The reason that Belloq and the Nazis take the Ark into the desert to open it is explained in the movie. They say that they want to open it here to make sure it contains the ten commandments. They don't want to take a chance of bringing it to Hitler, opening it there, and only then finding out that it's empty.
@thorguff
@thorguff Год назад
That was Belloq's excuse, which made sense. However, he had his own ambitions and hoped he could use the power of the ark to be an unstoppable force. He did not want to just hand it over and lose it. It cost him his life, though.
@jhornacek
@jhornacek Год назад
@@thorguffYes, Belloq did not like working for the Nazis - he says this to Indy earlier. But he chose to do it, knowing who the Nazis were. He had his own ambitions, but he was surrounded by Nazis here. There was no way he thought that he wouldn't have to hand the ark over to Hitler. The reason he gives - to open it first in the desert to make sure it's real instead of waiting to open it in front of Hitler - is a valid and true one.

The medallion was hot from the fire. When he picked it up it burned the imprint into his hand. The Nazis were able to cast a replica medallion from the imprint which is why their medallion only had markings on one side and thus they were digging in the wrong spot.

I saw this film in theaters when my grandparents took me to see it. It had a profound impact on the rest of my life. I didn't become an archeologist, but that didn't stop me from climbing over a ruined castle's wall in Germany just to see what was left inside (nothing but ruin) only to have Polizei waiting for me to come out. I also couldn't help digging a few holes when I was in Iraq in 2003 just to see what I'd find (once again, nothing but I still did it). I'm glad you enjoyed this film!

It's amazing this film was rated PG considering what happens to Belloq and the Nazis when the Ark is opened. At the time there was no PG-13 rating so it was either G, PG or R. For a lot of young kids seeing this movie, seeing those melting faces scarred a lot of us. The next movie - Temple of Doom - pushes the boundaries even further, helping to create the PG-13 rating.
@thorguff

The standards were much more lax in those days. Several PG movies from back then would even be R-rated today I think. "Beastmaster" is one that totally traumatized me with its extreme violence and overall very disturbing tone. I still loved it though. You could even have pretty significant nudity and still get PG-rated in those days. "Clash of the Titans" (1981) is one of several examples. The "Andromeda Strain" contains significant nudity and violence and was somehow G-rated. Compare that to "The King's Speech" which was rated R because it says the F-word too many times in a scene where it's absolutely necessary to say it because of the plot.
@jhornacek
@jhornacek Год назад
@@thorguffThere were a lot of kids horrified by the melting-faces scene, and there were a lot parents horrified by it - not because it personally horrified them but because they brought their kids to see a PG-rated adventure movie and didn't expect to see literal faces melting in it.
@jhornacek
@jhornacek Год назад
@@Trip_FontaineThe movie Airplane! came out in 1980 and got a PG-rating, and there's a scene where a naked woman runs in front of the camera and all you can see are her breasts. There's a lost a lot of sexual innuendo. I've watched more than reaction video of that film where the reactors ask "How is this a PG rated movie?" The ratings system is messed up. If you say "fuck" just once then you can get a PG-13 rating, even if the movies contains lots of violence. But if you say "fuck" two times or more, it's an R-rating. On the commentary track for Gosford Park, Robert Altman said he deliberately put a bunch of "fuck"s in the dialogue because he wanted the movie to be rated R and "I didn't want a bunch of teenagers seeing my movie. But there is nothing else in the movie to justify the R-rating - it's a murder mystery but the murder is offscreen and there little to none blood or guts, and no nudity or sex. But the American ratings system thinks it's ok for teenagers to see sex and violence, but there's no way they can hear the word "fuck" more than once.

The Ark is definitely the most iconic artifact in Indiana Jones. It's holy power was brilliantly foreshadowed when Indy showed the government agents a picture of the Ark and mentioned "lightning, fire, power of God". What we saw in the climax was exactly what Indy had said to the agents and it is both mighty and terrifying. I always figured that the ghosts of the Ark mark those that had their eyes open, the lightning strikes them down and then the fire incinerates the bodies leaving no trace of anything left. As for Indy and Marion keeping their eyes closed, it makes sense that Indy would have done his research on the Ark by looking it up in the Bible which does state that no man can look upon God and live which also applies to the Ark if it's opened so keeping their eyes closed shows they respected God for doing so which spared their lives.

