The young bass player is Guy Pratt. Two years after this tour, he married Gal Wright - Richard Wright's daughter. He still tours with Nick Mason and his band, "Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets", with whom they play early Pink Floyd music, mainly from 1967-1970. And if David Gilmour goes to any gig, Guy always goes with him as bassist. The other great guitarist is Tim Renwick who, apart from Pink Floyd, has played with such greats as Elton John, Procol Harum, David Bowie, Mike Oldfield, Eric Clapton, David Byron. He has worked with Pink Floyd (or Gilmour) since 1984. At this concert he had the honour of playing a guitar solo on Another Brick in the Wall - and famously...

Richard Wright was the sound of Pink Floyd! If you listen to anything pre Dark Side, his keys just provide so much texture and layers as they were working to find their voice and sound. Basically their catalogue up to and including the Animals album just illustrates how he could fill the aura and create that sound for which PF was famous. Yeah, he was such a key contributor and never got the praise he deserved while he was alive. Which truly was a shame. The man was a legend, unfortunately overshadowed by Gilmour & Waters, and even Barrett’s mystique. Shine On wouldn’t be the opus that it was without his keys and so many more of their legendary compositions, such as Echoes, Time, Us & Them, Great Gig, etc., all with writing credits to Wright, just prove how great he was and what an influential musical artist he was. He painted the landscape on which the rest could stand. RIP Richard Wright! Never forgotten.

Ritchard did appear at Pompeii with David, it was the last time that they played 'Echoes ' ,David retired the song after Ricks death, I personally think that it's Ritchard playing the organ and keyboard in the background that creates the Pink Floyd sound.

@@MoreMeetArthur Guy Pratt of course replacing original member Roger Waters. Looks very young here, actually 32 (ok that's younger than the others, around 60). He married Richard Wright's daughter a couple of years after this (since divorced). You were shocked at 2.5k views after a week for One Of These Days. This has 7.2k after two days. You say it's difficult to play slowly like they do and I'm sure it is but it was Chopin who said it's not just the music it's also the space between each note! They never try to keep up with themselves in other words they never get in a hurry and they play the song as fast as it needs to be played not extremely fast just to impress someone! The name you're looking for is Guy Pratt and he actually ended up being Richard Wright the keyboardist's son-in-law! If you want to see the cool lights coming down on David Gilmour do the final song in their three song encore "Run Like Hell" in this same concert!!

Nick pulls the headphones off during the Live 8 performance, and talking about guitars here is another little factoid , straight from Guy Pratt's book ' My Bass and other Animals ' , when he went to the audition to replace Roger he was in the green room waiting for David and found a guitar so he picked it up and started noodling about on it, when David arrived Guy mentioned that he thought it looked like an older/ early Fender and David replied that he wouldn't find 1 any older so Guy checked the serial number and discovered that it was number 00001 .

One of the few guitarists that can do anything but doesn’t - there is just enough restraint in that solo so that it still serves the song rather than sounding like it’s shredding for the sake of it. To create a solo that long and keep it melodic and interesting is mind blowing! Love it

The bassist in question, Guy Pratt, is a MAJOR studio player - among his credits, he worked with Michael Jackson (notice the incredible bass part on MJ’s epic “Earth Song”) and many more. It’s certainly testimony to Pink Floyd’s cachet that a studio player of his caliber would ever put off his lucrative studio work and accept a concert tour commitment like this.

Everyone refers to the outro featuring Gilmour's unparalleled performance as a "solo". Except it's not just him playing, the entire band is playing with him, supporting him in the background and every now and then rising up for emphasis, like the drums when the ball drops etc. It's more properly an "instrumental" performance. The fact that it's not just Gilmour by himself takes nothing away from his performance, it will forever live as one of the greatest moments in live music history.

Great reaction gents!! I see Comfortably Numb - I click!! Seeing other people react to this masterpiece of a performance always takes me back to the first time I heard/seen it - and it's glorious! IMHO this IS the greatest live solo - it gives me chills every time (and I've listened to this hundreds of times!) - the tears come with the preceding song - Wish You Were Here - for personal reasons. You're thinking of Gilmour's Live In Gdansk where Rick Wright (RIP) was on stage with him! I HIGHLY recommend checking that version of Echoes for another mind blowing experience! They are 'one' of the greatest - I hold Rush, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles & Queen in the same company...can't pick out of those 5 (Rush might top it for me...and if you haven't listened to them, you need to!) Cheers from Canada!

As already mentioned, Richards keys are the rock that supports the Pink Floyd sound. The mood of the music comes from Richard first, often a Hammond or similar, and often added to by strings .......but that mellow Pink Floyd sound is Richard........ And he sings a lot more than we think. He often sings opposite David in a call response but most of us think it is all David, as they often sound similar.
