In this video, a lovely lady from Indonesia takes time out to compare the differences between Indonesia and her current home at the moment, The Philippines.... #manila #indonesia
I don't think my fellow Filipinos realize, but the reason she says we Filipinos are Pacific Islander is because most 3rd gen Filipino immigrants in the US aka 90s kids onwards claim Pacific Islander ancestry because it was cool, especially in California. 😂 Indo lady sounds like she went to school there if she's 35.
100% correct. It is Filipino Americans who live in the coast that keep on claiming the Pacific Islander name, even though the Philippines is literally geographically located in South East ASIA. Those Filipino Americans take it as an insult to be even told by actual Pacific Islanders, like Samoans that Filipinos are not Pacific Islanders. It is more crazy for the woman to say Filipinos and Indonesians don't alike, considering the people are indistinguishable from each other when it comes to physical features and stature, the languages are even closer to one another relationship wise. The Southern Philippines practically has many Malaysians, which also is indistinguishable from Indonesians. My Auntie from the Philippines moved to Indonesia for a short term contractual work in tourism promotion and she already spoke four Filipino languages. She was shocked she understood conversations in Indonesian without having ever studied it.
@@alanguages it’s also worthy to note that when you look up “Malay archipelago” the Philippines is literally included in that. So not only is it incorrect to refer to the Philippines as Pacific Islander, it would mean the entire malay archipelago isn’t Asia.
as an Indonesian, we actually know that the Philippines and Indonesian people share the same ancestors, especially the Sulawesi people. 🤔 that lady has to read more.
Saying Filipinos aren’t technically southeast Asian is the dumbest thing someone can say. Not to mention highly insulting since the Philippines has has a LONG history of trade and contact with the rest of Asia. Parts of it was literally under Brunei rule and some of the ancient kingdoms paid regular tribute to China. Also it’s a founding member of ASEAN. It’s like saying the Uk and Ireland aren’t European. How is that not Asian?
Just let them be...hahaha There's always misconception on us...for Asians, we are semi-Spanish, for Westerners we are not too Asians. We'll I'm embracing our difference, that's the result of our very long contact with the West. I'm already tired of explaining, if they see as Spanish, then "Ole!"...hahaha
As A Filipino American yes technically were Asian by geography and Race. But Culturally I feel more aligned to Mexicans and Islanders than with the rest of South East Asian or East Asians. I lived and Worked as ESL teacher in The Philippines too from 2010-2015. I mainly worked with Koreans and I used to get into discussions with them about how they also don’t feel Filipinos are Asian in a cultural sense but at time they feel at ease by it too because Asians are very competitive with one another and they never feel that with competitiveness with Filipinos.
@@martialway81 you’re primarily talking about East Asians. Southeast Asians in general are more relaxed and fluid when it comes to time. I’ve been around Southeast Asia and yes each country is different but there are a ton of cultural similarities they have with the Philippines. You sound like you haven’t been to any other ASEAN country
@@irwinmier484 Don’t need to go to any other South East Asian country When I can find everything that South East Asia has to offer and better in The Philippines my homeland. You probably think your special for that 😂.

As Indonesian i am sorry for what she said. I am sure she skip geography class. For me Philipine and Malaysia has 90% similarity with Indonesia. Like korea and japanese
We are true South East Asian. We are more Austronesian than Indonesians actually. We can be Pacific Islanders too BUT only becoz Philippines is in the Pacific Ocean which is the same with Indonesia.
another funny comment when a big percentage of Indonesians are Austronesian stock. There are however, melanesians in indonesia.... fyi Pacific Islanders eg. Polynesian's heritage is also Austronesian
My fellow Filipino: please pardon the Indonesian lady said that you are not south east Asian... Its her own opinion and she is most likely not a learned person. I (Indonesian) know that you are also part of south east Asians, by linguistics, Tagalog goes into the Indo Malay group of languages. There is a proper term which I am not so acquainted