Here's a fun anecdote you might enjoy. From a ScreenRant article: "While the scene is still in character for Indiana Jones as he exhaustedly pulls out the gun because he’s in a time crunch to find Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), the original plan for the sequence was markedly different. Spielberg originally intended for Indy to engage in a sword fight with the instigator, though behind-the-scenes troubles on set changed the minds of those involved. At the time of filming the scene, Harrison Ford and much of the crew were extremely sick with dysentery, so filming a long fight scene would have been too taxing. Ford suggested Indy just “shoot the sucker” instead, to which director Steven Spielberg obliged."

The Ark of the covenant was built by Moses according to Gods design. It was made of gofer wood overlaid with gold. This box had a top with two carved angels on top with their wing’s touching. This top is called the mercy seat where God’s Shekinah Glory presented himself. The Shekinah Glory was cloud of smoke by day and fire by night. Only the levite priests were allowed to carry the ark on polls. If anyone else touched the ark they would immediately die. Inside the ark, at Gods direction to Moses, was the two stone tables, Gods commandments written with the finger of God and given to Moses. Also in the ark was Manna (angels food), God feed the Jews as they wondered in the wilderness and Arron’s Rod. A staff Arron, Moses brother and high priest which God chose from the elders to show who he wanted. You can read the story of the ark of the covenant and what it means in the first book of the Bible, Genesis

I'm glad that Spielberg kept the original title card for Raiders in the movie itself. It was just called "Raiders of the Lost Ark." At the time, Spielberg and Lucas thought this might be a singular film, not a franchise. It wasn't until Raiders became a blockbuster that they came up with more films. It's your choice, of course, but "Crystal Skull" and "Dial of Destiny" are pretty much movies to skip. The ending of "Last Crusade" was the perfect way to cap off the trilogy without damaging the Indy legacy. Also, Raiders was co-written by Philip Kaufman who worked on the awesome 1978 remake of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and the movie adaptation of "The Right Stuff" about the Apollo mission to the moon. Both must see films.

The box itself is the ark that contains the tablets of the 10 commandments, a bowl of manna, and Aaron's rod that budded. The lid that goes on top is called "the mercy seat". It has 2 cheribim (a type of angel) bowing and facing each other with wings touching. This was the earthly throne of God. No one knows where it actually is. There are tons on theories, but it has not been positively identified since the time of Solomon. It was not in the temple in Jeremiah's time and after. One of the theories put it in Tanis, but frankly it's a complete myth for all the wrong reasons. It is rumored to be in Ethiopia at a special church there, but when they parade it under cover, it has the wrong dimensions and no one was supposed to be able to carry it, but the Levites. None of those at the church in Ethiopia are Levites. As a Christian, I can say that there is no purpose for the ark now and it is likely destroyed long, long ago.

The Ark of the Covenant was sacred to the Israelites. A chest made of acacia wood and covered with gold, inside were Aaron's rod, a jar of manna (which fed the twelve tribes in the desert), and, I believe, the tablets of the Law. The Ark travelled with the tribes during their wandering years; no one was permitted to touch it except Levites. To do so was to die. As part of the travelling Temple, it was placed in the Holy of Holies, into which only the high priest was allowed to enter, and that only once per year, to make intercession for the people. During that time, the Presence came down and sat on the Mercy Seat, on top of the Ark.

The horrible thing that most don't put together was that 10 years ago, Indy had a falling out with Dr. Ravenwood. We learn later that it was over Marion. Marion is 24 in the movie... Makes it a bit creepy, given her comment that she was "...just a child. [She] was in LOVE!" In 2008, her age was retconned to 27. BTW, $5,000 for the medallion would be $110,000 in today's money.

