This will work for cameras that are designed to have night vision, but visible light cameras typically include infrared filters because you get a sharper picture when you block the infrared. Just applying retroreflective stick-on material on the license plate frame would probably work better, because most traffic cameras have a light source near their lens. A cop would only be able to see that if he held a flashlight right next to his eye. From any other angle, it would not reflect back to his eyes.

Just a tip when you're making something like this. Use your soldering iron to melt the insulation on the wire then pull it apart with your fingers. You can make one long continuous wire for both your power and ground. Insulate it with epoxy or hot glue where needed. As far as the design I don't think it works as well as you would have hoped. They can change the saturation, brightness, gamma and all other video settings to be able to read your plate. If you had something over the middle then maybe it would work, a clear film that you can pass light through to act as a diffuser is a possible solution. Thin plexiglass would work well enough and not look out of place. Either way it's a cool idea.

You might try edge-lighting like a a 1/4" thick clear acrylic panel over the tag for a more homogenous distribution of UV photons to obscure the plate. That way the LEDs could remain hidden behind the frame as well. Either that or at least two salient LEDs top and bottom to better blind the center area.

Offense? I thought red light cameras (actually the tickets that they generate) were deemed unconstitutional by way of the lack of due process - you are not afforded your day in court or that there is only a picture of the act without contravening circumstances. I’ve gotten red light camera tickets and I’ve never paid them. I wrote to the company (yeah, a company, not a municipality) saying that if this charge appears on my credit report, I will sue them. A passenger can't even use a phone if its deemed by them to be LIKELY to cause distraction. I believe our cameras are operated by a bank and no surprises they are making a killing. They do hold up in court. Also if you raise concerns about privacy and such, you'll get a "if you're not speeding then you have nothing to worry about" from the authorities and annoyingly from the boothlicking public despite the average speeding offence being about 6mph or less over. For 5 volt DC and a good bit of current, across a 5-6+ meter long skinny cable? I don't think so. Probably not even 4 volts coming out at the sign, certainly not under load. Actual ethernet signals are barely a few millivolts. To enable a little bit of power to run across cat5/6, like PoE, you have to boost the voltage up into the low 50s. Otherwise the relatively high current for the skinny long wire causes far too much of a voltage drop across the cable.

Be sure your LEDs are 904nm wavelength. This matches police LIDAR. On the front, use a Raspberry Pi to strobe them at 14Hz when you press a button. This will turn your traffic signal green at Opticom equipped intersections. (That gizmo on the light crossbar that looks like a beer can with 2 fingers sticking out the side) If you also make them strobe at a high PRF rate that is somewhat random, they will prevent or delay police LIDAR from locking on. (Control the LEDs individually so at least one is always lit) That 1/R^2 thing really works...Lidar can't pick out its own reflected return if your bright pulsing causes destructive or constructive interference with their signal.
@smeggyhead1
@smeggyhead1 3 года назад
904nm won't do anything, not against camera flashes, and not against LIDAR. LIDAR laser power is about 30 Watts (for about 10ns). The LIDAR sensor easily discriminates it's own (partial) 30W (retro) pulse reflection, from ambient IR light (of which there is plenty - sunlight); hence wildly divergent, comparatively weak LED light wont do anything. "strobe at a high PRF rate that is somewhat random, they will prevent or delay police LIDAR from locking on" While it is possible to confound a LIDAR gun, the device will inform the operator if a laser defeating device is used (various error messages: E01/2/3/7) . The penalty for being caught trying to defeat any speed camera is much worse than that from speeding, and users of these can be caught even if not speeding. The processing ability needed to confound a speed gun without inducing any error message is well, well beyond what a Pi can do, and the knowledge to do this is well, well beyond what any amateur engineer will understand. Source: I personally own 2 different LTI2020 LIDAR guns and borrowed others. I know exactly how they work from my own probing, tear-downs and experiments (and yes, I have experimented with external 905nm lasers). Also, I kick ass at electronics. Gasto type cameras already cater for it's own super-bright flash from retro-reflective plates, so some divergent, weak LEDs won't make much difference. IR ANPR sensors also typically use their own active bright IR illumination; furthermore, such a defeating device won't anything against the accompanying overview cameras (not IR sensitive).

This is just like a volcano science experiment. Technically you are working with acids and bases but it's only vinegar and baking soda. This is quite the same thing, while this works in theory, 99% of police/parking cameras will have IR filters meaning this will not "blind" them, it will look just like the camera on the "day mode". I'm not sure what can this help with, except maybe, with some kind of night roberry or parking fraud and protecting against CCTVs. But trying to trick lidar/radar cams that do speeding tickets is pretty much impossible.

@@xofcenter5576 the only laws i can find in any regard so far are summed up thusly; your license plate must be visible to an officer at a reasonable distance (think driving behind you trying to see what your plate says), and some states specifically ban tinted or 'trick' plate covers along the lines of plastic types. the feds ban RF jammers, which is the whole cam speed sensor part of the equation, but i see nothing that would cover IR (for those few places such would even work, as most will, as mentioned, have filters due to sunlight exposure and various other factors). so unless its very poorly worded, i can't locate anything that IR LEDs would fall under, and almost no jurisdictions currently have laser jammer laws on the books, since that's what's in them. an array of IR LEDs. and while i'm sure this will change eventually, its currently almost entirely a non-entity in the legal sphere (again, so far as i can find). tldr; block/jam RF = bad mojo. block/jam non-visible light = not seemingly currently covered by law.

@@xofcenter5576 cali vehicle code (div 12, chapter 2) disagrees. everything pertains to visible light that could potentially be applicable. the whole summary is basically; no red lights in front, no white lights in back except the backup lights, no flashing lights except turn signals/hazards unless its the usual flavor of top mounted lights on tow trucks, security, etc.and the usual emergency lights provisions that say only they can have flashing red and blue, etc so as to prevent anyone from equipping lights to make their cars resemble cops/ambulances/etc and possibly impersonate first responders. i can find nothing in the 2021 version of cali's vehicle code that would ban IR leds from being mounted to a license plate frame, and all relevant mentions directly reference visible light, and only visible light. the single thing i could actually not only allows it, but specifically protects it; codes.findlaw.com/ca/vehicle-code/veh-sect-24255.html (non .gov link since i just wanted the relevant section) note that while it says the device is to supplement visibility of roads during darkness, it doesn't limit operation to times of darkness by code... it literally allows the use of IR emitting lights so long as there's no visible glare, it doesn't prevent drivers from being able to see properly, and its linked to the headlight switch full on position. this system is to be tied to a monitor that displays the IR on a screen that doesn't block the drivers view. soooo.. just means you run with your headlights on during the day. and that isn't illegal (yet) in cali, by cali vehicle code, the only timeframes codified in law are 'darkness' and 'inclement weather', or both. so unless you can find me something that contradicts that.. yeahh.. cali's good to go with the right setups.

I think the real alpr systems will not fall for this. First of all the exposure time of camera will not be changed like your security camera. Second the licence plate should not have reflective paint for the text. Plus lots of the systems read the plate at a distance between 15 -30 meter which makes your systems light very in effective (compared with the systems IR). For avoiding alpr system I would use some mud on plate or reflective black paint for text or non reflective background painting. Please keep in mind covering plate with your victims' blood may be the most effective way.
