Meet Nicholas Militello! Nick has been a dear friend of mine since waaaaay back to the early 2000s when we attended the University of Illinois's Theatre program together. Nick has been living and working in Los Angeles for the last 15+ years creating incredible screen content for the world's top performers including Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, and many more.
Join me as we take a closer look at Nick's "Command Center" approach to his edit bay and studio - hopefully you pick up a few pointers on how to improve your own post-production workflows!

Awesome tour Matthew, and great interview with Nick! I learned a lot as always thank you 👊My stereo speakers are actually JM Labs, which have Focal drivers and crossovers. Insane quality so those monitor speakers have got to be amazing in an edit bay like that.... Drooling! I need more actual monitors and really want monitor speakers now ;) I usually use my headphones, but it nice not having them on your head sometimes when you need to hear background noise for example. All the best, Jay

Great video. It's always fascinating listening to other pros talk about their approach to work and what they need at their fingertips to perform at their best. His point about what he gains in his personal life by investing heavily in his work equipment was very salient, reflecting my own aspirations for the last ten years. Would love to watch more of this kind of stuff. Again, great work!

I’ve been using a Thunderbay 8 with a 54TB RAID 0 (plus an old Thunderbay 4 as backup), and the OWC 4M2 with 8 TB ssd for about a month now, along with the base Ultra. It’s good to see my storage setup decision validated by this. As a solo creator, I realized a NAS was more complication and expense than I needed. Thanks for your work.
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
Same setup as Nick! Nice! I would love to take the OWC Thunderblade for a spin sometime. And I agree about the NAS...unless you need to access those files remotely fairly consistently, a NAS is a bit overkill for a solo creator. Thanks for watching, Jim!

Matthew, Another great video! Thank you for creating it. I’ve watched dozens of your videos and love the content you create- it’s both personal and professional and really inspiring. I also appreciate the varying levels of focus that your videos have. By that I mean that some videos are very niche (ie you made a Stream Deck for iOS demonstration video) versus another more general overview video where you discuss your new edit setup with your Mac Studio and display. One of my favorite topics that you’ve discussed in many videos is your software workflows and templates that you use. I’d love to see a video (apologies if you’ve already made it and I missed it) on Best Practices for Organizing one FCP Library to store a large amount of assets that you intend to use in multiple separate edits. For example- let’s say you have thousands of video files and tens of thousands of images and you want to organize those assets so that you can easily access them for editing. Would you create a colossal FCP library (and how would you organize your assets? Or would you store those assets in different databases? Currently in my workflow I have lots of text- scripts, notes, ideas etc (sorted in Evernote) and photos (sorted in Lightroom) and currently sort all of my videos just within a massive series of folders in Finder on my Mac. I’ve yet to find anything good for being able to organize the video assets (finder isn’t very good for tagging and you cannot set markers or sub clip like you can within FCP but worry about having an unwieldy FCP library). Naturally not asking you to solve my asset questions/ issues but wasn’t sure if others may be in a similar situation that would warrant a video on the topic. Just a suggestion of course :). Keep up the great work and love the articles on your Patreon!
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
Thanks so much for the kind words! As far as managing large libraries of, in essence, stock content goes? I think Final Cut is certainly a strong option for doing this. Something I didn't cover in this video is Nick's use of FCP for the exact same purpose. He has stock content libraries, sound effects libraries, etc. that are stored in a Final Cut Pro library. Is it the perfect solution? Perhaps not. But it's certainly a top contender. Let me know what you decide and thanks for your patronage (I really need to up my game there and get more content out - planning on starting this week with some fresh Patreon content!).

Very interesting query, and I agree on all kudos about Matt's channel. His relaxed and totally focused presenting style is calming , something that him and Rafael Ludwig have in common. So hey, back to the subject. I have a customer with returning projects and edits of an existing material, but we also film new stuff that I'll need to edit, so I'm keeping everything in the same library but group in events. I bring in the original footage although many advise against it but since I don't have more HDs than the internal and one fast externa, it'll have to do for the moment. i wish you and Rafael did a video or a livestream about this, like ”FCPX storage workflow for Muggles”… Thanks!

Cool to see TouchOSC. I used to use that for my DJ performances. I like the 3 monitor arrangement. I'd like to get there, but IDK which displays to get. I like that Nick seems to have two workhorse monitors and one reference monitor, probably connected with an UltraStudio. I also would like to move my NAS/Storage out of my office as it's pretty noisy. I'm curious how Nick connects to his storage and RAID if it's in another room.
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 6 месяцев назад
Nick has one RAID by his desk but it's quiet-ish. I think it's a big LaCie RAID. I believe he has a few older TB2 RAIDs, and he has a big, long Thunderbolt cable that he runs to it under the house. It was a *_very_* expensive cable.

Hi Matt, does he use that 43 curved tv to color correct and grade? I’m interested to get a new Monitor for my mac studio
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
No, Nick doesn’t really do any color correction and grading too extensively. We had all the grading scopes up because it looked cool. 😎 Most of the footage he gets from clients is from finished music videos, etc. And the 3D stuff he creates in Cinema4D doesn’t really get graded.

@Stairsgoup
@Stairsgoup 2 года назад
Hey Doug, I actually switch back and forth. I dont really do much extreme grading but I will use the BENQ to check final color to make sure nothing is crazy off. I like using the 43" curved for preview from time to time since its the biggest in the studio and most of my work will be going on an 80-100' wide LED wall so I try and get as much sense of the scale as possible. Thanks for watching and of course happy to answer anything.

It would be cool, sometimes we build big workstations as yours, but we’re limited because we are so used to the “small (just video basic cuts)” projects that we struggle when we want to do a more complex “big production style” project, for example; how to merge reasonable 3D effects, how to approach the auto design, how to store the projects efficiently… Lately I had been trying to merge Krita and blender into my After Effects/Premiere/Finalcut timeline. Kinda challenging because of the compatibility.
