I have a 2021 Toyota Hilux with AdBlue which is not really to much of a pain filling every 10,000km but what is very annoying is that if it decides to go through a filter cleaning exercise it increases the engine idle speed so when you stop you have a high revving engine, not good and even worse is on a cold morning -10. When you start in the morning after it started its cleansing frensy it will carry on the next day. Don't think revving a Diesel engine at start with a -10 is any good for it. Be interesting to see if Ineos has this implemented.

Thanks for that comment. Really interesting to hear from someone with actual AdBlue experience. Fortunately we don't have -10 over here (except perhaps on rare occasions on our few snow fields). Let's hope that problem is sorted with the Grenadier.Cheers John

OK guys... Here's some more facts about the Ad-Blue, coming from first hand usage here in Europe/Sweden. Price is not an issue - it's cheap. Reason they have this on all diesel engines in Europe (most of them) is because of emissions (as mentioned in video). What are the problems? They are many... If a car is standing still for a longer period of time, it starts to clog up/oxidize. Then you will have massive repair costs. If you spill Ad-Blue it is very corrosive. Make sure to clean it up. If you are in colder climate, like -20 C or colder, if will be problems as the Ad-Blue system stop working on many vehicles (like MB or BMW etc). Common issue here in north Sweden. ...and from my own experience last summer, in my Land Cruiser Prado 150 2.8, I had an issue on a long vacation trip with family and kids. 2:nd day in Germany my Prado turned on the warning lights for Anti Skid and Engine light. Stopped at nearest gas station. Car was running fine, but some minor systems were turned off, like cruise control and some others. Day after I went to Toyota Center in Germany. They found out the pump for the Ad-Blue system was not working properly. I could still drive and continue my trip, and repair when home. But it didn''t feel good going up in the Alps on small roads with no option for rescue - with family - when having all warning lights and some part broken system. Not great! When home I turned the car in to Toyota after a few weeks. The repair/exchange of the Ad-Blue pump was 5.000 USD !!! Pump only, from Japan, is almost 4.000 USD. My insurance covered 75% of this here as car was just below 100.000km In my case, with the Prado, I also have an issue with the placement of the Ad-Blue electronic unit/computer? sitting under the car, bolted to the side of the frame. Just under where you step inside, on the outside of the ladder frame. This box is the connected to a 30+ pin connector/cable that is stiff and impossible to move anywhere. In that position it is likely to get damaged when driving on rough trails or muddy pits. A failiure coming... :-/ This is ALMOST annoying me to the point I am considering getting an old car, without Ad-Blue. It is sad to see cars that are reliable from start, getting these "add-ons" that will only cause coming problems.

The issue with AdBlue is not the environmental issues, but the fact that if that system fails you get your engine blocked. We have AdBlue on our vans witch drive a lot. The AdBlue system fails regularly. The system then gives you 1-2000 km to go to a service station. After that you can not start the engine. Imagine you engine not starting for a faulty gauge... out in the outback. We hate that system becase it constatnly fails and then we must send the van into a service station for repairs. And of course, the van can not be used untill we got a termin in the service station. And those are not some old cars... they have 2-3 years in average.

@@cannyoutdoors hopefully bmw got this figured out but on trucks it's a mess on tractor it's a mess you get break down 90% of the time def/adblue related i've had a telehandler dead sitting because the adblue gauge was faulty from factory the exhaust quality is measured it is conform because the tank was full everyting work, but german enginer decided if gauge is zero machine kaput. I had the transmission locked a Saturday morning in the middle of the shed i had to clean in a rush to free the cow from the closets they are in the meantime. Spend my day calling the rep i'm acquainted trying to troubleshoot ultimately he called a meck in who couldn't do with the computer since now everting is locked and you can't cancel the false error, they had to drive a demo unit to me on quite a distance. i also had an issues on my single other def equipped tractor, the urea crystallised on the nozzle of the adblue injector in the catalyser plunging it error codes limp mode and all that story... other brands like deer go straight to sitting dead like the liebherr telehandler. On day i expected delivery of bulk fertiliser had a phone call from the driver 2 hours late, he was crowling to the truck garage in limp mode... the truck was fresh out from maintenance for the same reasons , chatted with the driver happen all the time. lots of companies proposing def cancellation for a hefty sum, they are busy that's a sign...

