I bought a '22 Carbon R in August. Indian completely changed the personality if the bike. Let's just say I was less than impressed when I test rode a FTR in '19. The changes in the '22 is beyond amazing. Well done, Indian.
I was an early adopter on the 2019 Race Replica. I LOOOOVED that bike. I put 8k miles on it and absolutely adored it. The day I traded it for the Carbon R, I literally had tears in my eyes to leave my RR behind at OKC Indian. The very first ride, my sadness changed over to shame, as I knew immediately how far outclassed the RR is compared to the Carbon R. I knew right away, I knew nothing about riding because the Carbon was soon much faster at everything, even tho the PowerPlant was unchainged. It even revs silky smooth up to 3k before getting totally passed off! The responses in this video are spot on.
Just got my 22' FTR S and I love it. Planning pretty much all the mods that are done to that carbon as well so that was nice to see. Definitely taking the baffle out of the stock exhaust, sounds so much better even on the video.
Goes to show how important tiers are on a bike that's what I believe the big difference is. I bet if you put the same tire set up on the original one it would make a massive difference.
I own the 2019 race replica, which is IMHO, the best looking version of this bike so far. I have seen the Carbon and sat on it at my dealer.. it's great, don't get me wrong, but I'm glad I got the race replica before they changed it to the Carbon. The stance of the bike is designed for the offset 19/18" wheels. Without the bigger wheels it loses that intangible the previous version had. I also prefer the higher and wider bars of the outgoing model. I feel in love with the Carbon seat so I ordered one for my 2019.
I have the 2019 FTR 1200 S and love it , everything most people didn’t like about the bike I love it made it a bike in its own class, had Ryan Lloyd from Charlotte Indian tune my ECU and it runs like a completely different bike just love it, I have 13 bikes from big touring models to street legal dirt bikes and the FTR is about the only bike I ride anymore, drove it Coast to Coast and had no problems at all except my ass was sore but an airhawk seat pad helped that
Lets be honest, if you have the money to be comfortable taking your expensive ftr anywhere near dirt then you can afford to put the flat track wheels and tires back on it. Sporty from stock is almost always the best option imo.
I like the Carbon, even with that color, but is it really worth $4k USD more than the base model FTR, especially now that they all run 17 front and rear? I mean at that price you can pick up a new ZH2.
You also get fully adjustably ohlins front and rear, better seat, ride command, and akrapovic system over the base model for the 4k. So probably worth the 4K to some.
@@everettbranscom6536to each their own. I'd fault on the side of the cheaper because I like to tinker with stuff and make it my own. 4000 dollars can buy lots of goodies.
The flickability will come largely from the change in wheel sizes, as well as a change in geometry, for the 2021 model - no need to fork out the extra 4k for that!
Whenever I here his hype about "character" or dislike of it's lacking of.... I imagine Harley riders saying "it's HERITAGE. You have to own one to understand." Seems like a justification for faults that average riders would ultimately be quite happy living without. In truth someone selling "character" sounds to me as if they are saying... "Yes, this is wet stinky poo, but at least it's not dry sunbaked poo. That would be boring poo."
I've got a 2022 FTR Rally which still has 19" and 18" wheels (spoked), but it has a rounder tar than the first models. No doubt the other new 2022 models will be better for someone looking to take it to a track, and I'm sure in the twisties they would lean a little better than the Rally, but the Rally is pretty good in the twisties as well. I just took mine to the Tail of the Dragon and I had a blast.
I’ve owned the OG 2019 Race Replica and loved the wheel base so much that I bought a 2022 Championship Edition. Sold that for a 2024 100% Carbon which has the 17’s. While I still have love for the previous offset wheels on the 19 and 22, I must admit that the 17’s ride and handle exponentially better. I’m a tall guy so the increase in height on the 19 and 22 never bothered me. But man what a ride difference.
That bike does not have a power commander they don't do power commanders for the ftr1200 you have to use a power vision 3 to reflash the ecu, or a bench flash. crap review from people that just read fact sheets then ride the bike gingerly, talk about handling while leaning about as much as you would on a massive harley
I've ridden both of those at the dealer in Daytona. Whitney is right. The carbon is even on RU-vid being made fun of as McDonald's-ish. But they do have other colors that are cheaper and just as good. Don't be hypnotized by the colorful packaging. Overall, I'd buy the previous year model with the 19"/18" setup, but I'm tall. It's more relaxed and easier to turn in. It's noticeable. The difference in the shocks? Not really a difference. You know they do make budget Ohlins just like they make budget Brembo, right?. The 19/18 tire bikes also had slightly more ground clearance. Why I passed on the FTR? The exhaust. Looks like it was spray painted gold by a 10 year old. The dealer in Daytona had every color and both years and all the exhausts showed chipping and uneven coating. It was nasty. The bike has a very room seat. Whitney mentioned the turn-in on the older bike being sluggish. That's because she's too short to sit back and shift the weight where it's supposed to be on that bike. She's trying to ride it like a crotch rocket and it's not. It's trying to tell her it's not! And you finally mention that the bikes were fitted with very different tread. Big difference if all you're used to is a normal sport bike tire. Take it to the track? Please Whitney. How many normal riders are buying this bike for that? Come back to Earth. Most people won't even use more than 30% of this bike's capabilities in the twisties. By the way, the dealer was trying to steer me into buying last year's model, spouting off that they could make better deals. Problem with this bike is that there are bikes out there, as capable or more capable, at a better price.
