Welcome to Lloyd Tries Cars, this is a channel dedicated to my own experiences of a variety of cars, motorcycles or anything else that moves under its own power!
In this video, we look at the Ineos Grenadier, meant to be a car to replace the old Defender.
So, is it any good? Let’s find out.

Looks like the alignment needs checking as your hands never stopped sawing at the steering on my second Grenadier and neither exhibit that characteristic or the other 4 that I have driven for thousands of years of miles. Don’t forget the engineering input from Magna Styer and the other vehicle they make.

As a car I would maybe give it a 6 out of 10 or maybe a 5.5. As an SUV maybe a 6.5 or a 7 at best. As a robust overlander 4WD it would easily get an 8.5 or maybe a 9. Once again though it doesn't have a steering rack. You can't put rack and pinion steering on a live axle vehicle, unless you remove any type of wheel articulation. For the driving you are talking about an SUV, particularly the new Landrover, will be significantly better. I load mine up with gear for work, drive on motorways, country roads, gravel/dirt roads and forestry trails. It eats up the miles like nothing else. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3JEgONXS4zY.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-srFgveXrRBo.html

Again, totally understand it would be a mighty off-roader! But most cars like this in the UK will be used as predominantly road vehicles. It’s also a tough to arrange a big off-road trip in the UK and terrain isn’t that available to us that won’t get you in trouble with local farmers or police. 😂

@@Lloydtriescars Yes, that is exactly why we have to accept it is not for everyone and often a very poor choice. Doesn't mean those people are wrong. Just that we all like something different. Reason why there are lots of different options for wine, women and song.

It is charming, but it says on the badge on the front “Built On Purpose” - so you should review it against the use case for which it’s built. The steering is not an homage to LR nostalgia - it’s meant not to break and to keep you in one piece when you are doing unnatural things in places you probably shouldn’t be, and the driver of a normal vehicle would never in their right minds even consider. And then yes, despite the fact you are breaking a number of laws of physics, you think to yourself PRECISELY the thing you said it doesn’t deliver - “hmm - this is a nice drive. It’s not supposed to be, but in the Grenadier, it is.” There are two kinds of buyers - those who use it for the purpose for which it’s built, and those who buy it for the nostalgia factor, but are just using it as a “normal vehicle.” The second group say the trade-offs might be too much - the first group think they got exactly what they wanted, with no tradeoffs at all. When owners of the new Defender approach me about mine, and want to see how the seat feels or what the buttons feel like when they push them, and IMMEDIATELY start asking about recentering on turns, I ask them how they are using their Defenders. 9 out of 10 times, what they really want is a certain “look,” but I can tell the Grenadier won’t be right for them. But for the right one, it’s a match made in heaven. Well, in Hambach France, if we’re trying to be geographically accurate.

Yeah all valid points, but I think in reality most of these trucks will never step foot off-road, so I didn’t really think it would be that relevant to take it off-road. It’s already assumed that it will go places most cars won’t, but at £80,000 for a well specced car I think it’s out of reach of the common farmer. So thought I best assess it based on a road car. Again, as you quite rightly say, these things will mostly spend time on the road. I also will point out I didn’t say the steering was an “homage” to Land Rover, but it does handle very similarly to a Defender 😀👍🏻 I take it you are an owner of a Grenadier?

@@LloydtriescarsI am an owner. I was lucky enough to drive some of the test series, pre-production, and just thought it delivered an unreal, almost supernatural off-road experience. I tested it in some pretty challenging terrain, and it was just so unflappable - really tough climbs, rocks, wading - took it all in stride with zero drama (and in those cases, the steering was BRILLIANT). It continues to meet and exceed my expectations, and that with a certain, shall we say “Rubenesque” grace (she is big boned). So I don’t really think you reviewed it on the criteria for which it’s built - on the other hand, you probably provided a public service by providing fair warning to bankers and suburban moms who are just looking to be the first on the block to have one. Right on, I ordered one because its the single toughest production trail machine you can buy. It has the durability for long, hard wheeling with out breaking, and for our out door life style and living off-grid its perfect. But its true, if you are buying this just to be cool and drive on the street, it may not please you the way a light duty vehicle like Four Runner, Land Cruiser, New Defender, Bronco ect. But if you have spent the hours I have replacing IFS parts on the trail, you may want one!

