Northern Scavenger is a platform to share stories from our backcountry adventures in Canada’s wild places. With our content we hope to provide practical information, promote sustainable use of our backcountry, and entertain along the way.
We have huge tracts of Crown Land in Northern Ontario, some leased out by folks who hunt or fish in season. There you will find very rustic cabins that are used as shelters much like in Nova Scotia i.e.never locked, equipped with wooden bunk beds, a stove, table and a few cupboards and travelers are free to make use of them temporarily when trekking/canoeing. On a canoe trip with some mates, we portaged along a pathway between rivers and used one such shelter to eat our midday meal out of the rain. This one had a cupboard with a door that had not quite been closed. Leading from the cupboard was a trail of white powder that ran across the floor. Scattered through the trail from the cupboard we discovered a half dozen or so wee dead mice laying on their backs with what looked like puffy white mushrooms protruding from their stomachs. Turns out the last hunting party had left a box of instant just-add-water mashed potato mix and one corner of the box chewed away. The poor little mice looked kind of like hors d'oeurves that had fallen off of a platter. It was a bizarre sight!
Why don’t you brew coffee at home and dehydrate it into breakable sheets like someone did with pasta sauce on your Labrador trip. Not sure if it’s possible but worth a try.
Man… the sound of those peepers brings back childhood nostalgia. I love everything about these videos, and I appreciate how knowledgeable you are about the land and environment. Thanks, Noah! Keep up the great work.
What a beautiful landscape and adventure! You captured everything you described perfectly. Very immersive, vivid, and well done! Your videos get better with each release. Making sure I got that notification bell turned on for your Ontario-Manitoba adventure! Can't wait!
Noah and others. I live in the Caribbean. Did live in Nova Scotia and London , Ont. for a few years and loved it. These adventures make me homesick and I am along with you all virtually as is everyone watching. I just binged on the Labrador trip with Alex, Chris and Dave when you got really ill. I recommend taking along a bottle of Angostura bitters. It’s small. But add a teaspoon to some water will sort you out in a day. I totally recommend it. Try it at home first if you like. Now, I want to ask , Are you all employed by Northern Scavenger or do they sponsor you or is it your business? Very curious. You MUST have sponsors for those long trips surely.

I'm guessing the circling birds were turkey vultures. I live in NB and we have a lot of them here, and you see them circling like that often. I grew up in NS fishing spots like that. Brings back great memories.
Great video, Noah! The rivers were teaming with Gaspereaux this spring. Funny story... when I was working in Yarmouth one spring, all of the folks from Tusket were talking about going kayaking every evening. After a few conversations, I realised they were fishing for Kiack, another name for Gasperaux. Unfortunately, I didn't make more paddling friends! 😂
Noah, another great trip. Loved the camera work. I don’t know how you do it. Very cool to see the number of fish going up river. Looking forward to your trip with Rachel! The big reveal! Oh, you dog you, I know !!!
Once again Noah you brought vicariously on that wonderful journey. Watching you is meditative. Good travels for your upcoming journey with Rachel. PS love the Merlin App as well.
❤ that was amazing to see all those fish thanks for taking underwater Shots just love it all Noah ,im so Thankful you took us along❤ cant wait for the big trip post, you and Rachel be safe out there
Thanks for taking us along on this adventure! Beautiful country!!! I'm going to guess "The French River" for your 18 day trip from Ontario to Manitoba. :) I love camping on the French River.
You are such a skilled canoeist and water navigator but I’m finding watching your fish handling a bit disturbing with all the dropping etc. hope you get a net and spend less time with fish in the air gulping. The mass of fins weaving around in spawning mode was amazing.
great late spring adventure, and uplifting to see Noah's thoughtful appreciation of the plant/insect/fish/eagles/etc life cycles...easy to look past that stuff but it's right there for all to see if we just take the time to look 😊
Another beautiful video, Noah; thank you. In my tripping days, I always traveled light, but can recommend a reflector oven. I’ve baked grayling, specs, and lake trout all without carbonizing the fish. It’s also great for bannock, date bars, and other breadstuffs. Also, if your Ontario-Manitoba trip brings you close to Rainy Lake, give a shout. I’ll heat the sauna!
Great video, Noah! I really enjoyed this interesting trip and the fish, birds and eagles. Very cool to see NS backcountry streams, woods and wildlife. I'll be looking for you and Rachel's big trip. TY!
