Band I hate: ? Overrated: Radiohead Underrated: Nektar Band I love: Van der Graaf Generator Can listen to over and over: Gentle Giant (Can replace VDGG and GG) Got me into music: Pink Floyd Changed my life: Genesis (Peter Gabriel era) Surprised me: King Crimson, only had listened to ITCOTCK, and Starless but apparently they have way too many different and awesome stuff. Guilty pleasure: Don't think there is any, even tried listening to KPOP on the off chance that I may like them. Live: Never seen any bands live. I live in Nepal and was born in 2000. Guess I am a bit new to music listening.
@@nectarinedreams7208 thank you very much, I personally love Punk Music, yet it’s bands that progressed past the three chord shtick into what would later the “Post-Punk” movement. Wire was one of those bands that sounded radically different by the time the album “The Ideal Copy” was released. Their second album “Chairs Missing” and “154” was the band’s natural progression from edgy Punk to Avant/Psychedelic Pop-Punk.
Like any form of music genre, you can’t just single out the entire genre as schlock when there are so many great bands that are waiting for one’s ears and open mind to attend to. Wire is among so many of the band’s from the original British Punk scene outside of The Sex Pistols and The Clash that were far more innovative and interesting. The Adverts, Stranglers, The Jam, Buzzcocks, The Damned were all pretty much brilliant bands yet none could find a niche here in the U.S.
@@chuckazeee I also believe all genres have potential for good music, but I have yet to find a punk band I really enjoy. I like some punk adjacent bands like The Limit, Killing Joke and Death (70's band), but that is the closest I have gotten so far. Sex Pistols and The Damned are ok, but not something I put in my CD/record player. I'll keep looking. I'll definitely agree that Wire is an interesting band, but I don't think they are the band I'm looking for. They had an hypnotic quality I can appreciate, but only one of the 10-12 random songs I listened to yesterday (A Question of Degree) did something for me. I might give them another shot, now that I know what to expect.
@@StrappingOldLad it’s a mindset, truth be told as mentioned the Post-Punk scene was far more interesting, while on the American side the Alternative (Post-Punk) bands were just as brilliant. The Ramones after a while became stale due to the lack of inventiveness.
Hate: Poison Overrated: Boston Underrated: Thin Lizzy Love: Lynyrd Skynyrd Over and Over: Jethro Tull Got me into music: Kiss Changed life: Black Sabbath Surprised Me: Blackberry Smoke Guilty pleasure: Adam and the Ants Live: Iron Maiden Missed Seeing: The Wildhearts
Band I hate: Poison (need I say more) and Ed Sheeran (the acceptance of musical mediocrity) Band that’s overrated: Motley Crue Band that’s underrated: Magnum and Saxon (they deserved more) Band I love: Iron Maiden Band I can listen over & over: Pink Floyd (the run from Meddle to The Wall is sublime) and Rush (their entire catalogue). Band that made me fall in love with music: Queen (they sounded and were larger than life) and Def Leppard (they were my gateway into harder rock) Band that changed my life: Pink Floyd (music could be more) Band that surprised me: The Beatles (so young, so brief, so profilic and so bloody good) and Riverside (gateway to looking at bands beyond North America and western Europe) Guilty Pleasure: Tori Amos (few channel uncomfortable intimacy better) and A-Ha. Band I should've seen live: Pink Floyd (with Waters) at LIVE8 Favourite Band to see live: Maiden, AC/DC and Rush (no other bands fill me with more joy).
I too hate Ed Sheeran along with Sam Smith . Nothing wrong with your guilty pleasure A-ha who I’ve seen live and can report they’re very good in concert Foot of the mountain by them is a good album to investigate
I cheered when Chuck Said The Police …they had everything , musicianship, intelligence, songs , never rehearsed ,hated/loved each other ,exciting. And through Sting and his Blue Turtles band I got into Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland and still my favourite drummer Omar Hakim. Which led on to Miles , weather report , Jaco ,Coltrane ,Mingus and Monk. So yeah The Police changed my life thanks for mentioning them Chuck 👍🏻
A single decade makes a big diff. I'm about 10 years older than most/all of the guys...I was already into "Miles, Weather Report, Jaco, Coltrane, Mingus and Monk" years before The Police. MTV, of all things, got me into The Police. GHOST IN THE MACHINE was my 1st album by The Police. A mere 10 years difference. ;-)
It was either Ken or Luis that recommended Discipline a couple months ago. I found their album "Unfold Like Staircase" and absolutely love it. Best surprise or new find for me of the year. Thanks guys.