Even that partly panelled version is not classed as a commercial vehicle by HMRC and therefore its VAT is not reclaimable. So forget about it being a serious business truck, it’s just not viable when a Ford Ranger/VW Amarok will do the same work exactly for half the net price or less. Having said that and ignoring the financial aspect and the lack of foresight by Ineos even for the Quartermaster pickup, which doesn’t qualify either, it is a very capable truck that is very capable of hard work for many years. I wonder though whether people will want or be able to afford running these thirsty petrol and diesel versions in even ten year’s time considering the move away from fossil fuels. At the price of these things I cannot see one single reason why they would buy a Grenadier in preference to a much better sorted, comfortable and equally capable LR Defender which will thrash Grenadier on the road, where even a large farmer’s or utility company’s vehicle will spend the majority of its time.
@Lloydtriescars
@Lloydtriescars Месяц назад
This is an excellent comment. Very well said, I didn’t know it wasn’t VAT qualifying. You have to ask yourself, would you rather a brand new Ineos of a 2 year old Defender? I think I know what I’d prefer.
@hedydd2
@hedydd2 Месяц назад
@@Lloydtriescars Ineos have only just announced and made available to order their first VAT and tax efficient blind van two seater version of Grenadier. The ones sold up ‘till now certainly have NOT qualified. The advertise the model you featured and the original two seater as “certified commercial” but that only applied to the DVLA, not HMRC, which limits their speed limits on most roads to 10mph less than ‘normal’ and applies a standard £335 road tax. So that claim of theirs is highly deceptive to say the least.

You are clearly sitting way too low. Wind the seat up as high as possible so you can rest your elbow down on the windowsill. I am also 5'10" tall and the footrest is not a problem. I now have 17,000 kms of driving across all manner of roads. The steering takes about a week to get used to and you will find if you feed the power in smoothly it will self centre. You mentioned Harry Metcalfe review and I enjoy his reviews, of performance cars, but he was against the Grenadier the moment he got in (or just before) didn't help that he was a paid ambassador and consultant to JLR at the time. This vehicle is a solid live axle vehicle with recirculating ball steering. ie: a truck. This is my Grenadier with zero need to wind the steering wheel from side to side like a fool. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Fw2CnkkcCb4.html

Good to hear from someone in the UK. I really didn’t know if your powdered wigs would give you enough headroom, or maybe the lace cuffs would get caught in the center diff lock control arm. Do the silk pantaloons slide on the leather upholstery? How is the foot-well “hump” when you’re wearing heels? All kidding aside, a lot of the UK reviews seem to be very much looking for a SUV experience (evo and Harry’s being 2 good examples) - and when Ineos does pressers, it seems that the Highlands are kind of more the natural habitat for the Grenadier. There might simply not be a lot of Dave’s in the UK. I don’t know - when I go, it’s just for business in London, so I don’t know how much opportunity you guys have to stretch the Grenadier’s legs, even though it is basically an advertisement on wheels for all things British.

I think you have to remember that in the UK (a fairly small island if you’ve heard of it), there’s a lot of people and not much need for wild off-roading. So most of these things will never step foot off-road. I’d like to do a review of one off-road for sure but when you’re reviewing someone else’s car it’s hard to convince them to let you batter it up and down mountains. So have to settle for road reviews which I’m sure you can understand. 😀👍🏻

@@LloydtriescarsI miiiiiiiiiight have heard of it - aren’t those the guys Mel Gibson beat in the American War for Independence? I get your point (insert giant screaming bald eagle with Burt Reynolds in a cowboy hat on its back, once again establishing the supremacy of USA, USA, USA) - but you have to admit that then you’re not reviewing the Grenadier qua Grenadier - you’re reviewing it as something it’s not intended to be or do. I bought it, and Bryan, and Dave because we are man-children who bought the closest street legal equivalent to a tank, with glorious buttons, virtually limitless off-road capabilities, and all of that packaged in something remarkably comfortable and dependable. So it’s fair to warn the bankers and soccer moms, just so they are aware of the trade-offs - but let’s not pretend that those things are defects or design flaws, or that Ineos should even give a crap. Or maybe your review criteria is just a painful reminder to buyers in the UK that really a moped is sufficient for their off-roading needs. If you don’t mind, there are 3 giant bald eagles waiting for me, Bryan and Dave for a party in the remote wilderness to go honor the memory of Burt Reynolds. At least until our wives say we have to come back inside. Dave - I’m making you an honorary ‘Merican - Australia counts.

So funny. Whipping the wheel back and forth does nothing… except the camera is showing the vehicle rocking back and forth. When the reviewer is looking down at the console, his hands on the wheel suddenly stay steady… why hasn’t it wandered off the road. Sorry, but I’m not really sure if we are talking about the quality of the steering or the steerer.
@Lloydtriescars
@Lloydtriescars Месяц назад
Perhaps the camera didn’t give the best impression, but I was turning the wheel a good 20 degrees from the top dead centre quickly and it didn’t venture out of the lane I was in. This could be an issue for any quick avoidance needed. Thought I’d demonstrate it that’s all! 😀👍🏻

Handsdown the worst review I’ve seen so far. This guy has absolutely no idea what an Overland four-wheel-drive vehicle is supposed to be. He has, obviously done very little research on the car before doing this video and as a result makes so many inaccurate statements and technical references. Go and watch Ronnie Dahl’s videos from Australia if you want a good review.