Great reaction to a classic movie! Good old Pat Roach, British actor, bodybuilder, and wrestler who appeared in all three Indiana Jones movies and died in each one of them, twice in this one. He played one of the Sherpas in the gunfight at the bar and the brawny German boxer at the airplane, dying as each. In Temple of Doom he was the Thugee who regretted having the extra long sash that led to his most gruesome (thankfully unseen) death. And in Crusade his death ended up on the cutting room floor, but he is seen briefly escorting an SS officer to the zeppelin. He also had a major supporting role in Willow, where he played the evil General Kael, his face hidden behind a skull mask on his helmet all movie. I love that the Ark knew that those who opened it were evil, so it destroyed all who looked on it and then their bodies were . . . removed . . . so that nothing of the impure remained. Which is almost more terrifying. There were dozens of men. And now there is nothing to show that they were even there. The shot at the end of this gigantic warehouse filled with thousands upon thousands of crates was what inspired the creators of the very good and fun SyFy show Warehouse 13, which is also absolutely worth watching. 🙂

I saw this in the theater as a kid and there was another movie about the same time called "In Search of Historic Jesus Christ" and it talked about the pursuit to find another such ark that contained the burial shrouds of Jesus. I think they held up as well as the Ten Commandments and were reduced to "sand" as well. As a kid in the 80's I heard about the Spear of Destiny and other artifacts like these, and my take was governments traveling the world to find magical items of historical and religious significance to help them rule the world. Thanks to the Indiana Jones movies, I walked away with a great deal of skepticism for magic, religion AND governments.

Thank you for some awesome reaction videos. The scene where Indy went under the truck was a nod to a stunt man named Yakima Canutt. One of Yakima’s most memorable stunts occurs in the 1939John Wayne western “Stagecoach.” He amazingly jumps from his horse onto a team of six stagecoach horses and then slides underneath all of them and the stagecoach to a safe stop on the ground. clip the first 35 seconds ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2B2FW6Vq7E4.html

* They kind of glossed over one of the most interesting parts of the film, and that is, "How did Indy and Marion get off the island, and how did they get the ark off the island as well?" There's not even a deleted scene to enlighten us on this very important moment in the story. If I had to guess how they did it, I would guess that since Indy speaks fluent German, and was still wearing a German soldier uniform, he could've gone back to their little docking area, and snuck into whatever they were using as their radio communications room. * He could've knocked out the communications officer, and sent a message to the United States, giving them precise coordinates then, sneak back to where he's got Marion hiding(probably not anywhere close to the ark), and then just hide with her, hunker down, and wait for the U.S. Navy to show up, to pick up Indy and Marion and...the ark. So, what do you think of my theory? Also, how the hell did Indy get on the island in the first place? There *is* a deleted scene that shows that. Apparently, he tied himself to the periscope with his bullwhip, which he clearly did not have on his person when he climbed onto the German U-Boat. They realized this, and I'm sure that's why they deleted that scene. * The only other possibility(which is actually more realistic) is that he was able to turn the wheel on the door, and managed to get it open, entered, closed the door, turned the wheel to seal it shut, and simply hid on the metal ladder leading down, until he was pretty sure they arrived at their destiny. Then he opened the door, got out, closed the door, climbed down to the water(in much the same way that he climbed up the boat), and swam to the closest ladder he saw when he felt he was close enough, and then the movie picks up right after he makes it to the top of the ladder and hides behind those crates of supplies. Well, that's the only thing I can think of at any rate.

I remember thinking, when I saw this in 1981, that you could argue that Indiana rescued Marion from Major Arnold Ernst Toht but otherwise the main outcome would have been pretty much the same, the Nazi’s would have opened the Arc and all who witnessed it would have suffered the same fate, however, aster I reflected on this I realised that the Arc might then have remained in the possession of the Nazi’s so that they could continue to research ways of exploiting it. I recently saw a clip from The Bing Bang Theory where they distraught to hear that Indiana Jones was superfluous to the outcome of the movie. Only 40 years late in working that one out 😂

When this came out...and for years after, it was just- Raiders of the Lost Ark. Later on, some time after the third movie, the packaging began to read "Indiana Jones and...." to make it uniform with the other movie titles. The same thing was done to the Rambo franchise. The first movie was called First Blood. The second movie was called Rambo: First Blood part II. But then the third movie was just called Rambo III. When the fourth movie was released, it was titled RAMBO... so they changed the first movie to Rambo: First Blood, ...but they still left the third movie as Rambo III. Very stupid...how does Rambo III come before Rambo??? Bunch of nonsense.

