After volunteering for the Marine Corps to avoid jail, Jerry Tillinghast found himself as a part of the United States military's "search-and-destroy" campaign in the beginning of the Vietnam War.
He would soon be introduced to the shotgun, which later, would prove to be an important part of his life with the New England mob.

@funkfreeze 3 года назад
When I was about 9-10 I remember asking my grandfather if he was scared or had killed anyone in WW2 (as a kid would bluntly ask that stuff). He said everyone was scared, and he shot at a lot of people, but he could 'never quite see what happened to them'. He survived the war from first to last and was in Dunkirk and North Africa. He used to be dressed as a Bedouin in Africa and go into the German held villages at night to scout positions. He was in the thick of it. Screamed all the time in his sleep and pedalled his feet, even as an old man. He told me why his feet moved in his sleep... He and his best friend were tasked to clear a beach of landmines and they flipped a coin for which side of the beach they'd get. As they were at other ends of the beach he heard the explosion as his friend tripped a mine and was killed. My grandfather told me he couldn't never get to him quick enough, so in the dream, over the years, a bike always appeared. I can't imagine the things he couldn't bring himself to tell me. He for sure never talked about Dunkirk.

Filing a sear might make a semi auto fire double or sometimes more but when the sear is filed in this manner the jarring of the gun caused by the bolt closing is causing the hammer to slip from the sear. The hammer will disengage from the sear so easily that the hammer will more often then not, disengage too early and follow the bolt and it wont strike the firing pin hard enough to fire the weapon. So you turn your weapon into a single shot that ocassionally will double or triple then click. Semi autos that have had trigger work done by filing the sear may experience firing in bursts. But it always ends with a misfire. No one would intentionally do this because your gun is a billionth of an inch of wear away from not working at all. If the sear wont hold the hammer the gun wont stay cocked and the gun wont fire when it's not cocked. On a semi auto that fires from an open bolt, seat that's filed to the point that its firing multiple shots, it will start firing uncontrollably until the magazine or belt is empty. Most open bolt firearms are already full auto so there's no point in filing those sears anyway. Turning a rifle or shotgun sideways wont make it kick sideways. It makes it where you cant hit anything intentionally. "Yeah when I was in Nam we used to tie rubber bands around the trigger then flip it off safe and throw the rifle in the air and it would spray 360 degrees. We had a log ride in da nang too." This dude's a lying dipshit that doesnt have a clue about what he's talking about.

After a few minutes inside a DOD cop came after us and was giving me a ration of shit. When I explained that I was a retiree and I was showing my elderly mother around the base, he calmed down and told us to be careful and drove away. It was pretty run down and disgusting inside. He is telling you the truth about the shotgun and filing the sear down. No it will not fire on automatic, but if you fire it and hold the trigger down and pump the slide it will fire when you push it forward. The recoil of the shotgun will help push the slide to the rear. There are only two shotguns that will do that in stock configuration. One is the Ithaca model 37 feather lite, and the other is the 1899 Winchester pump with exposed hammer. I have an Ithaca 37 feather lite chambered in 20 guage. I can fire it faster this way than any semi auto shotgun. Put lots of 20 dollar bills in my wallet at the range with bets on it. In my platoon in Vietnam, we had 2 Remington pump guns tricked out just the way he says. Me, I carried an m 14, and yes, I walked point with it. We had the real early model m16’ s and they were junk, jamming pos. I wouldn’t give you 50 bucks for a truck load of them.

The Winchester model 1897 (97) , Winchester 1912 ( 12) , Stephens 320 & 520, Ithaca 37 can all be slammed fire. Probably more as well but these are ones I have and I know they can Also the old Winchester exposed hammer pump .22 They do this because they don’t have a trigger disconnect , if you hold the trigger back and pump it as soon as the bolt goes into battery and locks up it will fire. Nothing to file and if you try to modify a gun that has a trigger disconnect you might run the risk of it firing before the bolt locks up. The recoil does not push the slide back, actually to unlock the bolt the slide has to be pushed slightly forward this is usually done subconsciously by using the guns recoil. I guess you can fire a slam fire shotgun slightly faster then a non slam fire especially if you are an inexperienced shooter but in the real world I don’t see that much of the advantage You can waste .22s pretty quick in those old Winchester pumps, I can attest to that!

