For Eastern Orthodox priests and monks - the beard is seen as a symbol of maturity, piety, and dedication to their religious calling. It is considered a sign of respect and a visual reminder of their commitment to their faith and the ascetic traditions of monasticism. In the New Testament, the apostles and early Christian leaders were often depicted with beards, and Jesus Christ himself is often portrayed with facial hair in Eastern Orthodox iconography. In regards to fasting according to the Eastern Orthodox faith, the two primary fasting seasons are Great Lent and Advent. Great Lent lasts for 40 days and is a time of intense spiritual preparation leading up to Easter. Advent, also known as the Nativity Fast, occurs for 40 days before Christmas and focuses on preparing for the birth of Jesus Christ. In addition to these major fasts, there are several other fasting periods and days scattered throughout the liturgical calendar. The purpose of fasting in the Eastern Orthodox Church is to cultivate self-discipline, focus on prayer and repentance, and foster spiritual growth. It is seen as a means of purifying the body and mind, detaching from worldly desires, and drawing closer to God. Fasting typically involves abstaining from certain types of foods, such as meat, dairy, and oil, and may also include restrictions on the frequency and quantity of meals. Furthermore, every Wednesday and Friday are considered fasting days regardless. Wednesday is associated with the betrayal of Jesus by Judas, while Friday commemorates His crucification. Finally, the difference in the structures and understandings of authority between the two traditions played a significant role in the split between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church in the Great Schism of 1054. I hope my explanation has answered a few of your questions! I’m always more than happy to help. Source: I’m an Eastern Orthodox Christian.

Are there differences between the core beliefs of catholics and you guys? for example I heard that orthodox people venerate icons and pictures but I dont know if I would believe that. are there any such major differences between these 2 branches?

@@bernard3303Eastern Orthodoxy venerates icons, the Orthodox church is different in seemingly small ways to people who are unfamiliar to Christian theology, but to those who know, the theological differences cause problems when it comes to the union of what was once a connected unified body.

During Great Lent, Orthodox Christians abstain from animal and derived products (ie. they're vegan) for 40 days. Many also abstain from olive oil. In addition fasting also takes place every Wednesday and Friday to be able to take communion.

I would like to add, that to part take in communion, you should also be confessing your sins to your spiritual person aka confessor, that will also inform you what what you need to do, i.e. abstain from communion until you have fulfilled what he has given you to do, and you need to do it and cannot go to a different one for repenting to get a different result. Also, to take communion, it is a 3 day fast and no eating or drinking on the day prior to taking your communion. At least for a Greek Orthodox. God Bless

As an Orthodox Christian we know that when Jesus gave Peter the keys as it is written in scripture, that the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven aren’t Peter/the Bishop of Rome, instead the keys to the Kingdom are Peter’s confession that Jesus is the Lord and Messiah. Forgive me if I’ve written that in a confusing way.

A little late, but here is a historical fact. It was very common, especially in the Middle ages for a Patriarch(Orthodox High Priest) to take a weapon and defend their country, even organize the defense and logistics. However, there was no Patriarch that organized a crusade. On the other hand, the Vatican priests never touched a weapon in their life, but they organized lots of crusades.

As a Catholic theologian I would say that the differences between the Catholics and Orthodox can be divided into few sections. You are right that most of them are cultural and historical. As Catholics we don't say that Orthodox pray in a wrong way or their liturgy is incorrect. We consider it as historical and cultural differences that are normal and allowed. Actually, parts of the Catholic Church are Eastern Catholic Churches, which have liturgy, traditions, laws and prayers very similar to the Orthodox Church. The Church is global, so it has different forms. What really matters is what we believe. I think the differences are actually 3: - the role of the Pope (commenting it is not neccesary) - tha Ecumenical Councils - the dogmas The Orthodox Church believes that Ecumenical Council is the highest authority in the Church and that the Church has already 7 of them. Some of the Orthodox acknowledge 1 or 2 more, but of a lesser rank. They stopped having new Councils after the 1054 schism, because of the doubt if it could be truly ecumenical and to focus on the doctrine already established. The Catholic Church has never stopped calling its Councils and now is 21 of them and counting. All of them have equal rank. Catholics also proclaimed few new dogmas after the schism. The Assumption of Mary, the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the Purgatory, the Indulgences etc. Most of these things are not rejected by Orthodox, but they are not dogmas. The Orthodox have different opinions about it and various theological tradiotions. Some dogmas are really close like Assumption and some very far like Indulgences. It also has its reverse side, but to be honest the Orthodox tend not to dogmatise things and Catholics quite the opposite. Some things like the famous Filioque are considered closed as an issue between the Churches after theological dialogue. So main difference is the Pope. Then history. New councils and new dogmas, which strengthened the schism. Orthodoxy focused on preserving its beliefs from the 1th millenium. Catholicism became more dynamic and bold in a matter of doctrine (and law) and its development. It's because the different sense of authority. Catholics consider Pope as a rock of unity and faith. So they tend to rely on him, that he will stop all the mistakes. Orthodox rely on the Ecumenical Councils, but after schism they are not totally ok with calling them. Ofc there are at last cultural things and theological tendencies to emphasize some things, which make the differences seen much bigger than they are. Btw I love your videos. Your opinions are very reasonable, thoughtful and open-minded.

