Hi guys. A lot of people have already commented that the date of independence is 1945 not 1949. I chose 1949 because that's when the Dutch were finally gone. But I probably should have said 1945 because that's when independence was declared, and it's better to use the date chosen by Indonesians themselves. Thanks!

He read the fact correctly. The dutch actually admited Indonesian's independence in december 1949. While after the japan colonization and declaring lose in world war II, Indonesian immidiately declaring independence themselves in 1945 and struggling from the colonization of the dutch, england, etc from 1945 to 1949.

indonesia declared independence in 1945, after japan lose war. dutch (with western country support) that has gone from indonesia coused be outcased by japan for 3,5year come again to force claim indonesia. And dutch not officially admit indonesian independence until 2005. So please, any westman in the world, dont trust your west data about indonesia. come to indonesia if you want to know about indonesia, many lie in indonesia data that west country and media give to the world.

I was traveling throughout Indonesia and made it to all provinces in Indonesia. What amazed me the most about the country is the differences. It was so diverse that every time you cross the border between provinces, you’re entering to a whole different world. It was very jaw-dropping just to imagine that you can find conservative Islamic Aceh, to the party island of Bali, and tribal communities of Papua, all of them in a single country. That was just wow for me.

Indonesia was not, is not and will never be Islamic country. World map is inaccurate since Mercator projection 1569. In reality Indonesia is huge as Russia including our ocean and even much richer. Even much bigger before West and Middle East came took our former Australia, Singapore, Malaysia+Brunei, South Thailand, The Philippines, Vietnam even Madagascar Africa. Actually countries in Europe are just regencies and provinces in Indonesia.

back in the day, there are pretty much confusion about India. Because european used to named India after every land they discover. Remember Columbus, he thought he landed in India but he's not that's why he named the native there Indian. Same thing happened with Dutch, they thought Indonesia was India, then after that they discover there are two India (the one is Carribean that Columbus discovered, and the second is Indonesia), so to solve this confusion they named Indonesia as east India, and Carribean as west Indies. cmiiw

Wow! You have to wonder how many people miss their flights. Luckily it never happened to me. I have a client here in Japan who's the CEO of a fairly big trading company, and he often travels around Asia on business. He was in Jakarta once and had to get to the airport, but there was a terrible traffic jam. So he offered the taxi driver an extra $50 to do whatever it would take to get him to the airport on time. So the taxi driver drove on the wrong side of the road, into the oncoming traffic! That side of the road was much less busy). Then the taxi got pulled over by the police. So my client told the police that he would give each of them $50 too. So, the police turned on their sirens and escorted the taxi to the airport --- through oncoming traffic. Hahaha.

Hi Paul, an Indonesian by birth place, raised, and nationality here.. I'm highly appreciate your video about my country.. It was quite balance in terms of geography, history, culturally speaking.. Yeah, it's kind of odd to see that the Dutch has colonised Indonesia for 3+centuries, yet their trace are almost invisible in Indonesian culture.. Maybe it's due to many of rural Indonesians still hold some grudge toward the Dutch, because they exploited their area but made no development there.. But anyway, I hope other people find your video as informative and educative as I had.. :)

Indonesia declared independence in 1945 but was only recognized by the Dutch in 1949 after a series of fights. However some countries had recognized Indonesia earlier than 1949 (e.g. Egypt, or so what my teacher taught me). That's the only thing that irked me but otherwise, it's a great and in all honesty a correct explanation towards my country. Thank you! :)

Indonesian independence is declared in 17 august 1945, year 1949 is the year dutch ended their re-colonializing campaign effort and acknowledge the soverignity of Indonesia. Telling the indonesian independence in 1949, is like telling americans that their independence is in 1783, forgetting their long and bloody struggle to defend and preserve their independence since 1776. It is only acknowledgement from the imperialist point of view.

Mesir pun baru mengakui tahun 46, jadi kalo dibilang merdeka tahun 1945 masih ada bintangnya. Kedaulatan satu negara harus diakui oleh negara lain, kalo nggak ada yg mengakui ya nggak sah.

