What will really blow your mind... The Wright Brothers first flew on December 17th, 1903. As the movie displayed, the Apollo crew landed on the moon on July 20th, 1969. That means, humankind went from no powered flight of any sort, essentially being completely ground-bound...to leaving our world and landing on another, in just 66 years. A child that might've gotten to see the Wright brothers' first flight, could've watched with their grandchildren as Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon. We got that far, in a single generation. That's the technological equivalent of an infant running and winning an Olympic Decathlon the day after they learn to walk. That was six decades ago. Look how little we've accomplished since then, by comparison. Same amount of time, and all we've really managed now is a barely functional internet that's slowly killing our species.
Don't feel bad about the jump scare with Dr. Oaken in the lab. People who've seen this movie a hundred times and KNOW unequivocally the EXACT moment it happens...still get got by that one. One of the best jump-scares in cinema. Those are always the best...the ones you know are coming, but are still so sudden, in a moment of such otherwise total inactivity, that you still fall for it.
I saw this in the theatre and I kid you not, after the president's speech, we all cheered. It was like we forgot that we were watching a movie for a second. That speech was so powerful and is exactly how I would want to hear my president speak if we were facing something this big.
My favorite line in the whole movie isn’t even words. It’s when Jasmine asks the kid how she looks, he gives her the so so hand signal.. Cracks me up every time..
Adam Baldwin, whose character killed the murderous alien at Area 51, is also in "Firefly," "Serenity," "Predator 2," "Chuck," "Control Factor," "Star Quest 2," and "The last Ship." He has covered quite a lot of ground in science fiction.
@@LtDan-rk4si I think that Stephen Baldwin is okay, also. He, William, and Alec aren't Adam's brothers, though. As far as I know they aren't related to him but coincidentally have the same last name.
Nice reaction, I do want to say that the reason this movie is so long is this was the peak of AAA when it came out in theaters, peak level graphics and 3d animation. The scene where the ship shoots the beam down and destroys the building, along with the fire raging down the public street, this was the first time such things were shown on screen. In my opinion, the main reason you could predict everything is because you are living in a post Avengers movies world, or in other words you are already desensitized to this kind of mass destruction being shown on film, yet in 1996 this was cutting edge as hell especially if you saw this in Imax.
I felt the same way you did the first time I watched this in theatres back in the day. I've rewatched it many many times since and each time it just gets better and better. I love the score, love the corny one liners and that speech still gives me chills to this day! Great reaction.
Unpopular opinion: I really enjoyed the President's speech, but the crowning moment of this film for me was when Will Smith went "Stop side-seat driving!" That cracks me up every time.
I love how you were able to predict so much and I agree that Will Smith is Will Smith in every movie. Personally, I am not a fan of his humor, but I think it's perfect for the movie. Also, unrelated to that, whenever anyone says "Fire at will," I am incapable of not responding with "Poor Will."
This is my birthday ritual movie. I watch it every 4th of July. What's not to love? Great characters, great effects, great one liners, fantastic score, fantastic visuals, well edited... It is the epitome of a classic summer blockbuster event. Right up there with Men in Black and so many other movies of the mid 90s that just defined the cinema going experience for me.
I love this movie. It's over 28 years old and still looks incredible lol 14:13 that shot is iconic 14:55 the audience in theaters cheered at that part for obvious reasons lol 18:18 one of the best lines of the movie lol 19:59 that was mostly improv by Will and the smell he's asking about is actually coming from the dry lake bed they're on lol 32:10 one of the best speeches in cinema history 39:38 Jeff was talking to the director about his line in Jurassic Park and they thought It would work really well here, so they put it in "must go faster, must go faster, must go faster!" Lol
"How do they not notice that? What do they look at when they walk?"... - Some folks, even without a cell phone, are completely unaware of their surroundings or the space they occupy in it. Even scarier, is that some of these folks DRIVE. Yikes!
I saw this in theaters I think the day after it came out. The one thing I remember is when they showed the scene with the White House getting destroyed you could hear several people crying in the audience.
