Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (Indiana Jones 5), takes Indy on an adventure through time, from the second world war to the second century before Christ... somehow (?). The movie as a whole is not the greatest and makes Kingdom of the Crystal Skull actually seem pretty good. But since everybody is making videos calling it bad, today I wanna highlight one thing it does well: using size-related writing tricks to make itself seem bigger like they used to do in the days of old-school Hollywood. If you can't afford to make your movie massive with expensive CGI like everyone else today, here's what you can do the same with writing.

@Julianjulesr1361 more consistent yes, but the 50s America part of Crystal Skull is still a lot more fun and exciting than most of Dial of Destiny and how it constantly drags its feet. I mean ffs the train sequence is so long, most of it just ppl walking in the cars, no creative sequences at all. Whereas the motorcycle chase in Crystal Skull after the diner scene is such Spielbergian fun (rewatch the clip on yt, a lot more fun than Dial of Destiny's chases)

The problem is that they had some good ideas but with very poor execution and the problems that are created were closed very poorly. For example Indiana is accused for murder of his colleagues but we never see any serious consequences. They just forget it. Or every time he escapes the bad guys they always find him first at the next sequence. And all of these because writers need to end movie and not have a normal escalation of acts and consequences

That's just modern Disney writing in general. In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, RiRi Williams blows up a police blockade, presumably killing or injuring several officers. This is never addressed again outside of a vague line from Shuri basically saying that she smoothed things over with the US Government, as if RiRi hadn't intentionally committed murder.

1980's movie The Final Countdown did kinda pave the way for a modern military to go back in time. The movie mostly dealt with a lot in ethics & timeline issues rather than the actual superior nature of modern vs old combat. I watched it as a kid and loved it.
@andrasbiro3007

It wasn't about war at all, I think. More like a classic time travel story with the usual paradox, but with a few interesting twists. Time traveling with a DeLorean is cool, but with an entire aircraft carrier is on an entirely other level. And it's very clever budget-wise, because I'm pretty sure they didn't pay for the ship, and they needed almost no other set. I don't know the story behind it, but it would be funny if they had a different movie in mind originally but didn't have the budget and were forced to shop around for some really cheap set. Like how Star Trek invented the transporter because they didn't have money for shuttles.

The worst thing to happen to Indina Jones was the CGI. Indiana Jones always felt "right" when it was real stunts, real shooting locations, and practical props and sets. The sheer existence of CGI in this movie, and Crystal Skull, makes it feel like a cheap knock-off of the trilogy that came before. Just compare the train sequence in Last Crusade vs the one in Dial of Destiny. One of them actually felt like it was filmed on a train, and the other one looks like it was rendered by Bethesda while Harrison Ford smoked a joint in his trailer.

Take for example Blade Runner 2049, that movie is huge and yet, it cost like half of Dial of Destiny and it looks way better.

I don't think is James Mangold's fault. His last 2 two movies (Logan and Ford V. Ferrari), are some if not the bests of his filmography, and they both show, that not only he can make exciting action sequences, but also a thrilling period movie, hell Ford V. Ferrari takes place in 1966, 3 years before Dial of Destiny, and it actually feels like the period is real, but Dial of Destiny does look and feel like all the mediocre movies Disney has made for the last 10 years, mediocre cgi, and not bad, but certainly not great execution, ad to the fact that they shot it during the pandemic, and well, we are left with this movie. I personally enjoyed it and also don't think there is a bad Indiana Jones movie, but yeah, this doesn't come even close to the original trilogy.