Terima kasih banyak, Paul! As an Indonesian, I really appreciate this video. Indeed, Indonesia is most famous of its beautiful scenery. And yes, Jakarta is the city with the worst traffic in the world. Anyway, Indonesians declared independence in 17 August 1945 and the date has been celebrated ever since. After that, there was a time of national revolution because the Dutch wanted to keep their control of Indonesia. The revolution ended in 1949 with our independence secured. The UN apparently decided to formally recognize our Independence date as 27 December 1949.

As I expected, a lot of Indonesians commented on the 1949 independence date... I'm Indonesian and let me help clear the situation Paul, technically you were correct to say that Indonesia became independent in 1949. However, for decades ever since then students at schools were educated to call 17th August 1945 as Indonesia's independence day, being the day when Sukarno made the declaration of independence. To have full independence, a country must have de facto independence and de jure independence where that de facto independence is recognised by law. Indonesia acquired de facto independence on 17th August 1945 when Sukarno made the declaration and acquired de jure independence on 27th December 1949 when Queen Juliana of Netherlands recognised sovereignty of Indonesia. It is quite a sensitive subject among Indonesians who were mostly indoctrinated to hate the Netherlands as the "colonialist". Even the Netherlands today have acknowledged 1945 as the independence year to normalise and strengthen the relations between the two countries but unfortunately public sentiments have been largely unchanged. Fact of the matter is, like it or not, Indonesia achieved full independence by 1949 when a de facto declaration had been made and the former colonist acknowledged the independence, as well as recognition by the United Nations. Some Indonesians might say "go to hell with the Dutch and the UN" but these are simply enraged patriotism that resulted from decades of education. I'm Indonesian and from an objective point of view, I would say that Indonesia's independence was fully achieved in 1949. With that in mind, when you mentioned the independence, it might be best to list both years and pointing out the controversy behind it to avoid offending some Indonesians. Apart from that, I'd say this is a good piece. Great stuff!!

Irfan, then you are thinking the way THEY are thinking. NO, that's not it. Independence is where and when we think we are independent. I don't personally give any s**t about others think or write. For me and most of Indonesian, August 17th 1945 is the independence day. whether there is another such 1949 is just there are some people outside indonesia in the world state it and not represents the people who has it (The Independence). If you, Irfan, say that you are born at 17 August 1945 but other people recognized your date of birth at 27th December 1949. How would you say and think? I hope the last question I mention, will make you change your mind about the TRUE INDONESIA INDEPENDENCE DAY.

Well, correct me if i am wrong. But base on my understanding, independence is an independence. Either it's full independence (de facto and the jure) or not full independence (Just de facto). I am totally aware of how a possibility of some politicians and 'people' with interest who trying to change the history to the way they wanted it but I do believe that our independency were declared on 17 of August, 1945 and that is our independence date. Those date on 1949 is the date when The Netherlands acknowledged our independency not our Independence date and that doesn't really matter for us, as Indonesian.

@GEOfocusChannel
@GEOfocusChannel 8 лет назад
+mykka alessandro de oliveira Thanks Mykka! Yeah, a lot of people think Indonesia is just a few small islands with a small population, like Tahiti or something. But it`s big and is densely populated, especially Java. I took a train ride across Java once and it was like a non-stop chain of villages the whole way. Indonesian is quite simple in its textbook form. So you can learn to speak like that quite easily, and most people can speak like that with you. The more challenging part is the casual language which has a lot of abbreviations and dropped syllables, slang, etc. It`s the kind of thing that`s hard to learn without living there, but I managed quite well without knowing much of the casual language. It was just a bit hard with young native speakers in Jakarta. Most other people spoke it as a second language so they stuck to the textbook language a little more. Wow, that was 10 years ago! I haven`t spoken it since then.

+mykka alessandro de oliveira +GEOgraphy FOCUS As far as intonation, I haven't noticed it from my wife who speaks Bahasa Indonesia and Javanese as native languages but perhaps Paul can clarify. Absolutely Paul, words are shortened literally ALL the time. You'll have words that are 3-4 letters long and they STILL have a shorter form. Indonesia is absolutely underrated. The train ride through Java as well as experiencing the urban centres of Indonesia are quite the sight. Highly encourage anyone who loves nature or is into anthropology to check out Indonesia, there's more going on than meets the eye.