Indonesia are slightly similar to the Philippines; the only difference are history, food, and religion. Indonesia was a colony of the Netherlands, while Philippines was Spain on the vice-royal to Mexico for 333 years than pass to the Americans. Religion makes culture different, the Netherlands was reformed and did not put much effort into converting the Indonesians from Islam, while the Spanish as Catholics more or less demanded it.
@@benktlofgren4710 Yes that too. But it is beyond religion. It is a cultural assimilation from which the Spanish/Mexican rule the land with an iron fist that had a huge impact that shape Filipino and our society and that lead to our identity.
What is she saying? If we're pacific islanders, then indonesians are pacific islanders as well. Indonesia is also a group of islands floating in the pacific. and theyre also austronesians just like filipinos. We're actually much closer to China geographically to be honest and the very first chinatown was from philippines so if there's someone who's more asian it would be filipinos. I dont think she understands what she's saying and she actually makes inaccurate and very ignorant point. Is she trying to elevate her kind and make herself feel special so she discredits and strips us of our identity? IRONICALLY, YOU CAN SEE THE PEOPLE IN THE BACKGROUND LOOKING mORE ASIAN THAN HER, ACTUALLY.
The majority are in understanding because it's an objective fact. You can look it up on google. Filipinos have always been southeast asian. Indonesians are no different since were both Austronesian.@@TravelwithSaj89
Girlie didn’t know that filipino originally the most related to native taiwanese (austronesian) and somewhat related to southern china ethnic groups, just to call filos “pacific islander”
You are also ignorant that Pacific Islanders too are actually Austronesians. They are more Austronesian actually because they retain their original animism like the Ifugaos. The Malays and Indos have lost their original Austronesian culture, adhering to Hinduism and Islam.
@@jonirojonironin5353 nope compared to Filipinos and native Taiwanese Pacific Islanders have mellanesian genetic mixture, which is non in filos & native taiwanese, yes PI retain the animist tradition but doesn’t mean they are 100% similar genetically to filos & native taiwanese, furthermore filipino genetically is more similar to Native Taiwanese than javanese and malays in peninsula, I literally studied this in my thesis year why I gonna be ignorant 🤭
@@Nicky-zm5yb Nope. Filipinos also have Melanesian genetic mixture due to the presence of the real natives of the Philippines, the Negritos. Negritos are Melanesians and even if they were not, Negritos are certainly not Austronesians. Austronesians were not the original inhabitants of the Philippines. Indonesians even have more Melanesian mixture.
she made an uninformed remark by saying the philippines is not in southeast asia or filipinos are not southeast asians. pacific islander? technically by definition, that's true, and so are indonesians. i would've expect more from her since she's indonesian, a fellow southeast asian, and most of all, a radio presenter. more informed, especially at 35. i've not heard of the term pacific islander until I moved to the US. I believe the term originated in the US for purpose of statistical records, groupings, research and study. immigrants and US born are classified according to ethnicity. It's actually Asian American and Pacific Islader Heritage month now (May)
Jay what a wonderful insight ..she's catching a lot of heat from that statement.. it's interesting as I'm learning alot through these debates and discussions ...
What the heck not Asian? Only Filipinos who grew up in the west or half Filipinos who grew up abroad call themselves Pacific Islander but all Filipinos who grew up in the Philippines 100% consider ourselves as Southeast Asians and not Pacific Islander, only difference is that we are mostly influenced by the US rather then Europeans. Sorry but as a Filipino who was born and raised in the Philippines, I find it insulting and insensitive if you call us not Asians and a Pacific Islander. And what do you expect with the food in the Philippines coz its 90% Catholics and Christians naturally you will not see a lot of Muslim friendly foods specially in Luzon and Visayas coz the population there is mostly Catholics and we love our pork and if we go to other countries we also respect their culture and food and we try to adapt and we dont complain coz we are the foreigners in that place.
Why are you insulted if you've been labeled as Pacific Islander, what's wrong of being a Pacific Islander? Pacific islanders do have better traits than us, they're more respectful especially on natures. So what's the big deal? Would it affects you as a person? Whether SE Asian or Pacific islander, it doesn't matter. What really matter is your traits as a person. SE Asians are no better than P.Islanders or other race/ethnicities and vice versa.

There's no such thing "Malay Race", that was just an invention of Professor Otley Beyer. We are the only country to use that terminology. Malaysians and Indonesian don't have that concept. @@TravelwithSaj89 "Cape Malay" is a misnomer. It was the name attributed to the Muslim slaves brought by the British to South Africa from different parts of South Asia and Southeast Asia. For Malaysians being an ethnic Malay means that you are a Muslim. That's why many "Malay Christians" can't get recognition from their local communities.

Austronesians came from Taiwan. Then they went down to the Philippine islands before spreading to the Pacific Islands, Indonesia, Madagascar, New Zealand, and others. Because of our proximity to china, we have a lot of genetic addition from that part. Western colonists also left some genetic imprints. But our mainstream traditional culture is very much influenced by Spain and late the US. We see neighboring countries' traditional cultures as exotic. The lady probably saw the huge difference and declared us as 'not Asian'. Indonesia's being Asian is more Indian (south Asia) while ours is not. While we have substantial genetic inputs from East Asia (that's why others wrote we are 'more Asian' than Indonesians), our culture is very much Latin.
Filipinos are southeast asian. Although there are many filipinos that are mixed with other ethnicity but they are still southeast asian. Many filipinos don't claim that they are pacific Islanders, only who claim that are filipino americans.

Filipinos are not Pacific Islanders, this has been proven. Filipinos are Austronesians the same with people from taiwan and the rest of south east asia. In fact archeological records show that human actvitiy in the philippines predates those in Indonesia and Malaysia because the AUstronesians went south from Taiwan. This is a fact both through genetics and archeological data. The reason Filipinos look different is due to the saturation of foreign blood and alot of chinese mix as well, cuz Philippines is more of a traditional trading post from Mainland China. IF you however, look at the Bisaya and people from mindanao they are starting to look like indonesians and malaysians. So excluding philippines as not South East Asians is a bad mistake for foreign policies of these nations.
Uh what? We're not Pacific Islanders tho. We're pretty Southeast Asian. We have more in common with Malays, sure, but most of us have Chinese ancestry if you look back far enough. Sure the Philippines is technically an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, but that's about it.
@@TravelwithSaj89 It's not that complicated. Most filipinos have chinese ancestry and culturally closer to Malays. Just because it's the "austronesian" subgroup doesn't mean we're Pacific Islander. 36% is the official number of Filipino with Chinese-ancestry. People forget that Luzon had a Chinese kingdom that were related to the Ming. I think she is speaking what other Southeast Asians in general their true perspective how they see us Filipinos They don't consider us as Asians. They have grouped us with other Pacific pokeysuans we beling with Guam, Micronesia, Samoa, Solomon Islands and other such pacific nations not Asian. In a way SEA natiins ir the whole East Asia for nany decades since mid-70's have looked down on us we are below them. Why do you think for years been calling us the "Sick Man Of Asia".
