I heard this set of speakers this weekend at the new owner's house. They are a giant step up for the IRS V. The new owners system is very high end and I'm sure that contributed to the sound. I have a set of IRS Vs and have Cory's NEO 45 magnets. I've heard three other unmodified sets that were correctly set up and these blew them away; jaw dropping. I was stunned. Cory's son is still doing the EMIMs I think. I take my hat off to Cory, RIP. This is the best speaker system I have ever heard; with out reservation.

I couldn’t agree with you more. While I can’t speak for Bob. I know that material was ordered to make more panels for both Corydon’s own Planar design and for future IRS EMIM’s for the various Infinity designs that were built before and after the V’s.

I’ve been watching your OB Videos every upload. I finally got REW working but it’s not an easy software to use. I also use an open source software called Visual Analyzer which much easier to use (for me anyways). REW is user friendly but I’m having a hard time getting accurate measurements like you do out of it. Thanks for the nice comments.

I bet those do sound good! They should have very good directivity control and the resistive load doesn't have any phase issues so the room doesn't matter as much as with conventional speakers. I'm a big fan of line arrays and I've fairly recently become a fan of planars. My big line arrays in my theater use Air Motion Transformers but my side arrays use planars. I'm also with you on the idea of using his planars in a open baffle design, I've actually been wishing for something like that. Btw, I'm also an open baffle fan, I've been building open baffle systems since 1994. All the big CBT line arrays I built for my theater are open baffle.

The room acoustics sounds good to me based on your voices. Very interesting to see the new changes. I've been listening to my modded waveguided loaded ribbons for a while now and the detail level is better than many equally priced dome tweeters. The sound is a lot like planar magnetic headphones in the treble. To me it seems like low mass drivers done right is the way to go.

the impedance and induction mentioned.. sound like its something due to his design. except that all planars essentially have those features. even the old membrane...the bigger foil makes resonance drop. but it is not actively driven. making the aluminium foil thicker at the end does not make it more efficient there. actually the opposite, since the thicker aluminum with lower resistance is in series with the thinner aluminium, it cant and wont allow more power in that area then the thinner foil passes on (if you want to do such a thing it has to be 2 coils in paralel). it actually is dead weight. look at ribbons with multiple traces. they got wider traces near the magnets one reason is holding shape. secondly is creating a weaker field near the magnets to compensate for the uneven field. where are the promised measurements ? would be interesting to see. Kind regards Joppe
@BuzzardSalve
@BuzzardSalve 2 года назад
Surely it can't be a flat impedance across the frequency range ? It must have a resonant frequency somewhere and a finite Q factor ? It sounds like you are measuring the impedance with the diaphragm not mounted within the magnets so there is no motional impedance.

email Corydon on pricing. If you have the ability, remove the EMIM's and their housings and send them to him to gut and replace the diagrams inside each of the EMIM. housing. He'sll ship back the new Full Range Drivers to put back into where the EMIM's used to be. You will also need to at minimum disconnect all the EMIT's since they will no longer be required. email him at cmj480@gmail.com for better details and pricing.

EMIT tweeters may be disconnected but they are out there by the thousands and new diaphragms are available as good if not better then the originals (the seller is on eBay no less). So now I know who did Paul's. The issue I have is it seems like everyone who has the V's has made changes to them. Different woofers, different internals. Are they really improvements or are they slapping a modern LS motor in a 1968 car. Sure it may preform better but does it take away from the original experience? I guess we will never know being the chance of having an original set and modified set side by side will never happen especially being most of the V's have been modified by now. Don't get me wrong, I love improvements but sometimes what some call flaws can have a beauty of its own.
@joppepeelen

people often have the urge or this weird idea they always can make it better by some tweaks etc. sometimes yes. often... i dont know maybe bias/placebo people that do upgrades on these kind of things have a tendency to not measure a thing, and just think they have a better hearing and understanding of the speaker then there maker. (sometimes that is the case of course)

I had an issue with one amp got tire of it so Paul said to drop these woofers and use regular amps what I did called genesis order the new servo woofers and purchase tha scat amps so now I have the new servo woofers and servo amps but ur right I will get them measured to see if there was an improvement on what I did. And got two pass labs crossovers one for the tweeters and one for the mids do away with the components of the crossovers. To me they sound better and I can adjust but them to I would like to measure them to see if it was worth the money. Before I sell the irsv mono amps.