A couple of points from an Orthodox perspective - -Firstly, regarding our leadership, we do believe that the pope has primacy (but not supremacy) and he holds the title of "First among equals", however, since he is in schism from the church, he is unfortunately not our head. We do still have Peterine succession though (Bishops who are direct successors of the Apostle Peter) in the form of the Patriarch of Antioch (Peter was the first bishop there) and the Patriarch of Alexandria, which was also established by Peter. We believe that church tradition, and the fathers/saints, does not support the idea of papal infallibility, or Supreme authority. -On the involvement of Children We (Orthodox) want our children to be educated in the faith as well, but we don't believe that's a good reason to prevent them from receiving the Sacraments through their developing years. In fact, what better way is their to teach them about the faith than to raise them in the full extent of it? Also, keep in mind that communion is considered vital in traditional Christianity for one's spiritual well-being, preventing someone from receiving that until they reach a so-called "age of reason" is generally regarded by the Orthodox as being quite troublesome and even dangerous. I've met many Catholics that agree with these principles, and want to revert to their original tradition in that area of adolescent Sacramental involvement. - Orthodox priests generally have beards to more closely resemble Christ. But it's not a requirement. Finally, if you'd like a more in depth analysis of the differences between the 2 faiths, I'd highly recommend watching "Seraphim Hamilton's" videos on yt. His videos are long, but very informative. God bless and love to my Catholic brethren!

As someone who grew up as a Catholic, had first neighbour Orthodox and another Sunni Muslim, and family friends Bektashi Muslims I have a bit of knowledge about theme. So in my family there was a 3 forms of fasting. On friday you can fast (1 meal a day) and no meat (children, sick, pregnant and people working really hard work are excluded) or no food at all. 40 days before Easter light fasting, prayer and no food on couple of days 2 weeks before Easter. Fasting as a type of sacrifice combined with meditation and prayer for someone close can last indefinitely (my mother for my sinful atheistic soul). Fasting is considered if you eat 1 meal not enough to satisfy hunger or no food at all. Usually beside Friday we did 1 other day (tuesday or wednesday). So this is how real Catholic should behave. Most of Catholics have patron saint for themselves and Orthodox have one for family. And there are also Catholic Orthodox, they follow a pope but rest is like Orthodox, and usually use Old Church Slavonic language. Prostration is for special form of prayer for heavy sinners, adamant devotees and priests. There is holy water and ointment. As for beards, well roman tradition, I know a lot of priests with beards of all sizes and forms Catholic and Orthodox. In reality we call each other on our holly days or at least bring cakes and food, mostly old people practice their faith strictly (maybe because death is close?). Of course you will not offer a Muslim alcohol or pork but most do consume it except in Ramadan and Kurban Bayram. And there is a thing with making sign of cross, we do it with 5 fingers - 5 wounds of Jesus and Orthodox with 3 - Holy trinity. And Orthodox have messed up calendar and priests can marry, but some choose celibacy. Orthodox Catholics priests can also marry and are trying to push that into Catholicism. If Catholic priest have a child he is responsible for child and mother. For Croats Catholic church had a lot of compromises because Orthodox church and Islam,. Also Islam for Bosniaks and Albanians has a lot of compromises. That is the only way to live together. Basically don't be an asshole and respect your neighbour otherwise blood will flow and nobody wins...
@borisjevic6338
@borisjevic6338 Год назад
Hi, I would like to agree with most points that you have made, but would disagree with some of the language used. Your sentance: and I quote ". And Orthodox have messed up calendar and priests can marry, but some choose celibacy." is degrading and/ or ignorant. Many countries and religions around the world follow their own calendar. Muslims have their own calendar, I take it that you most likely are a Croat, no issue there and the Serb's of what I know have 2 calendars like the rest of the Orthodox except the Greeks, that they follow the previous calander, so they have a religious calendar and the "western" business calendar. Japan also has a different calendar too and same with India. So, please do not say that others "have messed up", who is to say that your calendar isn't the one that is messed up? Now, in regards to the second part: "priests can marry, but some choose celibacy." The priests that marry cannot go higher beyond that rank, only unmarried priests can. A major difference is also, that Orthodox celebrate the Saints Name that they have and is called Name Day and shouldn't celebrate their birthday, since then they celebrate themselves instead of the Saint of whose Name they carry and of which is a celebration of their life with God, as the Name Day / Patron Saint is when they went to "sleep", not died, as we believe in an eternal soul. Yes, during fast, only fish are allowed on Wednesday and Friday except for when in lent, then those can also be restricted and at times cephalapods are allowed when fish are not. In regards to: " For Croats Catholic church had a lot of compromises because Orthodox church and Islam,. " same with many Orthodox Churches, but it falls under tradition 🙂 God bless. p.s. I follow the Greek Orthodox church of which follows the Gregorian calendar, like most western countries, while the rest of the Orthodox follow the Julian calendar but our Easters coincide due to the way that Catholics and Orthodox calculate their Easter.

