Would be interesting to interpret the bark "language" ... Maybe a biologist in this field would be able to shed light. A bit of "Little Red Riding-hood" came to mind! Haha!
Well, I have a BSc in Animal Biology and my strongest subjects were in evolutionary and behavioural ecology, so let's give this a listen... Right; If that is indeed a wolf- and given the pattern of barking and the area, it certainly sounds like one, as a domestic dog wouldn't bark quite the same way for so long in the middle of the woods- that's likely a wolf alarm barking. The wolf probably spotted, heard, or smelled you long before you heard them, and they're alerting the rest of the family that you're in the area. That's just my interpretation based on listening to other samples of wolf barks and the contexts they happened in, at the very least. What an awesome experience though, and thank you for sharing it!
Shared it with a wolf biologist with FWP. She said I likely came across a pack with new pups and as you mentioned, the wolf on me was barking alerts. Amazing enough, it was pretty windy, the wolf came from the low side of the gated / closed road and hopped onto the road approx 7 yards in front of me. We were both surprised and it seemed we stared at each other for a heck of a long time, (likely only a few seconds though felt a good while). He wasn't aggressive. He turned and did a slow trot about 20 yards down the road and routed up the other side, into the thick brush you see in the video. I had my rifle and sidearm (Spring bear hunting). During our brief moment starring at each other, I slowly attempted to remove my phone from my chest pouch to video... This was the best I could get by the time all was said/done. Thanks for your input. Was one heck of an experience!
