Good idea about the small “bug out bag”. I never did that but I wish I had. Just an added thought. What sprang to mind for me… the one occasion we were forced to abandon our vehicle was when we hit a mine. We got our vehicle seriously stuck and in need of recovery many times but it was still there just buried in mud. Lol. However with that mine strike it blew off an entire wheel hub, flattened a brake drum, punctured a differential, broke a drive shaft, and flattened six of our eight tires if I remember correctly. Amazingly the vehicle could still move though because it was driven on the “run flats” of the remaining available tires onto the low boy to repair back at the FOB. The one other thing that was destroyed was my rucksack (a LARGE ALICE) with everything I owned inside. It was shackled on the left front headlight cluster which was right over the left front tire which hit the mine. Everything I had was gone. Blowing in the desert like tumble weed Swiss cheese. Our plan if our vehicle ever was disabled was to just unshackle the rucks and move out. However. When “YOUR VEHICLE BECOMES DISABLED” that phrase should have started ringing alarm bells. How do vehicles get disabled? By mines, small or large caliber small arms fire, ATGM strikes, Improvised IED’s, fire bombs, artillery shrapnel, etc. that’s all going to occur on the outside… ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ARMOR HOPEFULLY! where all the rucks are… Your idea would have been great for me personally to still have some capability for that period of time (it was around 48 hours before we got back to our FOB) . My recommendation for anyone, say in Ukraine, seriously studying, and not just for the history… they should consider that a separate bag, if your primary is on the exterior of the vehicle, might be a very good idea indeed. To grab and go in case of a fire on the interior that doesn’t allow you to unshackle (or whatever you are doing) your ruck or it is completely destroyed by incoming fire or just more as a realization that the main ruck better not have certain items it it because when the 💩 goes South… it’s 100% gone… and whatever nightmare has made it go away has probably flipped the vehicle over on top of what remains anyway. As an LAV crewman my set up looks almost identical to this (based and Shaw pilled). The only main difference is I run a Qore Performance ICE plate inside of my PC, instead of a camelback on the chest rig. Yea it’s only 1.5 liters, but it allows me to have water on my person while inside of the LAV turret, without being uncomfortable. I bearly notice it. Additionally, I don’t have to worry about it popping like a normal soft bladder. So when I throw on my assault pack it’s not something I have to worry about. As for increasing the amount of water I carry, I just put two canteens on the outside of my day pack, to allow space for my pancho liner, gortex, and MREs inside the bag.
That’s 100% true. You can 100% tell an LAV-25 that’s actually in combat vs training in photos or videos. The AAV/LVTP-7’s or Hummers are no exception. You pile on MRE BOXES, WATER JERRY CANS, ANTIFREEZE, OIL (of different weights), white gas for cooking, camo netting, rucksacks, combat load of ammunition, serialized gear, pioneer tools, vehicle tools, the list is endless and it all is constantly filthy covered in moon dust and oil and blood and water MRE CHEESE and spilled piss jugs JP-8 (diesel) and vomit AND SWEAT. The vehicles interiors are the most frightening nightmarish hell holes imaginable for clean freaks. Farting and monkey ass and toe jam and cordite and CLP… you constantly are moving and someone is constantly throwing dirt on you (and occasionally bullets). You live in the vehicle and when it finally is time to sleep you lay down in the dirt next to the tires or tracks and wake up and repeat. Mechanized infantry… which is how most all infantry fight nowadays (even the straight leggers) is a brutal hot loud violent dirty affair. It’s hard to describe but the infantryman’s job is misery not glory. The infantryman’s glory comes when he puts on his dress blues and awards after a deployment knowing that he was able to endure. There is no finer life that that of an infantryman. No other way to get the experience that so many others can only read about and try to understand. 👍🏻
Camelback must have changed something along the way, cause i have one that is 15+years old that has never given me problems. I have fallen on it, i have slid down skree on a mountain side on it, ridden in a jeep with it on my back. It is the old style where the bladder is inside of a fabric shell kind of thing where the fill port is exposed. A little bit of insulation, but mostly just protects it from abrasion inside the carrier.
