I went to high school with Tori, and had the privilege of singing with her and hearing her play many times. We all knew she was going to be legendary; we just didn't know what flavor of legendary. This flavor is... very tasty.
That's amazing, I just love her, she seems to be so sweet yet so badass at the same time, my cup of tea❤ hope she brings you sweet High School memories😊
Next Tori Amos song should be her live version of Winter. So you can watch her play and sing a beautiful haunting song that will touch you deep into your soul.
Silent All These Years, Winter, Pretty Good Year, and God are some other good ones by her. Both Tori and Fiona will always be 2 of my favorites for their amazing songwriting, vocals, and piano skills.
The title of this song, "Cornflake Girl" is a satire of Tori's real life. She was in a commercial for Kellogg's Just Right cereal in 1985.(you can find it on RU-vid, Tori had short dark brown hair) The satire in the lyrics is her talking about her big break is a cereal commercial, and not being a real musician. "This is not really happening - you bet your life it is" The bitter taste of this really pushed her to get away from advertising and follow her dreams of music. "Never was a Cornflake Girl" But hey, everyone had to start somewhere.
The Kellogg bros and their former employee who stole their trade secrets are in the same graveyard. Those guys were cult members. They believed that masturbation was a sickness and it was caused by a diet of spicy and sweet food so they mashed up some bland boring grain, roasted it until it was golden brown, threw it in a bowl with some milk and called it corn flakes and grape nuts. John Kellogg invented the stuff and his brother Will ran the factory and did the marketing. He changed the recipe to make it sweeter to boost profits.
The real story behind it is as Amber mentioned at the end-toxic female friendship. Cornflake girls would hurt you at any opportunity, a subtle reference to FGM, which is often done or facilitated by females closest to the victim.
@@davidthaler7018 At the time this came out, I read an interview where she said she never wanted to act like the other white girls at school ("cornflake" being a known slang word for white person), and preferred to hang out with people of color ("Hangin' with the raisin girls"). Since Tori has given different versions of the meaning of this song, I am not saying this one is the "correct" answer. With her explanations changing all the time, it's like she is the Coen Brothers of music. 😄
I saw her in concert earlier this year. At times she will turn to face the audience straddling the piano bench. She'll play a keyboard with her right hand and a the piano with her left hand.
@@RandomJane104 Bet she picked it up from watching Billy Joel. He played a mellotron and a piano at the same time in concert on Just the Way You Are. He tape looped it on the board in the studio instead of using a mellotron.
She is a musical prodigy and genius. She went to the Peabody school at 5 years old.She also has synesthesia which is amazing to know while you watch her play.
I usually don't prefer live versions to studio versions, but her live performance of "Winter" from Montreaux is Tori at her most enchanting. IMO the greatest female artist of all time.
@@lynnevetterthis is my favorite song of all time 😊 this was just the radio edit (which is absolutely awesome!), but the 6 minute album version just has the most killer piano solos that go even longer than they do here. It’s the perfect song to me- it’s unique, it’s got quirky interludes, her vocal range is amazing, there’s three different countermelodies, two different harmonies, and probably the best piano solo I’ve ever heard. This song still rocks my world almost 30 years after first hearing it ❤
@@lynnevetterI love anything Tori tbh. I think Under The Pink and Little Earthquakes are her best albums. Silent All These Years is amazing, hopefully they do that soon. Crucify is amazing, “God” is probably in my top 15-20 songs of all time, Past The Mission, The Wrong Band, The Waitress, Winter, Girl, A Sorta Fairytale… those are probably my favorite Tori songs ;)
If you love Tori you might also like PJ Harvey, especially "Down By the Water" and "Good Fortune". This is my favorite song by Tori Amos, which has a little Kate Bush influence. Happy Thanksgiving ❣
Another reason to love this channel. I had not heard this before and probably would not have sought it out. But this track is fire and listening to it for the first time with RSR was a total joy. Thanks guys for playing this one ✌️
Yes!!! Thank you so much for sharing this! I love Tori and this is my favorite showcase of her piano playing! YAY!!! Next up: her live Montreux version of "Winter"!
Silent All These Years or the live version of Winter are both can’t go wrong picks. I’m a metal head and 90’s grunge guy. But I’ve been a huge fan of hers since I first heard her when she first came out. She transcended any sort of classification. She is in a class by herself.