Wen Voyager 1 reached interstellar space in August 2012 ,We became an interstellar species then cause we're no longer bound to the sun. The Hubble Deep Fields are cool af too!!!!! Can't wait for more JWST Deep Fields.
The crop duster is the best character in this movie with one of the most epic sequences in all of cinema history. "Hello boys!.... I'mmmmmm baaaaackkkk!!!"
So.... I was on board the ship that picked up the Apollo 11 Astronauts. In fact, the helicopter that picked them up at the capsule was flown by my squadron commanding officer. It is my favorite space related event.
1. Hiller is a USMC Captain he knows his holiday off is over. That's why he didn't even have to wait to be called in. Jasmine should know that. 2. In the theater I was in the people in there actually stood up and cheered when the White House and the Capitol Building blew up. 3. In my top 10 reasons out of thousands to NOT live in a Metropolis. Getting the hell out. 4. Lisa Jakub/Alicia is FINE!😍😋 5. Brent Spiner/Dr. Okum played Data in Star Trek TNG. It's nice to see him with emotions. 6. Goof: The president said he sent up an AWAC. It's AWACS= Airborne Warning And Control SYSTEM. 7. Hiller FAIL parashoot jump.🙄😲 8. My favorite Will Smith movie is, "I am Legend".
Didn't get to see this in the theaters, so when it came out on home video I picked up a tape & took it back my barracks room to watch it. I was active duty Army at the time, stationed in the middle of nowhere, California desert. Had the room to myself, so I was just parked on my bunk watching it...got to 14:37 and, at the _exact_ moment that Air Force One was taking off & barely outrunning the massive fireball, all of the power on the entire base went out. It had never happened before, it never happened again in the time I was there. Just a wee bit freaky. 😂😂😂 One of the least _science_ movies in the science fiction genre, but still an incredibly fun watch.
Oh, yeah, the declaration of independence was actually signed on July 2nd. Makes sense to start the movie there. The 4th of July is when it took affect. Makes sense to have both dates noted.
Fun fact -- there's a Special Edition of this movie that's actually 9 minutes *longer* than this one. Main thing it adds is stuff where Russell Case's younger son needs medication, which makes their financial situation more dire, as well as a subplot where the daughter has a dorky boyfriend. Not only did this skyrocket Will Smith to stardom and make a huge mark as one of the biggest blockbusters of the '90s, it also launched director Roland Emmerich into the big time. He has gone onto make other disaster movies similar to this one like The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, and the recent Moonfall, as well as the widely-hated 1998 American Godzilla movie. I can't say I really recommend any of these, as they're like this but even dumber. Emmerich also returned for 2016's Independence Day: Resurgence, along with many of this film's cast members, although in the unlikely event that you watch that movie, I will let you discover for yourself who else returns and who doesn't (I bet at least some people on both sides of that will really surprise you). As I said on Patreon when you posted the full watch-along, I liked many of the ideas that went into that movie and was interested to see what they would do with the third film, but then the second film bombed and they never made the trilogy-capper they had in mind. One of my favorite films of the '90s (which he may have even done directly after this one) stars Bill Pullman. It is, as is usually the case with me, a forgotten gem. I'll have to put that one on the list of possibilities should I be lucky enough to win the Member of the Month pick.
I think I saw that version. Wasn't there a minor script change where Will Smith punched that little alien, and yelled , "Keep my wife's name out of your %$#@ mouth!!!" ?
It’s a super campy pseudo sci-fi comedy. I like it, it’s great watching it in surround sound but maybe your assessment is correct a guilty pleasure. I do watch it every 4th of July.
I was in the Atlanta Olympic marching band in 1996 for the Atlanta Olympics. This movie came out around the opening ceremonies and I was telling all my friends hey if the aliens are gonna attack, this would be the time for the attack.
March plans? Prep for a few upcoming musicals I have coming up (I do sound mixing and design), and spend a weekend doing things "other", including going to see Hamilton (finally!). Hope your March is great!
