Thank you for a wonderful explanation for this very useful tool. Now how do we get the teachers to keep the grades up to date? 50% of my child's teachers do not enter grades until the last minute. It's not helpful when not up to date.
Agreed! The number of conversations that I have with my child wherein he says, "I already handed that in forever ago. I don't know why I don't have a grade for the assignment" is boggling. It is definitely a useful tool, but only when the information that it provides is accurate!
This is a multifaceted problem! Generally, I would say when students hand work in the day it is due, our teacher are very good about getting that grade entered on a timely basis. When students turn in makeup assignments for absences or late work, that hit rate is much lower and we need to do better. I have found that teacher are very accommodating when they know there is a concern. I would suggest sending the teacher an email saying your child says the work has been turned in and you would like to verify and could they enter the grade as soon as possible. I think you will find teachers appreciate the out reach. I think for those teachers that are behind, if multiple parents gave them a nudge you would see dramatic improvement. I remember my years as a teacher and managing makeup assignments and late work is a huge chore.
I have had kids tell me that too and then when I follow up with the teacher, the work wasn't turned in. Sometimes the student is genuinely mistaken because they either thought they turned it in or they were thinking about another assignment. Sometimes they exaggerate when they say they turned it in forever ago and it was two class periods and sometimes the teacher still has it a couple of weeks later! This is why I think it is critical for parents to follow up with teachers and verify. That follow up email with teachers trying to get clarity is so important. In my experience parents sometimes feel anxious about that because they think it is confrontational. It isn't! Our teacher welcome the out reach.
I don't think there is a one-stop page for credits or transcript. At least not in my district. Other districts might be different. You could calculate it from your report cards however. Each semester class is worth a half-credit. So a year of Algebra would equal one credit.
Not very many personally. Most are brought to be by teachers and coaches. We find some in student searches. Grand total number of ecig offenses this year is 40-50 I would guess.