Deadhorse1, you’re probably right about there being more of them that will slam fire. Also probably right about the usefulness of it, but it sure was fun taking money from the guys with the automatics. I’m not really sure about what our armorer did to the Remington 870’s we had, just that they worked in a slam fire mode and that he did modify them. Don’t know how he had time to do anything but try to keep the pos m16’s we had in some kind of order. I’m left handed so I convinced my Lt that the safety on the 16 was too difficult for me to reach, so the m14 with the safety in the trigger guard worked for me. Peace

I have a Beretta pump that I bought while in the USN on board my ship,JFK CVA 67,back in '72. One morning I was crossing the forward mess deck when I seen a table laid out with firearms and attended by a gunner's mate.Curious about it I went up to see what was going on.He stated that these were guns that were ordered from ships crew but not paid for and they were for sell and would be stored in the armory til we returned to Norfolk.I picked up the Beretta shotgun and it seemed to shoulder well.I don't like shiny finish on the stock which this has and it was 12 gauge full choke,30 inch barrel.I paid $60.It slam fires and caused me a few problems while hunting with it as it unlocks on firing and if you are putting pressure on the slide stock your reaction of going forward from the recoil can relock it on the fired shell. I took it out to hunt rabbits on returning to the states and put up a sheet of butcher paper to pattern it with a 30 inch circle at 10 yrds. Most production shotguns need to be patterned to adjust the stock to hit but this Beretta was and still is dead center to point of aim.In the hunts I have taken it out on I always got what I hunted for.Grouse,quail,dove, geese,ducks.I forgot my deer shotgun,a Mossburg 500 on a deer hunt once and I only had the Beretta besides my deer rifles and needed a shotgun to hunt a box canyon with 3 ft of snow in heavy timber.Rifle could have worked if you don''t mind blowing the deer in half at close range but you'd likely only kill a few trees. I killed a 220# 3x3 mule deer buck at 47 yrds with the same buckshot I usually used in the 500. Out of 9 pellets of 00 buck 3 pellets hit that buck and 1 clipped an antler.The 1 thru the neck ko'ed him into a somersault,1 in the chest and another one high on the shoulder.I was surprised that a full choke shotgun could put them that close at that range,too.I always aim for the head and it works if the deer isn't moving fast.If he's running you swing from his butt to pass his head before firing just like shooting birds.From the number of responses to this guys claiming to modified his shotgun I'm thinking bs. I think that sending pump shotguns to 'Nam was a mistake.The best shotgun for that type of action would have been the Remington 11 with an extented magazine. I have one and can put out a hail of lead like I wish I could with the pumps.Limited to 3 for hunting but doubles and triples on ducks and geese which isn't always possible with a pump.

I just wish that so many of them didn't have something so incredibly unbelievable or ridiculous in them that it made the whole thing questionable. It takes so little exaggeration, embellishment, or complete BS to discredit a story completely even if the other 99% was absolute truth. I suppose combat accounts and wartime escapades are best judged by others who were there. But I doubt yarn spinners try to knowingly BS their fellow veterans. It would be a waste of time. And not to mention how turning a semi auto shotgun with a limited magazine capacity into a full auto usually empty shotgun is just asking to get smoked. And point shooting a shotgun horizontally "gangsta" style is a pretty good way to make sure your pattern is usually somewhere besides where it needs to be. I heard him specifically state it turned it from a semi to a full auto, which would be accurate. Where did you guys hear him identify the shotgun as a pump gun? I went back and listened to it again....didn’t get pump out of it anywhere... some of the video footage showed a dude with a pump gun, but I never took that footage to be him, that guy looked black to me..... just stock troop footage for background for his story..

Ring a bell? Not that would give away their location. That bell ringing would sure help facilitate a ambush by the VC. File the shear on what type of weapon? Not on the m16 or the m 14, they have a selective fire switch Jerry. A pump shotgun cannot be made to fire full auto. if it was a semi automatic shotgun, it would climb all over creation without much to show for the effort. M1 carbines were easily converted to selective fire, so that one is off the table.
@AdamBorseti

It's called slide-firing. When you pull the trigger on your shotgun and slide the pump back while still holding the trigger, it'll go off. People getting all bunged up over the dude mixing up his terminology, but instead of listening to him, they just assume the entire story is a lie. Typical.

Of course, it's not a good thing, but it's clear to me that you don't understand his position be side you've never walked a mile in his shoes. It's real REAL easy to judge someone when you've never had to see things from their point of view. Prior to 1978 some not all shotguns that were pump could be fired with the trigger down and would fire when pumped. Ithaca 12 and gauge shotguns could do this. After 1978 they work as a single shot and the trigger has to be released to reset the trigger to fire.

They use to especially if there’s a war going on and they need bodies. That doesn’t mean they’re gonna offer someone with a significant crime the chance to join the marines to get out of prison time but minor stuff for sure. The United States isn’t the only country that does it either, I actually met a dude in the French foreign legion who got off a murder charge by joining the legion. Not sure what the surprise is honestly.

My uncle has a similar story with the Navy to avoid jail time he served he actually liked it a and re enlisted. My close friend had the same with the Army he joined to avoid a jail sentence and ended up staying for the next 25yrs and made the rank of Sargeant Major. Both have honorable discharge on there records instead of felonies this system really helped a lot of young men turn there lives around and give them the chance to live productive lives it's a shame it's not in use the way it was in the past.
