Inclusivity and History are a BAD match!

On this video we are going to talk about inclusivity and how it can affect negatively education as more and more historical shows are starting to misrepresent the past to fit into specific agendas.
Always defend the historical facts and let's try to represent historical events in a way that is as close to what actually happened as possible. in order to do this, we need to stick to the sources, and let history speak for itself, whether we like what it says or not, whether it aligns with our political ideas and personal preferences or not. That's what it means to be a professional on this field.

(UPDATED) Hey Noble Ones! My video wasn't reported after all, apparently my channel and many others are experiencing a youtube bug whereby all of the content on the channel plus my most recently released video aren't visible. Hopefully the problem will be solved soon, but in the meantime, Thank you for checking the video out and commenting it if you do! I really think it's a good video with good potential, so it would be a shame if it lost the chance to get views. Please share it! Thanks! ❤

And the fact is this shoe horning BS isn't what we want as people passionate about history. Pick any person's description from the inclusivity spectrum, there is a factual historical account where such a person was consequential. Instead of forcing a particular type of person into an unrelated history, expand the library of historical stories where that type of person was ACTUALLY CAST by history.

As a black man, I feel zero offense to this. You can't practice inclusivity in something that has already happened. It makes no sense. And Africa, for example, has its own long and rich history that is rarely portrayed in popular media. It's insulting to ignore all that and just shoehorn a few black people and other minorities into cultural portrayals where they would not have otherwise existed. So I'm 100% with you Metatron. I'm not black but fully support this comment. Add to that, and Metatron touched on it, there are SOOOO many amazing historical examples from all races in almost every situation. I think it comes down to lazy writing. Heck, it's really not that hard to pick an era, location, situation, do some research, and find a historical example of, say, a strong asian shop owner in the Wild West or a black man that invented some common item or built some amazing building. If we were to highlight those true examples that can be found, it's so much more powerful in my opinion. Instead, we just rip history apart and shoehorn in what ever tickles our fancy, removing historical context and meaning. It is my opinion that Black History month should be spent highlighting all the amazing Black people that have spent their blood, sweat, and brains into making America what it is today instead of how horrible and oppressive the past was on them. That just leads nowhere. There are a whole slew of examples. Maybe (and don't get me wrong, I enjoy and respect Dr Martin Luther King Jr) but maybe we can rename a few streets to OTHER historical figures that represent the achievements of historical black men and women. I mean, today, you can drive in a city and you'd have the possibility to start at 200 MLK Blvd and have your final destination across town at 200 MLK Blvd. When we only highlight a few, everyone believes that there are only a few.

@@anthonyjordan8620 The culture of the Israelites and Egyptian and languages are no more Bantu than they are Germanic. Semitic languages are mostly in the middle east, and in parts of Africa, and Islam spread Semitic languages the furthest in Africa. However there are some pre-Islamic Semitic languages in Africa. Egyptians had no concept of being "African", then had a concept of Nubians becuase they neighboured them. However they their world view was not just influenced by part of Africa but the Mediterranean and the Levant. Afrocentrisisim is a noble cause however we cannot apply a modern understanding base on modern concepts to historical peoples. The biggest issue is descendents of slaves don't necessarily know which culture to identify with. however we do know which region then came from and which culture an tribes exist there now, and some historical data on those traditions at the time. Which make is all the more a shame there is some much focus of trying link to empires like Ethiopian, Egyptian and Israelite completely ingoing the rich traditions in west Africa, which likely has more relevance to their ancestry.

Imagine a disabled Spartan being treated as a normal occurrence, and you'll get an idea of why inclusivity and history do not mix. History was not an inclusive place. Just like how there was a bottomless pit conveniently located in the center of Sparta or how Persia had war rhinos. Now because of Frank Millers comic book this garbage is taken as facts. if the baby was healthy the father had to raise it and was given a plot of land. If it was Ill it was on the family and if you loved your wife your gonna raise it. Deaf and mute still fought. Hell the blind could still served they would row. Sparta was full of the disabled. The people of Sparta made sure they didn't starve and took it appon their selves to take care of them. The disabled could still be copper smiths, Shepards, fishermen, field hands, sexworkers the list goes on. The guy that was sent back to address the politicians in 300 wasn't chosen because he was a great speaker. I had a conversation with a colleague where he said history is being “white washed” in American text books. He referenced an old school history text book where it showed a pharaoh that was clearly Western European. I agreed but then he referenced Cleopatra. I tried to explain to him that Cleopatra wasn’t dark skinned because she wasn’t descended from Egyptians; she descended from a Greek general. He didn’t acknowledge that statement, unfortunately. I wish I could have really blown his mind and told him in Egypt they had two different skin tones of Egyptians; the lighter skin in the north (more like middle eastern) and the dark skin (black like modern Sudanese) in the south.