A bit of trivia: The scene where Indy faces the big guy with the huge sword was supposed to be a protracted fight. Unfortunately Harrison Ford was really sick with the flu the day they were to shoot the scene so when the guy starts whipping his huge sword around, Indy looks at him as if to say, “Yeah, right.” Then he shoots him dead. Spielberg decided to go with that take and the rest is cinematic history.

The sand is supposed to be what is left of the stone tables God wrote the 10 commandments on. Other things that were in the ark were some of the manna that God used to feed the tribes of Israel in the wilderness, Aaron's rod which spouted a living branch and other artifacts. The ark was usually kept in the holy of holies of the temple and the head priest would only enter that part of the temple once a year. Only priests were permitted to touch it, and one guy who was not priest was instantly struck dead for touching it.

You know, maybe the ark only did that to the Nazis because they're Nazis. It's a Hebrew artifact and the Nazis were already mistreating Jews in 1936, though they hadn't yet started the true horrors of the Holocaust, they were beginning to get started down that path with massive persecutions. So maybe people who aren't being terrible to Jews might get a different result when they open it. Maybe not. I guess that's why top men are working on it. Top men.

According to the Bible, the Ark was the literal throne of God on earth. He would laterally appear above and between the two Cherubim (angels) atop the Ark. Also no one could touch the Ark, which is why it was carried by those poles. So Belloq and the Nazis were committing many blasphemies. God was literally punishing them. The movie is a pretty accurate. All this is actually in the Old Testament. Also there is a deleted scene with the wise man where they go over most of this.

34:27 This is how he figured it out, as anyone that reads the bible can to: (When God gave instructions concerning the building of the tabernacle and all the items to be in it, He specified how the ark was to be carried) They must carry the Ark by using two wooden poles inserted through rings on its sides, as touching the Ark itself will result in death at the hands of God. According to the Second Book of Samuel, the Levite Uzzah touched the Ark with his hand in order to steady it, and God instantly killed him. He orders all to bow, and keep their heads to the ground. In some illustrations, it shows the Levites wearing thick outfits, and the mouth rag is over their eyes not their mouth during a opening. So obscuring your vision, must prevent death. If that is the case that means this device is more of a punishment for those you don't tell to bow, or block your vision. This item would be a powerful teaching lesson and one that could wipe out army's. You could use this device to teach people how to pray and be humble during prayer. the ones that don't would be killed. You then say see if your not one with god, this is what happens to you. I can see God placing this device on earth, because man was kind of savage during many aspects of history. " Learn or die is the game here" (What happen when the Ark was taken, as a spoil of war) The Philistines defeated the Israelites in war and took the ark of the covenant of God. Excited to see what riches were inside the Ark, they decide to open it in the town square. A bright flash of light went out across the land, causing tumors and boils to those at the opening along with death. For the people farther out in the city, sickness fell on them. After being tormented by various plagues, the Philistines returned the ark. Samuel exhorted the Israelites to repent and return to the Lord. On the advice of these diviners about how to end the plagues, the Philistines made a guilt offering of five golden tumors and five gold mice (representing the five Philistine rulers). They then placed the gold along with the ark on a cart drawn by two milch cows, who head straight for Israel and didn't waver from their course. Once the Ark was back in it's owners hands, the sickness for the Philistines went away. (Where is the Ark now?) After the Babylonians sacked Jerusalem, it had found its way to Ethiopia, where it still resides in the town of Aksum, in the St. Mary of Zion cathedral. This church Claims they have and that it's guarded by hired soldiers. Few historians believe the ship transporting it, never made it to it's destination. The reasoning behind this is a two part ideal. 1. The Ship in question, never was seen landing at Ethiopia ports. 2. If this Church had such a powerful weapon like that, every government including Ethiopia would take it by force. Yet This church still claims they have it, and everyone is still alive. "so no one has opened it yet lol" The best place for this item if true, is at the bottom of the deep sea not in the hands of any religion or country.
