Watch the video, I wasn't expecting these results! This antenna was given to me several years ago by my buddy "Seven Five Double Zero" He has since passed away.
A base load typically offers a higher TOA (Take Off Angle - or Angle of Radiation) so usually better for short DX skip, a higher coil (Center or Top loaded) will offer a lower angle which is better for local work, not to mention the 1/2 wave null/peak meaning where you park can be 9' from a peak and in a null where you can lose several S-units. You basically would have to be in contact over the phone or FM rig and slowly roll directly toward or away from the receiving station while transmitting so they could watch the analog meter and tell you when you're at the peak with each antenna. I built one similar to your center loaded coil and it is superior to both the Sirio & Wilson 5000s, but it has a full 6' whip and that's locally, up to 80mi. On DX they vary, depending upon from how far the DX is rolling in. You could get even more radiation efficiency if you were to compress the coils down to only 3.5 - 4 turns and bring their wrap half that distance apart, then increase the whip length to tune. Mine is 3.5T x 3.5"d x 4.5" spread + 75" top & whip. 73
Best antenna I ever used on CB were the 102" stainless steel whips. I used military grade coax that I bought at an auction at Ft. Carson, Colorado. I could throw over a 1000 watts through it with no problem. On sideband I talked with all 50 states, and every country in the western hemisphere. Hit Europe and Australia several times. CHEERS from Colorado
If you see this I need to mag mount a 102 inch steel with with a ground plane kit outside my window 4 stories up. It's going on a metal roof. What magnet mount can I get for the antenna. I'm having so much trouble trying to figure this out.
No, I didn't know what kind of antenna it was until someone left a comment about it. The antenna is called a Striker made by Striker CB shop in Oklahoma City, but no longer in business.
Great video, thanks for sharing! For what it's worth the location is drastically different. Even tough the goofy antenna does have an advantage with a higher coil, it also has a huge advantage because of antenna placement. Having the antenna right in the middle of the roof will provide the best ground plane an antenna needs so the signal can radiate powerfully in all directions. The other permanent mounted antenna will send much weaker signals towards the front of the vehicle than signals heading out towards the back.
@@rockerforlife194 On my SUV I have it mounted where the Sirio is on yours and get better performance toward the front and rear equally, by comparison to the sides. The front length, including the engine cover, work as a counterpoise.
What are the odds....I installed a predator 10k on my truck yesterday. I do think I'm going to fab up a multi spring mount for it. I tried a heavy duty barrel spring and it doesnt cut it. Looks good bud, nice install.
I am Not surprised I never cared for the siro antenna I had an antenna that looked like that one you are testing One from mid to late 80's that Pre-dates the Mobile penetrator antennas and looks like what you are using to experiment with ( that I picked up at a cb shop in NJ) And man... it Destroyed all K40's all Wilson antennas etc And sounded loud ( but clear ) and Proud
I use a Stryker mag mount on my Chevy Silverado and it seems to work pretty good for the most part. I might mount a hood fender and try between the two. Great video
I bought an antenna that looks just like that in Mexico for about 5$. The small k40 I had on my truck wasn’t working that well so the guy said buy this it will out perform yours so I tried it with absolutely no tuning and it worked better than the k40 I was in awe .
I had the same experience with a similar triple mag mount setup. I ended up selling it to a buddy. It was not practical to run on the roof of a pickup. Best mobile antenna ive used! -Station 18
I realize this is kind of an old video now but you need to know that if you roll a few feet you'll either find a null or a peak to whatever station you're talking. So if let's say you roll three feet and he hits his maximum on your meter of S-8 and then you roll another quarter wave either direction forward or back directly toward him or directly away from him you will see it drop several S units on your meter because you've rolled into the halfwave null and then you can roll another quarter wave 9 ft and you'll be back up to the peak and you can keep doing this for miles! if you're going to run antenna tests you have to find the peak sweet spot for each antenna to the station that you're testing to, otherwise you could be in the peak on one and the null on the other and you'll never have any idea how they really compare, in fact I did it once and found that the worst antenna was stronger, and that's how I learned about the halfwave peaks and nulls. 73
I came here from your tilt antenna mast video. I wanted to see just how you got it to the ground. I went to look at one today for $100. It's old and I think the best way to lower safely would be to replace the wire rope on the crank before attempting anything. It should lower easily? One-man operation?
Last year I had what I believe a 22 inch shaft. If not 27. It was Huge. It was single coil. I had it mounted on the bottom bracket of the mirror on my 379. Angled out about 45 degrees. I had a galaxy 98VHP hooked up to it. I would sit in the field during harvest with my truck off. 20 miles from the interstate. Hear their conversations clear as bell. Man with the 200 watts the galaxy was pushing out. She talked with that antenna. Goofy looking antenna, but man do they perform. Later during harvest another farmer pulled out onto the road with an auger hooked to his tractor. Rival farmer that didn’t like our farm.. anyway.. took the ditch instead slamming into the tractor. Scratched the hell out of the cab on the trees and bent the antenna all the way back into a 90 degree angle. That was the last of that fun. I can’t wait to get another one here soon for my new setup.
