I have loved about Trey's playing - ever since I was turned onto him in college - is the fact he "osmosized" the basics and never forgot them! He keeps reminding me of things I have forgotten or let fall into disuse. Like the diminished 7th arpeggio in "Stash." This is why I find him endlessly entertaining to listen to. And you sir? Endlessly entertaining to watch you calling "suck!" on yourself. lol!! Andy needs to donate.
I only watched a bit of this and it might have come up.. but if you go up the E major... well.. its more of a E Mixolidian thing... it wants to function as the five chord pulling back to the A major. So if anyone is hitting clangers out there think about playing E mix. (all the notes in A major) or just playing the D natural instead of the D# on the E in this tune. Sorry if this was discussed later in video! But I know that would be the kind of thing to really mess me up back when I was younger.
Hi, thanks for the video. When changing scales with the chords are you playing a full A scale which then adds a G# that is not in the D scale or are you playing A mixolydian? Also, when playing the G are you playing a lydian mode/scale so that the C is sharp? Thank you very much.
Cool connection between Phish 1.0 and Phish 3.0, the song "More" also has the same chords A,E,G,D in the jam section. Do you think this is yet another A,G,D in one Key and E in another? I'm not sure. My ears tell me it might be A/E and then G/D so two separate keys. What do you think?
I love your videos man great job! Any chance you could explore the jam in Limb by Limb. F mixolydian right? I would like to learn different positions and shapes on the neck for this.
Awesome videos man. So for the first 3 chords, would that mean that the key is technically A mixolydian? I know it's technically technically D, but would A mixolydian also be a viable name for it?
Some good stuff in here, but shouldn't we be viewing this as A mixolydian instead of D major? I know it's the same notes technically but the root is definitely A
well as the chords go by underneath if you are playing all the notes in D major like Stitch is saying over the first three chords technically you are playing A mixolidian to G Lydian to D ionian and then you change keys to E mix....
I was so stoned I honestly thought you were going to make a video about how phish has shitty solos because of "Traffic Light Guitar Soloing Concepts" and they are a slave to those concepts
and when you were soloing, I was wondering, "is it because his bar finger looks like a traffic light, or is it because the solo will stop, slow, and go like a traffic light?"
