Guitar cover of Incubus - Pardon Me.
The song that pushed Incubus to a much larger audience. One of my absolute favourite tracks that just rocks from start to finish and has some really nice use of effects. I'd love to know how Mike recorded this one as the intro/verse sound is so smooth - my sound on this one is more a kin to his live sound than the recorded version. Pardon Me is an absolute classic by the band and I hope I have done it some justice!

Mike's use of pedals is extraordinary - the way he creates different textures within the music is incredible. He's no slouch though, the tail end of the solo for sick sad little world gets pretty lively 😁

Yeah, that’s an art form in itself! I’ve found it’s best to think ahead so turn on the phaser as you’re playing the last part of the chorus and then quickly add the delay and switch back to a clean sound. I do have a lesson for pardon me too which is more up to date - I’m playing some things slightly wrong in this cover 😅 Thanks for watching!

my respect man. I remember playing this song with my band around 2003 having no clue how to get that sound. Ended up buying a phaser, compressor and delay and that was all I needed to get close to the sound. Was hard by that time to find tabs even. This could have save me tons of money and headaches but I still love those times were everything was kinda hidden and you have to actually put the effort to look for that sound. Interesting times and one of the best times of my life.

I know what you mean - there’s a great learning curve and innocence to the trial and error before so much information was up online. I think that’s a condition of being older, we always look back with fond memories of these things. These days, the thrill for me is trying to see how accurate I can get. Take this video for example, I recorded it a few years back now and I have learnt a lot since then and would approach Pardon Me totally differently now 😁. Plus, you can always ignore videos and information like this and just do your own thing like back in 2003 😊. Thanks for watching!

Awesome cover and effects. I used to think that all the guitar swells/effects was Kilmore. But then, I learned that those sounds were Mike. I was like, "So, what's Kilmore doing?!" Then I learned that Kilmore adds in background vocals and other subtle things when he's not scratching.

@@Fitzgerd i was able to get close to the sound using your tips. I’m using a digital multi effects pedal (mooer ge100) and the only thing I haven’t figured out yet are the phaser settings and the volume swells. But your video is a really big help! So, thank you!!!!

Nice one! The phaser sound is going to be tricky with a multi effects pedal but I wish you good luck and you should be able to find a sound that gets you close 👍🏻🤘🏻🎸

Just gotta practice more to lessen my transition times between the drive-powered chorus effect and phaser-thick intro/verse effects. Again, this is all thanks to your guide!!! Also do you think I could nail down this sound from morning view on a plug in or maybe organically using like a BOSS me80 or gt100? Im so excited now to start learning this stuff! I've been playing for maybe 16 17 years. I really only play tech death metal and some indie sounding stuff. I have a very deftonesy/incubus "science" era vibe to my sound outside metal so this has me so stoked. Earned a life long sub! Thanks Joel, I really appreciate that! Hmmm I'm not entirely sure with multi effects units and plugins as I've always just used amps and pedals. From doing some research for other people that have asked similar questions, I think the thing multi units don't have or struggle with is the Boss PH-2 phaser sound. This is such a huge part of Mike's sound, especially for volume swell stuff on Make Yourself and Morning View etc. Not saying it's impossible, I've just never had experience of trying to use those options to get similar sounds to Mike's playing. In the future, I'd love to do a video on this as a lot of people use multi effects units and plugins and would be a fun experiment! Thanks for watching and all the kind comments my friend! 😁👍🏻🤘🏻

I’ve just re-read your message - if I had to choose certain pedals I would go with, the Boss PH-2 super phaser, a delay pedal (one that doesn’t just stop when you turn the pedal off), an MXR Phase 90 and a reverb pedal. With these pedals, you can play a huge number of incubus songs. That’s assuming your overdrive/distortion is coming from your amp, otherwise a good drive pedal is essential too 👍🏻. I hope that helps? No problem at all 😊. Absolutely, starting with these ‘core’ effects will get you a long way and then you can always pick up a different pedal whenever you can/want to in the future. His board is very daunting if you don’t have these pedals and I’ve been adding to mine since I was around 18 (I’m almost 34 now 😅) so a ton of my pedals are years old now! Have fun building your board my friend! 😁🤘🏻

