If you’re new to Geek Psychology, my name is Matt Sherman. People call me Sherman. I'm a personality type expert, life coach, hypnotist, author, podcaster, and course creator. I help mainly INFPs embrace their unique strengths and navigate life's challenges. Through practical strategies and deep insights, I aim to help people like you live a more fulfilling and authentic live where you can wake up and feel good about who you are and your impact on the world. I love the idea of "lighten up" and how you can see it as a metaphor for a lot of different perspectives. In this video, I go through several different issues that INFPs face and how I deal with them, and at the end I share the frame of how to lighten up.
I'm still playing with this style of video, so constructive criticism is appreciated :)
Hope it helps!

This is so true! As an older INFP myself, I have found that if I take things less seriously or even see the funny side of what initially feels 'tragic', the situation and my outlook immediately improve 🧡✨

Dont be afraid to change things even little by little,you can start by organizing your own room,something i struggled a lot and did not even knew why my whole life,for some reason how organized we are can be seem in something as insignificant as organizing files from A to Z just yo put an example that can rrslly help to be more methodical st some point whichnis what we infp struggle the most. True that (regarding comment above)! There’s no one right way to start finding or shifting your self-awareness. I have to actively release the pressure on myself to be sny certain way. Your experiences make you the most genuine you (good and bad and everything in between) and that’s what can show you the grand perspective on life you have as a unique individual 🌷

I stopped what I was doing and grabbed my notebook when I heard you say we were healers. I knew that, but I think I had forgotten that about me. The happiest time in my life was when I was writing songs and singing them to my school aged clients. What's really strange is, I was writing songs because of emotional pain from a severed relationship. But it was also when I found my greatest joy. I was being healed from writing and singing songs and at the same time my clients were being healed too. I think finding your channel was not an accident. I'm going to make a change in my life now and get back to what I was called to do. Help others heal from their emotional pain while teaching them life lessons. Thank you kind sir for today!

My son is an ENFP I am an INFP my wife is an ENFJ. My son also has ADHD. Doubly hard for my wife to understand. I was explaining to my son tonight, that as NFPs we tend to feel the feeling of other people so much more than others do. One day my wife got angry with my son and I got angry for her because I felt my son had purposely done something to get his mum angry. she was confused and said why can't you stay calm when I am angry. I said to her because when you get angry I feel your anger. So I explained to my son that when we feel his mother's anger, we need to recognize it is not our anger we are feeling, it is her anger we are feeling, and we don't need to take ownership of that anger, because it isn't our anger. We are experiencing that other person's anger. We need to recognize it and shake it off because it is not our anger. I am only new to all this and I am just realizing I am quite empathic. Now I just have to start to become who I am meant to be. The kind gentle INFP I was meant to be. The dreamer and the lover, the passionate and the compassionate. The Idealist and the value-centered person who wants to help others and to heal the hurting with love and compassion.

Thank you :) even at 30, I have to constantly remind myself to take everyone's criticism with a grain of salt and not overanalyze every situation. I really like the lamp metaphor as a way to think about where to focus our attention as a conscious choice we can make every day. I am still struggling to give my light to others but have gotten a lot better at it over time.

I found out I'm an INFP through a spiritual awakening. One day, after a deep depression, I wanted to find myself. I also wondered why I felt so emotional and hyper sensitive compared to people around me. I felt like a loner due to that. Never understood why I needed to seek validation and would end up getting confused because some things people say or do don't resonate with me. I always knew more than others and people would tell me I'm an old soul. After experiencing the dark night of the soul, I was forced to go inwards instead of outwards because introversion are all about introspection. I now realize I am the light and have to accept both light and darkness in myself. I'm learning to lighten up and bring out my inner child self more.

I like the word melancholy over sadness. Maybe Moody as well. I think this type needs to learn to find words that are much more constructive. I speak for myself as well. The Page of Cups has also been compared to the INFP in tarot, and I think it reminds us that we have so much emotional intelligence and fun to offer others, but we need to remember to pursue fun and inspiration in forward motion, rather than looking backward, like you say regarding the light metaphor.
@MaryJenevieve

Such good points! Everything you mentioned felt very true and are things I’ve learned as well from past experiences. So this video was confirmation for me that I’m actually not completely stuck in my experience and that I do know the answers to my own struggles so thank you! And I think it feels good to be sad for INFP's because it's such a familiar feeling to us haha and weirdly enough, it can be quite comforting (yet bittersweet) as its what we know the most. But as I grow older the more I grow to dislike feeling sad and the harder I work to be a happier person, don't know if that's an INFP thing but its something I noticed within myself! And I think part of working towards happiness, means I need to look closely and improve on my INFP traits that tend to hold me back from my full potential.