For the pope, there are differences in how things are read. Roman Catholics read the keys in Matthew 16.19 as an exclusive prerogative given to St. Peter. However, the Orthodox understand the keys to be the power to forgive sins, and so all the Apostles received the keys since the same prerogatives in Mt. 18.18. Thus the chair of Peter is shared by the whole episcopate. A good show of this comes in the book of Acts at the council of Jerusalem. Peter was there, but he did not preside. This difference in reading appears in the Fathers. Where Roman Catholics see a reference to Peter, they always see the Pope, but the Orthodox see the pope as having authority only insofar as he stays in communion with the rest of the Church and holds to the traditions of the faith. The difference played out tellingly in St. Cyril's dispute with pope St. Stephen. They were disputing about baptism. St. Cyril, in his "On the Unity of the Church," insisted that Christ established only one chair of Peter and argued the pope had left it. Later, because the language was so strong, this work was edited so that he affirmed what Roman Catholics think today. As a result, two versions of this book are now extant. In virtually every Petrine prooftext, there is an Orthodox who says, "What's the context?" because we simply don't read them the same. The Filioque is downstream from the differences about the pope, but wasn't touched on enough. The problem comes up in that when it was made, anathemas were leveled at anybody, without exception, who would change it. Thus the Orthodox believe changing it constitutes heresy, i.e. any changes without an ecumenical council. The pope did change it, and so claims authority even over the councils. What the insertion even means is secondary to "Was it permissible to even change it?" Another distinction is the doctrine of grace or energies. Because of a grammar technicality, Latin couldn't properly translate the Apostle Paul's use of the Greek words for "energy." As a result, Orthodoxy worked out the Greek text so that we cannot know God's inner being, but we can know him through his activity, which is also a category of being, and we can literally be a part of it while still being separate. However since these two modes of being couldn't be articulated in Latin, they didn't make this distinction such that God's being is always beyond us. I'm grossly oversimplifying, but it very much is one of the most important differences. Here is a video with an interview on it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--280DS1W4BU.html There are many other differences the video didn't touch on. Most Orthodox see sin as a contamination, or a disease. Roman Catholics see it primarily as a legal problem. Indulgences are downstream from this, because they assume we can merits that wipe away sins, and indulgences are extra merits earned by saints that can be used for others. Orthodoxy has no such conception, because our framework is different. "Merit" is a Latin-specific doctrine. Orthodoxy doesn't believe we can inherit guilt from our ancestors. Roman Catholicism makes it a dogma and builds the immaculate conception on top of that. There are lots more I could pile on, but most of them would seem minor from the outside. We are very close, but the differences are also very deep.

I am an Orthodox teen going to a catholic school so I have a pretty good idea of the differences. The two main ones are the pope and the Filioque (the statement added to the Nicene creed by the Catholics). Also this video didn't touch on the theological difference between East and West, some Theological differences are the catholic belief of purgatory (the orthodox say there is no purgatory), and Catholics tend to focus on sin and how horrible we are, as opposed to Orthodox focusing on looking to Christ and focusing on the resurrection. Also a question for Muslims: why do you not believe That Jesus Christ is God? especially when it is made clear in the Bible, example, in john 20: Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”. Part of the idea behind the indulgences was because in the past, aftee people went to confession, they would often have to do very heavy penitences, but because sometimes people were not able to do those penitences, the church would allow them to do a lighter penitence instead. So instead of a heavy fasting, they replace it, either totally or partially, by praying and doing acts of charity for example. This gave origin to a lot of abuses, since a very common form of obtaining the indulgences was to give donations to the church, which was one of the reasons for the reformation, and later they made more regulations of what was allowed when granting indulgences. There's more aspects to it, but those are a more complicated to explain.

The concept of Peter being the first pope is strongly emphasized by Catholics. Originally, there were 5 patriarchs of the 5 biggest communities of Christians. It was only late that the Patriarch of Rome, the Pope (reminding you that pope in Greek is the equivalent of "father", as in a priest), pushed the idea of primacy, around the end of the 10th century, which led to the schism between catholics and orthodox that happened in the 11th century. Also, there are differences between Catholics and Orthodox that lie on the nature of the belief itself and I can't honestly explain properly because it is the stuff of a theology course, with strong roots in ancient and medieval philosophy.

The essential difference between Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy is that between the Roman and Greek views of the world. A bit late to this one but I can't find any comments about this so I'll add it anyway in case you still look at your older videos... 3:00 There is a difference between fasting and abstinence. Here you are describing abstinence: we abstain from alcohol and certain foods (and shun other actions and thoughts, similar to Islam during your time of fasting) on certain preparation days in our calendar, and are still encouraged to do so on Fridays (and some would also say Wednesdays) throughout the year just as the Orthodox do. Fasting, on the other hand, is true fasting (except the church doesn't say you are not allowed to drink, because that would put too many people at risk of long-term health problems). Only 2 days of fasting remain in the Western Church's calendar: Ash Wednesday (the beginning of Lent) and Good Friday (the end of Lent). There are several exemptions: those too young or old, those ill, and those doing necessary heavy manual work who may eat enough to "maintain strength" for their labours. People with those exceptions are encouraged to abstain when not fasting. The difference with Christian fasting that some people say makes it watered-down and not real fasting, is that the Church says it only means 1 main meal per day, and one small meal (a snack like breakfast) to "maintain strength" (as above). This definition allows some of us to decide to "fast" throughout the 40 days of Lent to mirror Jesus in the desert, and in this way we very much mirror Islamic fasting (differences being we don't care about hours of sunlight but still only eat one proper meal in the day, whereas I have know some Muslims who wait until after sunset and then have a huge blow-out, indulging in gluttony, which remains a taboo to us during the season of fasting).

1) Kids below a certain age (around 7) do NOT participate in church. They get baptized as soon as possible though (normally at their firat 40 days), because the baptism is the procedure the grants you your personal guardian angel. This personal guardian angel is supposedly, the entiry that will try to raise you in the eyes of God, when you die and you pass through His judgement. It is your representative against your sins that are represented by demons. 2) The actual reason for the beard is to show that these people have abandoned their care for earthly and aonful things, such as their looks, because their looks is there to attract other people and sin. Therefore, they are supposedly showing their dedication to a life with as few sins as possible.

