Railway shunting & switching a short line railroad scrap metal dealer. Cincinnati Eastern Railroad CCET switching tracks and spotting cars at Cohen Recycling. A busy railroad crossing with gates and lights is right at the main switch. Railroad radio is included. Classic locomotives pull the train of covered hopper cars and gondola cars up to the customer in Macon, Ohio. An MP15DC and a B36-7 are working the branch line on this day. The entire switching process is shown from an excellent vantage point. I really love how this video came out! 4 empties were set off and 3 loads of scrap metal were picked up. Then the train is seen continuing on to drop off the covered hopper cars at Winchester Ag in Winchester, Ohio at the grain elevator. I have tons of videos of the grain spur being worked so just check my playlists for Cincinnati Eastern Railroad CCET. On the day that I filmed this there was a lot of traffic at the crossing. You can hear a couple of non railfans beep their horns. Lol. Listen to the awesome sounds of the locomotives working and listen to the sounds of the freight cars as they are being shunted about. Where else can you see a locomotive combination like this? I also included captions in the video to explain what they are doing. The train arrived with 2 crew members and a third member showed up in a pickup truck to help with the switching process. This speeded up the action to keep the crossing time fouled to a minimum. The old Norfolk & Western Railway signals in the background are bagged to show that they are no longer in use. The pole line with the glass insulators is abandoned also but it makes a great photo prop. I got lucky on this day because it was a rare sunny day in the winter in Ohio. Filmed March 4, 2021. Thanks for watching!

i remember the days of multi-mile coal trains, (some 400 cars or more) and it was a pure pleasure to sit in traffic an watch them. i specifically remember the N&W one in Lorain Ohio that had OVER 500 LOADED COAL CARS and 8 engines! they had to split the load onto 4 different tracks. took almost an hour to clear the grade crossing as they had to break the train while moving using the dpu's to push away from the rest of the train in sections. this happened back in the early 1980's.

@@michaelking3327 As a really small kid, we would see 5 - 6 mile long trains with five locomotives at the head of the train, three in the middle, and four on the rear of Southern Pacific trains. They were head across the desert from a mountain ridge as they were climbing towards the continental divide.

@@juangarcia-co5ve juan, you are partially right - they needed to get the job done. But they could have made a lot of people happy -not pissed off - IF they had cleared the crossing area at least once, Twenty minutes - too long - BAD RR PR

I wonder if anyone stuck at that crossing lost their job because they were late to work. Behavior of this sort is unacceptable. The railroaders could have cleared the crossing for a minute without failing to get their jobs done. No wonder the public has a negative opinion of railroads. Personally, I love trains, but there has to be give and take. 20 minutes blocking a road is not necessary, and is probably not legal, either.

I'd rather he piped it into the video directly, either on one channel or both because that rail squeal is painful when trying to listen to their directions. Maybe even record it to a small digital recorder and super-impose it over the train movement audio?

As a courtesy the crew should have cleared the crossing after pulling the loads. While not an excuse this is why people run gates. Hard to believe at one time those cars were factory fresh Now they're like warriors in an operating demo derby. With virtually no utility using steel cars the supply chain is left with aluminum cars with the curved bellys. Can they handle the rigors? Best oldies nearing the 50 year mark are former Detroit Edison now AMGX semi permanently coupled sets. Thanks JT for showing how those long freights have humble beginnings

Technically if the movement stops for more the five minutes that's when they have to clear the crossing. Where the movement is less than five minutes they don't have to. On the Boston and Maine RR we cleared a crossing out of respect for the motorous. Not only that, it was more time on the clock for us anyways and to keep the public happy.

Was the engineer here doing all the braking with the independent? Up to 20:18, the only air I've heard it's when he pulled the gladhand apart. Near the end, when he backed up to get the conductor, the lead loco's wheels were squeeling (they didn't squeel their first time on this piece of track,) and the lead wheels didn't seem to be turning (tho the trail loco wheels were.) Would the engineer have let the whole consist drag the lead loco (with independent applied) until it stopped, rather than apply automatic? That doesn't sound right.... I gotta be missing something. Just wondering your take..

Jaw Tooth strikes again! What a marvelous video. There is nothing more interesting than the day-to-day workings of a short line. It was fascinating seeing how they serviced Cohen Recycling. Personally, I think they could have done ie in an easier and more time-saving manner, but what do I know. The highlight of the video was Jaw Tooth’s commentary, almost like a play-by-play. It kept us in the loop by letting us know what happening when it was happening. Yet another reason why JT is heads and tails over other railfan channels who are simply content to show us big freight trains speeding by. The photography is terrific, not only sharp and well-positioned, but always on the move to give us an ultimate look at the train. It just doesn’t get any better than this.
@77thTrombone
@77thTrombone 3 года назад
Mr J Tooth also employs the young boy who operates the camera for him. Not only is he providing railfans a superior RU-vid experience, but he's also serving like an adoptive father for the poor young man. You gotta appreciate Mr Tooth's heart every time he tells the boy to roll the video.

As a UK railroad modeller with an interest in US practice, this is the first time I was aware that another crew member (conductor also presumably?) would turn up in a specific situation such as this one. Those drivers held at the crossing probably didn’t realise the company had ‘gone the extra mile’ on this occasion. Thanks for the educational video. 👍

I really enjoyed this one. THIS is where the meat of railroading really is. I am not a fan of a 50 plus miles per hour freight screaming by for ANY amount of time. Your narration makes it super real and puts ME right there!! (and I do NOT have to drive, search, park, put up with the wind, people, or other discomforts) Your comments and screen notes flesh out the story MUCH more than just wheels squealing. And I MUST comment on your editing. This is where it REALLY shines. It takes a LOT of work to take a bunch of clips and make them into a flick this complete and contiguous!! Great videos are MADE in editing. I also enjoy the radio comm in there too. Wish it were better audio from that but ya got what ya got!! Hope you understand I really enjoyed this one. Apparently that's a railroad thing, they do the same thing where I'm from. I get the impression RR's dont give a RIP about highway vehicles. I would be thinking about emergency responders, maybe there is another crossing close by. I know some states have laws about how long a crossing can be blocked, but not sure if they are enforced.

Another great production from Jaw Tooth! Thank you sir! Man, every time you shoot something involving Cohen Industries, it takes me back JT. I grew up in Middletown (60's & 70's) about a block from where it all started. Back then, all they had were the 2 small yards between Grand & Central Avenue's as Cohen Brothers. Then they opened a yard out on Yankee Rd. I enlisted in 1980 and moved away for 36 years before moving back to the area, and WOW have they grown. Good to see a small business grow and become as successful as they have.
