Fun Fact: The second architect here, Ariadne, shares her name with the character in Greek mythology who helped Theseus navigate the minotaur's maze.

Indeed. I claim that's a clue that she is there to perform Inception on Cobb, likely at the behest of Micheal Caine's character, to get Cobb to forgive himself for his role in his wife's death.

Great reaction like always, There are thrillers, and then there are thrillers. Gripping every second and couching its pages of exposition in the smartest way possible, this movie is original filmmaking at its finest i love Nolan movie. There are some fun-facts about it Christopher Nolan thought of the idea behind this movie when he was 16, and the script took him 10 years to write, Cobb's team used the French song "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien," which translates to "No, I Don't Regret Anything" in English, as a "kick" to signal that it's time to leave a dream. Translated in English, "No, absolutely nothing / No, I regret nothing / It is paid, done, forgotten / I don't care about the past," may allude to Cobb and Saito's recurring line: "Do you want to become an old man, filled with regret, waiting to die alone?" The song is also a direct contrast to Cobb's inability to let go of his late wife, Mal. The cast and crew traveled to a total of six countries while filming this film the locations included the U.S., Morocco, Canada, France, the U.K., and Japan. Nolan's son Magnus played James, Cobb's son. Nolan also cast his cousin, Miranda, as a flight attendant. Joseph Gordon-Levitt said the scene in the hallway was both the most fun and the most painful experience he's ever had on a set. Arthur's totem, an object that signifies whether or not he's in a dream or reality, is a red pair of dice. When he shows it to Ariadne, the side with five dots faces the camera. In his dream at the hotel, the number appears several times. The hotel has at least five floors, and two "5" signs frame Gordon-Levitt several times during the zero-gravity fight scene. The license plates in Yusuf's dream were marked as "The Alternate State." The characters' dreams are filled with subtle hints that separate the subconscious from the real world. Though a minor detail, Nolan changed the cars' license plates to read "The Alternate State," dropping a hint that the action scene was happening in a dream. The scene between Cobb and Miles was shot at the architecture school at University College London, the university where Nolan studied English and met his wife Emma Thomas. Miles makes a reference to DiCaprio's role in "Catch Me If You Can." "Extradition between France and the United States is a bureaucratic nightmare," Cobb told Miles as he discusses his plan to return home to his children in the U.S. That line is a reference to his role as Frank Abagnale Jr., who gets arrested in France and sent back to the U.S. in the film "Catch Me If You Can." Keep up the good work.

Something that most people don't catch is after meeting Yusef and Cobb trying out the sedative in the basement. After waking up he runs to the restroom and never gets a chance to spin his totem, teasing that that rest of the film could be a dream. Love this movie!

After this, the Nolan films you're missing are his first feature-length film, Memento (2000), and his most recent films, Dunkirk (2017), Tenet (2020), and Oppenheimer (2023).

Following, Insomnia?
@bigdream_dreambig
@bigdream_dreambig 7 месяцев назад
@@aBoyHasNoName87 Sure, but in my list I only included feature-length films written and directed by Chris Nolan. Following (1998) isn't feature length (with a run time of only 69 minutes) and Nolan doesn't have a writer credit on Insomnia (2002).
@aBoyHasNoName87
@aBoyHasNoName87 7 месяцев назад
@@bigdream_dreambig Fair. I liked the concept of Following, and for a first-timer with a very small budget it's a really good movie, even if pretty short, as you say. Insomnia is the only actual remake he ever did, and the only one of his movies that I only watched once a long time ago. But in my memory I liked it, without really knowing anything about the director. I think it actually was my first Nolan movie that I just happened to watch as something random and interesting-looking from the thriller category. Everything else and the whole excitement for every new Nolan project came in the years after that ;)

Highly recommend Nolan’s second movie, Memento (2000). You’ll need to pay close attention while watching and very likely need a second watch to fully understand.