My favourite astronomical thing is speed related. The fastest man-made object ever is one of the probes that is orbiting the sun taking readings; it reached 163 km/s at perihelion in 2021, though it's expected to break that record later this year. At that speed, assuming it could be maintained, it would take 77,609 YEARS to reach the Centauri star system. Really puts interstellar sizes into perspective. @7:40 It wouldn't be a total eclipse since the blocking object is so much closer to the ground, so lots of light is leaking in from the sides. With eclipses, the blocking object is preventing a very wide angle of light from hitting the surface of the planet. @9:45: The whole fight or flight instinct idea has been completely disproved psychologically. It's simply not a human response pattern, though some other animals have it. A good example of why this isn't a human thing is that women typically react to danger differently than men. @29:25: Everyone makes fun of the computer virus subplot. In a deleted scene it was explained that the computer revolution happened because of reverse-engineered alien technology. David's virus worked because he was using an Apple laptop and Apple chips are closer to the original tech. Still over-the-top, but at least it's marginally plausible.
I'm thinking (once the shields are down) the majority of other city ships were taken out by small nukes (obviating the need to target the primary weapon). They only had to do aerial battle with ships near remaining populations.
Amazing classic Independence Day starring Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Robert Loggia and Randy Quaid. Thank you kaiielle great reaction awesome. Next time reacts the sequel Independence Day: Resurgence
Yeah, they didn't need to upload a virus, all they needed was to install Windows 95. I can picture the scene on the bridge of the alien ship. "Raise shilds" - are you sure? "Yes!" "How long does this take?" "I think it froze, sir. Try hitting control-alt-delete." - Windows failed to shut down properly last time ...
It is the alien's original use of the satellites that allowed the hacking to be able to travel both ways. The aliens were using earthling tech to communicate with each other so it was them who deciphered the coding language barrier that David found so it was easy to utilize the backdoor access for humanity's retaliation. This movie is quite old now and you're definitely spoiled for choice due to later movies that came after this and so you are too young to appreciate this for what was when it came out and also the generational deterioration of attention span means that you just can't handle longform art that people in the 80's and 90s are used to (there is a standard non-extended edition that may be better for the younger generation and the TV cut is even shorter). This movie is a great 4th of July movie that most all Americans put on or tune into on TV.
Like I said in my review, if I had watched this back when it released in 96 or even in the year or two after, I'd have probably loved it and it'd be a movie that I still love. Unfortunately I just have no way of knowing, so I come at this from who I am today of course. ☺️
It is cheesy but is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is from a time when movies were more often made for fun over message. Ironically its sequel is its opposite as more message than fun.
All I can say about this movie is that it holds a very special place in my heart as it was the first movie I saw in theaters after graduating from Navy Basic Training in June of 96.
Not even 20 seconds in and already liked the video... LOVE me some Jinjer! edit: Had to really think about it while watching this; I think the space-related accomplishment I like most is when the Voyager probes used gravitational slingshots to visit up-close all of the major outer planets, but that is in large part due to serendipitous positioning of those planets and some excellent math skills. It's not the most impressive thing we've done, but I like it a lot. An honorable mention would be how early we were able to measure the distance of a lot of stars using parallax. As to this movie... the fire tsunami blew my mind in the theaters. Regular tsunamis freak me the f#
Kaiielle I really like your reaction to independent States my favorite alien movie my favorite part is when will smith punchs the alien says welcome to Earth🛸👽 and when bill Pullman does the president's speech🇺🇲 Hope I know sometimes don't like that 1 but I like it and I think you should give it a try Kaiielle it's not about people think, it's what think you of it !
When the crop duster dad pressed the missile button by accident before the attack, I think he accidentally screwed something up and that's why his last missile didn't launch.
So glad that you are reviewing the film Alien. Its sequel to the first is that which T-2 is to The Terminator. So atleast I know you will be happy with the future reviews that you will soon record. Yeah this movie was just a great big popcorn all-star cast kind of flick that ruled the box office in the mid 90's. It's just a fun watch and a staple shown on our cable/satellite every 4th of July. Lol. I'm glad you got a kick out of it. Great review!
I love this movie. When it comes to unrealistic and corny. Same goes with Marvel movies. 😅 but that's what makes it not boring and fun to watch. It's also a comedy movie and for young people.