Thankyou much as I needed a reminder especially during this time of year. As an INFP who gets overwhelmed and hyperfocus on my feelings, I find it helpful/ healing to tap into my goofier side. The side of me that loves to bounce around with random funny ideas similar to an ENFP I guess. I find that it can be helpful to get myself and others out of emotional ruts but need to stop worrying about being judged for it. Anyway, I feel like this may be accessible to many of us and for that I am grateful. Thankyou!
@heatherwhatever7714

I'm really upset because someone at work rang me up to ask me why I wasn't in the office. Long story short she did not believe my answer and made me feel like I was lying. This happened on Friday, just before the weekend. I cried and felt totally miserable, I still feel that way. It made me want to quit my job and move away. I know it sounds small to other personalities, but it really hurt me.

Was the individual a manager or fellow coworker? If the person was a fellow coworker the person has zero power so you don't have to worry about it. If you requested the day off and got approved don't worry about it either. I had a manager who wasn't my direct manager call me as I logged off my computer early on a Friday a few years back. I already got approval but she called anyway because my office sucks at communication so I was more pissed then upset. You can't let people get to you. If you know you are speaking truth and someone tells you you aren't they can go shove it.

Damn I felt seen hahaha The whole putting up a wall of cold emotionless logic strikes very true to when I was younger (26 right now) and the whole it's bittersweet do dwell on sadness hit me right in the feels. It was a really great video, more ao than others you've made because I really felt that you're using your own darkness to help others and that's something I've been trying to do. To make the depression and suicide attempts that I've been through something that can be good and helpful, for them to at least have some positive meaning. And something I try to live by is "brave are those who crawl out of hell and come back carrying buckets of water " Thank you so much for this, it really resonated

It's the depth of sadness that feels good. Us INFPs love intense feeling, for me it's the transformation that I know will come afterwards. I feel like gratitude is the key to a happy life but it's kinda difficult to feel gratitude when you don't believe you're deserving of anything good. And it sucks because even though people help me and teach me, in the back of my mind I feel I am undeserving and feel guilty for wasting their time. Whether that's an infp thing or depression I'm not sure...

I just feel so happy, because the way you process and share reminds me so much of myself! I don't fit the type perfectly, but hearing you makes me think I truly am an INFP, and I feel so understood by you. I usually don't feel that way. It doesn't feel like a lot of people really get me. It had never occurred to me to join my tarot practice with my personality type! This is brilliant. Also, I loved hearing a fellow INFP recognize that feeling sad can feel good. In my teenage years it became like an addiction to me, to be sad. I had to learn to get out of that state and not dwell too much on those feelings, because I was missing a lot of beautiful nice things too. To continue choosing happiness as a grown up is a challenge, but one I'm glad to say I have mastered.(mostly)

Good advice! The perspective you take on things determines the way you will see things. I had to go through years of feeling worthless, unemployment and drug addictions to learn that the hard way. What helped me the most was learning to see things in a future's perspective. So instead of asking myself "what feel good right now?" (the answer for me usually drugs) asking myself instead "What will benefit me the most in the future ?". Feelings of worthlessness in the present moment was why i got stuck anyway. Also, things CAN get better (and they will) as long as you can create hope for yourself in a future's perspective! You are NOT a lost cause! You will be amazed at what you can do if you allow yourself to change your destructive habits i promise! :-)

I'm not able to not focus on the little things in your video, but these are important. First of all, when you said that we are Priest-like figures, I felt it so much. In the Tarot videos the High Priestess symbolizes me. The second thing is that years ago I had written this line in a poem: "... and in this moment somewhere the Darkness is confessing love to the Light". I didn't understand what it means, it wasn't clear for me. However I've started to understand it. I really enjoyed your metaphorical explanation, thank you! :-)

