This humpack really was gentle and wanted to play with us. We filmed this on our Anniversary holiday at Treasure Island resort, Eueiki in Tonga. We ran out of film after 30 minutes but she played with us for another hour. :) This was the most incredible and humbling experience of our lives to be hounoured with the attention from this gentle giant.

@@DavvyKat we had a Global treaty to not hunt whales. Only for scientific research. Japan took many more than for scientific research, but still claimed research. Not this species, but perhaps Minkes? Not for sure on species. Japan has now broken treaty about whales. I guess like Trump with Paris accord. Plus the man made noise in ocean can damage them. It just makes me nervous when they become acclimated to man, when in reality they could be hunted again at any time. I think this ones juvenile? She blinked her eye. There's someone home inside every being.

Lisa Epperson, yes, they hunt minke and a few species of other small whales. They hunt them for their meat even though they often deny hunting them in large quantities for that purpose. They lie and say they need extravagant numbers for “research”. I never have believed their story. It’s a blatant lie they’re feeding the world.

I forgot to add that the "slow eye blink" was definitely a sign of trust. With cats, if you look them straight in the eye, and they give you "the slow blink" that is their signal that they trust you. I believe that was true in this instance with the whale. Also, that whale was acutely aware of your fragility as a human- at one point when she got very close to you with her pectoral fin, she very carefully moved it away from you so as not to accidentally hit you with it! What an AMAZING experience you had, and I do hope you can go back again to swim with the whales!

That is even more incredible that the whale actually followed you back to the resort, and stayed close by!! It almost sounds as though she was waiting for you to come back and swim with her again so she could play with you! Truly amazing... I'm sure researchers who have read about your unique experience are puzzled- has any researcher contacted you so they could get additional information and details about your encounter? I am sure there is much they could learn from your experience with this whale. It sounds like this was a fairly young whale. As they are much more curious and inquisitive than older whales. Nevertheless, something VERY special was occurring between you and her! Absolute magic...! Oh, to know what was in the mind and thoughts of that whale as she was playing with you, and following you back to the resort to wait for you convinces me more than ever that she was attempting to communicate with you. There was a definite connection between the two of you that day!

This is my dream to one day see these whales, swimming free. In Baja there are three lagoons where the grey whales actively seek interaction with humans, swimming right up to the boats to enjoy being touched and petted! They seem to especially love having their tongues and baleen massaged! Scientists have no explanation for this behavior which has been going on for approximately 40 years now. Thus is particularly fascinating given how cruelly they were slaughtered during the whaling industry. But these “friendly whales” are even teaching their babies to approach the boats, and at times the momma whale will lift her calf up on her back so the calf can get a better look at the humans! This is just truly remarkable and demonstrates an ability for these whales to be so forgiving and trusting of us humans. However, when these whales leave the lagoons on their migration to Alaska and vice versa, they do not show thus behavior- it only occurs in these three lagoons in Baja . I believe that there is a connection between whales and humans, and they are extremely perceptive. You obviously touched the whale you were swimming with on a much deeper level than most humans have the ability to- your souls and spirits connected that day. I do hope you go back, for I have no doubt that you will have this experience again. Do you have plans to go back to Tonga? I’m sure many people would look forward to seeing more of your incredible videos! Thank you so much for sharing this one...it’s absolutely THE best out there!

The more I think about it . . . that whale trusted you all so much that in slow motion it closed and opened its eye. INCREDIBLE! A whale would only do that if fully trusting and perhaps even a little shy. Just like horses it is sometimes hard to conceive that a creature so big and powerful could be so sensitive. Similarly in the Keller Laros video where he untangles the trusting the tangled dolphin, the dolphin and the whale already know that man is a very special creature that is willing and able to help them. It's in their DNA as they say, but put another way they were created to look up to man. man having "dominion over the animals" shouldn't mean that he should rule them, but it does mean that the animals have an inherent respect for good people. I searched every video for closeups of the eye and you have captured the finest moments! Terry

You know when I was filming this I was just holding the camera in the general direction but looking at the whale directly and not through the lens, if you know what I mean and the feeling you get when you look eye to eye with such a majestic animal knowing that neither is going to harm each other, is just indescribable. I have 30 mins of film but the whale stayed with us for 1 and 1/2 hours. We are still reliving those moments after almost 1 and 1/2 years agog that this took place. I can only hope that everyone should get such a moment once in their lives.