Slow and steady wins the race. Let's get Corydon & Bob through Axpona and then go from there. Sucks that Ron is in Texas now but he's gotta do what's best for his family. I get that. I would have had him over to Corydon's in a heartbeat to listen to these Wonders. OEM is the way to go IMHO. Let's see. Understand that the excitement I have for these Planars is not the same as I had for Orchard Audio last year and the catastrophic experience I had afterwards. That product has been improved now and I'll be getting an Amplifier to review soon and pass around to the Club. These Planars won't go "Up In Smoke" !

what is the frequency response of the driver? Do you still need the emits?
@joeygsaudiochannel3972

No, the Emits are only there for show. Corydon’s Planar Mag goes from 100Hz (? - maybe a bit higher) to above 20kHz. It’s a direct replacement for the old EMIM’s. The new owner of those IRS V’s has a very special pair of Speakers. He is happy with what Corydon did with them.

Get rid of the emims, Arnie nudell never liked to use them in a line array. It was readily available, all his genesis speakers pretty much have tall planar drivers for that reason. It's far superior especially for a speaker of that pedigree. Never liked the emims, I have the older irs cousin, the RS1b . It quickly got bumped to my dusty speaker closet when I bought my Tympani I magnepan .. Then you mention no comments about the reflections in his room. It's actually a very WELCOME ACOUSTIC trade with planar, dipole, line source. They don't suffer from floor, ceiling, side to side reflections like normally point source speakers do. It's the same with magnepans, you can really sit nearfield and have no reflection or excessive spl issues. Then Corey explaining resistive load, that's indeed so because unlike cones, they do not rely on a wound voice coil on a former. Again, what you see with maggies, it's a pure resistive load. That's why I tell people all the time, they don't need 5kw nuclear reactors to run right. Very linear on impedance.. Oh and of anyone is looking for a 400lbs 4 tower rs1b ? Hit me up, I was planning on rebuilding mine. But after buying my Tympani I, I won't even bother investing in them.
@tinkeringjay6938
@tinkeringjay6938 3 года назад
The RS1a or b is not the best Emim model to determine the enjoyment of Emims. They used 6 as a group for upperbass/low midrange and just one for the mids. They sound dark as stock. They can be modified to sound incredible.
@MichelLinschoten
@MichelLinschoten 3 года назад
@@tinkeringjay6938 emims always have been inferior drivers regardless how you turn it. It's the reason why nudell totally hated using them, no genesis used them ever. All line source planar drivers (far superior to the emims) also required lot less crossover work (which does affect sound we both know that) Don't get me wrong , I need to put this in context. Emims do outperform to me most dome (polydomes what not) with ease. However they lack dynamic range, it's where the woofers need to pick up that task. Nudell already figured out that woofers with planar is the way to go. I have every version of emims ...the old emims and the h-emims.. Nothing comes even close to a true line source planar drivers or driven speakers. I am very familiar with the 201 genesis, those drivers destroy the IRS v emims hands down. Downside ? Cost of repair 2200 per set of drivers . Yup been there 😁 You want to get a speaker at the fraction of the cost of a irs v and really close to that performance? Get a magnepan mg20.7 at around 10k Add a set of servo controlled and/or dipole subs .. it won't shy away from that irs v hands down. And to put my experience at it here I have probably 7 sets of infinties , repaired emims and emits. I love and I do mean love my renaissance 80 with her h-emim. It's more revealing than quasi ribbon (magnepan coined it , their fault not mine) However . musically?! Far nicer than the emims. I wished Arnie nudell would have had the option to actual use a full 6-7 foot planars to just do do mid/highs. And use the servo controlled columns with it. I bet it would pair well with maggies

Hi Thomas, Yes, his Son Bob Johnson is looking after Corydon's works. Most of the materials have arrived and he's currently building another copy of the Prototype his Dad built. We are going to Axpona to Demo it but AudioCon is too soon but we will be there to talk about for those interested. The AZAVClub is also supporting him regarding any equipment and or help he needs to get them done. My one regret (and the timing sucked) was that Corydon never heard his Prototypes with the Orchard Audio Ultra Amplifier while I had it on loan for two months. We'd discussed it, and he was keen on seeing if the pairing worked as well as his beloved Mark Levinson ML-2's. Sadly, he got sick right around the time I had the Amplifier.

I spoke to Bob about demo’ing at AudioCon in L.A. in January and he’s keen to do it. We need to get his Dad’s work in front of the Audio Community to financially justify building more. Plenty of magnets & paralene arrived to make plenty of panels. Also he’s looking into local Phoenix area Dealers to Demo his Dad’s work. These are not just a pair of “Cones in Box” design to “Wow the Crowd”. Dollar amount I can’t devulge (yet). But it won’t be cheap. Please stay tuned Robert.