@@lahloonatic Same goes for me, Luis, you are actually more expressive with the English language than thousands of people here in the USA, and when you highlight a band more than once and as descriptively as you do, I take note and I want to check it out. And sure enough, that Discipline album blew me away, so I appreciate that too.
One of the funniest prog seats ever. Ken and Luis on fire. And for the record not into Kiss or Creedence. Great shout out from Eric for Sherinian. Hope George was OK, because I love his input on these shows.
@@georgelamie7001 I'll always be there for 4FF. Will check out Panzerballett. George, just started listening to is Kick the Cat and impressed thus far. Do you have an opinion of them. Cheers Tony
@@ericporter344 just sent a similar message to George. Have a listen to Kick the Cat. I think you would like them. Loads of guitar and no vocals, double thumbs up. Cheers Tony
@@tonypeake467 Tony, love them, just saw them live about 3 weeks ago, they did a short tour. Check out our SOT series 4Fusion Friday, we had Kick the Cat’s guitarist Chris Siebold on the show. I believe it was the September episode
For Eric: I run an ukulele club at my school. One year in our video contest, a student covered a Ramones song. A couple of days after I posted it, my phone blew up with comments. Turns out CJ Ramone (replaced Dee Dee) saw the video, started promoting it on his websites and ended up winning the student an ukulele. Contacted him and he got in touch with the student (who was really struggling at the time). Awesome guy. Will forever love the Ramones and their fans because of this. CJ is a truly great person.
@@vitus33 We're actually a very popular group on campus. Kids are thrilled to have an intro to playing music outside of a class. Many find a love for performing and move into choir or drama. And when I carry it traveling, everyone wants to talk to me and play them a song! I've met so many people traveling because of the Uke, is great!
Band I hate - Nickelback Band I love - Queen Band I find overrated - Linkin Park (May Chester Bennington RIP, but I never liked their music.) Band I find underrated - John Mayer (He is a great musician and guitarist that never gets the respect he deserves.) Band I can listen to over and over again - Van Halen Got Me Into Music - The Rolling Stones (My older brother is a huge Stones fan and had all the Stones albums, they were the gateway band getting me into rock music.) Changed my life - Prince (He will always be the musician that got me seriously loving all different genres of music. Everything from funk, rock, psychedelia, jazz, soul, r&b, pop, punk, new wave. You name it Prince could play it.) Surprised me - The Smashing Pumpkins Guilty Pleasure - Duran Duran (Never really considered them a guilty pleasure, Duran Duran to me were way more than just a pretty boy pop band. Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Nick Rhodes, Roger Taylor and Andy Taylor were always real musicians that came out in the MTV era. Duran Duran's music was always more post punk, new wave with synth pop. Also Depeche Mode was great too.) Wish I have seen - The Rolling Stones Best live act - Prince (Seen my idol in concert numerous times when he was still living and every time I saw Prince in concert he put on an incredible live show. Little side note, I usually agree with Chuck's picks but I freaking love the Clash. They were the band that got me into punk when I was very young. Great show and I really enjoyed it.
Hands down one of my favorite SOT shows of all time! Today we went to the Church of @LuisNasser! I was waiting for his turn at the pulpit the most! Just like @EricPorter, KISS was my gateway to rock music! The way @KenGolden attacked KISS with his baseball bat had me LMAO!!!! Everyone else did a great job sharing their likes and dislikes! A very therapeutic show for everyone!
@@ericporter344 Thanks Eric for the shout out of Derek Sherinian. Love Planet X. Appreciate your input as always. You have a nice bond with George. Tony from Australia
Any chance you guys ever talk a bit about yourselves? Who are you guys? What do you do in life? How did you get to this channel? Could we have a video without albums? Just talk about you guys? I mean we know a lot about Ken because he is in the business for a long time and he has loads of stories on so many videos. I know Luis is a guitarist. Not sure I know anything else.
great stuff. i would have opted for Foo Fighters as overrated. Surprised nobody said that . Right on with Kiss. Hilarious!! Good stuff guys. Thanks for the laughs.
Well, Pete, it looks like you'll have your chance to see Peter Gabriel next year. He's just announced tour dates for Europe and I think the US dates are soon to follow. As a young fan I'm hoping to see him for the first time. His shows look spectacular. I'm just as excited for his new album, too.
