The IRS Beta was a smaller version of the mighty IRSV from Infinity. What are the differences between the two? And, Paul gives us a lesson on face mask protection.

Paul do you know how many times you touch your mask and face. What if your mask is infected or your hand. I have seen too many people messing with their mask, adjusting, pulling it up and down. So you think that is safe? This is similar to snake oil in audio.

@@sinosin429 Those masks offer minimal protection. Handling your mask does little to increase your chances of infection. If you're a pesistent nose picker and finger licker, that is where wearing kasks become beneficial. Distancing or isolating has much greater success at prevention of infection. Don't believe all the nonsense you hear from the media or even your own GP. They have zero knowledge about infectious diseases or viruses or nutrition never mind this specific virus.

As a hospital worker, I have to wear a mask all day long. Just the blue one, as you have. They're not too bad. The N95's are no where near as comfortable, but provide better protection. In Ontario, there were 76 new cases yesterday. Not bad for a population of 14.7 million people. We've really done a good job "flattening the curve" as they say. However, there is concern that a second wave will hit when flu season starts up. Especially when the kids go back to school in September. Please take this seriously, people, this is no joke. Thanks for your videos, Paul. Always informative.

@@leekumiega9268 New Scientist had an article (December 3,1988) about the detrimental health effects of CO2 levels being too low. “The low level of carbon dioxide triggers a wide range of physiological changes, many of which are not fully understood. It affects the activity of many cells within the body, especially those in the nervous system. Even a slight fall in overall levels of carbon dioxide will stimulate nerve cells, which then prime the body for action. Muscle tension is increased, sensitivity and perception heightened, the pain threshold lowered and adrenalin released into the blood - the Fight or flight’ mechanism is in action. “But as carbon dioxide levels fall even further, cells begin to produce lactic acid to reduce alkalinity, and metabolism begins to suffer. Fatigue, exhaustion and coma may result. The initial stimulation of nerve cells brought about by hyperventilation can cause tingling sensations, numbness, anaesthesia and, in some instances, convulsions.”

@Larry Niles If it's a cloth mask you are right or if you take breaks from wearing it, 5 hours straight with surgical type masks can cause lightheartedness or headache while 5 hours straight with a N-95 mask can most definitely cause problems but taking mask breaks can alleviate any problem. I worked in a hospital 38 years and while some have not notice any problem others have noted what I mentioned and have verified low blood O2 levels with a pulse-oximeter that are in every patient care department these days.

I say that those tremendous efforts which other countries have implemented in order to successfully Manage the COVID19 and thereby have avoided the terrible destruction, needless loss of life and economic ruin that Our USA has suffered under Trump and his cadre of avaricious swamp monsters, is in fact relatively "Eeeeasy", by comparison. Sadly, there are still many citizens who continue to pretend that they SEE "the Emperor's (Trump's) New Clothes". I realize that due to my age, many people may not understand this "New Clothes" reference, so I would ask them to look up the Hans Christian Andersen fable about "The Emperor's New Clothes" and how foolish are those who lie to themselves and each other, pretending that they should believe their Handlers' words, instead of their own eyes. PatrioticMillionaires .org Also see; the final publication of "The Gartman Letter", and watch Nick Hanauer's (now banned) TED Talk entitled "the pitchforks are coming", which although banned, may still be available on RU-vid. @@modemmark421 As a U. S. government certified Old Dude (retiree on Social Security and Medicare) I understand "The Emperor's New Clothes" fable/metaphor. I am not an economist and make no claims of a deep understanding of the implications of the shutdown, though I do appreciate the seriousness of the situation to the detriment of the economy (I am a master of understatement). Nor am I a physician, but my background as a retired environmental geologist gives me some understanding regarding the analyses of the data sets and trends. We may not quite reach the horrific death toll of the 1918-20 Spanish flu pandemic ( I hope), but we are heading in that direction. The novel SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has shown an alarming ability to come roaring back with a vengeance,when our limited available techniques to keep it at bay are relaxed. Even those countries that managed to achieve some degree of success in reducing COVID-19 have fostered a false sense of security. Only an effective vaccine (or vaccines, multiple medications may be needed in the long haul) widely distributed has any hope of bringing this scourge under some semblance of control. Despite optimistic predictions by some (with dubious concern for anything beyond their own positions of political power, you know who) it is unlikely that the widespread distribution will happen until well into 2021. Vaccine development has occurred at an unprecedented pace and early testing has been promising, but ultimate effectiveness is not yet proven. And the anti-vaccine luddites may scuttle even this hope. Viruses are oblivious to lines drawn on maps and even the oceans have not limited this scourge in our cosmopolitan world. The lack of a coordinated national program has virtually guarantied failure. An international response is what is really needed. Good economics can make life pleasant. Serious disease can make life miserable at best and end it at worst. Biology holds the trump card (pun intended). p.s. Any connection to Minerva "Modern Min" Bannister (Spike Mulligan) on The Goon Show?