I got absolutely blasted on Reddit some time ago for pointing out someone's hyperbolic post claiming "40% of all Samurai were women according to new historical studies" was wrong. I dug through and found the 'study' was a paper written about one specific head burial where people killed by weapons were found. Somehow, pointing out that there was no way of telling who these people were, and that one burial is not representative of all of history got me flamed to no end. Worse was the paper detailed that there were also elderly and children in the burial, so it looked (to me at least) like the aftermath of a massacre rather than a battle. Especially given it took place nowhere near a town rather than a castle where Japanese women might traditionally fight in a siege situation. There are so many cool stories about women in history from the woman warriors of the Sarmatians to the Kandakes who led the Kushites against Rome. What about Qing Shih or Tomyris? It's just so weird to me that historical fact has become somehow controversial.

They change events, technology, language, dress, art, music, warfare, societal norms, etc. If they're going to ignore the accuracy of all those things, I don't really see why they should be concerned about the race of characters being accurate. Obviously if it is an educational documentary or if the creators are striving for a high degree of authenticity, then casting choices which enhance the recreation make sense, but for the majority of historical pieces like "Vikings" or "The Great" which take huge liberties about every other historical aspect, it seems perfectly reasonable to ignore race in casting.
@sertu1462
@sertu1462 3 года назад
@@recurrenTopology Well, movies in historical settings can have two goals; to educate or to entertain. If it's goal is to teach, it should be accurate. If it's goal is to entertain it should feel authentic. So if, for example, a story takes place in the 13th century and they use a weapon from the 14th century, it would still feel authentic to most viewers, despite being inaccurate, so they can still feel immearsed in the depicted world. Having diversity in historical settings where there wasn't any neither is accurate nor feels accurate, so it fails for both aspects. Even average viewers who are not historical experts are able to notice that it's unrealistic.

I'm Chinese and growing up in Canada, I would very rarely see any character in any series who looked like me. The first character I felt a connection to was Xiao Jun from the Assassin's Creed series when Embers came out, and I'll never forget that feeling of there being someone like me in a franchise I loved so much. The thing is, her character is ethnically and culturally Chinese, and even if she travelled all the way to Italy to meet with Ezio, her history is still very much tied to China and she expresses the wish to learn from Ezio so that she can go back home and protect her people. She's not denying her heritage. She wants to protect it. On the other side, I grew up being obsessed with Greek Mythology bc I thought the stories were absolutely fascinating. But not once, NOT once did I ever wish a character / hero in any story were Chinese, bc even as a kid, I understood the concept that this is Greek culture and not mine. For me having a Chinese person be thrown into an Ancient Greek setting (especially Mythology) for no reason other than inclusivity would've completely thrown me off bc why the heck are they putting someone from MY culture into a setting they don't belong to ? I agree with this concept being really offensive to the cultures those production companies want to "include" for the sake of representation. Yes, representation matters -- which is exactly why it needs to be done properly instead of it being entirely superficial. I have as much in common with a random Greek Mythology hero being played by a Chinese actor than I do with a person from Eswatini. Representation isn't just about physical appearance. I can't see myself in a character who doesn't share the same cultural background as me, it's as simple as that.