Yeah of course it will.Because the coil is higher up on the antenna.Base loaded are the lowest.Than mid coil loaded,,than top loaded.Tops are the better over all. But top heavy.Usually fiberglass come top loaded. Wait until you take off the Sirio.than retest it again!!! It should be outstanding!!! Commander 105 said it,with the wave!!!! Just take the wip off the Sirio, leave the base on should be ok. wont interfere. Oh did I tell you??? I have one!!!! Hahaha Oh and leave it exactly where it is on top of the truck.Right in the middle. One more thing, I run mine with a small tear drop on the top of the wip.Adds capacitance and more performance too.Attaches with a set screw.Get them on Ebay,or check out Gunny Pucks web site.
@Victor Galag... Thank you. It's just as simple as you stated. The load being much higher helps the antenna perform better. But people still complain about the aesthetics. I guess they don't want maximum performance.
I have to say yes it looks outrageous... I run one of those myself. And it works great... the only antenna that worked better for me was a 6 ft skipshooter top load... but it can’t handle the power like my 10k can handle... so I just run my open coil center load 10k... yes they work very well.
@@Fox250R as long as you are not running over 7-800 watts the 5.5 Francis is going to work very well. It’s a top load so there is a different angle of radiation vs a center load which is what the 10k is…
102 inch whip is the best. this is a center loaded antenna with a hi q coil. second best. the problem with 102 inch whips is when they are center mounted on the roof getting under things. you have a great set up. it will clear most overheads and gets the benefit on being in the center of the roof.
Try the European bottom loaded Sirio P5000, it's head and shoulders above the A10 or any 1o2' whip. Import charges suck I know, but I know several long haulers who have nought them & not looked back.
There is no way an antenna with a loading coil in it is better than a 102" whip.. Its a 1/4 wave antenna. Your sirio is making up for the length in its coil which is has loss.
@@burnstudios I use a tank whip (9ft) for Dx when stationary, I believe the P5000 is 165 or 185cm, I noticed the difference in middle loaded & bottom last year & asked, many didn't even realise there was 1 for each market EU & US, o guess you never know if you don't experience it 1st hand.
Well if you would have watched and listened to the video you would have known that I didn't know who made this antenna at the time of making this video. Since I've made this video a subscriber has let me know that it was originally made by the striker CB shop in Oklahoma city. However they are no longer in business and this antenna has not been produced in years as I found out. So it's a pretty rare antenna and I'm happy to have it and unfortunately you can't buy this one anymore.
@@vegasfordguy I did hear you say you dont know and the conclusion is still the same if you can recommend me a mobile CB antenna what is it? Im using a 102 inch steel whip which you know is long and very noticeable. Im thinking about a Predator comp antenna?
So I have the Tram 3 mag set up and when I put it on top of my work truck with a monkey antenna it made so much wind noise that you couldn’t stand to drive over 45 mph. So I switched the antenna to a k40 style like you talked about and it did the same thing. I put the k40 on my dads T300 kenworth service truck and he said he thought a bearing was going out on it, till he figured out it was the antenna. I bought a Mr Coily antenna and am gonna give it a try again. Hope I can get it to work. I know it’s gotta be better than than my Stryker mag mount.
Test a GR 45, and a Stryker. That "big Goofy" antenna, in the 29 mile rest sounded the worse, compared to the other three. Maybe 10 miles is it's limit, sound quality wise.
Not a big power handler but a damn good antenna I’ve ran a Texas star 400 thru one and it held up just fine could talk around the world and local just fine no problems Larson makes a lot of antennas and was mostly used on cop cars and ham very good antennas but like said not 1k power handling like most but who has or needs 1k plus in a mobile anyways unless your hard core
Those penetrator's will handle up to 2 kw. Work will with a good amp. The antenna is made by the same company that makes all the rest of them. Serio Antenna company of Italy. They have brought back the old hill billy 5/8 ground plane and star duster as will as many of the older antenna designs from the late 60's to early 70's.
I thought it was a predator (10k) meaning 10k watts handling... And are you saying they are made in Italy? I’ve been to Kel’s (predator antenna) shop in Bethesda Tx.
What is the name of that antenna? Also I'm surprised you could run a magnetic antenna with your DX959. Mine did not work. Spoke with Galaxy and they said its because the 959 has a non grounded floating chassis (?). Unless you ground the magnetic antenna it will not work all the time..hmmm.
