I love the detail in this...when Azula was a kid she didn’t have the same yellow eyes she has while talking to her mother, yet a hint of her “monstrous” eyes is shown when using blue fire. It kinda represents how Azula turned into the monster her mother feared her to be and it awakened when she left.

Yeah, and we also know that the blue fire is the "purest" form of fire (normal fire has excess fuel creating an incomplete combustion and red, orange, yellowish flames) and Azula, being the perfectionist she is, would obviously want to perform that "pure" form of firebending.

Someone once argued that Azula’s mother is completely innocent in Azula’s downfall. I do not think Ursa is completely guilty, and she truly did love Azula just as much with Zuko, but Ursa failed as a mother when she spent more time with Zuko. Ursa meant the best spending more time with Zuko, Zuko was unaccepted by his father at a young age and Ursa tried to fill that void by spending more time with him. It caused Azula to believe Ursa loved Zuko more, and Azula convinced herself her mother thought she was a monster. Azula isn’t completely heartless either..after years of being under Ozai’s control she still felt remorse after offending Ty Lee and is still hurt by what she thought of her mother. Ursa failed to see that in Azula at a young age and help Azula grow on that. Azula would be so much more different if Ursa displayed so much more affection on Azula.

True. It's not all Azula's fault but I hate it when people blame everything on Ursa too. They all had their issues and Ursa had them too. @@lydiawalton4822 I think I broadly agree with your point that Ursa did care for Azula, and was likely subconsciously scared of Azula because of how she took to Ozai. But I find it hard to accept the idea that Ursa didn't have a reservoir of disdain for Azula specifically -- "what's wrong with that girl?" within earshot of Azula. Ursa may have told herself she cared for Azula, but I think the last thing she tells Azula in the Search comics says it best.

Honestly Azula’s mother could have done better. Honestly, she was too blind to see that she was mentally abusing Azula. She didn’t try to understand her. Azula was always told she was the best, she was manipulated by her father. He made her hungry for power, obsessed. She was obsessed. She just wanted someone to love her. But people either thought she was a monster, or convinced her she was superior. They forgot that she was a human. They forgot that they were the reason she went insane. Edit: I made good points but reflecting I’m def wrong. Ursa played an unintentional role in it, and she really did love Azula. She just saw Zuko’s pain more than she saw Azula’s
@KatiannaDenemark

I agree Ursa could have realized the metal toll Ozai was having on their daughter and given them both her love instead of thinking Zuko was the only one who needed it, but Ursa herself was in an abusive and manipulative relationship with her husband. He wouldn't even let her write letters to her family and had staff confiscate them when she tried, not to mention the marriage was forced on her and he had her believe he killed her true love. It's hard to notice subtle abuse to others when you are trying to survive your own.

I believe that Ursa didn't understand Azula as a person and so assumed her to be a strong, confident and independent child who didn't care bout others opinion or validation (Which she was in most parts) and therefore didn't need as much attention as Zuko. But what Ursa didn't get was that although Azula can be all that, she was still, in the end, a young girl who was very sensitive to others opinions and did crave positive attention/love/validation. Ursa probably believed that Azula didn't need her as much as Zuko so inevitably left her to spend more time Ozai (Which was a mistake), thus causing her to somewhat neglect Azula during her childhood.

I don't think anyone's commented about this but I love how when Ursa says "no harm was intended" you see Azula smile, just for a moment, like this was what she wanted to hear all this time. Only for Ursa to follow it by mentioning Zuko, you can see her eyes shifting away, and the moment is destroyed. This was a great animation one of my favorites!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Azula is such a tragic character I hate when people just write her off as a villain or a monster she is so much more then that. Both Zuko and Azula were abused as children but Zuko always had his mother and Iroh teaching him how to be kind and good whilst Azula only ever had ozai that gave her the "love" she was desperate for he gave her the attention she wanted so she tried to be so much better so she could be on her fathers good side whilst he moulded her into his perfect weapon. Azula dosent know anything other then war and combat she is a 14 year old child who never experienced real love from anyone I think the only time someone ever told her they loved her was the hallucination of her mother. Her breakdown was just heartbreaking to watch I really felt sorry for her. Her whole life she was treated as a weapon and her father feeding her his ideologies without anyone actually helping her see the goodness in life children are not evil they are raised to be evil and that's what happened with Azula. I still feel robbed Azula was meant to have a redemption arc in season 4 the creators said she had further yet to fall but when she hit rock bottom Zuko would be there to help build her up and use his teachings from Iroh to actually help her and let her become her own original person instead of a weapon she deserved so much more then what was given to her she really dosent deserve the hate she gets because she is a child a child that was moulded and manipulated to become a weapon for war she never had her mothers love and care and she never had an Iroh teaching her how to become a better person she was on her own with Ozai and her friends cant be seen as a positive impact for her since they always followed her lead and never attempted to make her better they indulged her in her actions till they left her like everyone in her life has.