I'm mostly a Metalhead too and I've been to Tori four times live! I've heard this from several other people, I think Tori Amos and metal are siblings LOL
This is a deep and wonderful rabbit hole to fall into! My favorite Tori song is "Raspberry Swirl", but "Winter" and "Silent All These Years" are also amazing. I got to see her in concert last year and she sounds so sooo good. She sits between two pianos, playing one with one hand and one with the other. As a fellow pianist, I am super impressed by her!
Tori Amos is one of the many artists who got their inspiration from none other than Kate Bush. If you have any more plans for Kate, i suggest Moments Of Pleasure or Love And Anger feat. David Gilmour. Both great songs.
You really should check out Tori Amos live at Montreux 1991/1992. Winter and Silent All These Years are incredible songs. Her performance of Me and a Gun will take a piece of you. It's amazing yet deep and painful.
😂😂😂😂😂 it's cornflake girl!!!😂😂❤❤❤❤❤❤ Seeing her live is....AWESOME!!! An incredible piano player. She has a few live albums that smoke her studio work.
Oh BROTHER-Can the guys PLEASE at least get the names of the songs right before posting?? HOW has nobody in the comments section caught this mistake either?! Its a feminist anthem about a painful subject-the name MATTERS!
I have been lucky to see Tori 5 times including her 1st tour back in 92 for Little Earthquakes. She never fails to impress and the range of her music is great. I would recommend Jackie's Strength, Cruel, Concertina, Caught a Lite Sneeze, A Sorta Fairtytale, Job's Coffin (duet with her daughter Natasha), Unrepentant Geraldines, Trouble's Lament. She has many great covers like Leonard Cohen's - Famous Blue Raincoat, 10cc's - I'm Not in Love, Nirvana's - Smells Like Teen Spirit.
This reminds me I haven't listened to Tori in a long time but I always loved her. Her first 2-3 albums are especially great. Other favorites of mine are: "Silent All these Years", "Winter", "Precious Things", her cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "God", "Pretty Good Year" and "Girl". There are many more but these are the ones that immediately pop into my head.
So happy and grateful you finally reacted to Tori. However...You MUST watch her LIVE!!!! Try Precious Things Live in Session. She is the kind of artist to watch live. You will see....❤
Guys!! Im so pleased! I wanted you to find more tori amos to watch and listen with us. I think you would enjoy a lot her live version of Winter (live at montreaux 91 with the blue outfit), the talent and genius of tori playing piano live and also a song about her relationship with her father. Jay will love that. After that, you should try a newer song by tori where she sings with her 14 years old daughter called promise, amber would melt with the song and lyrics
Carbon is another absolute BEAUTY of a track when you want to experience her complexity of vocals and piano work, but more than that also just a really interesting and unique song too. Also DEFINITELY check out Spark, Caught a Lite Sneeze, Baker Baker, Hey Jupiter, Winter or Precious Things for other particular standout and strikingly ORIGINAL tracks from Tori ...
She was in a commercial for Just Right, which you can look up on RU-vid, but that's not what this song is about. Cornflakes were invented to curb masturbation and some of the lines were inspired by female genital mutilation in Africa. There's a lot to it though. ;)
@@DiogenesDecibelCornflake girls are those who pretend to be your friend but would hurt you without hesitation; that’s a subtle reference to FGM, which is often done by or facilitated by those closest to the victims. Raisin girls are rarer (think cereal, box) and of better quality.
If you revisit Tori, try her live performance of “Winter” from Montreux. As the parents of daughters, it will move you. Gorgeous “coming of age” song that she wrote for her dad. ❤️✌️
1994 i was 21. I just came back from an overseas deployment. I had PTSD. Tori Amos and the UK band Portishead helped me. I also got Cocteau Twins albums. Garlands. Head over Heals. Really released some.
Oh yes. A uniquely talented singer-songwriter, with piano chops to boot! If you like this one, then you'll want 'Sweet the Sting' on your to-listen list...
One of the best songs of all time is "Winter", esp. in the live at Montreux Version. A very emotional song and a piano master piece. I'm sure you would love it.
Been a fan for 20+ years, seen her live 9 times, and while this is the arguably one of her most popular songs, I'm always still mesmerized by it. It still hits, every, single time.
