Yes remember that! Think all of those ingredients like the coconut and spice mask the fish flavor enough. Blends so well together and then the banana leaf aroma. Delicious!
This channel will blow up one day! May it be as big as Food Ranger and Mark Wiens. One of Mark Wiens' favorite foods is tempoyak. He sure can eat a lot of them. The combination of tempoyak and budu is something out of this world. Sweet, salty, tangy and spicy with the bird eye chillies.
Thank you so much! Maybe in time - we will see. Thankful for viewers like you who watch and enjoy our videos 😁. Have seen his love for tempoyak and now I can understand why. That has to be an intense combo!
Wow! U guys really eat like d locals. No hesitation on tasting budu n tempoyak, few of authentic Malay table sauce beside sambal belacan. D crispy seafood, keropok leko look so scrumptious. D sata n pulut panggang look equally delicious.
Thank you! We are always willing to try something at least once. Really enjoyed the tempoyak and budu. The crispy seafood, sata and pulut panggang were all great!
@@FoodandFootprints Don't miss to try nasi dagang n nasi kerabu too. For me, nasi dagang from Terengganu is d best compared to d ones from Kelantan n Pahamg. Nasi kerabu is one of d kelantanese fav comfort food (with budu).
Yasin Affandi Yes! Had lots of fun with them. We didn’t even coordinate going to Terengganu at the same time and only realized it just before we left KL!
Once I went to a Malay restaurant and saw a whole buffet tray of tempoyak petai. I loaded my whole plate of white rice with it. My friend, let's call her A, elbowed me and advised "better not too much" 'cause I thought whatttttt can a whole plate of stink beans tempoyak (it's vegetarian) do to me. I can tell you this. It did a lot the next day.
😂😂😂😂 love the story. Can identify with that too on the second trip to Singgang Budu. Ate the tempoyak petai fish, then the owner came by and gave us a small container of it, which I demolished and gave us a big container of it to take with us, which I ate a lot of at night with dinner. The next day was...interesting. Can’t blame you at all for loading up your plate with it - such a flavor bomb!
The crunchy batter of seafood celup tepung, looks amazing 😍 No wonder many people love to visit the place! This makes us drooling at night almost bed time 😅
Dang! This is so authentic! I have lived here for almost 15 years now and has frequented Terengganu almost every year. I have never ever tried singgang budu. I heard of singgang before. But not singgang budu. You guys rock!
Damn dude the way u explain that whole pulut panggang situation was just spot on! That's how u know its done just right. I get hella annoyed whenever I get one without the crispy burnt bits😂
Thanks for introducing Sata to us! As a local we haven't even try so many amazing dishes in Malaysia haha!! The skewers look so beautiful over the grill! there's shredded coconut in there too? damn, sounds awesome. And that pulut panggang 😍😍😍
Our pleasure! And this place was so special out in the kampung with the sweet uncle and aunty. Another winner with coconut shells used for the fire like at Masthar
Ikan singgang is like our comfort food. It's simple to cook (less than 5 ingredients and cooks for 10minutes) and tasty and fulfilling enough eaten with hot steamy rice.. Pulut panggang (we call it pulut lepa) in the East Coast is slightly different from the West Coast in terms of the fillings..the West ones have shredded coconut as fillings.
Yo guys! Singang Budu looks a lot like a dish we tried in Indonesia and Philipines. From your description Greg sounds pretty similar to sinigang. Love that stuff so will most likely love this stuff too. Man Petai and Durian... that sounds like the ultimate flavour explosion for sure. Woooof stink beans grilled fish with that sauce insane, would love to try that. Dang greg totally demolished that prawn hahahaha. Love sata grilled over coconut husk def a lot like otak otak mmmmm what an epic food episode!
Yup it did have some similarities to sinigang. Loved all the fresh turmeric root it. That fermented durian petai combo was genius! Couldn’t get enough of it really. You have to try it!! Definitely demolished that prawn and the squid - soo crispy. Sata was incredible too - even ate some from a stall the other day by the jetty before going to the islands. Thanks a lot, guys!! 😁
The last thing you guys had from the banana leaf looks so similar to what our parents make too! but our parents put pork in it or sometimes jackfruit! looks so good tooo!