Actually the whole thing with St Peter being the rock on which the Church is built is one of the major issues of controversy between Protestants and Catholics. Protestants believe that when the Lord said 'Thou art Peter, and on this rock I will build My Church', He was referring to *Himself* as the rock, not Peter. So Protestants would also say that Jesus is the only head of the Church. Though the main communion of Eastern Orthodox Christians do have the Ecumenical Patriarch based in Constantinople (Istanbul), who is supposed to be the first among equals of the Patriarchs. However since recent geopolitical events involving Russia and Ukraine, the Russian Orthodox Church and the churches under its authority are in schism from the Ecumenical Patriarchate and no longer acknowledge his authority. Which illustrates the pitfall of having churches under the control of the state and bound up in national identities. Whereas pretty much all of Western European Mediaeval history illustrate the pitfalls of having secular authority subordinate to spiritual authority, as it is in Catholicism. In Islam of course this issue doesn't arise since your secular and temporal authorities (at least while the Caliphate was still around) are one and the same ;)

And like you said, our faith and countries were directly linked, which is ideally what Muslims want to have. And I agree that it would not cause the issues you brought up in the various Christian groups. What’s the basis on Protestants and Catholics differing interpretation on Peter? Our Catholic lent lasts, as you rightfully said inspired by Christ's fasting, for 40 days before Easter which gets broken on the day of the Lord (Sunday) and every Friday is also a day of lent. And yes it is different from Muslim fasting and meat is banned, many other things can be depending on the regional tradition also banned (e.g. in Germany monasteries rediscovered beer brewing which was originally drunken during Lent as eating bread was also banned here). Nowadays, besides the no meat eating, fasting has become a lot more individualistic, so many people will e.g. not use the internet during that time, don't watch TV, stop smoking or breaking some other habit that is part of their everyday life

As towards the minor differences: the reason for the split was predominantly due to politics: at that time the Roman emperor of Byzantium and the Pope were in a power struggle over who was in charge of the church. Eventually the Pope declared the Frankish King Karl der Große/ Charlemagne to be Roman emperor while eastern Rome was ruled by the widow of the deceased eastern Roman emperor using the vacancy to name a champion of his own against the power of the east. For a long time the emperor was regarded as being higher than the pope (hence it was the Holy Roman Empire) in Catholicism all the way up to the investiture crisis when Pope and Emperor fought openly over who was in charge and a separation between worldly and religious power was introduced in the west. So in their core essence Catholicism and Orthodoxy are the same church that got split mainly due to political reasons (there was also some religious struggle over iconography at the time that played into it) and have developed differently due to the political landscape and traditions of their respective people since, however on all the major topics we are still in much more agreement with eachother than e.g. the protestant (except Anglicanism, which is basically Catholicism without the pope, again a split due to political not religious reasons) denominations
@helpfulldeadguy8150
@helpfulldeadguy8150 Год назад
A big reason these two groups split was that the apostles split up and traveled around and found churches everywhere. The last churches they found usually had sway over other churches in matters of doctrine to nearby churches. Peter's church in Rome had sway over a large group of churches and as they saw other apostle churches fall either through war, intolerance of christianity, or bankruptcy they cemented their rule originally as a means of banding together to more effectively aid eachother. This grew until the modern Catholic church you see today while the Orthodox resisted this centralized form of leadership for Patriarches that govern regions, but not central figure.

About the clergy: in orthodox christianity, there are 3 basic ranks of priesthood, a deacon, a priest and a bishop. A deacon and a priest can be married or unmarried ( of course the monks can only be unmarried ), but a priest cannot marry after his ordination. A married priest cannot become a bishop. The bishops are strictly celibate. Also, women cannot enter the priesthood at all, although there was the institution of deaconesses but that fell out of use the last millennium of so and frequently there are discussions for resurrecting it, but you know, when a tradition is solidified, it's difficult to change in the Orthodox Church. Women can be monastics as well, but in separate monasteries.

Biggest difference that divided the catholics and orthodox churches was something called "Filioque". Catholics claim that Holy Spirit comes from both Son and Father (as all are part of the Trinity) while orthodox say Spirit only comes from Father. Also, the holy items can get crazy. In the middle ages two churches (one in France, other in Germany I think) claimed to have original John the Baptist's head. Also in book called "Krzyżacy" (semi-historical work detailing polish war with the teutonic order) there is a merchant of relics. He had archangel Gabriel's wing feather, a plank from ladder Jacob dreamt about, rust from st. Peter's keys to the gates of heaven and st. John's sweat from his fight with a dragon. The character is a satire, but really this was how some scammers worked in 15th century.

As a Catholic, it is true that there is a lot of disinformation about indulgences, especially if we are talking about the controversy in the 1500s when Protestantism began as a reaction to it. Basically indulgences could consist in giving money to the Church but not because you can buy forgiveness or authority from God (which is called simony and it is very bad) but rather it was used to finance St. Peters Basilica in Rome. Catholics think that using beauty to decorate churches is a way to honor God and a useful way to elevate the faithful's mind to Him: think about those sad grey blocks used in post modern architecture who make many people depressed just by looking at them, well Catholics wanted to avoid it.