Echoing the recommendations of others here: "Winter", "Little Earthquakes", "China", and "Precious Things" are amazing songs from the early years in Tori's career. I think you would love those and be incredibly impressed. "Winter", live, especially, is a performance to blow you away. Tori's cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is breathtaking.
Back in the late 80’s, she fronted a pop-rock band, Y Kant Tori Read, and Matt Sorum was the drummer. After they broke up, he joined The Cult for a bit. After THAT, he replaced GNR drummer Steven Adler in 1991.
She's been around since my mid twenties and never checked out her stuff. About a decade ago I came across Welcome to England on the Craig Ferguson show. PHENOMENAL!
Kudos to Tori Amos. She is a true artist and completely original. I’ve always had the utmost respect for her. Everything she writes and sings is packed with emotion. 🕊❤️🎼
Some more 80s female singers or female led groups: Sass Jordan (Canadian rocker) - if you’re gonna love me, I will make you a believer; Alannah Myles - Love is; Missing persons - words, walking in l.a., destination unknown; Toni childs - don’t walk away, I’ve got to go now; Michelle shocked - if love was a train; Lone justice - shelter, ways to be wicked; The motels - total control; Romeo void - a girl in trouble, never say never
Since you know "Smells Like Teen Spirit" you should try her version of the song; it's almost a completely new thing! Tori Amos is one of my favorite artists ever, and definitely one of the best of the 90's! in concerts she has 2 pianos set up, with her in the middle, and it's an amazing show!!
I got to see Tori in Denver years ago. She is a breath of fresh air and plays piano like no one else (literally). My favorite of hers is "Spark," although the video is very disturbing.
Imagine how hard/amazing/otherworldly it is to conceive of a piece like this. So much is going on. I love it. I hear something new everytime I listen to it. Did she really think to put all that in there? A different level.
On my last comment for your reaction to Peter Gabriel's 'Don't Give Up' I mentioned that the sonic quality of a song in the studio is due to many factors. I also mentioned that it had been mixed by the amazing Kevin Killen. What a coincidence, this one is too! One of the all time great recording and mixing engineers . Please react to the live version of this song at "Oxygen Concert 2003" with Matt Chamberlain on drums and Jon Evans on bass...amazing!
I was lucky enough to have seen her in concert and she was amazing. More respect to her, in addition to her talent, she escaped her past and helps others like her. Great album.
Tori is a deep dive artist for me. Precious Things, Silent All These Years, God, Spark, Donut Song, A Sorta Fairytale, Crucify, Me and a Gun, Sugar, Bliss, Jackie's Strength, Honey, Cooling. Yep, Tori's a deep deep dive.
The lady who sings the "man with the golden gun" part is Merry Clayton, famous for singing the chorus with Mick Jagger on The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter"
My wife and I recently starting watching your channel together and we love you guys. She has seen Tori live 78 times so you could say she’s a super fan. She was so excited to see you reacting to her. And we’d definitely love some more! Thank you guys for your channel and what you do.
She`s fantastic, I played this and other songs from her in an FM Radio station in the south of Brazil, it was in the late 80`s. The piano, the voice, the bassist, OMG! Unforgettable songs from Tori Amos. And there`s no guitars (I love guitars, but not in her songs). That`s why I`m here today, listening it again!
You guys need to watch and feature a live concert. If you think her sound is impressive watching the studio versions… man you have to see her live working that Bosendorfer grand piano along with another keyboard either above it or behind her, sometimes all three. And in some of her songs she adds the harpsichord. You HAVE to see/show her in a live show.
More Tori please! Icicle, Leather, Winter, Pretty Good Year, Horses, please do one of her live versions so you can truly appreciate how talented she is to be able to sing so well while also playing such amazing piano!
"Snowflake?" Me thinks you mistyped. Great song, and great reaction. Ms. Amos is, and always will be, one f my favorites. You should check out her version of "Feels Like Teen Spirit" or her version of Eminems "97 Bonnie and Clyde". She isn't afraid to put herself out there. She was a survivor of an assult, and she sort of sings about it. "Me and a Gun" where she lightly plays, and talks about the attack. Before she made it big, she was in a band with Slash called "Y Kant Tori Read?" She got her start playing at a piano bar for tips, and the two times I saw her in concert, she stops midway through and takes requests from the audience. I got to hear her do "Suzanne" and "I Ran". I hope you continue to react to her music.