@thatweirdone122 3 года назад
I mean I get were you're coming from. And I agree that Azula isnt all evil but she was concious of her actions. But in my opinion I think she would've still turned out the same if she had her mothers love. I feel like she would also hold that over Zukos head in a taunting manner. Zuko wanted his fathers love and he wasn't good at fire bending. She on the other hand was a prodigy and her grandfather was proud of her and so was the nasty man that she calls a father. If she had an uncle Iroh in her life I would doubt it, for me it seems that she didn't really want to talk with him much after she rejected his gift when he was still in his prime and was a general. Ursa was flawed and I did feel bad for Azula when she did wanted to get her moms attention but Azula at a young age was somewhat manipulating Ursa to believe that she would behave and Ursa would believe that she is getting better and that she is getting along with Zuko.Azula has constantly put people in danger many times, her dad doesn't care obviously because he is a bitch. Azula could've realized this when she saw how Aang treated his friends and how Iroh treated Zuko. Its obviously different from what she was taught. She is 16, which is almost an adult. She should realize for herself that her situation is fucked up but she didn't. Ever since she was a child she always tormented Zuko and made fun of someone dying which her mom did not take kindly too. This makes me feel like she was more like her father in more was than one without being brainwashed. She sees what her father does and its kid logic "If dad does this then it's ok". To be honest I don't know if somethings are jumbly and misspelled and I'm sorry if they are. When I watched Azula throughout, I barely had any sympathy when bad things happen to her nor did I have empathy. Again I'm sorry if I'm jumbled I just thought I would throw my opinion into the ring.

I felt like Azula acted like she didn't care about Uncle iroh because she thought uncle iroh didn't care about her. For example, uncle iroh came back from The Invasion of ba sing se he gave Zuko a one-of-a-kind dagger that had meaning to it, but she gave Azula a doll. Uncle iroh gave Zuko something that he would have cared about and he got Azula something she had no interest in, and she was a smart child so she could put two and two together. Cuz if I was Azula at that moment I always feel unloved an unappreciated because this person that I thought would care about me give me something common and plain while he got something for one of my siblings that cost more, looks more expensive in one of a kind. I would feel like I'm not special especially in a condition that Azula is in right now in that moment of time that her mother wasn't giving her enough love and she felt like her mother didn't like her felt like her mother found her as a monster like everybody else. Mic drop Okay time to get off my soapbox
@thatweirdone122
@thatweirdone122 3 года назад
@@pancakesweets721 @@pancakesweets721 Tbh I overlooked that because I thought those were the common things you would give to a girl. Like for example like give the boy a small dagger to train and fight with while giving the girl something tame like a doll she could play with. I didn't really think about it like that though. All I took from it giving Azula a doll thats popular with the girls in ba sing sae so he just put two and two together and think that Azula would like it. If I were Azula there I would be more pissed off and would think that Uncle Iroh thinks I couldnt handle myself because he gave Zuko a weapon and me a toy. But thats if I was in Azulas shoes. And I think she destroyed the doll afterwords? But it's true that Azula was always the smarter child but thats why I think she always got away with more things. Especially since she demonstrated how powerful she can be while Zuko is less than or just average at best. But at the same time I would sorta have to disagree with you there, because Azula was always special, the wench of a father even acknowledged it. Plus she also could've asked Uncle Iroh to train ger or train with her but she never did but I can pass that as her having too much pride. Azula always won her fathers attention more than Zuko and the demon himself always praised her more than Zuko. Zukos mother knew how Ozai was like ajd I think she thought because Azula was excelling so much that she didnt really need that much protection from the ogre's bad side. But yet again the mother shouldnt have took no chances. But the thing is she was acting ruthless which her mother through discipline tried to correct Azula, but if you're only getting in trouble most of the time to gain your parents affection, you're gonna do whatever it takes. But tgis gives Azula no right to disrespect the dead, nor Zuko, nor her other friends. And it doesnt give her the right to kill anybody. But like back to Uncle Iroh, he also stated he thought it was something Azula would have liked, but he couldve gave her the doll, because he heard through letters what Azula has been up to and maybe thought a doll would make her more tame. Tbh Young Azula I can forgive and maybe sympathize because no matter how smart a kid is, its still a kid, but her at 16 she has to know that her father is fucked up and she could've easily lied to him to leave the fire nation, that girl is a manipulator and just fakes shit. Minus her anger for Mai and Ty lee betraying her. fuck I mightve rambled a bit and jumped from many places, please tell me when some things dont make sense in my wording.