Actually here we call it a "singgang" .. 🤗 the basic ingredients only the turmeric garlic galangal and tamarind slice.. And normally we put some 'chili padi' + lady fingers.. Seem like easy right but mine singgang never taste like my mom's singgang😂😂
If you can find any restoran with ikan terubuk on the menu, you must try it. That fish very difficult to eat but so delicious. Ikan terubuk bakar (bbq). I forgot about Nasi Dagang. Just original only in terengganu.
12:53 for us malaysians, this scenery is normal, not even special..but this is what tourists are looking for, 'the vibes'. therefore, be proud of our country and the characteristics of our tradition
We loved our time there and meeting such a nice hospitable couple making delicious food. Especially for someone like me (Greg) coming from a big city, it is a special experience
Hey Greg and Jumi!! That's cool to see the food at this place!! We are definitely seafood lovers for sure. Siggnang Budu.. what amazing and flavorful looking dishes!! Anchovy is definitely salty!! We love that fish fry that you guys got, and all the other fried goodies!! YUM!! That fish in banana leaf... wow!! We love how many different ways food can be prepared and cooked!! Amazing food adventure and it was fun to see foods we have never heard of or tried before!! Much love to you guys and stay safe!
Bears and Butters Thank you so much! We really enjoyed making this episode and sharing the wonderful seafood here in Terengganu. It was the first time we tried many of these dishes and enjoyed them. Hope you two stay safe as well!
AWWWH maaaan that tempoyak petai looks so good!!! We've never tried it before too, a rare dish! OMG your reaction to that tempoyak petai... I'm even more sold haha!!
Food is so irresistible in Malaysia. So far, you guys are very adventurous. Trying all kinds of food from all places and even a road side stall or warung. Take care and follow the SOP.
You guys ventured out real local in KT. hahah came back for fermented durian paste, must be REALLY good!! Got me all curious about it! "we got everything" haha no holding back. the warung is busyyy! Broooo you are savage just diving in straight for the fish head LOL The last place is streetfood to the max, simple setup and looks like great food!
Yeah! Especially the last spot that was way out in the kampung area. We were worried there wouldn’t be any Grab available to get to our next spot 😂 The fermented durian paste with petai was insanely delicious!! You gotta try it next time you come to Malaysia. Haha when the menu is that short, we may as well order everything. 😂😂😂 savage!
I lived in Terengganu but i only go warung Pok Nong just once in my lifetime.. Because the queue is sooo long like everyday.. The best place to eat celup tepung dish among other warungs..
@@FoodandFootprints my family n i planned to go pok nong but there's too many people so we decide to eat celup tepung at warung near the pok nong's.. They sell kerang(cockles).. It just beside the beach so after eat there we took some selfies at the beach hahaha.. Also other warung for celup tepung is Ikan Celup Tepung Teluk Ketapang near the airport.. If you r lucky you might hv a horse ride but idk if it is available during this pandemic (MCO/PKPP)
Actually, we usually eat budu with 'ulam'.. its like traditional salad.. all types of ulam e.g pegaga, ulam raja, daun jambu.. or even cucumber. And then we eat the ulam + budu with rice.. Btw, very nice video and thanks for introducing my beloved hometown to the world 😊😍
Good to know! We will have some ulam and budu together sometime then. Can imagine it being a nice combination too. Thank you so much! Happy you enjoyed the video. We loved Terengganu and hope more people can experience the wonderful hospitality, vibe and food here
Food and Footprints- Greg and Jumi thank you! Just to add a bit more info.. Ulam is very good.. Its the secret of our ancestors to keep fit and some say for anti aging too.. 😁
Waa you guys in Kelantan right now. Dont forget to try Kelantan authentic dishes Nasi Kerabu with daging bakar/ ayam bakar. Also dont forget to try Ayam percik. For Kuih you should try akok. Nasi Kukus try one stall near the stadium 'Suriani Nasi Kukus' 😋😋😋
woaa the budu - fermented anchovy greg :D loves it.. goodness me - i bet the flavours must be quick hit - Yes man eat that petai :D - we love it, just when you pass gas :> make sure you arent in an elevator haha
Oh man you guys should definitely try - sooo good! Totally agree! Bet PR has a bunch of great seaside shacks like that. Gotta love fried seafood done right!
