I remember I was in college in 1979 at SIU when Indiana State came to town on Feb 15, 1979. I had heard of Larry Bird but had never seen a picture of him, so I was expecting a black player. I was astounded to see this geeky looking white kid. The arena was extremely loud, as Indiana State was 21-0 and we were 9-10 and wanted to take down an undefeated number one ranked team and make national headlines. Bird played outstanding, but without the athletic gifts you would expect. He just knew how to pass, rebound and position himself. It was like he was playing with mirrors. We lost 69-68, the only 1 point win Indiana State had that season. We played them in the conference tournament on March 1, and lost by 7. We lost 10 games that season by less than 4 points. Bird ended up 33-1, losing to Michigan State in the finals.
Wow... Great time capsule moment. I have you ever seen so many sport coats and ties being wore to a basketball game? Things have surely have changed. Thanks for uploading this. Great fun watching this. I didn't have a chance to watch them back in 1979. ISU won this game besides the play of Gilbert. He was off that night. Southern Illinois gave ISU trouble most of the night.
Wow after watching this didn't realize the difference in play from then and now. Sure makes it easier for refs as they don't have to call many calls nowadays. No walking or traveling, charges or blocks, and carrying the ball. From the traveling calls I saw they would be calling all night in the NBA.
Yes, and that is kind of sad to some people, that the officials let so much go, especially in favor of the offense, in today's basketball. I'm one of the sad ones. To me, it is ruining the game. Nice comment.
Traveling at 35:20? Come on. My best friend and I tried to buy a gay bar in Terra Haute in ’78 and do a sports bar. (Keep in mind, this was before sports bars were ubiquitous. Dumb and broke, we couldn’t find the financing so went our separate ways. Had we pulled that trigger the year before Bird appeared? I’m thinking I would have had tickets for the Celtics.