Refreshing to see this. Mounted formations are the norm at this point. Even ostensibly light infantry ends up mounted because modern doctrine requires we advance at a speed far greater than anyone can manage on foot. You might live out of your rucksack but you never wear it except for PT. Glorified duffel bag.
Rotating your beltkit 180° and having it rest on your lap is a good way to comfortably carry beltkit in a vehicle, simply flip it back around when dismounting
Not always. An USMC LAR BN is an Infantry BN. We just happen to fight out of a unique vehicle. Like Straight legs were in LVTP-7(Amtrak’s or YATYAS). Or many CAT Teams fought out of Hummers. There were numerous times for various reasons that we left our vehicles behind and went in as straight leg infantry. We did everything from team to Company(Reinforced) dismounted operations. Also once we hit an objective… we can’t clear building or capture terrorists without getting out of the vehicles. Each variant of the LAV has it’s own unique crew and MOS combination. Most are familiar with the LAV-25 which on paper has 3-9 (typically 6 or 7) Marines inside of it. Only three are needed to crew the vehicle itself. VEHICLE COMMANDER (VC), GUNNER, DRIVER. These Marines are School Trained infantryman but they are LAV CREWMAN 0313 which in the infantry community is sort of “looked down upon” because as you said. They fight the vehicle. They are quasi infantry/Tankers (a completely other MOS branch). However the “Scouts” (just a term LAV BN’s use to refer to their integrated Infantryman. Are all School trained infantryman. O311 Rifleman, 0351 Assaultman, 0352 TOW GUNNERS (When our LAV-AT’s were left behind), 0331 (Machine Gunners even though LAR BN’s don’t have many of this MOS oddly and 0341 which are typically on the LAV-M or mortar variant. I don’t mean to “toot” LAR’s horn. But it’s a very bada** place to be an infantryman in combat. Often you function as a fireteam or a squad (when all the platoons four vehicles dismount their scouts at once at the Chief Scout takes over the ground element) but you have instant radio communication to four MONSTER vehicles that have 25 mm chain guns. They cover you as you maneuver and fire or vice versa. Or as stated the scouts are often just “along for the ride” popped up out the back vehicle hatches but just like a gunner on a hummer they fight out of those hatches while on the move. Mostly to cover the vehicles rear. Hope I gave some people some interesting info. I was a Sgt E-5 0352 retrained as an 0351 (at one time a Vehicle Commander) but I served more as a chief scout or scout depending on deployment. I did time on LAV-AT’s as a loader, driver, gunner. On LAV-25’s I served as a Vehicle Commander a scout and a Chief Scout.
AAV has plenty of room. Lol. I work for a defense contractor and we refurbish the old AAVs even stripped down to just a hull they are cramped inside. Always something to trip over or twist an ankle. I cant imagine when its full of gear and a few people in it. I now work on the m109 line and they are tiny. My 6'2" 220 pound butt can barely fit with my welding gear on. I dont know how you guys move around in it in a hurry.
Have you ever thought about swapping the Tacos on the inside of the cummerbunds to BlueForceGear 10 speed compression mag pouches? They compress flat when not in use, serve a variety of roles, and last very long! If you don't want to pay the exuberant price for them, Krydex sells an off brand version of them that is Very high quality and has yet to give me or my fellow infantryman any issues! Love the content, keep on keeping on
The new MSV works pretty well for this, I wear the chicken vest under my top and keep outer part behind my seat, if i need to get out I just throw it over and get out.
As your someone that has experience I'm curious what you'd recommend of civilians would pack with a PC / chest rig and assault pack setup. For civilian / prepare citizen I'd think that load out are lighter like less ammo and slightly different gear.
@@camoman132 It's not the end of the world scenario man. 5 mags would be enough along with the fact that your probably going to be by yourself or with family. Every bullet by good chance is going to counted for and legally questioned.

Army just got them and brother it is a relief ti see them issuing gear that makes sense. The modularity makes life so much easier in a Heavy Scout and Infantry Platoon.