I loved this movie so much, I saw it at the theaters 3x when it was first released, and I can count on one hand how many other movies I've done that for. Normally I can't stand to see most movies once, as I find the vast majority not worth my time, so when a movie like "Inception" comes along I show it my support.

I always thought they could have done more clever with the "militarized subconscious" than solely "Guys with guns" but a very small quibble in an otherwise immaculate movie.

Yes, unfortunately one of several massive plot holes involving this film. If your subconscious was militarized, you would switch to acting like that all the time and not continue to be a business man as Fischer was.

Two things that might interest you. One is the "ring theory". Essentially, the Top was Mal's totem, not Cobbs. Cobb used it, but there is another that involves his wedding ring. Because in his mind, he and Mal are still married. Two is the film makers analogy. Cobb is the Director, Saito is the producer, Elliot Page is the writer, Tom Hardy is the actor, etc. take a look.

For the longest time, I figured the top was wobbling, and he’s back in reality. But the children just aren’t right throughout. Philomena’s voice is much older sounding, earlier isn’t the movie (ok…maybe just a glitch), but they are wearing the same clothes throughout…even in the last scene…so I think he’s still in a dream level somewhere…

They left the ending, in my opinion, open to interpretation if he was in a dream still or not. I can see it both ways. The top does look like it's about to topple right before the screen fades to black. However, we don't see it and the house and the age of the children (heck, I haven't checked but possibly even the clothes) are the same. So I lean as to it's a dream he is in. EDIT: I went back and looked and yeah, the clothes are the same it seems. So I'm convinced he was left in the dream.
@maverickmurphy
@maverickmurphy 7 месяцев назад
That's not it. In the movie he never said the top was his totem, it was his wife's. He never said what his totem was. However, there have been theories about what it might be - there are 2 theories that stand out. The first one is his wedding ring. He doesn't wear it when he's awake but he wears it whenever he's in a dream. And in the end, he's not wearing the ring, indicating he's back home. The second theory is his children. In his dreams he can only see them from behind, he never sees their faces, maybe because of his feelings of guilt. However, that may have gone away after he let go of Mal, and it doesn't explain if he's dreaming in the end. There's also the fact that Michael Caine asked Christopher Nolan directly if the ending is reality or a dream, and Nolan said to Caine that if he's in a scene, that scene is in reality. And then there's the theory that the top was actually his totem all along, and in the end when he got back to his family, he simply decided he doesn't care if he's dreaming, he's just accepted it to be his reality, he only wants to be with his family. Hence he doesn't come back to check if the totem dropped.

This film is two stories and a meta-level argument all in one. On one level it's like a "heist" film where a team of specialists is hired to do a job. Only they are there to leave, rather than take, something. On the next level, the film is about Ariadne performing Inception on Cobb, to show him the way out of the maze of his guilt for his wife's death. She was likely hired by the Miceal Caine character. Also, the entire film argues that all movies are like shared dreams, where sometimes we end up in places without knowing how we got there, or where odd things happen that we just need to accept if we are into the narrative, and we can share these experiences with anyone who has seen the same film. Finally, in the end, it does not matter if Cobb is awake or dreaming. If he is awake he is home with his kids. Some suggest lack of his wedding ring means he is no longer in the dream because he only has it on when he is in the dream. However, in his dreams, his ring could also be a representation of his guilt over his wife's death and his not having it on in the end could mean he has forgiven himself. If he is in Limbo, because of the way time works there, then he will still get to see his kids grow up, get married, and have a life. That dream world will become his reality and to paraphrase the old man in Mombassa, "Who are we to say otherwise?" Either way, he is "home" with his kids. Sorry, but if you can't tell, this is my favorite film.

I actually miss Wally Fister's cinematography & lighting. Like, don't get me wrong, I think Nolans' new DP is great, but I don't think he's a good fit for the kinds of visual stories Nolan tends to wanna tell. I think Fister and Nolan were much more compatable. Last I heard, Fister turned to directing, hasn't won anything; yet, he won the Oscar for *this* movie, smh.