Not sure, but has the 'owners' of AdBlue ever issued any figures on how much emissions they have reduced over the years? Unfortunately, AdBlue doesn't clean the Fuel and Exhaust system. We use Cataclean for that. Keeps the DPF clean as well as everything else.
@cannyoutdoors
@cannyoutdoors Год назад
I imagine not, but I am resigned to the fact that those of supposed "greater intellect than I" will simply mandate what I am required to do. Seems to be the trend today, but hey hopefully it helps reduce those unpleasant exhaust emissions. Thank you for your comment, John

John - great vids and was stoked to find a one stop shop for my next purchases. By coincidence i have purchased an ineos and am about to pull trigger on AOR sierra. I was wondering if you had time you could assist me with some recommendations on 2 things; 1. Ineos Petrol vs Diesel. I picked Petrol as i am Sydney based with car going to be 50Km per day in peak hour M-F and then odd weekend away and school holiday trip. I will hopefully do on 8 week trip round Aus trip next year and if luck have a AOR on the back. Really been spinning my wheels on best choice. Any advice or thoughts? 2. Second is about trailer and i will put in trailer vid for consistency. Thanks

Hi Nick , Fantastic...we will have to catch up on the road sometime.. Firstly Diesel or Petrol. I have chosen diesel in the end only on the basis that I do some long and remote trips in the outback and will need to carry additional fuel in Jerry cans. The diesel will give me a bit more range out of the tank and I am never comfortable carrying petrol in jerry cans. I really had to find a reason to chose one over the other!!. The petrol version looks good as it is pretty quick for such a large vehicle (although the diesel is not bad either). There are considerations about diesel becoming less popular but I believe that is a long way off. I think in traffic regularly the petrol is probably the right choice. For your outback trip petrol will be fine, I have never found supplies to be difficult to get have done a number of trips own petrol vehicles.To be honest I almost chose the petrol, either will be a fantastic vehicle. The Sierra. Not sure if you have watched the review I did but it is my honest opinion and gives you an idea of what are necessary options. I had theSierra out last week for a short trip and ,yep still love it. If I were to add to the video I would say that it's bloody hard to get up on the roof. Climbing up the front is simply dangerous and there is no real provision to get up there to carry stuff. I'm going to try a telescopic ladder and see how that goes. The other thing I thought while I was pondering in my camp chair was... did I really need to pay all that extra to get upgraded tyres on the trailer...probably not. I went for the standard electrical system and is it more than adequate, if you want coffee machine or the like you would need an inverter and perhaps extra battery. Oh and one last thing, airbags... would make levelling the van much simpler but a lot of$$$. I can't wait to get the Grenadier and I think you and I will have one of the most capable rigs in the country. I am excited for you and really appreciate you contacting me. Let me know when you come up with any more questions I might be able to help with and let me know when your goodies arrive.BTW what colour? John PS get a Stone Stomper.check out my vid on them.

Do you know if the INEOS can be driven without AdBlue? What happens if you run out of it when u are camping in a remote area for example? Can you bypass the requirement for it? Don’t see why the set up will not let you turn the car on…
@cannyoutdoors
@cannyoutdoors Год назад
No it can't be driven without AdBlue. All this stuff is to comply with Euro 6 emission standards. I am told that this is part of that requirement the car will keep going when it runs out but once stopped won't restart without AdBlue. I assume therefore it applies to all modern diesels withe AdBlue. You get a warning at 3000km to go and at any time you can check your level. Also if you carried just a one litre bottle that would probably give you more that a1000ks. Thanks for your comment, John

@@cannyoutdoors the government actually had contingency plans during the adblue shortage to allow fleets to turn off the SCR system in the vehicles ECU. Most vehicles with adblue can run without it, it’s just a matter of legality.

Sorry John, obviously you made a rather large assumption. Most of my off road & mates have been using AdBlue for at least the past 7 years! It's common outback, in rural & trucking (some of us don't drive 4B's from Asia). 45 years ago my first diesel and 4x4 Club, we didn't have it then either. Just to inform, don't get any on your paint or an open cut or go anywhere without a bottle. What you didn't mention there are a few types of bottles ( filler types) too, not one size fits all. Bowser is cheaper yet does not work on all fills.