To clarify, indulgences are not for the forgiveness of sins, and while there are instances of people selling them, it has always been a condemned practice. To recieve forgiveness of sins, both Catholic and Orthodox acrually have the same practices(baptism and the sacrament of reconciliation, or perfect contrition in some circumstances). I think non-Catholics get confused because the Catholic church has a different concept of what forgiveness actually is. We believe forgiveness offers salvation because it erases the eternal consequence for sin. However, we believe it doesnt erase the temporal consequence. Temporal consequences help us grow on earth, and also have the effect of cleansing our souls to prepare us for heaven. Purgatory is the final cleansing of the soul, a final temporal consequence for those already saved and bound for heaven. Indulgences are simply a remission of those temporal consequences, gained through acts of prayer and charity. It is possible because ultimately, temporal consequences and acts of prayer and charity have the same effect, they work to fill us with the grace of God.

Regarding Indulgences, you're right, what was stated is odd. That's because the the presenter, unfortunately, doesn't understand the theology of Indulgences. Indulgences do not pardon sin and they certainly do not "license the commission of future transgressions." The Sacrament of Penance pardons sin, but Indulgences are granted to those who have satisfied Divine Justice so that a soul is either completely released from Purgatory or the temporal punishment is reduced.

The great schism is rooted in a dispute over the the Nicene creed when the pope attempted to add the words “and the son” (line 29) about the nature of the holy spirit. The Patriarch of Constantinople took the position that the pope could not just change church doctrine as he was FIRST but first among equals the pope’s position was that he was FIRST thus asserted the Primacy of Rome. The Nicene creed was used as a measure of standard beliefs of who was a Christian and who is not. There is more nuance but this is youtube not a seminary.

@@MuslimMindsUS He wanted to add it to the Nicene creed, which is “similar” in function to the Shahada. The addition (called the Filioque) was used in western churches since the late 6th century but not eastern churches. The Filioque explains that the holy spirit comes from the father AND the son. It is logical that if the father and the son are of one substance then if the spirit comes from the father it would also come from the son as they are two persons in one substance. But this is a deviation from the creed as it was set down in the council of Nicaea in 325. The definition of an indulgence is the remission, either partially or fully, of temporal punishment due to sins. One of the conditions to obtain an indulgence is you have to be in a state of grace, i.e. free of any mortal sins. To get a plenary indulgence, meaning all the temporal punishment is remitted, you also have to be free of all venial sins and all attachments to sin. Indulgences don't grant you forgiveness for sins or remit eternal punishment for them.

When someone repents, God removes his guilt (Isa. 1:18) and any eternal punishment (Rom. 5:9), but temporal penalties may remain. One passage demonstrating this is 2 Samuel 12, in which Nathan the prophet confronts David over his adultery: “Then David said to Nathan, ‘I have sinned against the Lord.’ Nathan answered David: ‘The Lord on his part has forgiven your sin; you shall not die. But since you have utterly spurned the Lord by this deed, the child born to you must surely die’” (2 Sam. 12:13-14). God forgave David but David still had to suffer the loss of his son as well as other temporal punishments (2 Sam. 12:7-12). “Above all, let your love for one another be intense, because love covers a multitude of sins.” - ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭4‬:8 “For almsgiving saves from death and purges away every sin.” - Tobit 12:9 Judah and his men “turned to prayer, beseeching that the sin which had been committed might be wholly blotted out” (2 Macc. 12:42). Judah also “took up a collection, man by man, to the amount of two thousand drachmas of silver and sent it to Jerusalem to provide for a sin offering. In doing this . . . he made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin” (2 Macc. 12:43, 46). Thus, Judah not only prayed for the dead, but provided for them the then-appropriate ecclesial action for lessening temporal penalties: a sin offering. Accordingly, we may take the now-appropriate ecclesial action for lessening temporal penalties- indulgences.

@MuslimMindsUS I'd argue it's not started by someone, but rather the result of a difference in interpretation of salvation in the bible. Catholics point to verses in the bible that indicate a soul must be cleansed before it can enter heaven, and other verses that indicate that justice still requires the existence of temporal punishment even though the eternal punishment(hell) has been forgiven. With this interpretation, one could infer that, 1. Since a soul must be perfect to enter heaven 2. Observation shows that saved persons are still imperfect and sin and 3. Justice requires penance for sin, there must be a place/process where a saved person can recieve that final cleansing and remission of the consequences of sin and that place/process is called Purgatory. I have more info in another comment too!

Orthodoxy and Protestants do not believe that Jesus made Peter the head of the church. The verse that the Catholics used to support this is Matthew 16:13-20 Orthodox and Protestants would interpret this as the 'rock' the church is built on is what Peter said, that Jesus is the messiah and son of God, and not peter specifically. He was given the name peter because he knew this before anyone. I have also heard that in the original Greek the words for the rock he calls Peter and the rock the church is built on are different words. He calls simon Peter, but the rock of the church Petra. The next part of the keys of heaven and hell the Orthodox would view as something jesus was saying to all the apostles and not to peter specifically. Protestants would interpret the keys as either belonging to all Christians or specifically to the apostles at that time.