Band I hate: Nickelback Overrated: Foo Fighters Underrated: The Little Willies (Country supergroup with Norah Jones, Richard Julian and Jim Campilongo) Band I love: The Beatles Can listen to over and over: McCartney (he's got 3 or 4 bad albums in his discography, but I love everything else he did, probably the most natural gifted melody writer there is) Got me into music: The Rolling Stones ("Flowers") Changed my life: Miles Davis ("Kind Of Blue" turned me onto jazz) Surprised me: Radiohead (thought I wouldn't like them, but come to find they're awesome especially "OKC" and "In Rainbows") "Guilty pleasure": Backstreet Boys (don't mind them when they come on the radio, I like a good vocal arrangement) Should have seen but have not: Keith Jarrett (saw both Herbie and Chick twice, but never saw Keith, though he's my favourite)
Keith Jarrett= The Bach of our generation. He's in another level. I had a chance to see him but was "too busy" I hope he stays as healthy as he can post stroke.
Eric, you lumped all punk together, but I suggest you listen to either The Damned or The Stranglers and you might like them. try “The Black Album” or Strawberries by The Damned and Rattus Norvegicus” “No more Heroes” by The Stranglers, also, more of a post punk band, but Siouxsie and The Banshees, specifically the albums with guitar player John McGeoch on them like “JuJu”. You are a guitar player and he is the most innovative guitar player from that era. Also the band Wire, all their albums are different and you should explore them. Great band.
Another great show gentlemen, and excellent topic. Everyone from the team brings much to the table, and it often amounts to a learning experience for me since Prog music isn't my forte. That said, it was good to see everyone step out of "character" a little bit and broaden their areas of coverage. I'd like to comment on a few of the responses and offer a few suggestions of my own. First, Ken's rant about KISS was hilarious. Don't hold back, tell us how you really feel! I understand they're an easy target for naysayers, and are one of those bands you get or you don't. I can appreciate both sides for and against. That said, Ken and Luis, you're both knowledgable and share terrific insights but be careful not to get caught up in confirmation bias and cloud your judgment. "Dynasty" is not a disco album, the next was a Power Pop experiment, and the musicianship rose up a notch in the non-make up years. Gripe about them all you want, but they've lasted till now with millions of records sold. Ask a band like GWAR how many albums they've sold in the last decade. Gimmicks carry you just so far. Steven: You were spot-on with Y&T as underrated! One of the best hard rock bands from the late '70s still in existence, though I think it's only Meniketti now. They should have become much bigger. I can still listen to records like "Down for the Count" and marvel at the guitar work and drumming. Awesome band. Eric: I respect your opinion about Punk music, and this may be presumptuous of me, but are you basing your opinion on those sort of "birth of Punk" bands from back in the day? The Ramones, Pistols, Clash, etc. carved out a stylistic niche in their time, but Punk's evolved over time and I'd like to call your attention to several bands that embody Punk, or maybe more fittingly, a metal-punk hybrid, that feature excellent songwriting and musicianship that I think might inspire you to take a closer look: Rise Against, Strung Out, Thursday, Propaghandi, and AFI (more Gothic, mainstream), great band for over two decades. I highly recommend you, and Pete for that matter, check them out and see if they don't change your mind. Chuck: I'd be interested to hear your thoughts about the aforementioned, and any others you'd suggest. I'm reeling these off at a moment's notice, and there are many more I'm missing. Guilty pleasures: Great concept, not to be taken literally right? How about Benny Mardones, apparent one-hit wonder of "Into the Night" fame back in 1980. That man could sing! Anything by The Knack, so much more than "My Sharona," and a very talented, musically tight band. Great stuff, keep up the good work!
Band that changed my life: Rush. I learned from them to be true to yourself, even when the world around you disagrees. The individual has to go up against society's rules and conceptions just like the man in the star logo. Everybody's got to deviate from the norm. When you're 12 years old, that's some chicken soup for the soul right there. (And their music's not too shabby either!)