How is it that using more tweeters lowers their operating frequency? Why down to 100Hz, most professionals swear that 500Hz and upward is less taxing on the drivers, and out of the ear's most sensitive area (3-4 KHz)
@firstgeargreg
@firstgeargreg 4 года назад
He told you. Paul said that at 100Hz they had a lot of distortion. So, I'm assuming he minimized the distortion by having the crossover roll off substantially above the distortion level at 100Hz but, Paul just said that they made it work.

there are TWO L-EMIM's on each side of the IRS Beta, one EMIM, one EMIT, and one S-EMIT (super EMIT), + the woofers making the IRS Beta's a 5 way system, vs 3 ways for the IRS V, sadly those drivers are fragile. i had to replace the S-EMIT a few times. too bad there wasn't a IRS VI using the drivers built for the Beta, i guess Arnie left Infinity by that time.

Paul! Where would you positioned the EMIT/EMIT-K ribbon tweeter in terms of sound quality compared today's ribbon and AMT drivers? Also, what is the different between the EMIT drivers using Samarium Cobalt magnets and EMIT-K using Neodymium magnets? Is there a technological and sound quality advantage to one of them or just experimenting and making ribbons for different tastes??? Also EMIT-R is an advantage compared to the original EMIT? A video together with your speaker design engineer discuss through this question in a longer video would be very useful and interesting. Personally I really want to know what you and your engineer think about the EMIT compared now days ribbons and AMT.

For the price class the irs beta is unbeatable hands down. Someone I know has two sets of betas and was in the market for the irs v. He didn’t do it because the beta, full filled his requirements and then some. It’s a wall of sound with extremely good definition in the mid high. The low end, is crazy tight on those speakers. However you got to have the space for them and understand. That these has a plethora of adjustments you can make. It takes time to dial them in . But wonderful speaker, it’s considered the baby irs v . From what I heard and know )I have a kappa 9( It’s your typical nudell, wonderful looking, sounding and still extremely relevant even today

Random thoughts about masks: They do not protect the eyes, so you still need to remember to keep your fingers away from your face, and avoid any places where people without masks are talking, singing, breathing heavily, etc. They are ineffective without a good perimeter seal, and the flat paper type has absolutely no sealing. Every time you exhale, some of the breath escapes around the edges. If you are wearing glasses and notice them fogging, your mask isn't working. Not all exhaled viruses from an infected person are carried by water droplets that mask material can arrest. If you feel a sneeze or cough coming on, please use your hands to hold the mask securely against your face and prevent leakage.

Masks, in the U.K., we have to use three layer ones, home made or purchased and use them on public transport and in any shop or shopping centre/mall. The paper ones aren’t much good outside or if they get wet, including surgical masks. I use one that has a nano coated outer layer that helps to protect me too, as it prevents moisture droplets coming in through the mask which is typically how the virus is carried from fork. It looks like masks for the general public will be improved upon, on Kickstarter there’s one that’s see through so you can see someone facial expressions - complete with coatings that reduce misting up, fine filters and even a virus killing UV light that safely kicks in when you put in down after using. I really hope we don’t need masks for long, however, if we do they should be improved upon. Touching a paper or fabric current mask on the outside, where it’s picked up contamination as we breath in, can be bad for the wearer or anyone that touches it and then passes the contamination on. You need to use any mask correctly, there’s loads of videos on the net that show how to - stuffing them in pockets is not a good idea, they should be kept in an unsealed plastic bag/wrap until used and then put back and sealed before disposing or washing reusable ones.