The fact that Orthodox priests have long beards and Catholic priests do not is due to culture and tradition, as has been said by you in the video. There are passages in the Old Testament that favour the wearing of long beards as righteous men, but these are not considered necessary by the Catholic Church, as the New Testament is silent about beards. Another reason, at least that's how my Catholic priest explained it to me, is that in the course of the division of the Roman Empire and the invasion of the Western Roman Empire by the Germanic and Hun peoples, beards were seen as something pagan and barbaric, since Huns and Germanic peoples usually wore long beards. Therefore, well before the Great Schism, it developed in such a way that no beards were worn by the clergy in the West, while it is still prevalent as a practice in the East today. Hope that helps as an explanation!

I don't understand the point of modern Ramadan fasting. You don't eat while it is sunlight, but when it becomes dark, many Muslims at least here in my country basically hold feasts where the whole family comes together. I don't know if that is the point of fasting, abstaining for 12 hours just to then indulge in more food than what you would eat the entire day while not fasting. I have met one Muslim man that is very extreme during Ramadan, he eats and drinks nothing during the day and at night he eats one date, one flat bread and drinks 1.5l of water, once after dusk and once before dawn. And after hearing how he fasts, I really started doubting the way other people fast.

But if he must (fill it), then one third of food, one third for drink and one third for air.’” Myself, my friends, and my family never indulge in Ramadan and by the end of month we eat little due to the consistent fasting. If there are Muslims that fast incorrect it’s just that. Muslims making mistakes, so I would definitely keep in mind the difference between the faith and followers. Similarly in other faith traditions like in Christianity many people do not uphold the actual tenants of the faith but that is not reflective of the faith itself. Lastly it’s permissible to enjoy good food with family to a certain degree as the point of fasting is not to torture yourself, but rather test yourself during the daylight ours and showing willingness to obey God for his pleasure and to gain God consciousness. -Rohaib

Hi guys,good work! I ll try to give some info as an orthodox. -we don't have any Pope figure,but as we actually are nationally divided,every orthodox country (with few exceptions)has its own patriarch. We all supposed to pay respect&"obay" to the "central"/Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. -fasting.If an orthodox follows the fasting days, there are really too many,but for everyday people, is no meat wendesdays and Fridays and only bread and olives during the holy week of Easter. - Icons. Orthodox iconography is a chapter of its own. There was an 90 year civil war in Byzantium during the 6th century,called "the battles for the icons"(ΕΙΚΟΝΟΜΑΧΙΑ) between the ones that believed that we must not have icons at all and the ones that believed the opposite. - In orthodox confession,we don't actually been forgiven,but given by the priest the guarantee that if we really repented we shall be forgiven by God. -Beards!😅 Orthodox priests and monks don't shave their beards and do not cut their hair as an indication of mourning for the passions of Jesus. - Relics. (really everywhere..)there are so many,and supposed miraculous. - Wifes. Orthodox priests can not be married unless they were married before they become priests. Hope I was helpful!

3:16 Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights, in Islam you are required to only fast until the sun goes down, so.... what is stopping muslim from eating everything that they did not eat during the day? i think Orthodox fasting is more consistent.

I AM GREEK ORTHODOX (ORIGINAL) THREE ARE THE MAIN DIFFERENCES. 1. THE UNMISTAKABLE OF POPE , WE DONT ACCEPT. 2.THE HOLY TRINITY , FOR ORTHODOX THE HOLY SPIRIT IS EQUAL TO CHRIST UNDER THE FATHER. 3. THE ORTHODOX COMMUNITY PRIESTS MUST BE MARRIED FIRST. IF I MIGHT SAY , ORTHODOX PRIESTS ARE MORE INTERGRATED IN EACH COMMUNITY AND THEY ARE MORE FORGIVING ON THE SINS OF THE PEOPLE. THE CAN BE FARMERS , BUILDERS OR HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS , TOO . THEY TAKE PART IN THE PARTIES OF THE VILLAGES , IN CRETE AT LEAST I CAME FROM THEY ARE GOOD TRADITIONAL DANCERS...... THEY DRINK WINE.

For Christianity, brothers and sisters. Psalm 135: 1 Praise the Lord. Praise the name of the Lord; praise him, you servants of the Lord, 2 you who minister in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God. 3 Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; sing praise to his name, for that is pleasant. 4 For the Lord has chosen Jacob to be his own, Israel to be his treasured possession. 5 I know that the Lord is great, that our Lord is greater than all gods. 6 The Lord does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths. 7 He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth; he sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses. 8 He struck down the firstborn of Egypt, the firstborn of people and animals. 9 He sent his signs and wonders into your midst, Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants. 10 He struck down many nations and killed mighty kings- 11 Sihon king of the Amorites, Og king of Bashan, and all the kings of Canaan- 12 and he gave their land as an inheritance, an inheritance to his people Israel. 13 Your name, Lord, endures forever, your renown, Lord, through all generations. 14 For the Lord will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants. 15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by human hands. 16 They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. 17 They have ears, but cannot hear, nor is there breath in their mouths. 18 Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them. 19 All you Israelites, praise the Lord; house of Aaron, praise the Lord; 20 house of Levi, praise the Lord; you who fear him, praise the Lord. 21 Praise be to the Lord from Zion, to him who dwells in Jerusalem. Praise the Lord.

