"not until the fat lady sings", this is an expression that describes the ending of a long Richard Wagner opera, which was finally over after the "fat lady" (Brunhilde) had sung. So when Will Smith gave the cigar to Jeff Goldblum, he basically told him to light it only after their task was done.

The major commanding the facility doesn't get enough credit. He's spent years in charge of a facility where they'd shoot you on sight just for getting onto the land.