Kudos to Mr. Golden for mentioning two of my non-prog favorites: Squeeze and Joe Jackson! I’ve seen Squeeze in concert about 10 or 12 times and Mr. Jackson, the Jackanape from Jackaloop Junction, (sadly) only once. Squeeze always put on a great, lively show and it’s quite fun watching the ladies dance. I was at that Philadelphia Marillion show that Chad attended. My friend and l followed them from NYC to Philly to Washington, D.C. on that East Coast, USA swing of shows in 1992. Bonus points to The Chadster for mentioning The Fixx as well. Their debut album is a real corker, especially the deep tracks! Major props to Chuck for bringing up Beastie Boys and Depeche Mode. I really dig the Violator CD and saw DM live, outdoors, at a giant football stadium in New Jersey on that tour in 1990 or 1991. Excellent show. Yes! Luis brought up Tori Amos, big fan over here! Especially her Atlantic and Epic Records releases. Cheers from Noo Yawk, ova heyah! ~8^ )
Shirley Horn is about as far from a guilty pleasure as you can get. EDIT: Yay for Fishbone! Interesting factoid: In that iconic scene in Say Anything where John Cusack is holding the boombox over his head blasting "In Your Eyes" to Ione Skye's bedroom window, the song he was actually playing while filming was Fishbone's "Bonin' in the Boneyard."

Fantastic episode .So enjoyed Ken , Steven , Louis and Eric combating ! Suggest you repeat same program and limit responses to prog bands only . I can't imagine the diversity there !
One of the best episodes of In The Prog Seat ever. I absolutely loved this. It was so interesting listening to all the guys share stuff that we never get to hear about on the weekly podcast. I think we all received some personal insight into our favourite band of brothers through this little exercise, thanks Pete. Ken was hilarious and entertaining as ever, he's always worth the admission price. With regard to Luis's view on U2 - a lot of Irishmen (this one included) would fully concur. The only negative is the absence of Anthony. I'm sure he and Luis would have provided some entertaining banter about Jon Anderson and there would have been a high Jobson count..

My vote for underrated is the prog metal band Wilderun. Their album Veil of Imagination is masterful and totally epic. The obvious comparison is Opeth, but their I find their command of symphonic composition and overall song arrangement to be very unique. Listen to these guys!
Agree totally with Eric about Blackberry smoke, I have been a fan for over 10 years seen them every time they've been to the UK ,always a great show, set list changes every night also Charlie and the guys are always a pleasure to talk to. More people need to check this band out.
Can´t you guys do a whole show about bands you hate? Each one picks five, not for the sake of being negative, just for the fun of it! These rants are great😃Specially when there´s disagreement haha. Cheers!
Great show gentlemen. The stories made me laugh and cry! Chad's story about his buddy buying the tickets, driving to the gig and paying for dinner; that's a true friend. May I suggest you do a show on PUNK. Because of the time I grow up in 1970's-80's and the music press I read there was always a strict dichotomy between the serious Prog and Punk fans. It would be great to hear your opinions one day. Oh and just for laughs watching this with close caption/ subtitles is Hilarious!🤣🙃
As far as I know Pete is not really into punk but he likes some proto punk like MC5 and The Stooges, maybe also the New York Dolls. Not sure about the rest of the prog seat members.
I’m with Pete, Eric, and Steven - Kiss is the band that made me fall in love with music. Like Pete, Kiss Destroyer was the first album (actually 8-track) that I bought with my own money. I didn’t care much for 80s Kiss because I had moved on to heavier bands and prog, but those 70s years were great. I still enjoy listening to those albums. No apologies to the haters😝

Ken's comments on KISS were truly golden. This was a classic the emperor has no clothes argument. This was the best rant in the history of the Sea of Tranquility. I like the way all the KISS supporters were turned into 10 year olds. This was a truly classic rant.
YES, THANK YOU SCIENTIST. Nice one George, my biggest problem is the singer's voice sometimes, but then again I'm a massive Dream Theater fan. And unlike Labrie, Salvatore at least sings in tune and can belt without making me cringe
Well I'm 62 years old, so I'll answer the live band question. I've seen in the 70s zeppelin, maiden, priest, ufo, purple, Coverdale, sabbath, rush every UK punk band...... But the 1 band from 1975 to 1983 that was just the best live were.... Queen by a mile, even the not so heavy numbers were a total different tune live!
I absolutely loved the anti-KISS rant from Ken. After I watched it I wore a KISS 1977 tour shirt to work. This stuff is supposed to be fun. Don't take it personally, folks. Also enjoying the ongoing picks and commentary from Chuck and Luis regarding the, shall we say, narrow view of some prog fans. Well done, gentlemen.
The only thing funnier than knowing that Ken has probably spent every day for the last seven yrs kvetching about Orange Man is that Kiss has caused him just as much grief for nearly 50.
As a form of penance for the sin of blasphemy against The Lizard King I hereby request a UK Connection episode where Steven ranks the songs on The Doors' debut album.
@@tonypeake467 No, not particularly Tony. I don't dislike them but I'm not into them. Ginger Baker was a monster behind the kit though and I love his playing on pretty much anything he touched.