hello, im catholic but dont have a lot of experience with orthodox cristians, yes catholics believe that orthodox are really close to us, we recognize that their sacraments and their priests are valid and that they have apostolic succesion like us, we pray for unity the 2 major diferences are indeed the papacy and filioque as one comment said, filioque is latin for "and the son" catholics proclaim that the holly spirit procedes from the father "and the son", orthodox believe that the holly spirit procedes only from the father. the orthodox do have bishops and they are the leaders, they have churches that govern themselves but maintain comunion with one another, the bishop of constantinople is refered as the first ammong equals, but its not like the papacy. he is the primary spokesman for the orthodox comunion there was a great schism in 1054 the bishop of rome(the pope) and the bishop of constantinople excomunicated one another and we remained divided since then, but in this thousand years of history divided we didnt drift apart that much, we both remained were we are, considering how the protestant reformation went we are really close, protestants leaved the church for half the time and i dont even know what to say about the results there

@@MuslimMindsUS You could get an indulgence let’s say if you were sick and dying. A priest would grant you one so you could be purified before you die. But it a circumstance where you are healthy and not going to die for a while probably, then you could earn one by doing good deeds like donating to the poor, teaching others about Jesus and his ministries, or even just helping out the community by cleaning streets or organizing fundraising events. Others things you could do are acts of suffering or penances. Some acts include giving up some of your meals for the day, wearing uncomfortable clothes, or even just sacrificing some of your privileges. Spiritual things would include praying an extra rosary for the day or reading extra verse and chapters of the Bible. To get an indulgence you would need to do many of these things not just a few and you need to do them often.

Matthew made e distinction translating the word ‘kefa’ (stone in aramaic) in greek as ‘Petros’ (for Peter) and ‘petra’ (for rock). The early Church Fathers (beside Augustine and Ambrose) recognized a primate of honor in Peter, not jurisdiction and therefore the ‘petra’ was Christ (according to their position but also Scripture, where Paul and Peter themselves reffer to Christ as the Rock, and also the OT teaches us God is the Rock). Also there is no ‘the Holy See’ but ‘Holy Sees’ for all the apostolic successions and the most important ones are the Petrine Sees (Rome Alexandria and Antioch), Constantinople reserves a special statut as founded by Andrew (the first called among the apostles, from wich the term ‘primus inter pares’ comes) and Jerusalem for being the first Holy See founded by James the relative of Christ.

Orthodox here The Orthodox position on the pope is that yes, in Matthew 16:18 Peter is ordained the first bishop, and then the other apostles are granted the same authority later. I don’t remember the exact verse. Thus all bishops are equal, but we give special honors to certain bishops and give administrative duties to certain other bishops. tl;dr all bishops are equal in the eastern view. The early church didn’t have a supreme bishop, it had 5 important administrative bishops called patriarchs, the only patriarch outside of the eastern half of the empire was the pope whose seat was diapostolic in other words, 2 apostles died in Rome, so the west developed the doctrine that the pope was supreme over the years, partly supported by a series of forgeries and mistranslations of certain documents from Greek to Latin. The clerical beard vs no beard thing is just a difference in ascetic tradition that developed over the years. I might be wrong but it is probably based on the difference between the monastic rules since in the east our monasticism has its origin in Saint Basil the Great and in the west the basis is Saint Augustine(?) The Orthodox fast is just different from the Islamic fast, traditionally it is cut out all meats, animal products, alcohol, and cooking oils or something to that effect. In the Bible we are told not to flaunt our prayer or fasting, from that perspective the Islamic fast, as I understand it, where you don’t eat in the day but eat anything in private at night seems strange. There are particular feast days where the fasting rule becomes less strict or is exempted If I remember indulgences are derived from the Roman Catholic doctrine of purgatory where you can do a good work of some kind and receive a certificate that you receive a reduced sentence in purgatory for lesser sins. Eventually indulgences develop well past what it was, for instance, the Pope gave a blanket indulgence to all crusaders, and eventually corrupt clergy sold indulgences to raise funds and enrich themselves. They later become so corrupt it triggers the Protestant reformation This video doesn’t go over the doctrinal differences only the mainly cosmetic ones

Grave sins incur both guilt and temporal punishment. They both 1. sever you from the divine life of grace and 2. Incur a merit for punishment. Indulgences only remove the latter, and only for forgiven sins Sacramental confession (or the anointing of the sick, in extreme cases) is required to remove the former. You also cant buy indulgences.

The Pope himself is a Patriarch. The Caholic Church simply broke away from the other 4 Churches. The Patriarchs of the 4 other Churches: Constantinople, Jerusalem, Antioch and Alexandria all have equal status as the Pope. The Pope was considered First among equals. However, the Pope wanted to be supreme over the other Patriarchs and thus he broke the Pentarchy and proclaimed himself infalible (One who couldnt make a mistake and one without sin) which literally is a heresy because he is human and thus prone to mistakes and sin no matter how holy.

The video kind of glossed over the hierarchy of Orthodoxy. Orthodoxy does have leading figures, they just dont have a single universally powerful leader like the pope. And instead of having a unilateral figure like the pope, we have Patriarchs. Any major decisions regarding the faith needs to be unanimously accept by the Patriarchs via a council.

An indulgence cannot get you out of hell, but it can lessen your time in purgatory. In Catholic belief there is heaven, hell, limbo and purgatory. Limbo is for unbaptised babies, it isn't heaven but there is no torture like hell. Hell is for the wicked and those that haven't accepted the faith. Purgatory is a way station beween heaven. In Catholic belief you must be cleaned of all your sins before you can get to heaven. While you're alive the church can keep wiping your sins but if you die with some sins that haven't been forgiven then you wont go straight to heaven. You'll be in purgatory for a long while before you can get to heaven, sometimes up to 10,000 years. An indulgence is given by the pope to lessen the time in purgatory. These are given out of the churches kindness. You can get them while you're alive by helping the church. At the time of the reformation the church was selling indulgences. Luther thought this was wrong and found there was no scripural basis for it, or for indulgences or even for purgatory.