She always deserved so much better. From the start, she was never loved by the nation (showed by this animatic) they were focused on the next king. Not there sister. She she never got respect from the start. Then when she was found out to be a prodigy, she was mentally abused. She was taught to be a perfectionist. Never fail, no mistakes, and if so, your a disappointment. Put that on top of her mother always picking Zuko? That really put her under a lot of pressure to be a perfectionist and trying to grab her mothers attention, lead to her hurting others and being violent. She was basically taught that being abusive that was love, seeing that her parent were still together and her dad abused their mom basically. When she grew up, and zuko became a traitor, that put a lot more pressure on her to be the next heir to the throne. Again, she was forced to be a perfectionist so she wouldn’t be a disappointment. That more then DOUBLED when she was queen for a bit. Then she had to have a Agni Kai with her brother. I think they would have been good brother and sister to each other if not for there parents (and yes i am talking about BOTH of the parents here). Her dignity was then taking away by losing. And when she lost, she lost EVERYTHING. Her one biggest fear came true. Her being a disappointment. Her fathers love, all the love and respect, her dignity, her even remotely loving herself? She thought that was all gone, And most of it was! And even in the comics when team avatar and azula went to find her mother and they found her, she still picked zuko. The one thing she had to hold onto was gone. He life was so sad in my opinion.

"Anything you'd ask he will give" I think Ursa thought that since he gave Azula all the materialistic things, she was loved. I think Ursa failed to understand that the favorite of an abusive parent isn't always safe from his wrath. And she assumed that since she was given everything she wanted, except unconditional love, Azula didn't need her. Which is like, should you even be a mother if you can't understand that a child needs to be provided both materially and emotionally?

Azula really isn’t such a monster. She’s such a complex and hurt human being. Taught from an early age to be perfect and superior and to be power hungry and obsessed. Her father is the monster that played the biggest role in turning Azula into a monster. There were actually some episodes where Azula showed real actual human emotion (aside from the last episode). It might have been subtle but it still played a significant difference. Maybe if Ursa showed more affection to Azula she would have become someone different. Maybe if it wasn’t ingrained into her head that she had to be the ‘prefect powerful girl’ she would have become someone different. Azula’s emotions and past and hurt and anger are so complex and hidden and that’s what makes her such a sympathetic character yet still looked at like the villain. I feel so bad for Azula. She didn’t need to be treated like that as a child. All Azula needed was for someone to treat her like an actual human being, like she didn’t need to be prefect and controlling, like she didn’t need to compete and be the best to receive love and attention. She needs the biggest hug and a new life with zero memories of the past. Deep underneath her ‘perfect’ mask, is a terribly hurt and abused little girl. She turned into a monster only as a last resort to get ‘rid’ of her pain.

Can you imagine what it had been like for Azula as a child? She knew what kind of person her father was, knew what he expected of her and because she couldn't get the love she wanted from her mother, she sought from her father. She played to his expectations because she needed someone, anyone to love her even if that love came with conditions. She knew her father only favored her because she was useful but she didn't care. Her mother and brother lived in a little bubble that she couldn't get in. It explains why she grew up so cold and twisted. She was raised by a psychopath because the only good people in her life abandoned her. The only time we ever see Azula interacting with her mom, it's her mom yelling or berating her. The praise she got from her father was the only positive affection she ever received. That is why it still bothers me to this day that Azula never got a chance to properly grow into a better person. Zuko got the crown, their uncle, his mom back, even the little sister he always wanted. Azula always had nothing.

I can’t get enough of this! I’m playing it over and over again. I love the animation, the singing is amazing, and so are the effects to the voices!

Anyone else notice that Azulas eyes only turned yellow in the animation after she learned blue fire?

Oh my gosh this is absolutely brilliant?!!! Wow. I love how you drew Azula hiding behind the pillar as she watched her mother shower Zuko with affection. It gave Azula's pain even more depth, as if she clearly saw the differences and felt left out or shunned. And don't get my started on how perfect the lyrics are! I felt each and every word and my only complaint that it isn't longer 😅 the envy and hurt was so clear and well done. Thank you for bringing this to us! Would love to see lots more atla song-animatic vids. Maybe even a Zuko spin off for this one where his dad shuns him in favour for his sister. Anyway I love this!

I made a fanart of Katara comforting and hugging Azula, while Azula tells her about her mommy issues and Katara is just understanding and listenes.

The fact that the title's meaning only struck near the end made it so much more effective still. Really got me the chills

I think Azula likes thinking that she was a monster in her mother's eyes because otherwise it would mean that she wasn't born a monster. That she's chosen to be, and keeps choosing to be every single day, a monster. If she’s been irredeemable from the start, she never needs to be anything else.

I’ve listened to this song like 10x on repeat n it’s sad how Ursa says “your father doted on your skill” as if to say ‘your father loved what you could DO as in your powerful firebending, not YOU as a daughter.

I have no words for this, it's just so perfect The emotions, the details, the art, everything is just amazing! And I really think this song could be longer tho, it's really good And I feel bad for Azula, she was 14 yo, just a kid, she lived in the hands of a psychopath and abusive father, and always thought her mother hated her, even was betrayed by her only friends, she was just confused and made terrible, terrible decisions on fear