Fiddlestx2...Indeed..I never seen a whale's eye that close up. It truly gives me goosebumps every time I look at it. I must say I don't know how these majestic whales can trust us humans. Look at what we have done to them for so long. I'm perplexed.
@Fiddlestx2
@Fiddlestx2 6 лет назад
You shouldn't be perplexed . . . after all it's not like the whales chat with each other about us humans and what wrongs people did to them throughout history. It is enough to know now, thanks to videos like this, that the whales look up to us, trust us and find us fascinating, showing their desire to interact with us in loving playful ways. It's like the Keller Laros incredible Dolphin video. The dolphin intelligently and instinctively knew that man could help him. With just the come here gesture of his fingers the Dolphin came right to him, trustingly presenting his entangled pectoral fin to Keller.. It takes time to teach a dog to respond to hand signals like that . . . even if you are skilled at teaching.
@joannewlands4962

I wouldn’t be too sure that whales don’t communicate with each other about interactions they have had with humans in the past. When the whaling industry so cruelly slaughtered the grey whales in Scammions Lagoon in Baja, the mother whales retaliated by crushing the whaling boats with their tales. For some inexplicable reason, about 40 years ago a grey whale approached a fisherman, and brought her calf to his boat so he could touch it. Slowly, other whales started approaching boats of scientists trying to understand this behavior. The whales continued to seek interaction with humans. This activity only occurs in three lagoons in Baja. They are all protected World Heritage Sites and the “friendly whales” as they are now called are protected by strict laws. It is a very lucrative business for the fishermen to take tourists out on their pangas to see and touch these beautiful whales. The mother whales will bring their calves right up to the boats, sometimes lifting it on their backs so the calves have a better look at the humans. To me, it’s obvious that these whales do indeed communicate with each other.
@Nancy-mk9ls
@Nancy-mk9ls 6 лет назад
I love hearing what you are sharing. My only sadness, is in thinking during the history of man slaughtering whales that it’s possible the whales approached them in the same manner, wanting to interact or show off their young. It’s heartbreaking to think in return they were killed. I love these beautiful animals!

Hi again, David! Just ran across an interesting article about research that shows that whales and dolphin brains are the only animal species besides humans that have spindle cells - these special cells are responsible for the ability to feel emotions such as love, grief, empathy and compassion,etc....this confirms my belief that you and this whale definitely were communicating with each other on a special level. It also helps explain why whales and dolphins have shown extreme grief over the death of their calves, or have been so eager to join in play with humans. It would be very interesting if researchers could view your video playing with the whale and talk to you about your interaction with her that you weren’t able to film because your camera batteries died. There is much to be learned from your amazing experience with this wonderful whale! Unfortunately I was not able to copy and paste the link here, but if you google “whales in love independent.uk” I think you could find it. Really intriguing research findings...

David, New question ; Is it possible that your whale was asking you to scrape the barnacles off her chin or would have welcomed that ?? I've watched it so many times that sometimes I think that might be the case, but I also think that if it was bothering her she could rub on the bottom in shallower water. It would have been interesting to use a snorkel tube or something to remove them and to see how she responded to that. Terry

@davidbruce2559 6 лет назад
Hi, Yes we had thought of that, but not the barnacles , but rather the crabs on her skin. We learnt after that they attach themselves an burrow in the skin. We saw on the video that she had one really close to her eye. In retrospect I would have loved to have tried to get rid of that one at least. I wold not have tried using any tool of sorts as you can imagine we were feeling pretty lucky to experience this, the last thing we wanted to do was possibly harm her, even with the best intentions.
@Fiddlestx2
@Fiddlestx2 6 лет назад
Hi, Which eye was it? I'm wondering if the slow blink could have been deliberate, to draw your attention to that eye. After keller Laros' dolphin seeking his help, nothing would surprise me. I've been checking out other whale videos to see if those barnacle patches are common but they don't seem to be which could indicate that the whale would be glad to have them gone. Good thing you didn't try to brush the barnacles off by hand . . . they cut like razors. You can lay on them or stand on them but they don't cut until you brush across them as you probably know. Terry
@FantasyAddict95
@FantasyAddict95 6 лет назад
either way, trying to remove the parasites would likely have spooked her or caused harm. Barnacles are very tough to get off, and others that had embedded themselves would have left some damage behind, especially if you don't know how to handle them. If you did that and ended up doing something she didn't like, she might have freaked out and hurt someone by accident and then swam off. plus, after leaving you guys, new stuff would have popped up and taken its place anyways.