I know the reason they broke apart, or at least the excuse and actual difference in belief. The differences you're describing happened during a thousand years where they drifted apart. Ok, are you ready for it? It's a translation mistake. You don't believe me do you? There you go en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filioque en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_filioque_controversy. If you're bored of reading all those walls of text I'll summarize it. Around 300's the priests had a meeting where they decided how divine stuff works and how they must worship and pray. So they agreed that the Holy Spirit "derives" from the Father and is respected and praised by both the Father and Son. The word "derived" I used was the cause of the error in translation, although a translation for the Greek word exists in Latin, it's not 100% the same. In one language it means it derives and in the other it means in comes before. So some western churches started using this word to describe that the Holy Spirit comes before (is respected) by both Father and Son, but for eastern church it meant that it derives, "comes from", and the eastern priests didn't like it. That is the only difference in the belief, the rest is just differences in worshiping and traditions. Recently in 2021 I think, Pope Francis admitted that they got lost in translation...

I am Orthodox and my wife is Catholic. The majority of the differences come from the beliefs of the three parts of God as well as the focus of belief. In Catholicism the holy spirit comes from the father and the son whereas in Orthodoxy the spirit comes from the father only. Moreover the focus in Catholicism is on the death of christ whereas in Orthodoxy the focus is on the restriction. Also orthodox is more in line with the historic early Christian practices than the more modern practices of the catholics. With out priests being permitted to being married prior to being ordained as well as the use of iconography and a keeping of the mysteries of God. But that last point is more of an opinion on my part.

Wow, guys, I don't beleave your channel hasn't blown up yet in terms of popularity. You seem to be really interested in the topic and know much more about Christianity and its denominations than the majority of Christians know about each other, nevermind the other religions. Keep up the good work, I have a feeling sooner rather than later your insightfulness and humor will bear fruit and reach wider auditories. Also, I've been raised as a Russian Ortodox, but currently consider myself an atheist, therefore I think I can provide a somewhat unbiased look on Catholics vs Orthodox issue. First of all, the underlying conflict is connected to how the Roman Empire functioned in late Antiquity: even before embracing Christianity and splitting the Empire in two the Romans had a lot of differences in the Western and the Eastern parts of the Empire, the biggest of which was the language. Western Empire spoke predominantly Latin with some local variations here and there, and the Eastern Empire was speaking and writing Greek. The Christianity originated in Palestine, in the Eastern Empire, but a sizable denomination of Christians have soon formed in Rome and some other Italian cities. The outskirts of Western Empire stayed predominantly pagan for many centuries, while the most important of the Christian authority centres have been located on the territory of the Eastern Empire - Antioch, Alexandria, Jerusalem and Constantinople all became the seats of the Patriarchs with each one of the four administering their own part of the Empire without necessarily being subordinate to one another. In the Western Empire though, only Rome became the center of Patriarchy, with the Patriarch being, you've guessed it, the Pope. Therefore, the dynamics between the Patriarchs and the civil authorities was quite different, especially after the Empire has split formally: the Eastern Patriarchs have become more and more subordinate to the Eastern Emperor, while the Western Patriarch - the Pope - comprised the sole highest religious authority in the Western Empire and has grown more and more influential as time passed. As the Western Empire has finally collapsed and was replaced by various barbaric kingdoms, the authority of the Pope persisted, and the institutions of the Church became the unifying force in the fractured cultural landscape of Western Europe of the Dark Ages, with some bishops (who the Pope appointed) being more influential then the local petty kings. Therefore, by the time the large part of Western Europe was once again unified under the strong lidership of Charlemagne, the Pope represented less of a regular church figure and more of a supreme authority, able to crown and excommunicate kings and promote his own agenta across the continent without relying on a backing of a single ruler. The Eastern Patriarchs, however, have largely lost their influence once the Islam rose in Arabia and conquered the majority of Alexandrian, Jerusalimian and Antiochian Patriarchates, with only the Constantinople seat remaining functional - but too close to the Emperial authority to push its own agenta. Therefore, the Eastern Church was much more dependent on the state and much less of a self-governing institution

initially the division was mainly political. after the division of roman empire (western/eastern) in 4th century and fall of western roman empire in 5th, eastern empire (byzantine) was supposed to be recognized as the sole roman empire by the pope and western church. in order to preserve his and his church power and authority, the pope moved away from eastern empire and gave the title of roman emperor to the germanic rulers that conquered western empire and they in return recognized papal authority over their territory. this leads to one of the main theological differences between western and eastern church which is the believe in western (catholic) church that church teachings/ideology is not set in stone and that it can evolve and be interpreted differently over time. since the pope has supreme authority and is infallible (another thing that was added more recently to catholic teachings) he can make that decision. in eastern church change is less likely to happen. now in short if we look at main christian denominations (protestant, catholic, orthodox) and their highest form of authority it would be something like this: protestant: bible catholic: pope/church orthodox: traditions/history

There really is no such thing as giving money to the church to buy forgiveness or erase sins, if there ever was such a thing. People can ask for forgiveness for sin through prayer to God. The idea likely comes from Catholics often donating to the Roman church to fund church repairs or to help build new churches in the medieval and Renaissance period.