Misu Satriyo we don't have the right to name the whole island like Borneo because the island have multiple countries in it, so the island name should follow international name. it different case with Sumatra, previously named Andalas island. we have the right to change the name from Andalas to Sumatra because the whole island only have one country in it, Indonesia

If im not mistaken, the reason why in Indonesia we don't see much influence from the Dutch was because of the way that the Dutch was colonizing back then. They didn't go for the 3G(gold, glory, gospel) like all the other empire, but instead they go only for the trading profits. Hence, not much influence was impacted during colonial times.

Hello there! Greetings from Indonesia, I want to request a video, about Mount Krakatoa (pls do a part two of this vid, and include the informations that i give you) 1. Krakatoa makes the moon blue at one point (bcs of the ashes, and yes BLUE!! 💙💙💙) 2. Krakatoa killed more than 36k people and destroyed 2/3 of the island (Rakata Island) 3. The explosion of Krakatoa is considered to be the LOUDEST sound in the modern history, with reports that the explosion could be heard 3000 miles away! 4. The eruption of Krakatoa mountain is one of the most violent volcanic events in history 5. The eruption was equivalent to 200 megatons of TNT - about 13000 times the nuclear yield of the Little Boy bomb (in Hiroshima) and 4 times the yield of the Tsar Bomba (THE MOST POWERFUL nuclear device EVER detonated) (Based on wiki, and these are only some of the facts about Krakatoa) Edit = i misspelled two 😂😂

Great video, Sir! Thanks for explaining my country. I like how you explain it. I like when you explain about the capital of Jakarta. I agree with you and I personally dislike my country capital haha. And for the year of independence, the correct one is on 1945. However, personally, it's okay for me if you get wrong on mentioning the year of independence of Indonesia since 1949 independence was where de jure and de facto recognition took place. Yeah, sadly the Dutch didn't want to spread their cultures on us. I personally wanted them to spread their cultures on us and we finally could speak Dutch.
@dreamchasingcat
@dreamchasingcat 8 лет назад
You mismatched between the meaning of those Dutch terms with the associated years when Indonesia gained independence. De jure or "by law" we gained independence in 1945, but de facto or "in reality" we only had them Dutch to actually leave us for good in 1949.

Kerstkrans Ya-Mian we don't have the right to name the whole island like Borneo because the island have multiple countries in it, so the island name should follow international name. it different case with Sumatra, previously named Andalas island. we have the right to change the name from Andalas to Sumatra because the whole island only have one country in it, Indonesia

As natives to the island, my people have the right to call the island the name that has always been in use by our ancestors, Kalimantan. If Malaysia and Brunei want to refer to the island by the name given by their former colonial masters, Borneo, it’s up to them. But don’t tell use what to do with our ancestral name for the island.

As I observe , Kalimantan is a good place to build its capital even though there are not a lot of people it is at the heart of Indonesia , there are not that many volcanoes nearby and earthquakes there are lowest in Indonesia but Java is a nice place , it's very fertile and good trades come from there so geographically Kalimantan is better but economically the best place is Java

a little correction we are actually independent since 17th of august 1945 however the dutch are still trying to take over indonesia by doing aggression twice (if i remember correctly) the aggression took place on a few major cities in indonesia however we are already declared independent by law. other than that ita a great video!
@GEOfocusChannel
@GEOfocusChannel 8 лет назад
Yes, a lot of people have commented on that. I said 1949 because that's when full independence was achieved on the ground, but I know the declaration was in 1945. I should have said 1945.

@MrKardoman 8 лет назад
what do you mean by full independence? 1949 is the year of Dutch recognize Indonesia's independence. Before 1949, there are many countries who have declared a recoginition of Indonesia's independence..
@pearmertesacker
@pearmertesacker 8 лет назад
Kardoman Tumangger yes we were declared as an independent country by 1945 but we were still trying to get the NICA and sekutu away from our land when theres still a lot of war like bandung lautan api, medan area and many much more in major cities. And papua were still in the hands of Netherlands since they are not mention in linggarjati treaty, only 8 province were in our hands. and in this treaty they mentioned that we were to create Uni indonesia-belanda under the queen of Netherlands. And netherlands are still doing military aggression twice. So yes by law, we were independent. But i dont think we were fully independent until those aggression and treaty are done.
