A suggestion: early ice is a riot- sometimes so clear you can see to the bottom! We've even found frogs in hibernation on the bottom. One thing we ALWAYS had with us was a 8-10" pole- if you do drop through, the pole carried crosswise is something is something that can stop your drop . Also, a pair of icepicks worn on a leather thong can be used to help crawl out. the poles can also be used to extend to help pull someone out! Voice of experience! The singing is expansion of water freezing on a still lake, or the change of the ice crystal when when your are walking on it. Fun to stress test the strength. Congrats on staying dry and for finding opportunity to enjoy- a life memory!

I will NEVER forget the first time I heard the ice make that noise. It was late at night, dead calm, on a huge lake (lake Champlain) and we walked out onto the ice. We started to hear that freaky sound from the ice, with a little snow cover, from a distance. It suddenly started to happen again and again, getting closer and closer, until it cracked right under our feet. My friend and I both ran for shore as fast as we could. 😀 We didn’t go out again till we saw a game warden on his quad, and he explained what was going on.

Black ice = pure enjoyment. No rink, no olympic oval can compare. A thin steel blade meeting the glassy ice hisses beneath your boots as you glide freely in the open air. Well, thank goodness for Noah and friends who shared their adventure. It brought back fond memories. Sadly, for many of us we no longer experience the extended winters of old where ice skating was a common occurrence . Thanks for posting.

One of pure joys of winter, SKATING!!! Sadly here in MA with global warming, not much pond or lake skating to be had anymore which is heartbreaking. Can't get over the conditions you had here and oh that sound....!!! Much appreciation for sharing 🙂

You really should bring basic long-distance safety gear with you. Ice-prods, ice-pike, throwing line and a flotation devise (you can use a backpack with a "groin-strap, that way you can bring spare clothes).

Wow! So glad I live in Yarmouth County! Still green and all water open! Long live Nova Scotia’s banana belt! You can keep the ice. ;)