If you guys haven’t, you guys can try eat tempoyak cooked with petai and tapioca shoots (locals call this dish as “pucuk ubi masak lemak tempoyak petai”). It goes really well with a plate (or more) of hot white rice 🤤
sorry that i'm late to yr channel.. totally great & thorough review on the food.. great job u guys.. to jumi, please continue to make remarks if there is any kind similarities between malay food here to yours in philippines.. i'm intrigue to know more the similarities in food or culture since we (malaysian malays & philippinos) comes from the same austronesian heritage.. thanks in advance.. take care & stay safe.. happy adventures..
No need to apologize - we are glad you found us! Thank you very much for the kind words and compliments. Will definitely continue to make remarks about similarities to food in the Philippines. We’ve noticed plenty. Hope you stay safe too
NICEEEE you guys are back second time!! Ohw man, that petai on the grilled fish!! I'm salivating!!😍😍😍 Your description is just mindblowing good as the dish itself! I can almost taste it!
Haha we couldn’t resist! So glad we went back for that grilled fish - so worth it! Owner is so cool and even gave us a container of tempoyak petai to take with us! Aww thanks, guys!
Yesss we loved it too with the graffiti logo and art of the main dishes on the wall. So cool! 😂😂😂 that spicy fermented durian stinkbean paste has so much flavor that it dominates the fish
@@FoodandFootprints make sure to look for patin tempoyak in Temerloh, durian in Raub, Lemang To'ki in Bentong and if you are able to found any sambal hitam belimbing in any district in Pahang, do try it. Kuantan is beach city sort of like Miami i don't know maybe. Ikan bakar petai. Slurrp!
Rendang comes from the Minangkabau fishermen bringing it to Melaka on the west coast from Sumatra, so you can imagine that there is cross-pollination of food between the east coast and the Philippines.
Wow that fish wrapped in banana leaves grilled by coconuts.. first I've seen that.. would love to try it one day! ❤ great episode guys! Seafood heaven!
Ooohhhhh...... Mann...... Greg and Jumi....... U not even left me some tempoyak...... How hungry am I, went I looks both of u eat seafood with tempoyak and budu in Terengganu..... Yeah...... of course your stamoch are full with delicious delight.....
I remember Mark Wiens tasting tempoyak and saying its probably his favorite food in the world! You also got to go to Sarawak and try Sarawak Laksa. Anthony Bourdain rated it his favorite breakfast food. He even called it "Food for the Gods"!
Haha we can see why he said that. Even better with the petai. We would love to go to Sarawak - definitely on our list in the near future. We tried Sarawak Laksa in KL a few times and loved it. Can only imagine how good it must be in Sarawak
@@FoodandFootprints This is the only video around about Anthony Bourdain trying the Sarawak Laksa facebook.com/makansine/videos/tribute-to-anthony-bourdain-laksa-sarawak/436981280046378/ And this is the shop he ate in Choon Hui Cafe 34, Jalan Ban Hock, 93100 Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia +60 82-243 857 g.co/kgs/r93rTK
next time if you challenge singgang and budu in Pahang, just try them without other lauk. Ikan singgang, budu, tempoyak, petai/ulam2, plain grilled fish and only white rice, these are perfect harmony. Budu you need to squeeze lime, onion and cili padi. Then you put tempoyak inside it and you dip them with the fish from ikan singgang or any plain grilled fish. Petai and ulam also need to dip in budu first then you eat them with rice that coated by ikan singgang soup. Adding other lauk will disturb this balance. Enjoy your videos so much, dont mind if they are longer than 15 minutes :)
Wopi Appreciate the suggestions on how to order and eat them - sounds like a great combination. Thank you so much! Glad you enjoy the videos. Sometimes we make longer videos, but we feel around 15 minutes is a nice length
Haha will try anything at least once! As far as Malaysia, I’ve liked everything, but of course some things more than others. We love the diversity here too - one of the big things that makes this country special