From the other videos of his IRS speakers they don't look like they can achieve much volume especially as the amp is only 2 watts. As all HiFi people know, volume is the key to good sound. High volume creates neurological interference to prevent the perception of deficiencies in cables, amps, and speakers. They only component weakness that can overcome high volume is poor power conditioning. Power must be conditioned until it is as smooth as glass to prevent subliminal aural aggravation.

In my country wall already knows the story about the masks. But USA are liberal democracy and every individual has the right to make his own decision if it is not regulated by law. So this plea for sanity is welcome. I don't think that USA are in terrible condition regarding pandemic. In the USA there has been already 60m tests. In my country which counts only 5000 cases the serological tests were made and they came to conclusion that 2,4 % of the population was affected with covid 19 and that is 100 000 people. So, it is a matter of testing in great deal. But every life counts and it is not so difficult to wear a mask when circumstances require so.

I agree with Paul, I wear a mask out of courtesy to others, I doubt it makes a huge difference but I do. It's his show, he can and should say anything he wants, but "masks" can have a political connotation these days and can't we just have one place where we don't have to be reminded of it in the middle of a video, just have a special video on the subject of masks, so I can avoid it. I love Paul, think he does a great job, but this whole covid thing is just finger nails on a chalk board to me at this point.

A surgical mask gives the wearer more protection than nothing, but not by much. I have seen experts say at most 15-20% protection. But, the N95 does not do much better unless they are professionally fitted to the wearer’s face, and the wearer does not wear a beard. If you just by N95s off the internet and immediately wear them, you just threw your money down the toilet. My wife is a nurse at a satellite crisis center run by the local hospital, and she had to wait 8-10 weeks before they could get a trained fitter over there before they would issue her an N95, even though they had the masks to issue. They just didn’t want to issue a mask until it could be made to protect!
@leekumiega9268
@leekumiega9268 4 года назад
Yes every healthcare worker that wears one MUST get a FIT TEST where after proper fitting they spray a mist at you and you should not be able to smell it.
@doowopper1951
@doowopper1951 4 года назад
Lee Kumiega I know, my wife failed the first fitting because she did smell. But that wasn’t by the expert fitters. So she didn’t get an N95 for about 8-10 weeks until the expert fitters could make it out and fit her so she couldn’t smell the spray.

I love you Paul, but you are no doctor. With all due respect- I take your audio advice closer to fact than medical advice. Some of us are here to escape the outside world’s influence, and opinion. I don’t miss a video, and frequently binge watch some as repeats. Please stick to your hifi “Science”, which is my reason for bringing you into my home daily(sometimes multiple times). Can I claim you as a dependent? HAhaha. This is my opinion only. I do not try to speak for anyone else.

Sorry Paul, you are wrong about the surgical mask. A surgical face mask does protect the wearer as well as the people around.
@doowopper1951
@doowopper1951 4 года назад
Protection to the wearer is minimal. I have heard quite a few experts comment on that, including Dr. Fauci and Dr. Stuart Weiss, and their estimates range between about 15% to 20% protection. If you have a beard, it’s even less. So, they do not protect you, but they do slightly decrease the risk.
@leekumiega9268
@leekumiega9268 4 года назад
No you are wrong and Paul is CORRECT only the N95 mask protects the wearer all of the other masks only protect other people from you as Paul stated because the size of the virus is much smaller than the pores in regular masks and easily go right through .
@doowopper1951
@doowopper1951 4 года назад
Lee Kumiega the virus is magnitudes smaller than the pores on even the best mask. But that means nothing. What is important is that the virus is spread by the water droplets we expel when we breath out, talk, cough, etc. even the common surgical mask captures almost all of the droplets, and therefore almost all of the virus. There may be a minute amount of tiny droplets that escape around the edges of the mask, but that presents minimal concern. It’s the larger droplets that matter most.

@Fat Rat So You see the fallacy of making everyone wear a mask and that is why social distancing is needed as the mask just prevents the sick persons cough from traveling very far, so if you are right next to them in a protest crowd you could get infected. Also see my post below about a cure.
@googoo-gjoob
@googoo-gjoob 4 года назад
@Fat Rat , Lee isnt entirely incorrect. the pores *are* at their smallest once theyve traveled _away_ from your face. but *LARGER* the instant they depart from you. therefore the wearing of a mask is most effective at protecting the 'other guy'. i slightly disagree with Paul, tho. he said the wearer rcvs NO protection. of course that cannot be true. minimal yes, zero? NO.