I just started teaching History last year, and I was shocked at what they made me do. I studied History for 8 years in university, so I felt quite ready to teach it so kids. I was assigned 8th and 9th grade kids (around 13-15 years old). For 8th grade we start with the first exploration and expansion incursions into North Africa (I'm from Portugal), so I would start talking about sub saharan slavery a few weeks after I got the job. In almost all classes there where "special education" kids. And for those we need to prepare a different program according to their capabilities. I thought that they would just get a different evaluation method, but no. They wanted me to change the program, so that those kids would feel "comfortable". As I didn't know these kids, one "special education teacher" came to "help me" modify the program to their needs. In the end they made me remove all that contained violence, discrimination and any kind of "negative" thing, thus turning History into just flowers, peace and love... At that point I realised that such thing would be impossible! Those special kids have History class together with the "regular students", how can I explain slavery (for example) to the class and not to those 2 or 3 kids that "can't ear about it"? The solution that was imposed on me was terrible... but i had to do it (though then I had to assign special extra homework readings and such - that then I could not comment in class - to the regular kids, so that they at least had the chance to learn the truth). The "solution" was simple, apparently they have been doing it for years... special educations kids have priority, so I teach the class only what they special education kids can know! It was a very frustrating process. I questioned why didn't we just form a class with all the special kids, that way the others could learn the full program... they said that that was not "inclusive", special education kids must be evenly distributed among all classes. This will be the second year that I'll teach... and I'm afraid that I'll have to literally cut History again. I have a master's degree in Military History... not being able to teach anything that involves strife or conflict is torture for me! Just for disclosure, most of my "special education kids" didn't have anything major, just some minor dyslexia or learning disorder. They themselves where sometimes interested in learning about "more fun parts", like wars and such. The problem was the special education teachers, they dictate what they think the kids should learn. This is a problem that basically only applies to History class. Some kind of balance must be reached before it's too late. If we keep forming up adults that don't know History, they will not be interested in preserving History as well. Just two days ago a National Monument to the discoveries/navigations was vandalized. At the same time there seems to be a huge lack of History teachers in schools. In the one that I was, most History teachers where not really History teachers, but portuguese (language), and even theatre teachers filling in the gap. Even the few that where officially "History Teachers", didn't really study History in university, they had a course in "education of history". None of them every actually studied History. And yet, people like me, that really studied History, can not apply to be History Teachers.... we can only fill gaps, via temporary contracts. I don't know if other countries have the same issue... but here the situation is getting dire. And then people get surprised that more and more young adults join extremist movements...

Wrong, you don't "have to do it", teach the damn truth you coward. Set the special kids another task to do while you plough through the "bad" stuff or simply tell them that the class is not suitable for them given the restrictions and that they're welcome if they are willing to engage with the curriculum. THIS is exactly why kids know nothing about history, logic or life and end up with twisted versions of history and alien ideologies in their heads.

Seems like they want to teach the kids that history was all peace and love and forget that we have to learn from our past mistakes. I have friends who teach history at school or university and describe the experience as "worthy of committing professional suicide". My own Phd supervisor told me that he had to teach who Rhamses II was to university students of history because no one knew nothing about him nor from the bible, documentaries nor books. I'm worried that the lowering of educational standards in history will have grave consequences in the future given the current expansion of woke and conspirational theories culture. 1) Is it possible that some people watch movies/dramas for entertainment and not for purely historical accuracy. I still love 'Braveheart' regardless of how much of an ass mel gibson was/is, yet it's not a particularly historically accurate movie 2) Why do you think skin colour is important in telling a story, if skin colour is no relevant to the story being told. If you want to talk about stuff like marvel movie, the original captain america has to be a white anglo saxon protestant, luke cage has to be black... the human torch's skin colour has nothing to do with his story arc. And if you want to talk history, Shakespere wrote about europeons, should a non europeon never act in a shakespere play? 3) Why do you take it that something like a asian actor in a historical movie is part of an agenda to increase relatability but you don't ascribe the same motives to movies such as 'the gods of egypt' or any movie featuring Jesus and their agenda to white wash history? 4) Do you see many black/asian actors protraying characters in the movies/doccumenatries that are meant for the more historically accurate crowd? Do you see any at all? As far as I understand it there are plenty of historically accurate movies/shows or ones that pay alot of lip service, 'Gettysburg', 'Northman' etc. This video itself provided of only 2 examples, one of which was a cartoon for kids. 5) Do you think a cartoon meant for kids should perhaps be more about exciting their interest to learn or about being historical accurate? 6) And if all your answers amount to, that anything and everything should be sacrificed on the altar of historical accuracy, fair enough. Seems to be this channel's opinion as well. I just don't care for that opinion.

