Snapshots are point in time backups of a container that can be used to roll back a container to a state when the backup was made. Incus Snapshots are stored inside of a container and make the container larger. Incus Snapshots are functionally equivalent to LXD Snapshots, but the commands are different.

Very interesting, and seems to be useful in a lot of instances

I can see that i need to use a second system for testing, but I detest change, and am looking for a way to use other systems on my local network just as if I was sitting in front of them with my displays and keyboard and mouse. I use a keyboard that was manufactured in the late 80's, a Northgate Omnikey 102, which has the function keys where they belong, on the left in of the keyboard so my pinky finger knows all of the shortcuts, and of course has a separate number and arrows section, not to mention weighing in at about 4 pounds or so, maybe more, it is not going to get dropped or pushed off of anything by an adventurous cat or something. I really hate that MS had such a stranglehold on the industry that they prevailed upon keyboard makers to add a "Windows" key. I can never remember the actual keystroke represented by that key, and since it appears in millions of places in tutorials and installation procedures, it is quite annoying, to say the least. But, I digress! My thoughts on the snapshots is that they would be very handy to use to make images of a basic incus container build to the point before you add anything application specific to the container. It would shorten the process to load that image already configured with the ubuntu server, the updates, and more importantly the programs you and I always want to add, like curl, net-utils, nano, etc.

You are referring to the act of "publishing" an image which can either be done from a snapshot or from an existing container. Images then can be used to create new containers as a starting point and they are very helpful for that.

@@scottibyte Thanks for the reply, Scott. sometimes in the heat of the moment while making a comment I disremember the details of what I was attempting to specify.

What would be your recommended way to make a full backup of a incus container to be stored externally? Assuming the process would be repeated every x days or so.

You would have to use the "Incus export" command which creates a tar.gz file that can be imported to another industry server and is completely external. Be aware that snapshots greatly enlarge an export file since they are a part of the container.

@@scottibyte Thanks, I think I saw that command in one of your videos, the Incus content you're providing is a godsend.