It's just a big, fun, summer, blockbuster, popcorn movie. Not designed to be serious. I loved it when it came out. I love it every time I watch it. Is it realistic? Of course not. Is it cheesy? Of course! Are the effects great? Not really, but I didn't mind it one bit. I hear you about the run time, although... weaving as many story lines together as it did, I'm not sure they could have cut a whole lot more out of it. There are some long reaction shots, but... I'm standing there gawking at the huge, alien ship reveals with everyone else. Believe it or not, there's actually an extended edition with stuff that was cut out. None of that added much, so I always watch the theatrical version. So... per your request, plans for the month. Celebrating my wife's birthday, the grandbaby is coming to town for a visit. Always fun. And... just working, working, working. 6 more years! Thank you for the watch. I'll be looking forward to the next one. (Alien coming soon? That's another one that I loved when it came out. Scared me quite a bit... and I was old enough not to have been scared. But... yeah. Enjoy!
@@kaiielle Oh, even better! I wasn't going to say anything for fear of spoiling it. (I missed the 's'.) I'm still fairly new to your channel. I haven't been through all your reactions yet. I just looked up and found Alien. I'll watch you watch it, and then I'll look forward to AlienS. And, I won't say anything about the 3rd or 4th ones... in the event that you decide to continue with the franchise. (Oh... by the way... I didn't get to watch when it was live, but I just saw you on Popcorn in Bed's 2nd Annual Poppie Awards. I didn't know you were a moderator on their channel. (I don't usually comment there. Not for lack of interest. They've always got so much going on. One more voice seems like it would just add to the din. But, they're a lot of fun, and I enjoy them. I wish them the best of luck! And I will continue to watch their channel. And... best of luck to you, too! I'm glad I found you. (The whole reaction thing is a story, which I will be glad to share. Another time. (It's getting late here, and I've got to get up in the morning.) Reaction channels are an interesting phenomenon.) At any rate... thank you for the guidance. I'll look forward to seeing that... and whatever you're watching next! Thank you! Take care, and have a great March!
To be fair, the effects were pretty great for 1996, and they were good enough to win the Oscar for Best Visual Effects for that year. A lot of the fire effects of the cities and White House getting destroyed were done using practical effects rather than CGI.
Standare Roland Emmerich shlockbuster - cartoonish characters spouting ridiculous dialogue in yet another end-of-the-world scenario. Lots of fun...as long as you're willing to turn off your brain for the duration. lol
Most unrealistic part of the movie: Russel almost launching a missile from a jet while on the ground. The weight-on-wheels switch would never allow a missile to fire or even the chain gun to be fired. It’s impossible. And a missile wouldn’t “spool up” like you heard in the movie, it would be instantaneous. An easy oversight for movie makers who are not aware of such failsafes, but as a former USAF F-16 flight line guy, it makes me laugh😂
For those who go into a mainstream scale action sci fi blockbuster looking for compelling charachter engagements, interactions, a strong plot that makes sense. And meaningfulness to it do you think Independence Day is the must see for them
Considering he was directly under the center of the ship, ejection would’ve prolonged his life by maybe 2 seconds. The incredible explosion caused by the his jet hitting the firing element would’ve cooked him midair, and if that didn’t do it, he and the entire city would’ve been crushed by the crashing ship. There is absolutely zero chance of survival by ejection.
Actually what the father said about all you need is Love is actually true. Not just in the sense of having a loved one or a spouse. But having love in your heart. Once you have that, then you'll be able to open yourself up, and people will see that you're a good person. You may or may not have a lot of money but you'll be rich forever.
There was another ending where Russel was refused as a pilot so he straps missiles to his biplane and rams the alien ship but the ending we got was much better showing him make the choice for his kids
It's a comfort to know that at this moment, a Millenial is hard at work on the 21st century's first $ 3B earning, 15 minute, cinematic masterpiece entirely filmed on an iPhone 23, using special FX techniques that aren't going to be invented for another 30 years. But hey, back in the 90s we were working with stone and chisel. The older generations appreciate the strength of character required to suffer through our clumsy attempts at entertainment.
