Infinity Speaker Technology Explained - Video Features the Classic Infinity Speaker Model Line of the late 80's when Infinity was still run by the two Original Founders Arnie Nudell and Cary Christie!
These Guy's were in it for the Sound Quality!! This Model lineup was the pinnacle of Infinity as a state of the art Speaker Designer / Manufacturer in my opinion ; I own a pair of 9 Kappa. The subsequent changes in Ownership and Direction have made these and earlier Classic Infinity Speaker Models all the more Special and Sought after!

I find it ironic that Arnie's close friend and associate Paul McGowan replaced the servo woofers in his pair of IRS-V's with non-servo woofers. McGowan even boasted about disagreeing with Arnie's approach which is amusing, as Arnie was much smarter than McGowan who has tickets on himself. So much for respecting Arnie's legacy...

I can attest that even in 2024 these speakers can hold their own, I have the Kappa 8's. 9's and IRS Beta's... I am running the 9's and Beta's together with 6 amps, and in the dark the sound is like the speakers aren't really there. Yet in the light of day they look elegant, and with the drivers restored and on display, who could say that the eighties had nothing good to pass on...

THanks for that link, I have of course watched it before and enjoyed watching it again. It truly is 70's full on hype, but hey I think it matches the Infinity persona. I believe I own the only set of IRS Beat's in the country I live in. Running the Kappa 9's and IRS's together makes for quite a special sound stage, but the cost was a challenge, I think the whole setup was about $35,000+ NZD but I listen to them every day hooked up to my laptop mostly while on utube, to my mind better than money in the bank. I do have spare emits if you ever come to need one... all my surrounds have been replaced with upgraded non degrading ones... Was thinking of recapping them, but wonder if that would change their sound? Thought on that? Oh dear this has become a novel, but I am passionate about these speakers and what Arnie did...take care.

Had a pair of Qe speakers in the late 1970's and gave them to my girl along with a Pioneer SX-550 receiver as an Xmas present. Always liked the sound of the Qe's though they were fussy about amp's to power them. Great sound, cheap! Wish I kept them.

I have been assembling a multichannel system using IRS Beta, Kappa 9.1 and Kappa 8 speakers. Sounds pretty amazing. Although 5.1 material is hard to come by, today’s multichannel amps do a pretty good job parsing 2 channels into 9.1, and if the speakers are legacy Infinity, there’s no compromise on sound quality. Sample video on my you tube.

Well i certainly went down hill, but would not go as far as say to shit... At least not right away... The Kappa II series where made after he left, and the "IRS" Omega´s where also. Not in any way as great as the other IRS or even the original Kappas (though i have not heard any of the old ones), but i have owned Kappa 7.1, Kappa 8.2, and currently own the Omegas, while my friend has my old Kappa 8.2 and a set Kappa of 9.2 also, and they are all good speakers. The Artist is famed Jazz Guitarist - Lee Ritenour, and the track is called "The Sauce". His 1986 Album is called "Earth Run" off the GRP digital record label. Alot of Audiophiles and High End Audio Companies (ex. Infinity) were using His New age Jazz Fusion Music as excellent Demo Material at the time. Another Great track to check out by Lee Ritenour is Called "Rio Funk" from the GRP Live In Session. @MrRoberacer
@MrRoberacer 6 лет назад
I will grant you that Infinity did not grow in terms of better overall performance based on where it was. The thing is a huge portion of all of the tech advances in all areas of audio over the last 30 years are a direct result of Harman's RND. If you look at what Infinity was physically doing in the 70's + 80's you quickly see that as an operation it's most valued contribution to the world was not the finished product. Few people could even hope to have any of their offerings. In departmentalizing Infinity, one could quickly see that their manufacturing arm was solely in existence to fund the RND department. Harman owns a number of high-end manufacturers who supply the audiophile market. An extremely small market indeed. Everyone looks at manufacturers like JBL and thumbs their nose up at them. In the last 20 years, JBL has unleashed a very disproportionate amount of new technology into the pro audio scene which I would guess is where they are the most successful overall. JBL is known as the major innovator of driver technology now and with that has the largest RND department and with that the largest RND budget of any speaker manufacturer on the planet. Harman being smart amalgamated all of their individual company's techs years ago. Tech is shared between all of them and used where it's benefits shine the most. For instance, as it says in the video Infinity invented class D amps. Crown before Harman knew nothing about class D and after being brought into the fold went on to develop Class I (a derivative of class D) which has revolutionized digital amp tech beyond almost all of the competition. Of course, Crown's focus is not Audiophile related and is more driven toward high power densities because their customer base more typically requires that. In Harman land, if one is searching for an amp with supersonic integrity one should look at offerings from Companies like Mark Levinson. Infinity did not stop contributing there either and has a few things that they have done of interest recently. Woven glass fibre cones are very interesting and unique. The current Kappa series drivers very much benefited from the stiffer lighter cone design and the motor structure developed by JBL. Harman didn't need another super elite manufacturer but Infinity had a very publicly renowned name where others like Mark Levinson do not. It makes sense that Infinity would be placed in a position to make an upper-mid level product aimed at the general public and make them more globally affordable. Of course, that would (and did) spell the end of them developing super elite speakers for the 4 or 5 people who could buy them every year. Is that not what PS audio is hoping to do?
@MrRoberacer
@MrRoberacer 6 лет назад
i should be more clear about one thing. Infinity were the guys to introduce the idea of stiffer cone design with the development of Polypropylene. It revolutionized speaker design. Being that was a tall order. Now we have carbon fibre, Aramid fibre, woven glass fibre, natural fibre hybrids and so on. You will note that none of those is actually paper though. Yup, we still use wood pulps but the cone is so far from being "paper" that we can't even call it that anymore. It is just not. The notion of the stiffer, lighter cone though belongs to the Infinity guys though. Yup, all their fault. Lol.
@dedskin1
@dedskin1 5 лет назад
@@MrRoberacer I dont think its such a revolution , this video makes it all look best of the best , ideal . But we shoud know that aint the case , my personal preference is smaller speakers , more simpler the better , i dont even have the desire for Infinity IRS , 50 000$ set , makes you blindly belive them , but that speaker has same problems other have , you need 16meter box for low bass to avoid distortion , LC Tuning aint gonna help there , just one example that they avoid to talk about since it owuld ruin their perfect world presentation . but every other company does the same . cat blame them
@MrRoberacer
@MrRoberacer 5 лет назад
@@dedskin1 You said the problem exactly. "My personal preference". Opinions have nothing to do with science and that is what I see as the problem with the "Hifi" crowd. It is in fact all about mostly arrogant opinions. If we remove opinion and start doing actual measurements we quickly see that paper just doesn't cut the mustard. That isn't to say that if you like your paints smeared that you shouldn't have them but don't stand there and try to sell the world on the notion that your smeared, blurry and largely vague image is scientifically better (implied more accurate or real) than a photograph. We talk regularly about "snake oil salesmen and they only thrive because science is ignored. As a rule studio monitors are far more accurate and revealing of truth. What I think most people don't like about them is they do nothing to disguise the imperfections that are already there. It isn't the speakers fault if it is too good.

In 2017 Harman International sold to Samsung and now it’s like the company never existed 😢😢😢 of course Harman International did start making the brand cheaper and garbage after Arnie was gone.