The only thing in this video I have to disagree with is the negative opinion of the ending. I found it to be one of the most interesting depictions of the predestination/bootstrap paradox (cool time travel shit), it was appropriately foreshadowed and provided what to me felt like a satisfying resolution. (7/10 would watch again) it's a shame it failed

Indy 5 felt like a breath of fresh air in the age of CGI-heavy blockbusters. I adored its nods to the classic cliffhangers of old serials. The unpredictability kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. Viewing WWII from a German lens was daring and added a unique layer to the film's narrative. The play on roles, like the CIA's passive position, was a fun twist that subverted my expectations. The chase in Morocco was reminiscent of those same classic adventure tales, and I appreciated the fresh spin on it. The Archimedes/German warplane vs. Roman fleet scenes are the sort of stuff that makes cinema magical to me. I genuinely believe that films that dare to be original leave an indelible mark, and this film is a testament to that. The character evolution showcased was both beautiful and poignant. All in all, this film may not be the best Indy movie, but it never had to be for me to enjoy it.

Funny, I had the exact opposite reaction. I thought Indy have been diluted just another CG blockbuster of today. Even Crystal Skulls, which was more digital, felt more unique. And seriously? WWII from the Germans' perspective is fresh? At least Crystal Skulls moved on with the Soviets.

I think the thing that really killed the movie for me was the part where Indiana Fucking Jones called the police. This wasn't our adventurous, ambitious, crafty Indiana, this was a sad, old man, who just wanted to be left alone. If day-of-retirement-Indiana had heard that Helena was in some sort of trouble in a different country, would he have gone? Younger Indy would have, because that's the plot of The Last Crusade.
@codyt821
@codyt821 6 месяцев назад
And then he slowly turns back into the old Indy we know as he goes through the adventure he was thrust on. It's called character development. He started out broken and lost due to age and regret, and had to find himself and be reminded of who he is throughout the film. Duh.
@MorningDusk7734
@MorningDusk7734 6 месяцев назад
@@codyt821 Should the end goal of a movie really be a character regressing to where they were at the end of the previous movies? Wouldn't it have been better to tell this as the story of Helena, the successor of Indy, learning how to live up to that mantle? Thus allowing us to continue to make movies in the Indiana Jones Universe, but also allowing our protagonist to not be so elderly that them riding a horse through the streets looks less like a heroic escape and more like grandpa having an episode.

I agree with all your points good and bad, felt disconnected when you were disconnected etc. but I thought the good points overwhelmingly overrode the bad. I liked the movie much more than the 4th - saw it twice in the cinema. I also thought the idea of the Antikythera Mechanism as the McGuffin was brilliant given that we've only known about its function since 2021, when the movie must have been long in production. While I realize that most people who saw the movie had not the slightest awareness of the actual device, I fully understood the Antikythera Mechanism and thought its slight adaption (identifies portals in time) and attribution (invented by Archimedes) was clever. The actual device is from the time of Julius Caesar and is the tip of the iceberg in terms centuries of scientific and industrial development. It is an instrument of incredible mechanical sophistication. There must have been many others with equal sophistication but since they were made from bronze, they are all lost - the survival of this one device was miraculous. Awareness of this entire technological industry had been lost for thousands of years until the functions of the device were discovered two years ago.

The "reverse to escalate" design is a great way to build tension in an action scene, but it has to be used the right way. The hero shouldn't be saved by the random lucky circumstance, but adapt to it and win thanks to his quick thinking. That's when the moment is satisfying, otherwise it feels like cheap slapstick, which is sadly a very common thing in modern CGI action scenes.

How does the sequence in Syracuse not make sense? It’s a bootstrap paradox. The device was not built by anyone. It only fell into archimedes hands because Indiana brought it to Syracuse because… and so on and so on. It’s been down in fiction many times.

what's kinda funny to me is that the final part with the planes of the army and stuff is _not_ new to me. Ignoring other mentions (like The Final Countdown), I've seen similar at least twice, in the two anime, GATE and Drifters (with a few others here and there). GATE has a modern military versus what's effectively a medieval fantasy world Drifters has figures from history all appearing in the same place to fight a war on alien soil, with the more immediate comparison to this film being a scene where a Japanese WW2 fighter plane shows up and takes out ground forces and dragons. Both lean more into _fantasy_ though, so I guess you could say that Indy's more realistic thing is new, but the overall "feel"... less so, to me at least.