Current technological developments have the potential to fundamentally change the extent and characteristics of social inequality. Traditional influencing factors of social mobility such as origin or educational qualifications are also changed by technological change. In this age human traits are promoted but used differently until they are only used to manipulate and change the facts behind supposed truths. The story within a story, fixed on a time scaler, will be interpreted just as diverse as the many truths within the interpretation itself. It is very important that historians defend themselves against this trend and honor and defend world history from the deluge of false information.

Great video! As a historian and gay man, I often have had to educate members of my own LGBTQ+ community about the place of sexual minorities/identities in history and the dangers of sticking definitions and concepts invented in the 19th and 20th centuries to people who lived hundreds or thousands of years ago. Even though, per intance, there were men who preferred to engage in same sex relations in some cases throughout history, these men did not identify themselves as gay or as homosexual, for those concepts were completely alien to them. Even if you met the members of the Sacred Band of Thebes in Ancient Greece, they would probably tell you they first are foremost saw themselves as Thebans, then Greeks, then men... but they would not call themselves gay. In many non European cultures, some people were categorized and members of a third sex, often associated to mystical/ceremonial roles. But these people would not consider themselves bi/trans or non binary. Also, that we see two female or male vikings sleeping togheter is not the issue. It's to go from a sexual act to the portraying of a modern-inspired same-sex couple that is problematic. And if we are to show men loving men in the Middle Ages, let's show it for what it was, something that you kept quiet if not protected by being of the upper aristocracy unless you wanted to risk being castrated or killed...

Hollywood isn't "bad at history; " it's simply blatantly greedy. They do whatever they can to milk every last cent they can out of every film or show they possibly can. It's why I like Quintin Tarantino; he cares about the quality und to a large degree in some of his films, the accuracy of every film he creates, rather than half ass something that fits political standards for a quick buck. I've always preferred Tarantino over anyone else because he puts care und hard work into his now considered by many people, amazing films. (Before I get replied to about my typos of "und," I am German und saying "and" as "und" when I type, simply is more comfortable for me. This goes for "yes" und "no," as well. I prefer to say "ja" und "nein." Also, it's xenophobic to call every German a Nazi, simply BECAUSE they're German. We hate it when you, referring to mainly Americans, call us that. Sorry for the length of my tangent, not sorry for the points I made.) I am simply glad someone else in the world, Metatron, agrees with me. Now I know I'm not alone when I say I'm not homophobic or racist because I tell people things like "knights weren't Asian," or "The ancient Roman army wasn't only gay soldiers." History is about unbiased facts, fiction is where you should put representation if you want it so badly.

I personally think being represented HELPS, but it’s not a requirement. Like my main thing is that maybe it can help me see myself in them more, but if they try to shove it in my face, stopping the story to make a comment about how Racism/ homophobia=bad instead of interweaving it with the story in a compelling and natural way, then that’s when it feels like being preachy and THATS when I’m like “hey… but is the story good?… are the characters actually good?…” while I don’t think you really need much reason to make a character another ethnicity or sexual orientation in a story (I mean like Overly Sarcastic Productions made a video- I think it was called “Manly Men Trope” about how the base character for stories is white, male, and straight and that any deviation from that is seen as an add-on. I don’t know, that just felt interesting to me) but I do care if it’s just there to capitalize on people’s political ideas, or feel preachy- which the both usually go in tandem. Sooo basically I agree with this video, I think that diversity is good, but don’t be preachy about it, and don’t get mad when something’s not diverse enough UNLESS they specifically whitewashed established minority characters or made characters with established sexual orientations NOT be that… but that’s just me •-•

Yet because a Declaration of Independence was uncommon, it gave the Americans an advantage because Britain didn’t know how to react to it. It wasn’t until I was 28 and reading “Brothers at Arms” did I learn that not only did the British know what it was, but George III decried them in Parliament for wanting to create a new empire of their own. I love watching old period dramas set in the England of a few centuries ago but I also love history and while I have no problem with having a multi-ethnic caste in modern settings, it just did not fit (to the extent it was presented) with that time period in England and I really hate seeing history misrepresented because the vast majority of viewers will just adopt what they see on tv as actual history and that's dangerous to feed misinformation to people. We've seen Americans do this so often in their historical dramas and today so many Americans have a warped understanding of various historical events due to stuff like that...