Queen changed my life...they tried everything, with varying success, but they tried. and they could be proggy and heavy as hell.........great show gentlemen
At least we’ll know the reason why if Ken & Chuck aren’t in future episodes 🤣🤣🤣 I love CCR & was introduced to their music thanks to quite a few movies in the 80s, one of them being Twilight Zone The Movie. I prefer Kiss Alive albums to their studio albums, as the songs have more punch. As for merchandise, aren’t all bands doing that now, from toys, alcohol, comics, puzzles etc? Kiss were basically ahead of the game. We got to remember a lot of the bands back then were either paid peanuts or wasn’t getting paid at all even when they wrote their own songs due to dodgy contracts. Kiss were using their brains.
Such an upping the ante moment for me. First Stephen makes a big thumbs up at George for putting down probably my most-listened to band of all time, then the wonderful Ken Golden totally bashes Kiss while Stephen is wearing a Kiss t-shirt. Big thumbs up! to that Stephen! I also liked Kiss (but at 9 years old) One of the best moments in SoT-history, for sure. And then Ken praises Sade! Big thumbs up to that Stephen!
@@TranquilityFireReid It's a fact that the biggest bands like Kiss, U2, GNR, RHCP and back in the day R.E.M. are bands that many people on the whole get so frustrated by because of their popularity, which have made them difficult to avoid. I have a theory with music that we don't just listen to music, but also listen to the personalities/souls of people. For instance, when Chuck despises RHCP or Ken despises Kiss I believe it's also because they dont connect with the minds/souls of those people whose fingerprints are all in the music. For instance Anthony Kiedis fingerprints are all over RHCP's music, and are reflected in the music which George doesn't connect with, not only in the melodies but also more elusively in the band's interplay with his personality and musical predilections. Especially the more we get to know about a band the more we get to know about the band members personalites presence in the music (through visual content and interviews), and therefore don't just pay attention to the music but also to the personalities in those bands. With my absolute favourite bands I love them as people, which include their values and political inclination, their inclination when it comes to their art. Naturally other people are gonna dislike these bands for the same reasons.
@@johansoderberg6546 I loathe and maybe even abhor Gene Simmons and his views and opinions, but I love KISS and their music. I completely separate the two. As for bands I don't like, such as U2 or REM, I don't think I've ever read an interview with either. It's the music I don't connect with not the individuals, because I don't know them. As for the interplay between band members, well I'd presume it's almost impossible for that not to come through in the band's music.
@@TranquilityFireReid I am not saying you should read up on R.E.M, but should you in fact do that, I am quite sure you´d like em more than you do now, especially if you listened to Buck's and Berry's interviews from early to mid 80's. In their music there is no metal whatsoever, just IMO great ambience, smart musical choices and great singing. But all of them dislike if not hate metal, so that probably explains why the most notorius metal heads in the panel made a big thumbs up when George mentioned them on ITPS.
@@johansoderberg6546 Hey Johan, no, reading about REM wouldn't make me enjoy music that I genuinely don't like. My brother had their early albums and I've heard later albums and I like pretty much none of it. Sometimes we connect with things and sometimes we don't. There's enough music out there for us all to enjoy in our own ways. I LOVED Ken's comments about KISS and can completely understand them - it made for fun discussion. Won't stop me enjoying them and neither it should, just as me not liking REM, or Sade for that matter, should diminish anyone else's enjoyment in any way.
My guilty pleasure is Kingdom Come. A German 80's band that got dumped for sounding as good as Led Zeppelin. I'll put their best up against any of your ... Savatage , Angel , Accept , Loudness , but below Whitesnake and Sanctuary( 1st album only). This is clean guitar tone and vocals . You guys failed to miss this one time .
Can't agree more with George about REM. Can't agree more with Ken about Kiss. Can't disagree more with Chad about CCR. Can't agree more with Pete about Wishbone Ash.
Hey Chuck, I one of my very favorite shows I’ve seen of all time, was in UC Santa Barbara, was Oingo Boingo, XTC and the Police (3rd album)! Eric and Steven, I went through a Kid crush on Kiss as most gouging, but once they release a song with the lyric, “put your hand in my pocket, and grab on to my Rocket!”, and it was over! Great show guys!
I enjoyed Ken's hatred for Kiss although Ken forget that Kiss was a simple band made for young people (10-15 years old). Which funny enough was about the same age of the girls they picked-up after each live show.
