As a Christian and a Catholic, this form of music is very important to us. This is considered a prayer that is sung not to be confused with other forms of music that is praise and worship. I always feel close to Christ when I listen to this form of music.

I always feel like it's important that people know this. And that it is Psalm 51.

if you like this type of music I recomend you the visigothic mozarabic chants (also catholics), really old chants from the 7th and 8th etc. centuries, that come from the visigothic church in the old Hispania (today Spain), you can still hear them today in Toledo and many other churches in Spain, like Dum pater familias (pilgrims anthem), Pacem meam, Ad pacem or Surgam et ibo, etc. the first one is specially beautifull

@@ryukaganzerofulyou should read the original text sing in this hymn. psalm 50. It’s the lament of David who committed adultery asking for God’s forgiveness. Without the religious aspect, just the lament of someone who wronged another person, while humbling himself to the divine authority to whole he had sworn loyalty. And recognizing that vows of marriage are not just to your spouse, but to God, and to have broken that vow, it’s something most people with any sense of humility can relate. And Gregorio Allegri made such a beautiful score to accompany the words, but not just accompany them, every single note was deliberate, and intended to convey the emotion, the sense of apologetic sorrow, guilt and shame, And each verse, by the cantor or the choir was composed to convey emotion of each verse. Especially “Redde mihi laetitiam salutaris tui: et spiritu principali confirma me” that part comes in strong fro. The start, as opposed to most other choir verses having a slow soft beginning. It starts strong, and the building of the overlapping “confirma me” just hits hard if you understand the meaning. Not just a beautiful song, but a true masterpiece of scripture manifesting through song.

Apostoli. Amen. ❤❤❤❤❤

The music’s astounding beauty is nothing compared to the beauty of the text. The words are King David’s prayer to God, begging forgiveness for what he did with Bathsheba and her husband Uriah. Recommend asking a Syrio-Malabar Rite Catholic priest about that… and the significance of being sprinkled with hyssop. It’s deep.

this form of music doesn't include musical instruments, because is part of the worship to God throughout the centuries of the Catholic Church. thats why when you are in Church you don't chant, you listen uniting your heart in worship to God. I hope you will have the opportunity to experience it live. You will cry out of joy!

Thank you for reacting to one of our most beloved Catholic Mass hymns, meant to be a lament from King David to God for his terrible sin. It was meant to be sung (for Mass) only at Tenebrae (Good Friday, during Lent), the day Jesus (Gésu) was tortured and murdered on the Cross.
@hypsyzygy506
@hypsyzygy506 7 месяцев назад
The Mass is *not* celebrated on Good Friday or Holy Saturday (to commemorate the passion and death of Jesus). Tenebre was a service of psalms and readings during which all the lights (candles) were extinguished as a symbol of the darkness covering the world. Churches would then stay dark until Easter Sunday when a fire would be lit, from which a very large Easter Candle would be lit, and from this the 'light of the world' would be passed throughout the congregation, each person lighting a candle from that of their neighbour and lighting those of their neighbours, until everyone holds a lighted candle. The large Easter Candle would remain in the church for the entire Easter season (50 days, until Pentecost).

Oddly enough, although this is the version most familiar to audiences, it's not actually the original. Particularly, the infamous top C is down to a transcription error in the 19th century. I sang this as a chorister many years ago and it is very challenging to sing but incredibly rewarding. For the history behind this remarkable piece, and how it evolved over the years, this video is most interesting: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h6hD8YtO5HI.html

YT and recording doesn't do a lot of this kind of music any justice. The acoustics of a live performance in a building designed for it make it outrightly mesmerising. Literally. Ignoring the releigious aspect of it entirely, it is simply written to be moving ... and it fills that function entirely.