I couldn't agree more. Yes, that precious inner light. It can shine so very bright. There is so much beauty inside ourselves. We need to explore and nurture that beauty. I feel like I need to deal with my emotions first before anything else. I cannot let my emotion to overwhelm me because in that case I wouldn't accomplish something(such as finishing a project, or even talking with my friend). I need to force myself into a well planned schedule (but maybe not that rigid). The process is definitely really hard. I cried a lot at night because I have suppress my emotions in the day. But I do found out that I can accomplish something. This process do need take a lot of effort and courage. It's just like you are challenging yourself everyday. However, this whole process of making yourself stay conscious and keep up with work is only the first step. You just kind of make yourself more organized in this society. (But sometimes, especially during breaks, I still fall into the "most comfortable moments" which I let my emotions to lead me or completely sink into sad moods which sometimes feels good. It can be kind of a relax from daily pressure, but I cannot keep this mode too long to affect my life. I do feel like I need positive thinking by doing exercise, or doing something I love. It is really tough, but I really need to embrace it, even under some circumstances where people around you does not understand what you are doing and you are kind of alone). You still need to overcome the challenge of being social with other people (how to interact with other people,

I think we INFPs are eternally shy 🙈 Watch how his eyes keep darting away to the sides and then this slightly uneasiness of the eyes. My one Facebook live video felt like hell for a bit but I’m glad I pulled through with it

Lmao. I do resonate with strangely feeling good about being sad. I'm like a masochist. I have a husband now but I do miss my lonely loner days. My job is easy now and pays fairly well and I kind of miss the days I was struggling, depressed and unmotivated except to do well at my low paying job when I was younger. I felt more like my unique torchured artistic self without the constant presence of my husband. It's nice to feel things I'm a lot happier now but not as much sadness ro draw from for artistic musical inspiration. But then again, I might be looking slightly with the lens of nostalgia

I'm not sure what type I am, I tested as INTP twice. I have also done an eneagram I believe it was called which said I was type 5, 6 and 9 mainly 5 though. I don't feel like I'm super smart, logical, and constantly thinking. I feel like my head is full of random scribbles and useless information and I constantly daydream lmao. But a lot of the intp stuff I have listened to sounds like me. I'm confused.

I'm a 27 years old INFP woman, and I find it hard to not absorb the energy of the people around me especially the negative ones, I feel like this has been taking a toll on my mental well-being thus I tried distancing myself from other people as much as I can, but in turns it hinders my chance to have a real genuine connection with someone. How do we get past something like this?

Are there any trekkies here? In the original there is an episode about a mute empath. She could take people's physical injuries onto herself and heal the person. However in doing so she became hurt. She would then like swoon or pass out I can't remember. But in doing so she would heal herself. Did anyone ever relate to her like wish it were possible for them to do that? It would be worth the pain to heal someone else, because then afterwards I would just heal myself. I wonder if I do that emotionally. My family comes to me and they are needing help emotionally, so I listen and create what I think they are feeling inside myself and help them. They go away feeling better but now I have all this pain in me, but I then just sort it out and its gone.

I took on people’s pain in my job as a dental assistant. They went home feeling better but I went home hurting. I didn’t know there were others like me until I found them two years ago on RU-vid. I kept mentioning it to family who stared at me blankly like “you’re nuts.” I left for a quiet artistic career and was so much happier. I know people do navigate it successfully but oh well.

The only part I disagreed with was the "feeling sad can feel good" part. From my experience, it's about knowing the truth. The truth is a hard pill to swallow. As an INFP I think it's more like if the world is a dark and depressing place. Then it's normal and logical to feel sad; like a soul sucked dried of vitality and life. It's a hell of a trap for someone who is both intuitive and feeling...

"thanks but i will do it my way"... why i never said it like that instead of giving up and say nothing like i agree when i don't ?! It's like, you know this feeling, you know the other is right but you will do it anyway, and when you say "i don't really have the choice do it" because you are what you do and this is the way you are, and people around you keep saying you are wrong, etc etc. sometimes, i feel being stubborn is a good thing for us.

I once had a boss who would explain why he wanted something done a certain way, or something put in a certain place, when there was no discernable advantage to that way or place, by saying, "It's the nature of the beast" - which pretty much settled it. So it goes two ways: we want to do it our way, but also need to accept that other people might need things done their way.

I’ve got a long way to go, but thank you :) I’ve made 300+ videos and have worked in jobs where I had to give speeches in English and Japanese. I’ve taken some classes too. It was not easy at first. So... a lot of practice adding some logical structure to help put feelings into metaphors so I can explain them.

Your dream There may be a sin in your life that is taking control. You have tried to kill it but instead of dying it has spawned itself. I have been through that myself. I found that Jesus was the only answer. Only he was able to finally free me. Just a thought. Great video 👍.
