Imagine the scene .... An old man is walking his dog down the old trackway through the fields of Perthshire, head down against the cold and blustery weather, when above the noise of the wind he hears whooping and shouts ... he looks up and see's over in the middle of the next field, in the distance an adult male leaping and laughing and crying and shouting "hammered !! hammered !!" as the wild scottish wind swirls about him ... the old man and his dog look at each other with a sigh... they know how many whiskey bottle tops they see strewn about ...😊

Oh wow. Just wow. When I saw the stars on the back of the coin, I felt my own heart racing! and Alexander too, incredible!!! If you find anything better in this field I'll eat my hat. Even the pompom. Would love to know where it was minted.

In researching the silver hammered coin it looks to have 23 points ( on reverse side three 6 point stars and one 5 point mullet) which would mean it was minted in Aberdeen.

Hi John, the Scottish coin is from Alexander JIM deck d climate 1280 - 86, the first coinage, from 1250 onwards had an open cross (2 lines per arm). Well done!!! I have always had an interest in Allexander III, what a pivotal time for Scotland - and you can hold it in your hand. Congratulations.

I was told by a metal detectorist who detects the Oregon trail often, that we find drawer pulls and other furniture fixtures along roads where they would have been moved by wagon. The jostling of the horse drawn wagon evidently oftentimes broke these off.

Hi John, I think the lead disk with the two holes might be a whirligig, two stings would be past through the holes and it would then be twisted and when you pull the strings apart it causes the disk to whirl. The smaller holes would then create a lined pattern when spinning and the teeth on the outer edge would cause the disk to make a whirling noise when it’s going round. Always enjoy your videos on both channels, congrats on the Scottish hammered.

The coins are amazing, I've never seen an old Scottish coin before, but I think the most interesting thing is that lead artifact. It looks hand made, I think it's pretty old. You should try non-nitrile mechanics gloves, they're similar to medical gloves but usually 6 mil or so thick, so they're a little more rugged. They will keep the wind off your hands when it's cold, they're not insulated but will keep the water off too.

The man looks spiffy! 👍 And congrats on the finds. How cool, that you found this hammered Scottish coin. To imagine how long it has lain in the ground, and who may have been the last person before you to touch it... Also, funny to think about how so many knobs seem to be lost. Maybe someone was moving and had a chest of drawers on a horse wagon, hit a pothole, and the shifting furniture caused a knob to break off...? 😅

The 1920 was the first year of 50% Silver, BUT the 1920 is a rarer year than many others, (rarest of those made from 1911-1920). so it's still a good find, because what it lacks in silver, it gains in rarity!

That is an awesome day of detecting. I know you have been hoping for a Scottish hammered coin for some time, and you finally got one! The copper coin is also very nice, considering most have no detail left. All I can think of for the lead with the fancy edges is that it looks like some type of decorative surround for a knob or pull, if such things were ever made of lead. I hope the great finds continue to come. Cheers from Texas.