One more question! In the beginning of your fascinating video, the whale can be heard vocalizing briefly- at least I think it was her. In either event, during your interaction with her, which you said lasted about an hour and a half, did she vocalize or “sing” differently, depending on how close your contact was with her? I still can’t get over how she followed you back to the resort area, and appeared to be waiting for you! I truly believe that you both made a very special connection that day, and this whale was communicating with you on a very different level that most humans aren’t perceptive enough to recognize. That’s why I’m so curious about what sounds you may have heard the whale make while she was playing with you! Thank you again so very much for answering my questions and sharing the details of your remarkable experience with this beautiful and gentle whale...if I ever am lucky enough to go to Tonga one day to swim with the whales, I think I would feel as though I was in Heaven amongst the angels...just watching your video brings tears to my eyes seeing the absolute purity of innocence and trust that existed between you and the whale. Thank you again.

Has it occurred to anyone that the those wales come to get the barnacles removed, this particular one appears to have a load under its chin, there must be something these people could buy that would take them off.

Hello, fellow cetacean fans. Here after watching a video - twice - where people brushed barnacles from delighted whales. :-) How marvelous: Those flukes are so powerful, yet they glide gently past careful of little beings. Saving earth. Let's do this. ♡☆

David, You said something very profound that is the essence of your communication that established playful harmonious fellowship with the whale.. You wrote: "The feeling you get when you look eye to eye with such a majestic animal knowing that neither is going to harm each other, is just indescribable." As surely as you let the whale know you only had love, respect and admiration in your heart, the whale communicated the same message to you.. These guys are the Kings of the sea! Look at the might reflected in that eye. they drive off orcas to protect smaller creatures. It takes a whole pod of orcas and a coordinated sustained attack to separate a Humpback calf from its mother. the whale's flat spear shaped head is like a battering ram with the weight of a locomotive behind it and powered by so much force that the whale can lift all that tonnage high enough to clear the surface. Looked like you already had him talked into lifting you so high so you could jump or dive from his head. He'd like that ! :-) Terry

I watched your other video and agree with some of those comments... she may have been thinking you were big limb-limited shrimps or funny-finned wrasses and wanted a grooming. She's probably going to pass along to the other whales that the grooming salon at that location isn't very skilled but cuddles are great. hehe

I was lucky enough to be a volunteer for a few weeks in 1995 with DOC and the Auckland Uni.... to record their behaviours off Vavaʻu.... number 5 group ....it will stay with me until I die. The scientists were odd lol. Yet Such an incredible creature, we witnessed full breaches, peduncle slaps, pec slaps, mating runs and did sound recordings of the males singing ...WOW! . Words are simply scratchings in the sand when we attempt to describe these stunning mammals ... A m8 and I even shared a special breach about 20 meters out from the reef we were standing on ....unforgettable!!! ;)

We all have to work harder to eradicate whaling. Its barbaric to hunt and kill these animals who so obviously have deep intelligence and emotional ability. They are truly beautiful creatures. We need to pressure our governments and support organisations like Sea Shepherd who work tirelessly to stop these animals being murdered by a certain Select few countries.

At 7.56 the whale winked at the cameraman, if thats not intelligence what is? We have to learn to communicate with whales and other wildlife before we can even hope to communicate with extraterrestials. I was working on a scallop boat years ago, I was working on deck when I noticed a big old turtle bobbing on the waves following us as we were slowly trawling along, when he got to the top of a wave he would poke his head up to see what we were doing ? He was there for at least an hour watching us. lol

I think she wanted the swimmers to take the barnacles off her. It's so sad that humans took advantage of their good nature and was attacked attacked for stupid things like their oil or their pooh and puke for saving perfume smells. Many of the whales numbers aren't increasing because human made their pod numbers so now they are easy pickings for the Orcas.