Hey, thanks for watching. I'm not 100% sure as I don't own a PH-3 but from seeing demos of the pedal, I think your best bet would be 10 stage for the mode 1 PH-2 type sounds and the 12 stage for the mode 2 PH-2 tones. That is just a guess so have a play around and see how it sounds my friend! 😁🤘🏻👍🏻🎸

Great Content, I loved it. I just want to ask if I can only use an MXR Phase 90 and a Boss DD-3 or Can you recommend any other delays that I can use to make that sound, Please? I'm a Big Incubus fan and Pardon me is one of their great songs.

Hey, firstly thanks for watching 😀👍🏻. Second, the delay doesn't really matter - any delay pedal will get you where you need to be with some playing around. The phaser is very important, it needs to be a boss PH-2 (which is discontinued) or failing that a boss PH-3 which will sound slightly different, but as close as you'll get without the PH-2. The phase 90 is purely used as an embellishment in the chorus and to play the main parts of the song, isn't the most important pedal. I hope that that helps?

@@Fitzgerd Wow, Thank you so much for the response. I'm a Big Fan of Incubus and really loved Mike Einziger, He's a Genius. So basically, I needed any delay, Phaser (Ph2) and a good chorus pedal, correct?

No problem. To play most songs, you'll need a delay pedal, a PH-2 and an MXR phase 90. He uses a chorus pedal on a few other songs but if you have those other 3 pedals, you can play a lot of Incubus songs 👍🏻

I have an Orange Crush 35RT amplifier. I know the song is Standard tuning. What should I make my settings on my Orange crush amplifier to get this exact sound? I don't have any pedals though. My Guitar is an ESP LTD EC-1000 Deluxe. I just can't get the exact tone on my amplifier. Its set to dirty if i have it on clean thats more of an acoustic guitar sound.

Hey, I think you’ll struggle to get the overdrive tone with the sound coming out of the 10” speaker. You may find the tone is better with the 4x12 cab emulation the amp has? You’ll probably need headphones for this. I would use the neck pickup with bass around 12 o’clock, the mid at around 11 o’clock and the treble around 1 o’clock and see how that sounds. You can dial back or add as you feel you need from there 👍🏻

Hey I'm just researching Mike's heavy distortion I know all the other tricks haha. Are you emulating his sound with ds1 or are you saying that's actually the pedal he used for his heavy distortion sounds? Thanks, love incubus so much.

Hey! For this video, I was emulating Mike's distortion the best I could with my amp and the DS-1 at the time. As far as I know, Mike mainly relies on his Mesa's for his distortion sound, but live I think I'm right in saying that he uses some kind of overdrive before his amp to add a little more hair at times. I'm pretty sure the DS-1 used to be used just before his amp a few years back but think the overdrive he uses now has changed. The studio version is a whole different thing and he could have been using anything to get those recorded tones! Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

I’m not too sure what you mean I’m afraid? The RV-3 is the delay pedal that’s used in this song and it’s used in the intro, verses and bridge before the last chorus. Hope that helps?!

As a general rule, I like to have the gain at about 2 o’clock, add some bass, take out some mids and add a bit of treble 👍🏻

@@Fitzgerd cool. I just wanna ask, did you record everything in one go? I was watching a live of Pardon Me where Mike was doing the same thing as you but I can't quite get the E ambient. In the video, you seem to be stroking down and get to the knob as fast as you can

I record the guitar part 4 times essentially as I only have one camera and then edit it all together as a performance. I'm not sure what you mean by the E ambient!? Which part of the song is that and what's causing you problems?

@@Fitzgerd sorry I wasn't clear. In the intro and bridge where you swell the high E and B strings. The gap is just so small I can't pull it off

No worries. Ah I see, yeah that is a tricky slide while still keeping up the volume swells. Best advice I can give is start slow. Play at a speed where you can play the whole intro without stopping and it being in time and then once that becomes comfortable, start increasing the speed and you'll get there. Just sitting practicing the volume swell technique alone will help too. Once it becomes second nature to your right hand, the speed and coordination with your left hand will develop fairly quickly.