useful inclusivity of history would be "lets look at American colonial period from the view of a black woman" or "what did the black africans think of ancient egypt?" This allows both opportunities for other points of view and voices that tend to be underrepresented. That isn't the same thing as making a movie about the civil war and replacing general lee with a mexican or having jackie chan play memnon of rhodes. The first 2 ideas are adding inclusivity to our culture through expanded historical viewpoints. The second 2 are examples adding inclusivity to culture through alternate history.

YES! Underrated comment. All tossing minorities into roles historically played by others does is, if anything, enrage people and make them stop watching out of frustration at the blatant pandering. It's also a disservice to the people tossed in as tokens to check boxes, and bad for the media because they might not (oftentimes it seems) are not the best for the job. This therefore makes people hate the series and have a reflexive revulsion to the very IDEA of inclusivity because it's a term loaded with memories of the destruction of beloved franchises, or of the pointless and deceptive shoehorning of minorities into non-fiction. THIS idea however, actually piqued my interest, that *actually* sounded like a potentially intriguing story despite my aversion to the term "inclusive th" these days due to the aforementioned reasoning. However, creating a good story from scratch isn't as efficient at preaching ideology to as many people as possible with a minimum of effort. By comparison to just parasitizing a beloved fiction franchise or non-fiction setting and using it up until it's sucked dry of fans, creating a good story and accurately representing history, building a fan base and doing good work and all that, is far less economical. Further, people who might normally appreciate it might be exhausted of seeing "inclusive" media of any sort and associate it with failure the moment they look at it, passing it by without a second glance; another disservice the current implementation of "inclusivity" foists on its supposed goal.

I totally agree with you on everything. And wish to add an example of my opinion of the following: Avery Brooks was selected to play Benjamin Sisko (Deep Space Nine) from among 100 other possible candidates. He was chosen because of his skill, charisma, and as I'd presume, behavioral compatibility with what the writer would imagine that character to have in the series. He was chosen because of skill and effort. And being a skilled actor. The fact that he is black is irrelevant. Further more. Prior to the show, that character did not exist, and thus had no precedent. So Avery Brooks being cast as Sisko is what I call natural and organic inclusivity free of agenda or bias. What do you think.

Stories like that of Yasuke are sometimes perceived as justification for anachronistic diversity. In reality the fact that we remember them just proves how extraordinary these ethnic outliers were in their historic context.
@happydemon3038
@happydemon3038 3 года назад
It also proves the hipocrisy of the people calling for diversity. As instead of adapting that story, they want to make another adaptation of a well known story and deliberately add inaccuracies. And when you then search for that original story of real history, you may not find it because the other adaptations fills up the search results instead. Thus it works to make obscure stories get ever closer to becoming forgotten stories.

As an asian i never feel like I cannot relate to the histories and struggles of other cultures and races just because they dont look or share the same skin as me. You respect diversity by respecting and appreciating the different races and cultures, not by trying to make them the same. The celebration of inclusivity is by embracing the fact that all humans can empathize with the struggles of others, not by forcing others into another's histories or turning a person of historical importance into something that he or she is not, not even in appearance. I would feel insulted if they changed Julius Caesar into an asian just because they are trying to promote inclusivity. If you want to promote appreciation for asians, then you portray real asian figures. By trying to make an Italian an asian, you are basically saying there is no one in my history that's worth talking about so you export a white western person to be ours. Thats incredibly rude and insulting, in fact, its incredibly rac1st.
@0th_Law
@0th_Law 2 года назад
Note: it'd be pretty easy to justify a Roman character being Asian. Not East Asian (typically anyway) but 100% West or South Asian. Remember that Rome bordered Persia & Arabia, and thus could and did have some contact with the Indian subcontinent. Julius Caesar, if someone wanted to portray him as not strictly Mediterranean, could definitely go for a bit of North or West African, due to the easy cultural proximity. Still, there have been Roman artifacts found as far east as Japan, and where there's trade, there's traders. And where there's traders, there's the opportunity for people to migrate.