GOD DAMNIT WHITNEY!!! My favorite trim was the carbon *because* of the red trellis frame.... Now all I can see is MCDONALD'S 😡😡 Thank you so much for ruining it for me dude!! Totally unrelated: love your contribution and wanted to ask if y'all could do a DIY on how to repaint your rear shocks and forks? Cheers!
The FTR 1200 is my dream bike, at 5'5 I'll be dreaming for quite some time lol I know DanTheFireman has one and is only an inch or 2 taller but I ain't got them skills yet.
The rake on the new FTR is different to, a bit steeper ( 25.3 instead of 26.3 degrees for the 2019 model) So not only the wheels make it corner better. Front brakedisk are the same 320mm as the 2019 model. Rear disk on the 2019 is bigger on the 2019 with 265mm to 260mm on the new one. I will have to choose the old FTR 1200 due to the higher seat hight, (I am 6"2 and dislike bikes with lower seathights). Maybe put some road tires on it with other wheels.
heck ye, those r big changes, the tires, the size, the seat height, narrower bars, BIG changes. of course its so noticeable. much better idea, those former wheel sizes an whatever flat-track tires were horrible idea. but the new 17's u need a 190 on the back. they had the looks at least. still the 100mi.-to-a-tank, fill up everyday bs still needs addressed. scouts same, they have tiny gas tanks.
@@FlyingAAuto Yeah, it is significantly more hassle and much more involved than you'd initially think. I think that the 19/18 combination is in keeping with the spirit of the bike although I do accept that it limits the tyre options. I want to put a pair of Pirelli MT rs on mine, but they aren't available for that combination.
@@yassassin6425 yeah, I like the look of the larger tires and the off road pretense (or at least gravel road pretense)… but damn if I can fine a pair of tires in stock anywhere that fit…
I got the 2022 FTR Standard Black Smoke specifically for the way it looked vs the S & Carbon. I've ridden all 2022 versions except the Rally & I don't need the ride modes myself so I know now I made the right choice for me. If one day the suspension needs work I'll upgrade to the Ohlins at that point. Gotta say the Toce full exhaust with the Lloydz flash makes the FTR have a much angrier & aggressive feel. I recommend that upgrade to anyone getting an FTR, otherwise that distinct V-twin sound is just wasted pushing through the big cat & standard exhausts.
Fell in love with the FTR as soon as I saw it revealed. Just got out of college. Hopefully after saving up some money and getting a motorcycle license, I’ll be able to purchase this as my first bike :)
This thing is a beautiful blend of American and European motorcycling and I love it. Too bad Harley still chase sales from rich boomers instead of giving us their version of one of these.
Do y’all think the new Ducati scrambler model is aimed at the same market the FTR is? Big VTwin, off road heritage and sport rubber sounds awfully similar to me 😂
I had a 19 ftr 1200 that I totaled it 4 months ago. Such a unique bike. I will going to get me another one but probably the 22 model this time. I sign up for winning the 19 model here and I wish I win it so I don’t have to go through process of buying one.
What about putting Sport Touring tires on the pre-2022 models? I'd really like to see that comparison. A used 2019 with $200 of tires may just be the ticket vs buying a whole new motorcycle. Big fan of the channel, btw.
That carbon is probably one of the best looking bikes on the market right now, It was my first choice before settling on the 2022 Ducati hypermotard 950 SP I went with the Ducati because the Indian seems to have a lot of problems with fueling that I keep reading about I wonder if they fixed all these issues? Not that the Ducati don't have issues. Either way to very expensive bikes with proprietary software which will only cost you a lot more in the future having to bring it to the dealer.😒
They have updated the throttle response and maps on new 22 bike. I don’t really get the ‘cruising pace’ thing Spite, I think you’ll be in a minority there.. it’s a good chassis, sport naked and good handling and proper grippy tyres make the bike. The compromised high tyres was too throw back to the flat tracker, now Murica has a proper sport naked since the Buell Lightning ⚡️ also isn’t all ‘22 bikes now got 17s which will be the biggest change, so doesn’t have to be a $5k upgrade, I think closest competitor now is Diavel or Monster.
I'd like to talk to the design team at Indian and ask them why they would choose to put a 2-1-2 exhaust on it? Purely for looks right? At what point does the FTR focus on performance?
I’m curious about the market for it because it starts at MT-10 price and ends at European hyper naked price. Now I’m not a sport bike guy at all. I’d never suggest one to anybody. But you can get an R1 or S1000RR for the price of the Carbon. I’d personally get an MT-10 SP but if it didn’t exist I’d get either of those sport bikes over it too.
yes... but after having an ftr and an mt-10, for road use only the mt-10 or z1000 or most super naked will give you a better performance and fun ,putting the ftr in the same category is killing it's uniqueness and what about killing it's trail abilities?...sorry but at this setup i would change to a Ducati monster.
I've not ridden one or anything like this bike buy I think this is my dream bike! Unfortunately I don't live in America(so cant enter the give away) and its a bit out of my price bracket to buy and maintain. Agreed that the red and yellow isnt nice
What did you not like about the seating position on the 2021. I traded my 2019 1200 after a thousand miles for a z900rs. Awsome vid, I am 6 4 would I fit on the shorter bike?
the s has the same wheels and tires as the carbon. The bad tires and wheels he is talking about are only on the 2019 all 2022 FTRs except the rally have 17s with sport tec RRs for tires.
I own a '19 FTR, and yes, putting better tires on it helps a lot. I got to ride the newer FTR, but only at a demo ride(around the block in a group). Didn't notice enough of a difference to justify upgrading.
Get the 17” front tire…more sport tire choices would be the biggest reason. I agree with her about the color, slap on that 17” front on that all black version
